  • This is my spoiler review essay for The Batman! DC's The Batman, set in Gotham City, is truly a crime genre film. It's directed by Matt Reeves and stars Robert Pattinson (Bruce Wayne), Zoë Kravitz (Selena Kyle / Catwoman), Paul Dano (Edward Nashton / The Riddler), Jeffrey Wright (Lieutenant Gordon), Colin Farrell (Oswald Cobblepot / Penguin), John Turturro (Carmine Falcone) and Barry Keoghan (The Joker). This is my favorite DC Comics film adaptation.

This movie definitely needs to be watched atleast 2 times, one for the whole plot, one for just Robert's performance.

You can see he’s mentally at a roadblock where he doesn’t value life in any way and when he can’t be the Batman he just seems like an awkward human being who doesn’t really know how to act or even stand normally in a social environment, he just wants to be a total recluse, a massive introvert and just feels like he’s exposed and vulnerable. As Batman he played an incredibly strong silent type that’s easily the smartest in the room and can be perfectly clam in most situations, but then can instantly flip that and lose his shit unleashing all the rage that he’s bottling in to the point where he struggles to stop himself when someone mentally gets the better of him and starts teasing him

Penguin and his goons are having a gunfight with gordan and selena, then all of a sudden this ear-shattering scream of a jet turbine spooling in a dark corner just makes them all stop and look. You don't really see anything but these flashes of light, and the characters have no damn clue what it is. It's by far the most goosebumps-inducing noise ever, and you see the immense fear in everyone's faces as they shit in their pants.

It's even better with every viewing! seen it 3 times now! This film delivers the gritty noir style crime thriller I've always wanted to see in a Batman movie. It's a true detective story that explores the corruption of Gotham in much deeper way than we've ever seen on the big which extremely impressive following Nolan's trilogy. Of course all the performances are top notch and Robert Pattinson KILLED it as Batman! I think he succeeded in silencing many of the ignorant idiots and naysayers that were bringing up Twilight who clearly hadn't seen any of his work outside of that franchise.
This version of Batman isn't interested in putting on the billionaire playboy persona yet. His only focus is being Batman. That's why even in the funeral scene he doesn't say much and barely responds to anyone because he's a man on a mission. But it'll be cool to see him evolve into a more traditional Batman that manages the public image of Bruce Wayne.

@@raebeingreal2170 …except it was clear from the promo material what type of movie this was and people whined about it being a different movie when Matt Reeves made it clear multiple times that this was NOT going to be a typical superhero movie. He also made it clear that he intended for this early Bruce Wayne to not have developed the playboy persona yet - people complained that Bruce Wayne wasn’t this charismatic playboy in the film. He also made it clear that this was a noir film - people complained about it being too dark. Then, it was announced a while before the film premiered that it was going to be an almost 3 hour long film - people complained about the length after watching the film. Then, Reeves also said very clearly that this Batman puts emphasis on him being the “world’s greatest detective” and that it was going to be more of a detective film than an action film- people complained about that contributing to why the film didn’t have fight scenes every 2 seconds. I mean, all the complaints show is that people don’t pay attention and expect Marvel film qualities out of every superhero movie. Speaking the truth about people’s lack of attention skills isn’t being “degrading”. It’s being honest. If people payed attention, they would’ve known what type of film this was from the start and wouldn’t have made any of those complaints. “True fans” pay attention to things like that.

I love how even though you give credit to Matt Reeves’ direction, you acknowledge that it truly is Robert Pattinson’s acting chops that serve this character so well in this film. I have seen some people get upset at others for complimenting Pattinson’s performance in the film and replying “credit to Matt Reeves for an amazing Batman” and while that’s true, people can’t forget that it’s a collaborative thing between director and actor. Because for that matter, by the logic THOSE people go by - this would apply to ALL films and there is no point in the entire “best actor/actress” category in award shows if all we are going to do completely credit a director for an actor’s performance. A director can direct 15 people to do the same exact scene and the actors would all do it in their own way. Matt Reeves wanted Robert Pattinson for this role, WROTE this role for him in mind after seeing “Good Time”.. so yes the actor playing it does make a huge difference and some people need to stop pretending all of its greatness of the character lies on only Matt’s shoulders. Pattinson really did do amazing and he is now my favorite live action Batman. I feel like it won’t be an Oscar contender, not because I don’t think it has the chops - because it does, but the Oscars honestly really only pay attention to films released during and after September. The Batman has been released so early on in the year that by the time award talks start happening later, it will be drowned out by other films that came out in that period. They always call that period “award season” for a reason… which sucks bc I really do think Pattinson deserves an Oscar nom (he honestly deserved one years ago for Good Time and the Lighthouse) and this film does too. But it’s early release date may have hurt those chances.

    • @birdies8397
      @birdies8397 2 года назад

Agreed! I feel like a lot of people underestimate the contribution of an actor’s performance, if they’re allowed to have creative freedom. I wanted to emphasize that last part because in the Twilight films, the directors and the producers didn’t let him act the character the way he wanted to. There was an interview with Howard Stern where Pattinson explained that it got to a point where his agent flew in during a lunch break to tell him to stop whatever he was doing or otherwise, he was going to be fired that day. So, everything was basically at the mercy of the director and the production team, which ended up falling flat (that and also those films had bad scripts and bad source material). I’ve heard that after Twilight, Pattinson made a conscious effort to choose his projects carefully where his performance won’t be under the control of any committee. For Batman and pretty much all his other performances, you can tell he had freedom with what he could do with his character. Ex: it was Pattinson’s idea to change the sequence at the beginning where he beats those goons. Originally, he was going to say “I’m vengeance” right after one of those goons asked who he was, then beat him down. Pattinson wanted to beat him down first, then say “I’m vengeance”. He also added those 2 extra punches at the end of the beat down sequence. It worked perfectly. He deserves a lot more credit. Kudos to Reeves for allowing him to do that! Pattinson does a similar thing with all his other characters. Ex: I read not too long ago that he created his character’s backstory in “The Rover” and made the decision to have the makeup team make his teeth look rotten because his character’s mental deficiencies would’ve made him neglect his teeth. He also used his lips to hide his character’s teeth at some points for that reason, which added a bit to the speech impediment. Dude’s a genius, imo. I know I couldn’t do it. 😂 Learning all this behind the scenes info has definitely solidified him as one of my top 5 favorite actors.
I don’t know about an Oscar nom for this, as I think it has too many systematic things with the Academy stacked against it, but we’ll see. It sucks that the chances of being nominated for an Oscar means having to fit within a very specific but arbitrary box, even down to the release date. Why can’t it just be based on quality alone??? Things like release date, the actor needing to be “seen” when playing the character, bias against superhero flicks, etc. shouldn’t affect it. Those reasons are why Paul Dano and Colin Ferrell probably won’t be nominated or win, either. Paul Dano especially is a SUPER underrated actor.

So when I was going in to watch The Batman inspite of all the hype around it, I wasnt expecting to like it, let alone love it!! I was so overwhlemed with this movie that after my first watch, I came out of the cinema and bought the ticket for the next available time which was immediate. 6 hours of my life watching back to back that I do not regret and will be watching again this weekend. Evertything about this movie was just well done!!! It left me speechless and wanting more. So I am with you, this is the the best batman movie..period!! Btw, first time on your channel and love your review.

I heard someone talk about Batman not killing in a thought around the chase scene. It was presented as though Batman caused the truck flip. But it was Penguin who caused the truck spin (I got you) but with what you said: it shows the flaws of Batman told throughout the film. When he began chasing Penguin he had tunnel vision in tracking down who he believed to be the rat. He reacted with everything from a tunneled vision perspective all movie. Even in his relationship with Alfred.

Also, Matt Reeves said the joker scene wasn't a sequel set up. He has no plans as of now to put the joker in the first sequel or not.
He said that scene was the completed story arch for riddler where he doesn't feel defeated anymore, he's proud of himself, realizes he doesn't need Batman bcuz he does have a friend and has regained hope in the same way (and on the flip side of the coin) that the people of Gotham have hope by the end of the movie and also proves what Catwoman said to Batman in their final scene. That Gotham is going to get worse. Batman has inspired his villains to go darker and work together.

My favorite part of Robert Pattinsons acting is when alfred has told him he has a meeting early in the morning if you watch him walk into the room where alfred is decoding the cipher, once he steps into the light through the window he winces and reacts like someone who is not used to being around in the light. A few moments later and he puts on sunglasses

At first i thought Pattinson's acting was pretty good, then i realizes that he rarely spoke except when he's angry but the whole time i know what he's feeling in the cowl. Thats fantastic. The no angry eyebrow on the cowl itself really help to amplify his expressions and eye-acting. And not only that he is feel different enough to other batman's performance to not feel derivative, and make it its own. This movie wont be as good if he's not doing great job especially 90% of screen time contains him as batman/bruce (esp as Batman).

FINALLY! A quality review of this masterpiece of a film. I've seen so many reviews of people who say they loved the movie but then spent 20 minutes picking it apart and criticizing the most ridiculous things but what I found most surprising was the amount of pretty big channels that TOTALLY missed the whole point of the plot. This is such a perfect year 2 Batman story, which we've never seen before, yet everyone is comparing it to other Batman movies. This movie is its own iteration and in my opinion not only the best Batman movie, or best comic book movie ever, it's one of my favorite films ever period

People died thanks to both Batman and the penguin. Yet Batman just leaves the Penguin. No arrest. No prison time for Penguin, for killing those people in the highway. Hr just lets the Penguin go. It's like the director FORGOT about this part completely.

My biggest concern going into the movie was regarding the chase scene. I was so worried they gave it away in the trailers…
But to see the movie and find that scene is WAAAAAAY longer than what I ever expected but my gods did I fucking LOVE every second of that scene. It may very well be my favorite chase scene I’ve seen in any movie I’ve seen.
And then there’s upside down, fiery shot as he’s walking up to the penguin. I saw the movie with a friend (it was her second viewing) and leaned over saying “hooooly shit this shot is BEAUTIFUL”. I got goosebumps the instant it came on screen.

Have to say first again, I love this style of review you're trying. It really works with the energy you bring to your videos generally, so I hope you continue doing them for films you have much to say about (DS2, I hope!). That said- I wanted to say that while I've only seen the film once so far (but will see it again Monday) I completely agree. I didn't dislike the Joker scene for what it is, but it felt unnecessary. I've heard Reeves explanation for it, but it still felt out of place. I also felt similarly about the voicemail scene as it was happening but once it had played out- I, too, fully appreciated it. The ultimate theme I took away from the film is the indulgent or gratifying nature of vengeance. We justify our misdeeds based on the wrongs that have been done to us. We avoid the hard thing because it feels good to punch back. The scene you mentioned where Batman reached out to save the son of the Mayor is not just a mirror of himself- but its his opportunity to do the right thing when he failed to just moments before. It mirrors the scene with Batman and Riddler at Arkham- when Batman belittled and rebuked Riddler (you're a psychopath, etc)- it was an opportunity to extend a hand to the exposed inner orphan that was Edward Nashton and perhaps avert the disaster to come, instead, he chose the self-gratifying option and sealed the events to come. So, when Batman chose saving the boy over fighting the Riddler acolytes, he was saving himself, yes, but also acknowledging that brutality isn't the only way to send a message to those who would do harm. That's how I saw it, anyway.

What I love most about this film is that Reeves is so confident in his direction that in many moments he puts his trust implicitly in us, the viewers, to have us use our own imagination to finish his narrative; making us not just willingly participating but investing in this universe. The Batman is a movie that lingers on ones mind after viewing and it’s a feeling that I don’t necessarily want to let go of, yet.
I don’t think there’s a single creative artist (including Matt Reeves & Co.), upon hearing your last two minutes of this video, that won’t go, “this is why we do what we do and it was worth it.” Beautiful essay.
