BMW offers the 4 cyl because it boosts the mpg figures for the entire line of cars. If you need more performance, get the 540 6 cyl, M550 8cyl, or the upcoming M5. Choice is good!
Good review. Problem with this car is nicely loaded, you have a heavy $60,000 car with a 240 hp 4 cylinder. *I* could accept that in a 3 series but not a 5 series. Same holds true for what Lexus offers in their GS. 240hp pushing a 4,000 lb mid size luxury car.One reason why most companies emphasize a sweet exhaust note; to mask a 4 cylinder engine.
Tully3674 Well said. Putting turbo four-cylinders in lieu of an often pricier and less strained six cylinder engines seems to be the biggest cost cutting technique by manufacturers of late. We will be seeing more and more of this.
Exactly. They can also get away with it by playing it off as a "luxury" sedan that "doesn't need" the best performance. It's a con. Plain and simple. The better fuel economy is nice, but they'll really need to get more out of these turbo fours if they plan to keep doing this shit.
Tully, I hear what you're saying, but even Caddy has four cylinders lately. I would just be concerned about how refined it is as 80 mph. If the tach is low and you can't feel the motor rumbling, I think it would be fine. What concerns me more is these nine speed autos of today. I'm concerned the car would be constantly shifting, and when does it actually go into ninth gear?
I like this new 5-series, but I'd opt for the M550i if I could afford a new 5-series. Never understood why they offer a turbo 4 as a base engine; even a naturally-aspirated I6 with direct-injection would make more sense in the 530i.
you must understand that in some countries, the taxes when the engine pass the 2L is way more expensive than it should be with a smaller engine, i own a 530i, if it was a NA I6 instead of turbo 4, i would spend like $15000 just because of taxes, even though it is the same car.
Do dealers put badges on cars they sell in the US? That Apple chrome badge on the tail is hideous. Imagine spending 50-80k on a car and someone sticks an apple on it...
Kia looks better, more hp, more standard features, better warranty and won't stay in the shop... 4 cylinder Bimmers dropping timing chains /tensioners already
Drew you're the man! I was hoping you do the review on one of these 5 series!! Keep it up n stay gold!!

Tully3674 agreed. My 220 hp turbo four works great with my 34000 gti but not with a 60000 bimmer. Needs a six at least.
