  • Lark was a very viable offering from Studebaker in the era of Falcons, Corvairs, Valiants and Ramblers. They showed real imagination with this offering, a stationwagon model with a sliding roof in the rear. It allowed for tall loads that otherwise would require a pickup bed!

Nice paint color! Not something you see very often!

Hey, guys! Studebaker seemed to offer fewer choices than let's say, Chevrolet, but they seemed different. www.autocolorlibrary.com/pages/1963-Studebaker.html#parentHorizontalTab2 (ten choices) as opposed to www.autocolorlibrary.com/pages/1963-Chevrolet.html (seventeen choices) Notice Chevy's choices seem a bit more sedate. Thanks! :) Jack

Hey, Dee! Exactly! I think the family would have lots of fun with this wagon...the kids would love that sliding roof, and the car looks great! Thanks! :) Jack

I knew what the unusual feature was before you got to it :) I remember those sliding roofs well. Beautiful car.

Definitely some "out of the box" thinking was involved here! The Lark itself was a credible entry in the "small" car field, largely a shortened version of the '53 to '58 Studebaker. They made the best of what they had! Thanks! :) Jack

Wow! I'm the first to comment! Beautiful looking car. I've seen a few 1963 Studebaker Lark wagons before. I don't recall whether they were Wagonaires. Lovely cars! I've always found the front end of the 1963 *way* more attractive than the 1962. I love how the Wagonaire roof opens up. If only all wagons had that feature. It would make it easier to load taller items into the cargo area. 🙂

Hey, Jason! Yes, the front end of the '63 is much more appealing, largely due to a bigger grille, and I think they were trying for a Mercedes like appearance. That sliding roof panel was an interesting idea, and it could be quite useful at times. Its Achilles heel was the weather sealing...noted for its water leaks. Thanks! :) Jack

@@coolrides I've heard that about the sliding rear portion of the roof. It's too bad Studebaker didn't fix the problem during the initial stages of production before it hit the showrooms. You'd think they'd think about such things. 🙂

I have a feeling that engineering something like that wouldn't be as much a problem...superior sealing techniques, better gaskets, more drainage of water. Today's sunroofs are a testimony of how far we've come in eliminating water leaks. Thanks! :) Jack

Another example from Studebaker of their slogan “Different By Design”. Thanks for showing this beauty!

I think this all happened before the phrase "thinking outside the box" was created, but this vehicle sure should qualify! Thanks! :) Jack

Nice one Jack! There's a '62 Lark two door coupe in my extended family.

Glad to hear! It was a savior for Studebaker at the time, and gave it some breathing room in the now highly competitive smaller car market! Thanks! :) Jack

Credit designer Brooks Stevens for the Wagonaire; GT Hawk, and the never produced Scepter. He did the most for Studebaker with the least amount of money!

It certainly was fortuitous for Studebaker! Short on money, but at least they had talented designers on their side. Thanks for crediting Brooks Stevens, a name seldom heard. :) Jack

Hey, Gary! I bet this may be the best around...the big problem is what do you do with the water that collects on the roofline. Plus the usual rust problems of cars in the rust belt. Thanks! :) Jack
