  • I get a lot of questions about whether I like England more (where I'm currently living) or Canada (where I was born and raised). Both countries have their pros and cons so I figured it would be an interesting topic! Here's why England is better than Canada (coming from a Canadian!)
    This week I'll go over why I like England more than Canada. In a few weeks I'll do the reverse and explain why I like Canada more :)

    Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.

      Yes, Bristol is closer to Bath (only 13 miles) but most tourists are not as interested in Bristol as they are in Bath and Oxford. Typical tourist is more apt to visit Bath and Oxford, while skipping Bristol.

      I think the difference is a lot of Americans or most people besides Europeans for that matter use cars more than the train etc. it’s like once u have a car u don’t waste money on transportation. However I’ve noticed in Europe because you all think that the distances are great, you would rather use a train than a car and get stuck in traffic. It was strange to me because I’m from the Caribbean and we don’t use public transportation once we own a car, however when I went to england and was staying in Shoreham (left of Brighton) anytime we went to London, we would take the train and I’d get confused like everyone I was with had a car, why couldn’t we just use it? It usually ended in them telling me it’ll take over 2 hours so the train is better as it usually just took about 45 minutes to an hour and a half but for Americans and Canadians or even people in the Caribbean, we would still take our car because it saves money and gives us more freedom. To me, if something is two hours away, that’s not that far

I found the British to be rather warm compared to us in North America. And more honest somehow. No fake smiles in stores when you go into a store. The interactions are more genuine than those we experience in Canada with strangers.

Stunning places too and nature . I'm hoping to move to Canada with my husband it's tough deciding were is best .He has degree in computer forensics etc and law I work for the crown .He worries we will only get good tech jobs in Ontario Ottawa as he doesn't speak French (yet) and other places though lovely will not have the jobs. I'm a bit anxious at leaving British way of life, local beautiful pubs , bustling town bars and restaurants and I wanted really to have larger house with garden , I love gardening but I'm finding you don't really get gardens in places were we would need to live . I know there's parks ,we have hundreds of them in Liverpool but it's not the same as your own private sanctuary .

      Canadian government federal and provincial get 3 weeks vacation when you start, plus stat holidays, as well as a little over two weeks of paid sick leave. 4 weeks after 8 years service, 5 weeks at 18 years and 6 weeks 23 years. If you work for a school board you get 3 weeks paid vacation as administration, stat holidays, plus christmas and march break. Faculty get holidays, breaks, and summers off. If you work for private it is 2 weeks but I hear they are trying to make it 3.

    Probably the reason some pubs feel like you're in someone's living room is that originally this is exactly what they were. Public houses were just somebody's front room where they'd buy a keg of beer and sell the beer to friends and neighbours.
    There are still a few tiny pubs which are just one room, I know of one in Austwick in the Yorkshire dales (assuming it's still open. It's a few years since I last went). There's a pub in Coventry called the Windmill which gradually grew over time. If you go in there's the "Black room" on the right hand side with a cast iron range which was the original pub. There's a tiny narrow room next to it which was the original bar where you got served, the serving hatch still remains. The room to the left was once a sweet shop next door, which the pub later bought. The flagstone floor between was once an alleyway between the two shops. The current bar and lounge were added later and the back room was once the brewing room and still has a large brewing vat inside and also a well!
    The town I grew up in was originally populated by glass workers and coal miners. back in the 18th century it had a population of 400 and 40 public houses! Each of these pubs would just have been someones front room with a keg of beer in it.

    I've always taken the "+1" channels for granted and never given them a second thought until you mentioned them in your video. If you are flicking through channels looking for something to watch and stumble across a movie that started 50 minutes ago or a 30 minute show that's about to end, the +1 channels come to the rescue. I think a couple of channels have a "+24" where they broadcast the same programming a day later. Most people are spoilt for choice with TV on demand when you get to watch what you want, when you want.

      Hi. On some t.v programmes or movies (I use sky so don't know if it is available on other satallite or terrestrial) but if you switch from one channel to another it will display that the movie started say 47 mins ago and you get the option to watch from the beginning. It's different from +1 as it will just go to the beginning no matter where in the movie it is.

      It's true, Brits national pass time is to complain about weather, even when it's actually not that extreme. I found the weather reports often react way over the top. If England gets -5c then the news starts saying its bone chilling and warning people to stay in doors. If its +31c then they start telling people to stay out of the sun as its boiling outside. If it snows 3cm they start telling people to stay in doors, dont drive. Maybe only time they dont worry is when it's raining! 😁

I reremember it just starting to snow, it had barely even settled on the ground yet & it already was causing long delays. Another time leaves on the tracks had caused delays. Toronto has its train delays, but I never herd of leaves being a problem & snow would generally only cause problems when a significant amount had settled on the ground, even then it might still just plow through. I know London does not have the snow removal equipment Toronto does, but surely a train can still operate with just a dusting of snow, 😁

    Just watched the clip, immensely enjoyed it. You have a nice voice, and a clear and excellent delivery. The North of England is very different, there are good and bad people in every part of the country, but according to what I've heard from Europeans, even they realize the significant difference. Apparently, people in the North are more people based, they're more likely to say 'hello' and call a person 'love' who they don't know. There's significant differences in wealth in the North of the country, as the government thinks that only 'London' matters - so starves most of the rest of the country of public funds. People in Sheffield and Liverpool will be able to tell you a lot about that, the name 'Thatcher' is virtually a swear-word.

    • @caiwatson1006
      @caiwatson1006 4 года назад +2

      That is very true, even the North East, Sunderland especially. Did you know that at one point, the city of Sunderland was the biggest shipbuilding city in the world but Margaret Thatcher shut down all of our coal mines, we had a quite a few, and shipyards. Sunderland had no money for 20 years, it was a horrible place, full of depression. But then the large Nissan factory came along, this is good but it also means that the entire city is basically completely reliant on this one factory and call centres, being in such an unstable time, with Brexit, who knows what will happen.

    • @trigjosh
      @trigjosh 4 года назад

      @@caiwatson1006 Hello Cai, yes I absolutely agree. I've only been to Sunderland once for a relatives wedding, we stayed in a beachfront hotel during the 80's I think. I went on the beach with my brother and sister while my parents got ready, I can remember it was completely desolate. I live in Sheffield, so I know all about the coal-mine closures, I remember when it happened - my grandfather was a coal-miner, my dad was an engineer in a steel company (and we know what's happened to that), and my mom was a nurse. So I full well know about the closures. I hate The Conservatives with a passion. Yorkshire was built on industry and coal-mining. The pits here were closed too, as they were all over the country, as The Conservatives looked for more cost-effective ways to fuel our country (which they still haven't solved). We are now pretty much reliant on importing fuel (particularly gas) from other country's. Electricity makes up some of our energy demands but not all of it. I hear you, about ship building too, another industry undermined by The Conservatives. Clearly, The Conservatives do not care about the financial, or social welfare, of the working class. I cannot understand how so many people in the north have voted for them in these last two elections, and have fallen for their bullshit. Do they not remember how The Conservatives have caused so much depravity in the north? All The Conservatives care about, is their own party members personal wealth, the financial buoyancy of their party, and looking after their public school boy mates with tax-break and protection from prosecution for their illegal enterprises, so that they can ensure continued financial contributions from them.

      @TheHappyGiant64 considering that there isn't too much of a debt crisis in London(in terms of paying rent on time). I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that Toronto is in a rougher position right now(according to the standards provided).

    "Evacuate yourself from this video!" Is this a euphemism? Best phrase I've heard in ages. Another great video, thanks again. I'm Scottish by birth and would often take offence at foreigners referring to the UK as England, however I've lived down in London (on the border of Kent) for longer than anywhere else now, and I suspect I'm much more English than Scottish. As for weather, well it's one of the things that keep me down here. It's so much milder down here than Aberdeenshire, where I'm from. My aunt lived in the Orkney Isles right at the north of Scotland and she used to wonder each year if there would be enough warm days to make it worth buying a new summer dress! That's chill!

      I totally get what you mean - I've loved my visits around York and up to Edinburgh (and the pictures of the peak/lake districts are incredible although haven't been there yet) but the weather down here is so much more pleasant.. I'm spoiled in Kent!

      @halcro, From my view stands short answer is no, it is not euphemism, your word. and I have question for you, by what words you have heard you think this is emphemism, to me is straight good. sorry I should learn how to use words by euphemism education. Just curious about diversity thought in big world, and none offensive.

      I disagree, I come from the Scottish borders and when I moved to England it felt so chilly (and a little joke frosty reception from locals too!) The North of Scotland is cold but the South is no worse than England especially factoring in all the floods that happen to places like Cumbria! But overall I think its more the South Of England gets more extremes like colder in winter and warmer in summer.

    I like both countries too, though haven't spent much time in Canada (so far!). Don't worry about the British/English distinction - some things will apply to Scotland as well, some won't: it isn't wrong to say you like something about England, even if that thing happens to apply to Scotland too. (The legal situation, by the way, is that you get "5.6 weeks" of holiday minimum each year, which is 28 days if you work a five day week - but not a lot of people know that, even after living here all their lives!)

      I would have to say Canada because of the massive open space that is affordable. I owned a large 4 bedroom house with 50 acres of land which is completely unattainable in England, also the wildlife. you just don't get Bears, Wolves, Coyotes, Raccoons etc. in your backyard here in England. People are also in general a lot more chill in Canada.

    On my first visit to Canada some 30 years ago, I got off the plane in Edmonton, Alberta and stepped into a minus twenty-eight winter that really took my breath away. A few days later, my teenage nephew wanted to take me to the city itself. That morning the temperature had dropped to minus thirty-nine! My second visit was in late summer and I borrowed my brother-in-law's pick-up truch and took my youngest nephew on a 1,500-mile trip to Calgary, up the Roclies to Banff, then down to Kelowna in BC, and ended that part of the trip in Washington. It was a beautiful time of the year, and we spent some time camping out near Kelowna, then at the Athabasca Glacier and at Lake Louise. It was a great journey, although I was twice stopped by the police for what they called "traffic violations." One was for using my indicators to pull out of one lane into another, but couldn't complete the manoeuvre because no-one would let me out!. The second time was for speeding at about 2mph above the limit. On both occasions the police said the same thing: "Oh, you're British", and issued no penalty.There was another occasion as I was climbing a very long and steep, curving road near Banff, and the truch started overheating. I had no option but to pull over and stop. There was something like a 1,000-foot drop on my right, and no barrier whatsoever, so I was about three feet away from the edge. Of course, Lady Luck brought a police car alongside, and a very curt and abript young officer told me I had to pull further over. I told him about the overheating engine, but he insisted. I told hime he had to be joking, and he replied that he'd be back in five minutes and I had better be gone. I was! I found there were really only two things I didn't like about Canada: one was that everything was so American - from Dollars to Diners - everything was just so American. The other thing was the winter. Beyond those, I loved the place and I enjoyed the countryside and the people. I had no problems with driving other than trying to figure out who had the right of way at road junctions. I've been back several times since then and had some really good times. My sister has lived there for more years than either of us care to tell, but she would rather be back here in the jolly old UK. We Brit's are a funny lot; while we hold onto our own particular nationality as Welsh, English, Scottish or Northern Irish, generally we see ourselves as part of the British people, we are as one family, and we see the Anzacs and Canucks as our extended family. Long may it continue!

      We do have a lot of American stores and such, but overall there are discernible differences. Our dollars are only similar in name. I'm in agreement with you on the weather. I live in Edmonton, and as I get older the winters are getting much harder to endure. The mild winters in the UK would be more to my liking. Victoria and Vancouver have mild winters, but I can't afford the real estate.

      @@sadee1287 Yes, my sister had a small ranch in Elk Island before moving to Edmonton itself. She now lives in "Moronville" (that's what I call it to wind her up)! Sadly, she's now going through serious health problems and I'm not able to get out to visit), but I have to say I didn't like Morinville at all, and I hate the weather! Most of her family live and have successful businesses in St Albert. My mother emigrated to Kelowna many years ago, and I found that a much better place than Edmonton. But as I said, I found the whole place far too American in every way.

    Thanks for this video! I live in Ontario and Im finding it harder and harder to live here. I love Ontario in many ways but I'm at my end with how expensive everything is and how long the commutes are. I have to travel almost 3.5 hours every day to get to work. I pay so much for my rent. Everyone seems depressed, all people care about is work. All people do is work. The buildings are culture-less and drab. They are very expensive - owning a house feels next to impossible and I make above min wage. Most people in the GTA are great, but I don't know what to do. I know I don't feel alone in this. Have you been to Vancouver? I'm originally from Portugal, lived in London and loved it at first....but after a few months I got cabin fever. The ammount of parks, didn't really give me that nature fix I really need. And to take a train to a location where you actually can get lost in nature and be outside of the urban atmosphere is very difficult and impractical.
    Would you say where you stayed in Canada this might not be a problem? I'm looking for a urban place to live with lots of modern offerings, but where I can be in nature as well, I heard Vancouver is cool for this; would love to hear your thoughts if you have any!
