The most favorite memory of my mother was when my mother, my sisters, and myself were dancing to this song back in the summer of 79. For the first five years of my life my mother was a drug addict, and she had a bad overdose that year. The county almost took us away from her, and the only way she could get us back was if she got clean. She came home, and we turned on the radio...She heard this song, grabbed us, and started dancing. That was the happiest I ever saw her, and there were few times she was happy, but she was so glad to be with us. My mother stayed clean for us, and she never used again. But this song will always be special
Back in 1980 I put on this song for my 85-year old grandmother, who was raised on a farm in Czechoslovakia. Didn't speak much English, and never listened to music. When the intro started, she perked up and proclaimed, "It makes me want to dance." So, we did! Thanks, Mr. Alpert.

Awesome story. Reminds me of my own marriage. Life is complex and there's often a lot of unnecessary pain, but if your dad was anything like me, he accomplished his mission. He managed to imprint onto you a special part of himself that lives on in your heart beyond the LP or anything physical. Now it's time for you to pass it down to your children.
I just clicked on this, and I was a little girl again playing in the front yard with my little friends and family members in the summertime and my granny sitting on the front porch watching us and just smiling. Man, what I wouldn't do to get those days back again. Missing my loved ones who aren't here anymore.

ME TOO , was 12 when it came out,, was mostly played when we had had a party about to happen at our house, happier times for my parents.... just saw a movie with this as the theme... still rocking!!!
I knew a guy who worked at an AM radio station, WLKK AM 1400, here in Erie, Pennsylvania. I worked as a producer during the same time as a weekend producer. This wonderful tune was selected to be his intro music when he came on the air at 6 am every morning. At 6 bells, I would hear NBC chimes, NBC radio news, then the air would be filled with this song and it was epic. It left a lasting memory from a time when I was involved with a great radio station and the people who worked within it.
+betoen There are all kinds of people in this World with different tastes, likes and dislikes. Although I respect their opinions I do not share them. After all we all have a right to exist. Regards.
This song is a part of what also makes classic Hip-Hop music so great. Had it not been for Hypnotize by the Notorious BIG containing a sample of this song I probably never would've found this amazing piece of work.
I just found this gem by chance and I’m absolutely blown away that this is where “Hypnotize” originated from. That drop at 3:23 is instantly recognizable and this has got to be the original
Same! I was just listening to this... I'm sure I've heard it before and never paid attention, but when THAT riff came through... I knew instantly. Solid. Gold.
Years ago, I met an electrician who had done work for Herb at his home in Los Angeles. He said that you'd never meet a nicer guy in the world: just a humble, regular guy who treated everyone the same. Without knowing Herb, I'm just not surprised.
I first heard this music when I was in junior high school. Hearing this song, I was fascinated by the world of adults. And now I find myself playing it for my grandchildren.
I can remember cruising through Harlem with my dad in his monte Carlo listening to this, he passed on 2 years ago, r.i.p. dad, thanks so much for the memories.
The irony. A few years ago Herb Albert read that they had closed down a school of music in Harlem due to financial problems. Herb Albert donated 500k to the school. And they were able to reopen!
I AM FROM EL SALVADOR , LIVING IN BOSTON MASS SINCE LATE 90'S , WHEN I WAS A KID MY FATHER USED TO TAKE ME TO HIS OLD (SENIOR) BARBER GUY FOR M 6 MONTHS CUT AFTER MY 1 BDAY , AND THERE I LEARNED HOW TO LOVE THE MUSIC OF THIS GREAT PERFORMER, NOW ALL I REMEMBER IS THE OLD GLORIOUS TIMES I LOVED AND I FEAR THEY'LL NEVER BE BACK . Yes! It's 2021. This man is such an outstanding talent. Notorious B.I.G sampled Mr. Alperts music from "RISE" and created one of his biggest hits in the rap genre.

Kate Boyle My Dad played this song probably a few hundred times in his car over the years with me riding shotgun. Now he is gone and this song makes me think of him as much as any song ever. I’m glad to know someone else out there feels what I do. This song also made an appearance on one of my favorite shows....Mindhunter season 1.
My Mom use to drive this blue Chevy Impala and this song played quite often back then on the radio...Her laugh!I love you and I miss you Mama❤ Rest in Heaven Dec 21,1955-Nov 2002
My third wife Kathy Ann used to dance to this privately and publicly in nightclubs . God bless her. We were married from 1981 until 2008. She divorced me, but I still love her!!! I heard a rumor that she has passed away. Only Jesus can ever reunite us and our two kids and grand kids. Divorce SUCKS. Hang on to true love when God lets you find it!!! And also music producer, businessman, accomplished artist, philanthropist and so on. Herb Alpert continues to make music, and has done so for nearly seven decades.
My mother used to dance to this song in the living room as I watched how it always brought her to life all while watching General Hospital! Lol, if some you all remember the theme to Luke and Laura. Great times..
OMG I love that they played this song on General Hospital with Luke and Laura. But it breaks my heart that it’s in a context of controversy because but before they became such a smoldering couple in love, he forced himself on her when this song played 😢
So many artists sampled this classic. My dad would listen to my rap then show me where they get their beats from. God I miss this cool times. RIP DAD love and miss you. 😢
Nice. I do this with my babies. They're absolutely shocked at how many songs they listen to that have sampled another song, also how I can take them right to the original.
How can I have been two years old and remember my mother playing this in our 1978 Pontiac Bonneville and I listen to it so often today? The power of music.
I first heard this song when I was a young teenager and am now 67 and love it as much now as I did when I first heard it. A timeless piece, that knows no borders, still groovin' to the music here in Canada 🇨🇦!

Agreed. But we need to give credit where credit is due. It was composed by Andy Armer and Randy Alpert. Props to the rest of the band too. The bassline kills.
I've played the trumpet 55 years and while there are many great trumpet players who display great range and technique, but when it comes to trumpet style no one comes close to Herb Alpert! His music is happy and relaxing, it takes you away from this complex world. Herb was my main influence and inspiration when I first picked up the trumpet in 1964! Thank you Herb for all your wonderful music and terrific style!🎺🎵🎶
I started playing trumpet in 1968 and yes, Herb was one of my great inspirations. I had many of his TJB records. I also had the sheet music to the 'Beat of the Brass' Album. I remember playing 'This Guy is in Love with You'. I played the trumpet part and my music teacher played the accompanying piano part. Great memories! I played through high school then switched to sports in college. The allure of the soccer pitch was too much. I have thought about picking up a horn and playing again. I use to always want a Bach Strat but could not afford one in high school (they were a boat load in 70's dollars). Well, now I can afford many of them, so if I ever play again, yes it will be a Bach Strat!
mzoziety Mine did too ! He played this in his office while he worked . Just listening to it now makes me think of him and vision him so clearly going in and out of his office doing his paper work . I miss my Dad Very Very Much 💔💔😢😢
Herb Alpert is a musical genious IMHO. I love how this song builds slowly. Really an example of quality disco. Beautiful trumpet as always by Mr. Alpert. Just when you hadn't heard much from him on the radio this song emerged out of nowhere and blew me away. It's a song I literally never get sick of. How many songs can anyone identify with in that way? Thank you for posting this gem and this wonderful memory for me.
Whoa Frank! Frank please tell me that was a typo. My man, That's NOT DISCO. I was "of age " during the era. This was, and IS a piece of history and ART. Disco was "club music" There were a few good tunes, but 2 totally different genres of music. And I'm not sure what comprises "quality disco" Please enlighten me. Just sayin 😊✌🇺🇸
One of my Mom And Dads favorite bands when I was young. I'm 56 now and remember hearing the record on our Zenith stereo console tv. I miss my pops but still have my moms.
Undoubtedly the greatest record made by the tijuana brass man Herb Alpert, a smoothy Jazz Funk, this was also one of the biggest tracks of 1979, it was being played everywhere, eventualy going platinum, rise & shine it's a friday morning, wake up drop the needle on the wax, cos its really time to "Rise" up

It is impossible to walk down the street listening to this song and not exude monumental swag
So true...
: )
I was working a late nite call at work (no fun) and pandora kicked this on my Chuck Mangione channel. I was exuding monumental swag in my chair while working the problem at work. Made a bad night good.
Going to play this walking on the treadmill at the gym. 😀
My brother is is a generation Z- the music he listens to today is damaging my ears.
I got sick with cancer, n my daughter whom isn't here anymore, would play this song for me n tell me I was a strong woman n to rise. But sadly she too got cancer 5 years after me. She lived 6months making memories n I raised her 4 babies. She Said.. mom it's my time but your time to Rise. Take care my children...😢

Listening in 2023! Love this. Reminds me so much of my dad, growing up in Miami 1980s without a care in the world. Love you dad, RIP dad i miss you so much.
Herb is the only artist in the rock era who managed to reach # 1 with both a vocal & an instrumental-Quite an accomplishment!
I was 16 when this song came out. I still get the same exotic sensual undertones who the instruments playing. A natural high without the drugs. Salute, Herb Alpert
I was 7 yrs old. Timeless from whenever discovered
I was 5 and I still remember how cool this groove was, and is.
@Herb Alpert
My birthday was in June. I played this song twice. Yes. *RISE* is the ish. Again, I say SALUTE.

1979 classic
I knew a guy who worked at an AM radio station, WLKK AM 1400, here in Erie, Pennsylvania. I worked as a producer during the same time as a weekend producer. This wonderful tune was selected to be his intro music when he came on the air at 6 am every morning. At 6 bells, I would hear NBC chimes, NBC radio news, then the air would be filled with this song and it was epic. It left a lasting memory from a time when I was involved with a great radio station and the people who worked within it.
It's 2024 and I'm still listening to this masterpiece ❤ and mind you I'm only 23 years old
Cuz it's classic. And u got good taste

Yes it actually is, he just loop that actual part and decrease the speed, loop a bar, and add an effect
Yes sir. I recalled that Biggie rap sampling this song.
💯 i did a double take when i heard that 😅 had to explain it to my husband
Good sample
I'm listening in 2020. NO matter how old, this is so cool.

The irony. A few years ago Herb Albert read that they had closed down a school of music in Harlem due to financial problems. Herb Albert donated 500k to the school. And they were able to reopen!

Musician, composer, arranger, sound engineer, singer, actor....and all at a level few can match. This is his masterpiece.
And also music producer, businessman, accomplished artist, philanthropist and so on. Herb Alpert continues to make music, and has done so for nearly seven decades.
The "A" in A&M Records
All of his songs are amazing. But this one is my favorite.

When meeting Hugh Masekala on a M10 bus to Harlem I mentioned how well his influence on Alpert transformed his style. 🎉 🤩✌️ RIP
Right on. Well said my friend
Surreal dynamics skill. Just perfect volume and sustain each time.
1964 a great year for sure my birth year
I started playing trumpet in 1968 and yes, Herb was one of my great inspirations.

Whoa Frank! Frank please tell me that was a typo. My man, That's NOT DISCO. I was "of age " during the era. This was, and IS a piece of history and ART. Very well stated.
