    • @pierreabbat6157
      @pierreabbat6157 4 года назад +42

      "Republic" is from Latin; the Greeks prefer their own word. Although they may use the Latinate σίγουρο instead of the native ασφαλές.

    • @orestisbe6978
      @orestisbe6978 2 года назад +12

      We always use the word "democracy", rather than republic, so for us it's "the democracy of Turkey", "the democracy of Armenia", the "Hellenic Democracy", the "people's democracy of China", and so on.

    • @alex_gaimar
      @alex_gaimar 2 года назад +2

      @@orestisbe6978 yeah, I know, I just showed that as a translation. Which by the way made me question how you call countries with "Democratic Republic" in their names (especially to tell DR Congo and Rep. of Congo apart). In Ethiopia's case it's just one word, but in other cases it's either Λαϊκή Δημοκρατία). It's like People's Republic of China then? And then when it's "People's Democratic Republic", it's just two words, Λαϊκή Δημοκρατία or Λαοκρατική Δημοκρατία. Does it all sound natural?

    To add to Timor Leste being East East, before Timore Leste became an independent country it was an Indonesian province, and the official name for the province is Timor Timur. "Timur" is modern Indonesian for East, while Timor is (presumably, I admit I'm not an expert on this) the old indigenous language for East. Timor Timur, Eastern East, implies that there is a West East, and there is. Timor Barat was, and still is, an Indonesian province with "barat" meaning west. So we have Eastern East and Western East.

    The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, an appellation of country, which was personally given by President Kim Il Sung, clearly reflects the independent, genuine democratic and popular character of the Republic.
    The “democracy” in the state appellation implies a new type of democracy reflecting the actual reality of Korea which is in the stage of the anti-imperialist, anti-feudal democratic revolution.
    President Kim Il Sung defined the character of the Korean revolution as the anti-imperialist, anti-feudal democratic revolution, saying that a power to be built in the liberated fatherland should naturally be a system for the people, a democratic power championing the interests of the broad sections of popular masses.
    The word “democracy” has the profound meaning of the progressive democracy of our own style, fundamentally different from the “democracy” of a certain style being prevailed in the world.
    The progressive democracy of our own style, as President Kim Il Sung said, is a genuine one for the people which fundamentally differs from the bourgeois “democracy”, nothing but a screen to cover the exploitation and oppression of the people by a small number of privilegentsia who seized all power of the state.
    It was the genuine democracy, distinguished from democracy in the previous socialist countries. It fully represents the aspiration of the entire Korean people, demanding that the popular masses become the master of country and that all the people, except the reactionary elements, be ensured freedom and happiness.

While yes in practice communist countries are almost always authoritarian, in theory an economic theory that wants everyone to be equal should only be able to go along with a form of government that wants everyone to be equal, so communist countries should all be democratic if they're really living up to theoretical communism (which basically none ever did)

    Saying Ethiopia was colonized is like saying France was colonized, except there's a stronger case for France. Ethiopia was occupied during a portion of WW2, it was an allied power and Italy occupied some of it, being an axis power, before other allied countries liberated it later in the war. France, on the other hand, along with most other European countries, was entirely occupied and governed by another country during much off WW2. However you wouldn't say France, Poland, or Hungary were colonized. So you also wouldn't say that Ethiopia was colonized.

    A fully communist society can run perfectly fine alongside a fully functioning democratic state. There's nothing unusual about that, it's actually expected that the ideal communism should be a democracy.
    The opposite ideology of communism is capitalism, not democracy. The opposite ideology of democracy is authoritarianism. Communism and democracy is orthogonal.
    Communism is not necessarily authoritarian. In fact, the original idea of communist society, as the ideology was originally envisioned by Marx (rather than the ones that real world states ended up implementing), is actually quite anti-authoritarian and anti-state, bordering on anarchy (lack of government).
    The thinking is that when communism is achieved, the state should be mostly unnecessary. The idea of having a ruling class is the antithesis to communism, whose ultimate goal is a classless society.

    • @lead_sommelier
      @lead_sommelier 2 года назад

      This is kinda wrong. Communism is not something that runs alongside democracy, it is by definition more of an extension of the concept of democracy through workplace democracy, classlessness, ...

Lets say that they automatically give lower score when someone has 100% votes for one party, since it’s obviously scam. Such country could just make it 99,99% and get higher score, and then do similarly in other areas to jump up in ranking.

    There is actually a lot more countries that have the word "Republic" in their official name, most European Countries have it in their official title... For example, I come from Austria, whose official name is "Republik Österreich" (REPUBLIC of Austria). A more prominent example would probably be the "Bundesrepublik Deutschland" (=Federal REPUBLIC of Germany).
