This week we visited Mirabelle 16 a sailboat designed by Eric Prang.
We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? Check out our website to know more about it www.oddlifecrafting.com/blog
We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
SUBSCRIBE to our channel and join us every SUNDAY for a new episode of our journey!!

Make sure to buy your cork only directly from Portugal, don't get your mind stuck on just brown, you can have any colour you wish and even use cork leather as waterproof fabric for your seat cushions, it is durable and feels so soft and smooth, plus it's amazing to sew with, I use it to make bags ❤

Love the safety features - duplicated systems, sealed compartments - and the head room below! Using the hull as a radiator is a great no thru-hulls solution. Electric boats have been around for 185 years; hopefully they'll figure out how to play well with Lithium batteries soon.

In principle, electric drives are very simple and reliable. The motors and controllers are mechanically very simple, and batteries are also highly reliable now. So the issues may be integration problems.
My favorite things about that boat is that they use coolant in contact with the hull for heating and cooling using a heat pump, and for cooling the generator.
And of course the use of Aluminum and electric drive. Well done!
    Muito obrigado e merci beaucoup!

I was a French major in college, spent a semester over in Besancon, France, and then became an elementary school teacher and basically forgot my French. A year or so ago, I signed up with Babel (after turning 80, no less) and am having quite the fun time seeing what I had forgotten and surprisingly what I still recalled. Good for y'all for being considerate of your new friends and speaking to them rather than them having to use a "foreign" language to respond. Good relations like that make your build a lot more fun for all.

So French, so unburdened with tradition and so unconventional! Wonderful design. A tiny thing I'd change: the edge on the hatches, that's a nasty injury waiting to happen at sea in bad weather. Some kinda foam or plastic edging would solve it.

I was born and raised in Indonesia and in later life lived and worked in Indonesia again. Bahasa is the first language I ever spoke as a child. Nevertheless, I am of a Dutch-colonial family, so I speak Dutch. I had six years of German and eight years of French at school, so I speak French and German, too. Finally, I spent years working for newspapers and magazines in Singapore, Australia, New Zealand etc, so I speak English. That's five languages I am proficient in, but I dabbled in a few others as well, like Tagalog (I was married to a Filipina once, and used to spend a lot of time in Manila) and Spanish. I don't have many skills, but languages are kind of my thing.

This guy is clearly of the Andre Citroen school of design... and hes just built a Citroen DS of a vessel.❤ 😂
Did you see the window in the forward lockers for checking the anchor haul.
His problem is not the electric motors but the software parameters for the battery power management charging system🙄 .. 45kw motors are equivalent about 90hp but with more torque low down and would be almost silent apart from the prop shaft bearings. He had clearly thought the design through. Though i would have extended the bridge deck cockpit roof to carry more solar. 🤔
Still with the boat only 6months old he is still debugging the electronics that comes down to the battery pack design and trying to get different pieces of hardware and software talking to each other and not tripping the BMS.
Newer battery chemistries being delivered now and also worked on now will be less sensitive to temperatures and charge or draw rates.
They also promise greater capacity life spans and safety.
Both Nio and BYD have swappable standard packs for automotive use .. and
Blade cells are more space efficient, safe and serviceable than batteries made up of traditional round cells.
The cost of the new types of cells should be less as they get away from the use of lithium and other rarer metals used to increase the performance and stability of Li cells.
Na is cheap and incredibly stable available globally and generally less polluting in terms of mining and refining.
For a really interesting insight look up Two bit Dvinchies latest video on Na Zn vanadium cells. 🤔😎.
Walking on a metal deck would be awful with bare feet even wood like teak gets hot so insulating with cork above and again below decks through to the
hull keel reduces noise and prevents energy loss through 🥶 or overheating🥵 . Two problems that will only get worse with time and travelling out of the temperate zones.

How is its direction holding? I guess it must have bilge keels or a full keel for its ability to point in seas? It is an awesome roomy boat going back to the old ships it would be awesome to live in but not sure what it would be like at anchor or rolling seas. If it behaved at anchor in poor weather I could see this becoming a cruiser's preferred style. I just suspect the old ships used ports because they behaved poorly.
Space of a catamaran without the fore aft pogo and rigging stresses in variable weather I would love to find out more of its characteristics.
