It always looks like to me that they start their turn way too early. Past the buoy then think about turning, but by the time they turn, their apex at turning is wider then. Try turning later. Let the buoy touch your leg at the end of the turn not the beginning.
I remember reading a story by Bob La Point about using your front foot in a Water Ski magazine in the late eighties or there about, like the way old mate Dane uses plenty of front foot
Chris and Bob La Point both had a fore and aft rock over the ski to slow down. Used to ski with them in CA Delta in the 70's. I don't think anyone can ski as good as they did today.
I used to to be involved in water skiing in UK. Rope lengths seem to get shorter & shorter, whereby the tallest guy wins, is it time to do something other than keep shortening the line, like increasing the max speed?
Something should be done but faster can't work without serious injuries. The course needs to be reworked, move the balls farther apart and closer together or make the course 8 or 10?
Old question. Interesting suggestions. These performances are amazing to old slalom geezers like me. ( “reaching out, approaching ball 80”) Back in the last century we tried raising the speed during the 1960’s. 38 mph. was too dangerous and way too soon after raising to 36 mph. Too many injuries on our bevelled and concave wood skis with ‘wrap-around’ rubber front binders.
Ok, I guess we have to leave things as they are & let the tall guys have it, after all they don't keep altering the hoop for basket ball or the bar for high jump. Incidentally, whatever happened to the "buey" now they seem to be "balls".
The top guys in the world tend to be over 6ft, but not giants. All those guys in the run off around 6ft 2in. And the women's world record held by Regina Jacques who is something like 5ft 4! So height definitely relevant but lots of other important factors.
@@MFSII Yeah a difficult conundrum to overcome, same as high jump I guess, guy with longest legs wins, but I know there is a lot more to it than just reach. I remember the old Taperflex, more works of art than much else, look nice mounted on the wall, but mine got incinerated when my boat caught fire!
You wouldn’t have a fraction as much control. The rear foot does 95% of the work, having it completely strapped and locked down like the front one would mean you couldn’t pivot and shift your foot from side to side along with making any adjustments for what side of the wake your on or hitting outside wake chop.
They are slalom skiing, so they have to get the ski to the outside of the bouis. The small wake of the boat is beneficial to the skier as opposed to having a big wake like wakeboarding.
I learned on wood Busch gardens skis that he cut down and refinished to fit me and my older sister when we were in middle school. I was pulled behind a late 80's Sierra (Cobra Hull) with a 3.0L merc I/O. The wake was a ramp and I could cut hard enough back then to pull that little boat out of line. My dad enjoyed pulling me as much as I loved skiing. One summer, he upgraded to a Ski Brendella tow rig with a 351. I bet we put on 15hrs/week. Being in Michigan, we would run the lake into fall. I would get home from football practice, we would eat as a family, then hit the lake. I would make as many passes as my body could take. Sometimes we would skip the course and just run endurance. It was about 3 miles around the lake and back. Just taking it steady hitting smooth extended cuts. I could barely walk when I would finally let go by the dock. He would always tell me I was amazing and I would keep pushing myself faster, smoother, harder. Never reached these guys' level but I loved the time with my dad. He made me feel like he was my biggest fan and it gave me all my confidence. I miss all of it.
Waste of time and money. Low iq sport…no thinking just swinging. Wakeboarding requires a much bigger spacial and mental iq because every flip we do is a different sport while in the air.
Water ski racing is Better than both, high speed, requires great skiers, good drivers, all sorts of different classes and great fun to be side by side with another skier with your smoc boats fully trimmed at 85mph
@@Mobev1 planes aren’t fun, going 75 mph in rough conditions in a lake race thinking ahead by pacing yourself to last the whole race at those speeds while simultaneously staying ahead of your rivals is much harder, funner and better than wake boarding.

I've always wondered why don't competitive slalom skiers have a rear boot? It seems like it would add some stability

They do use one, it is just smaller.

Typically 2 skis are used to learn how to ski before going to 1
