Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a RUclips video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

I am from India and have lived in England since 2004..I think the best part about England is the people . Most of them are very polite, well mannered, knowledgeable, smart and have lots of empathy! That’s the main reason I love this country. Of course there’s also the history and culture, and the sheer beauty of the English countryside..even after all these years the pretty villages take my breath away! The weather and food are my major gripes, though 😄

Marky those of us who value the lessons of history know that Canada was the first of the Dominions to come to our side when we were faced with war.
The D Day Landings cost thousands of Canadian lives alongside our men assaulting Sword Beach.
It's a blood and kinship thing - Americans can be friends, but they're also foreigners - Canadians are kin.

    • @johnsalt1157
      @johnsalt1157 6 лет назад +7

Not wishing to be picky (Oh, who am I kidding?), but the Canadians landed in landing area Juno. Omaha and Utah were US; Sword and Gold were British; Juno was Canadian. As well as Canadians tackling one of the D-Day landing areas, and contributing one of the armoured divisions in 21st Army Group, it was the Candians, at Dieppe, who paid the price in blood to learn how not to conduct an amphibious landing.
If you get the chance, pop over the Channel and visit the Canadian memorial at Vimy to their battle dead of WW1. It's magnificent.
Less tangible than the Vimy memorial, but every bit as important, consider the Canadian contribution to the Battle of the Atlantic in WW2. This was the only campaign where the Axis stood a realistic chance of defeating us, and while sailors from all the free nations contributed, the escort work was done by, first, the RN, and, second, not the USN, but the RCN, which grew from a tiny pre-war force to be the third largest navy in the world by 1945.
"You ain't a foreigner" is quite right. Canadians are indeed family, and blood is thicker than water.

I took time out during my annual holiday in France to finally visit "the Normandy beaches." It was a very moving experience reading the information boards - I found myself fighting the tears. I have a Canadian second second cousin whose father was amongst the invading troops. Mercifully he survived to return to Ontario unlike the valiant souls who lie on Vimy Ridge. God Bless Canada.

I`m an Englishman living abroad in Japan. England has a lot of issues right now in terms of crime and politically so I cannot say I exactly miss it. However there are some things I love about my country. The beauty of the countryside in England is something that always stays with me. I love how you can feel our history still alive there. England`s history is like a real-life game of thrones in terms of castles, kings and queens. You can feel the medieval magic still alive on cold frosty mornings in English forests and fields. The thing I love most about England though, and it`s something you mentioned, is the sense of humor and the sense of carrying on. This is something I`ve noticed especially after working with Americans here. We don`t take ourselves seriously and have a dark, self-insulting sense of humor that is not only hilarious but is also very humble. Unfortunately I cannot say I feel as safe as I did in England when I was younger and I`m happy to be in Japan, but who knows what the future holds.

When I first visited Canada to see my brother, back in the late 70's, we were driving to North Bay and he casually said, do you realise that if you were to walk off this road into the woods and not be able to find this road again, you would die? Coming from a land where if you broke your leg, you'd be able to find a house within crawling distance, it was an eye opener. Canada is HUGE. They have a lake bigger than the whole of England an Wales combined. There are more lakes in Ontario alone than people. We stayed in a house that was just over 100 years old and were surprised to find that a school bus full of kids came to stand outside and look at it because it was so old! People from Canada who visit can't believe just how quickly the landscape and architecture change here. Just pop a few miles up the road and it's different, whereas in some provinces there, you can drive for a week and wouldn't know you'd set off, as it looks exactly the same.

    • @CanthusOfCandE
      @CanthusOfCandE 5 лет назад +3

That saying 'keep calm and carry on' was a slogan that only recently came to light, weirdly enough. It was originally a sign created for if the Nazis landed and started to take control, never happened so it never got used by the Mod. Then in the last 20 years or so it got rediscovered and plastered over anything that could sell merch.
So whilst it does perfectly sum up the British war time spirit and our reputation since then (as long as weather is not involved) the phrase itself was never popularised when people think it was. Seems that we never needed the sign anyway even if they had made land.

You'll find those burial mounds (barrows) which litter the countryside to be somewhat older than mediaeval...more likely Iron-Age, or even much older. The long barrow known as Wayland's Smithy, in Berkshire, dates back to 3,700BC. Many are even older. Most who work a five-day week are entitled to at least twenty-eight days of paid holiday per annum from their employer but the employer may have figured into that some public holidays and so people must read the small print of their contract of employment before signing. Not so much for part-timers. One climbs over a stile, passes-through a kissing gate or through a straightforward hinged gate. Some public footpaths pass through private gardens, although (as with public footpaths through farmland and other privately-owned rural land) one must stick to the path. May stop to admire the view or to have some refreshment but must stick to the path even then. Public bridleways are for those riding a horse, and for those on foot, but horses are not allowed onto public footpaths. One of the oldest footpaths in England is The Rideway (87 miles) which has been trodden by travellers for at least 5,000 years.

I do like reading your blogs , it's always interesting to hear how others see us. Two little things , burial mounds are not medieval but are much earlier . I have not looked it up , but they could well be 200 or 400 BC . If you come across a small round artificial hill . Usually in the middle of a field . They are motes , and are from the Norman invasion . Which happened in 1066 . Built as they were fighting local peoples as they took over the country . Temporary forts built on top of them out of wood . And were the precursor to castle building.

Berial traditions in prehistoric Britan are hard to get a lock down on. People used to think that people did different things in different periods and that is kind of true. Its more like people had their local traditions and did what their own ancestors did with slow evolutions and migrations. Confused the hell out of archeology for a long time.

I don't know if you already know this or if someone else said it but...
Back in the day a lot of pubs began as basically someone's living room, that they would open for the public to come in and pay to drink. Public houses over time shortened to pub, which is in part why so many of them have such a homey feel to them. It's why in some you'll see plates or other various bits n bobs on the wall, it is basically recreating a living room (or front room as I call it because i'm from Manchester and we're weird.)
Thank you for your kind words anyway.

I lived through the second world war as a child but can remember night after night bombs dropping from German planes and things being blown up, but everyone new that we would win the war, must be an English thing to think we will never be defeated and then its lets go and have a pint or make a cup of tea..

i agree with you about the london thing, there really is so much more, the further north you travel the more ancient sights and uniquely beautiful landscapes you will find, i mean like the lake district, it's one of the most visited places in england by people from places like china japan and south korea that isn't a major city, absolutely stunning landscapes and old architecture, for example i stayed in a house that is 600 years old (obviously restorations have been made but there done in the old style) and all the amazing sights and as some people would say "cute" cafes and shops, the lake district in my opinion is the best place in the world and there are so many beautiful castles and sights all over the north.

the British psyche has had 2500 years of people invading it and trying to destroy it and dominate it. We've had plenty of time to pass down a "don't worry, this too shall pass" attitude through the generations. Terror comes to these shores and scores a cheap and easy victory but the people band together stronger in the face of it because we've been through much, much worse in 2500 years.
glad you're enjoying the UK, it's a tiny island (you could fit it 3x into BC!) but the history, good and bad, and the tales it has to tell are remarkable. the Magna Carta, the industrial revolution, art, literature, music, engineering that changed the world (the tube for example opened in 1863!).

I loved how you mentioned about how foreigners only mention London when they think about England! It's so annoying because when I meet someone from America or Canada or wherever, they always assume that I am from London. I only visit there like once every couple of years. I live in the countryside up north and I think people are much nicer up here and the scenery and landscape is beautiful but not everybody gets to experience it because they usually go to London. I would also recommend you go to a football match if you haven't already, even if you don't like sport it will be a great experience with all the crowd chanting and enjoying the game. If you are near Southampton they have a decent team or Brighton or Bournemouth. You're actually spoilt for choice in the south east and you'll get a day at the beach with Fish and Chips to boot. As a Brit, these are all things I tend to take for granted or things I just generally don't notice as I've grown up with it and it's just always been that way for me, so I think it's great to get an outsider perspective on this.
As you mentioned in this video, "Keep Calm and Carry On". This I feel symbolises the indomitable spirit of Great Britain. Salopian (Shropshire) folklore is something pretty special. Like how the Wrekin hill is a dead Welsh giant called Gwendol who wanted to flood Shrewsbury but was saved by a cobbler, the devil creating a chair on top of the Stiperstones as he tried to fill Hell's Gutter the entrance to hell itself, our own 'Robbin Hood' named Humphrey Kynaston who was a highwayman that took from the rich and gave to the poor, or how legendary King Arthur was buried in Shropshire along with his sword Excalibur.
If you like poetry give 'A Shropshire Lad' a read, it's a collection of something like 63 poems.
As you might be able to guess I'm from Shropshire.

You need to go up north. Visit Manchester, Liverpool. And if you love the countryside, visit Yorkshire. It's not nicknamed 'God's own country' for no reason. :)

You're welcome. You should visit more of the north though. Manchester & Liverpool are two great cities. Chester, Lancaster and York are three really nice historical cities as well. Also when you get a chance. Vist the lakes up in Cumbria. . If you ever fancy going to Wales visit Anglesea and Snowdonia. It's beautiful around there. And for Scotland visit Ben Nevis, Loch ness and Edinburgh which is a great city as well.

Pub names used to interesting historically.
We can't call a pub the Saracen's Head anymore , but it is part of the history.
The Red Lion used to be fairly common , but now we end up with The Slug and lettuce !!!!

Being a brit, you mentioned things that I just take for granted. Perhaps we are not such a bad lot after all. Thank you! PS Canada is fantastic.

Britons, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Danes, Vikings, Normans, and more recent waves of immigration. You also have "ages" stone age, bronze age, iron age, farming, feudalism, start of capitalism, industrial revolution, digital age. So much to see and explore. The other thing is the landscape can change a lot just within a few miles so there is a lot to see without going too far. In some larger countries you may have to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to see real differences in the landscape and architecture.

Thankyou for noting that Britain isn't just London. It's annoying that most people visiting the country go to London; it's our country at its worst in many ways.

Not every visitor from overseas are willing to do a little pre-visit research?

Thank you for the kind words. Made me immensely proud.
    Long live the British pub.
Have you managed to visit the north of England or even over the border to Scotland? It’s beautiful and there’s some lovely walks.
