great video . have been looking at doing this route myself for a while .. i live in monasterevin so use a lot of the route anyway when i get time to get out ...
Great informative video, thanks. I have either walked or cycled the full route, to St Mullins, where there is a nice cafe. Your video brought back memories, and I am looking forward to the second half. Thank you for your efforts in making the videos.
@Ebiketouringlife I've done it in bits over the years. The last section we walked from Borris to St Mullins in 2018 I think. Grass track lovely. Few months ago camped at river hollow camping on barrow river 20km from St Mullins.
Great video. Ive often thought of trying that route. I’ve only gone as far as salins. One way to avoid that section between Adamstown and hazelhatch you can go through Adamstown and use Tubber lane. Much quieter route than the one you used in the other video
Sorry I dont use Strava - there is a cycle travel link in the video description but also it’s pretty much get on the canal and follow the water, then turn left at Lowtown. Stay on the side that is the walking route if either side is an option
Hello sir, thank you for your informative video. I was searching for something similar and found it very helpful. I plan to travel from Sallins to Dolphins Barn and was wondering if the Grand Canal Way would be safe to use during early mornings and evenings, especially during office hours (6am and 6pm) As I don't have an e-bike, I'll need to pedal the entire journey. Do you think this would be feasible for a 20-year-old? Finally, could you estimate how long it took you to travel from your starting point to Sallins? Thank you for your time and assistance.
Hmmm I think that’s very ambitious. That’s about 30km each way and 3-4km of that on a rough slow surface so tough to do in much under two hours. But also from next month when the clocks change it will be dark around 6 and I think most of the length isn’t lit so at the least you’d want a good head torch. There was a problem with teenagers stealing bikes and attacking riders at the section near Dolphins barn but that was a few years back and I’ve not heard anything recent. That said if you’re a fit 20 year old and determined it’s not impossible and perhaps you don’t have much else in the way of choice financially ? There is a train to Sallins I think, not sure about buses
Thank you very much for this information. You've given me a lot to think about. Thanks again for your time. Your videos are truly one-of-a-kind in Ireland, and not a single person does videos like how you do.

That would seem pretty definitive then! The waterways Ireland podcast has an interesting episode on the little that’s known about the canal construction workers
Bit of a waste of money and effort using that floating digger to clear the vegetation from the canal, surely a few hippos could get the job done at a fraction of the price.
@@Ebiketouringlife If the hippos were able to adapt to their natural environment, why should we expect any less of grown men splashing about dressed in what appears to be babies bibs?
Great video!!
Love this - hoping to do it next summer
The Ciff at Lyons just after the Hazelhatch has a lovely pantry in it and loads of outside seating and the empanadas are amazing 🤤
Next time I’ll have to stop off there

Loving your videos mate
Thanks for the encouragement
Like the video format, the research and commentary gives a context to an otherwise repetetive video of the canal.
Thanks, the Timelapse footage is intended for anyone cycling the route who wants to know what the various surfaces & barriers look like
great video!

Thanks!

How long ago did you first do it - I did a section in 2020 from Bagnelstown to St Mullins but nothing above that

Yes someone else recently alerted me to that - I’m intending to ride it up n the Autumn as part of a canal loop
This is wonderful - Do you happen to have the routes on Strava?

Nice video, when are we going to see the rest of the Spanish adventure?
Probably next Weds - summer sees a huge backlog build up but that gives me more to do in winter
@@Ebiketouringlife fab thanks can't wait.
Mountjoy Gaol was built c.1850 so prisoners could not have been involved in building the canal.

Hmm hippos are very dangerous indeed and can run on land at about 40kmh. The canoeists wouldn’t have a chance
