2nd year site visit to the Bonnet Carré Spillway! Students are gearing up to design a visitor's center. Chatted with Park Ranger Rusty Munson about the site's seasonal changes. It was fully dry at the moment but in the spring, it is completely full! This spillway plays a crucial role in protecting New Orleans from major floods by directing excess water from the Mississippi River into Lake Pontchartrain and then the Gulf. Constructed in 1931 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it's a key piece in the region's flood control strategy.
