You don't have to have lived in the UK for four years to have things that you miss about the country. I've spent only five weeks there, and I have my own list -- albeit smaller than yours. I will only list my #1 "miss": Talking with the British people -- on the pavement, in a restaurant, in a pub and, yes, even on the Tube (talking on the Tube? Horrors!). Because I was there alone, I made it a point to seek out conversations whenever possible. I've had so many great conversations with the Brits that I cherish to this day. Even Brexit discussions. No arguments, just exchanges of opinions. Very educational for me to hear these things from a British point of view as opposed to CNN or BBC. Even commuters on the Tube were engaging with me. Imagine that.
Agree on the pub garden...such a lovely experience on a warm summer's day with the smell of flowers, happy voices, and the smell of hops or cider. Very very convivial. I MISS IT TERRIBLY.
I live in the US now and I miss ALL these things too!! Top three for me is the humour, sarcasm and the way Brits converse with each other (it really is different to the USA) PUBS, everything about them including pub dogs(!) and pretty much the food that I cant get here. Love your videos as always Alanna ❤️
Oh my gosh , you nailed it sweetie. I am still here on lockdown and once the lockdown opens i am moving back to California and i am just gutted that i will not get to do all my last favourites. I fell in love with ENGLAND
I always imagined my retirement being the old bloke in the corner of the pub smoking his pipe, making his pint last a couple of hours and feeding crisps to his Jack Russell.

If British phrases and idioms are your thing I’d thoroughly recommend you get yourself a copy of Brewer’s Phrase and Fable. It’s quite hefty but it’s full of expressions and folklore behind a lot of the things we say.
For some reason, even though I'm in Britain right now, I also miss it. It's a sincere longing for the rolling hills, green pastures, a pint and a roast. Even though I had one on Sunday!
Loved this totally, as a Brit it’s encouraging.... But the biggest thing that made me grin, was Bob Mortimer. I’m SO glad you found him and appreciate him as we do. He’s a bloody institution !!!! Take care lovely.
Emigrated to Canada six years ago. This whole pandemic has made me incredibly homesick. And then I watch this video 😢 I really miss it. pleased that you were able to get back to the UK!
Through all this. I just realised you're not just a source of entertainment while I am bored. You're a person who possibly is struggling through this pandemic like the rest of us. Hope you stay safe and of course all your family and loved ones.
I came across this video on RUclips randomly and I'm glad I did! Your description of my country makes us British feel we takes things for granted and we do! They say that if you were born in the UK that is the lottery of life. We love Canada to. 🇬🇧🇨🇦 I hope you come back Alanna
What a fantastic young lady you are! You sell our historic villages and towns perfectly, thank you🙏 And I totally understand what you said about you appreciating sitting in the coffee shops, loving the views! That is something I enjoy doing, and can hand-on-heart, say that living here in beautiful North Yorkshire, is NOT taken for granted, even for a second! I genuinely list the things in my life I'm grateful for, and my home, village, county and country, are always included in my nightly thanks🙏 Newly subscribed, and looking forward to seeing more of your videos! Take care and look after yourself, Goodnight 🙏🙋🏻♂️🏴😴😴😴
Canadians have always felt like our closest cousins, our North American Colonies who managed not to commit treason with our oldest enemies. But then, that's because in my case they literally are. And next time someone comments, remind them (because it's the period in history where their minds are still stuck) it was the Canadian forces, not Dad's Army, who really first defended the South Coast in WW2 (from the very end of 1939!). They also protected the West Indies and Hong Kong for us. Canada trained most of our pilots, built our vehicles, supplied the rifles for the Home Guard, fed the home country and resupplied us after Dunkirk. They sacrificed themselves bravely at Dieppe to learn lessons for the later invasion (and we now know was partly to get an Enigma machine) and had to themselves one of the 5 beaches at D-Day. Along with India, but more directly in terms of the home islands, we owe a massive debt to Canada. Arguably greater than any other. You are the main reason Churchill was able to say we could fight on "alone" in 1940. Or you could just say, "you'd be speaking German if it wasn't for us", and unlike the USA, it would be true 😀
I'm a Brazilian living in London. Can't imagine living anywhere else in the world. ❤ I might have to move to the Netherlands....I'm already feeling heartbroken 💔
I'm English. Have lived in London and spent a considerable amount of time in the Netherlands. The latter is hands down better in terms of quality of life.
@@WhippetNoseI think that depends very much on where you live in the UK. Would you consider the Yorkshire Dales, the Cotswolds, the New Forest, Devon & Cornwall, Chester, York, Bath worse than living in the UK? Not to mention an evening in a pub with great friends, laughing until tears are running down you face.
Here in the USA, sales tax or value-added tax is almost never included in listed prices, just like in Canada. I agree with the UK way of having all taxes included in the listed price, and I think every country should do this!
@@joeceretti9098 1: Essentials, like food and children's clothes aren't taxed at all. (It gets weird sometimes. Cakes are apparently essential and not taxed. Cookies on the other hand aren't essential and are taxed.) 2: Most receipts here list how much tax you paid anyway, for anybody that cares... Realistically though, nobody really gives a shit about the tax enough to check. What matters is how much lighter one's wallet will be when exiting the store, why not be upfront honest about it right from the start.
@@joeceretti9098 in here everything is clear on the receipt - what's the brutto price, how high is the tax depending on the goods (food, cosmetics etc.) No-one is blaming store owners for taxes, no worries ;)
As a Brit in Canada I miss fish & chips, I've not found proper chips in 4 years. When I visit the UK my M&S shopping trips are epic, "yes, I really am buying all these Percy Pigs"!
I grew up in Christchurch Dorset UK and sometimes when we have some time off from work my son and I get chips from the chippy in the High Street and go up to the ruined castle on the hill and overlook Christchurch Priory while we enjoy them.
I have lived in some wonderful places around the World but always had England as home. I came back to live in London twenty years ago and I am here to stay.
Cornelius, If you don't like it here in the UK there are hundreds of other countries in the world you could sod off to but I guess you wouldn't get the same benefits and healthcare anywhere else. You sound like a right Mr Angry. Are you depressed with lockdown? This country is basically white and will stay that way in your and my lifetime. It will be centuries before humans are all the same mid brown colour. Get on with your life and stop moaning. You will be happier for it.

Once again, you show just how much we take for granted here in the UK. Keep reminding us of all the good, the stange, the downright weird things that go to make up our country. Take care and come back soon.
you'd love York, so historic and wonderful. the old city walls, York minster is stunning, so many great things to see, pubs hundreds of yrs old, great restaurants, we have a pub called the Roman bath, which has a section where you can see old roman remains through the glass sections in the floor. you'd love york
Yorkshire as a whole is beautiful! I’m a from Leeds but moved to London due to work when I was 19 it’s great having posh southern folk look down at me for being Northern then they realise that I’m their boss!
Your list is spot on! We were expats living in Surrey for 2 years. Garden pubs and historic sites....in your hometown or a short train ride away. Lovely memories! Also, can't forget those cheap flights😊
Many of my favourite days in a beer garden have come whilst drinking soft drinks. Beer gardens are about meeting friends to enjoy the sunshine far more than drinking.
The people in the UK are missing their fish & chips as well, two men were fined after riding their motorbikes 200 miles to Whitby to eat fish & chips (can't blame them, it's a great place for fish & chips). Another couple were fined for driving 135 miles to Whitby just to smell the sea air (Whitby again). Stay Safe.
Everywhere that I’ve visited, there have been things which are unique and wonderful. It’s so nice to hear you highlight some of the things which you loved about my home country. I’m sure that you are aware, though, that not every cafe faces a cathedral or castle. Many have a view of the local Poundland or sit opposite the multi-storey car park. Most places in the UK have fantastic old buildings which are worth a look. Not everywhere is as pretty as Canterbury. Come back soon.
If you ever find yourself in Devon visit Dartmouth, it’s a beautiful coastal town and particularly see the Cherub Inn. It was built in the 1300s and you can almost see people from that time running through the doors to tell everyone about the Spanish Armada or that there was this plot to blow up parliament 😀
I have a close castle view from my bedroom and orangery windows, the castle is Conisborough Castle in South Yorkshire, and was occupied by Ivanhoe at one time, it is mainly a ruin but the keep is still intact.
"We asked 61k people what they missed" They answered "Alaana!" However she is kind enough to remind us all how funny she is on a weekly basis on You Tube :)

Alanna, do you ever miss people in shops calling you love or darling, honey, sweetheart, my beauty (Norfolk), Bab, (Birmingham), Mi Duck (Nottingham), Hen (Scotland)? I miss it terribly whenever I leave the UK.
I'm from Canterbury, so many great pubs and places to eat and such a lovely City in the summer, especially by the river. Have lived in Lincoln for over 15 years, also similar just more rural. When you come back to England you'll learn a lot more phrases and slang, if you go up north!!! Same with west and east coast. We have so many dialects and accents, even us Brits find it hard to understand hahaha! Chin up lass, keep safe and healthy.
You just named 18 things we in the UK miss too. Get back here soon Alanna! Oh and the mushy peas issue disappears because you should have curry sauce instead... no peas! Thanks for a lovely vlog :D
Bless you love. I'm sure you were an absolute asset to the UK's place in this world and you would be welcome back, any time. Also with you on the M & S food thing. The quality and variety are hard to describe.
100% agree on historical buildings, sites and remains. It's not until you have friends over from some other countries that you appreciate these things you see every day. Edit: how did you mess up toad in the hole? It's sausages and batter!
Hope you get back soon - and when you do you should come to St.Albans ("Snorbins", it's pronounced here) where we have a cathedral containing building materials from each of the last 20 centuries, bits of Roman buildings, lots of pubs (used to be more per person than anywhere - not sure if it's still true), street markets, museums, and lots of stuff to explore. And eat and drink :-) I think you'll like it. (I've been to Toronto a couple of times - the drivers are *crazy* - even worse than in Manhatten!)
Hi Alanna...just an idea...why don't you sort out a PO Box number in Ontario and sit back while all your fans in Britain send you boxes of crisps, and cider, and cheese...not sure but I don't think the chish & fhips would travel well! Hurry up back here before it's changed beyond all recognition.
Yes, a TEMPORARY PO BOX would be ideal while she is still in Canada. Can imagine loads of containers of frozen fish and chips and other perishable care packages all packed in dry ice arriving at her local Post Office....
20:45 - And, get this, there used to be hugely *more* train lines and stations in the UK. Look up 'The Beeching Report' for details on why there are so many fewer now.
To be fair, most, if not all, of those lost train lines would have been there due to need in the 1800s, before the motorcar. Without easy access to personal transport there was much higher demand for the trains.
There was talk of bringing back many of the lines closed due to Beeching's report. I read it this year just before Corona. I cannot imagine it will now be given priority with economic crisis we and the rest of the world are now in.
I grew up playing around a castle in a village called Crickhowell. The kids play area is in the grounds and I remember that when you heard the song thrushes in the evening, you knew it was time to go home.
You are right, after speaking with many expats, Americans, Canadians, Australians and New Zealander’s, history and architecture are the main things they miss most.

And English people miss Alanna.
Ryan Frankland And a few Scotsmen too!
Yeah,she's lovely
Lol no we don't , soy boy .
"going to marks and spencers food hall to spend your rent money" ... i like your humour!
surely you have a direct debit to pay rent? I do.
So true! I'm English and I've never bought anything in Marks & Spencer's food hall
I got that sly little comment, had me laughing out loud.
Hurry on back sweetie. There will always be a place for you here.
This cutie loves England, she gets it.
My American husband loves England too, especially the beer gardens!🤦♀️🥰
Oh my gosh , you nailed it sweetie. I am still here on lockdown and once the lockdown opens i am moving back to California and i am just gutted that i will not get to do all my last favourites. I fell in love with ENGLAND
I remember when fish n' chips were sold wrapped in the previous day's newspaper.
Yeah, now nothing to read while you dine on fine chips....
When they started having colour newspapers they found that the ink was carcinogenic.
Canterbury cathedral is an amazing place, you can literally sense the history when you enter.
in 1961 ,here oooopp North ,they were 1 shilling one penny ,7d for fish 6p for chips .Photo to prove it ! (I....just thought I'd share that .....)
& didn't they taste delicious
Believe me, we all miss those things here in UK as well. 🇬🇧🥰
A beer garden will be one of my first destinations after this lock down ends!
@Mark Hepworth has to be done pal. This lovely weather makes me want to get there even more
You nailed it with 'Dogs in Pubs'. The world need dogs in pubs right now.
Woof!
A pub without a dog is not a real pub.
I always imagined my retirement being the old bloke in the corner of the pub smoking his pipe, making his pint last a couple of hours and feeding crisps to his Jack Russell.
After spending 4 years in America I flew back over the English West country and was reduced to tears at the sight of FIELDS!
A great list I think your soul is British now, time to change citizenship we’d love to have you ❤️
anyone can be english not just wihte ppl your racist. brittish is not etnicity and english is not etnicity either. i personly live in london and hate this contry but oh well.
Cornelius Ngagwayang U good bro? No one mentioned ethnicity. It’s not cool to bring racism into everything...
@@corneliusngagwayang9428 If you don't like England then you should leave.
@@corneliusngagwayang9428 Why bring race into this??? Who on earth as even saying anything about ethnicity???Also, if you hate this country, fuck off to another one.
Wow..what a great, pleasant girl doing a great vlog...then you get some halfwit crying about the brits because they wish they were a brit...
Lol ok cringe whiteboi 🤦🏿♂️
What you have is commonly known as homesickness hope you get back to your adopted country soon
Yes hurry back you crazy Canadian, we miss you.
This made my heart melt...you are one of us now xx
Loved this totally, as a Brit it’s encouraging....
But the biggest thing that made me grin, was Bob Mortimer.
I’m SO glad you found him and appreciate him as we do.
He’s a bloody institution !!!!
Take care lovely.
Emigrated to Canada six years ago. This whole pandemic has made me incredibly homesick. And then I watch this video 😢 I really miss it. pleased that you were able to get back to the UK!
i cried a little when you were talking about pub gardens....especially as summer is nearly here
Through all this.
I hope you come back Alanna
I am back! But thank you for watching!!
@@AdventuresAndNaps That's great - the pub dogs and I have missed you !
What a fantastic young lady you are! You sell our historic villages and towns perfectly, thank you🙏
And I totally understand what you said about you appreciating sitting in the coffee shops, loving the views! That is something I enjoy doing, and can hand-on-heart, say that living here in beautiful North Yorkshire, is NOT taken for granted, even for a second! I genuinely list the things in my life I'm grateful for, and my home, village, county and country, are always included in my nightly thanks🙏
Newly subscribed, and looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
Take care and look after yourself,
Goodnight 🙏🙋🏻♂️🏴😴😴😴
Hope you come back soon as you're a lovely person a great credit to Canada.
She always makes me laugh, even though she doesn't intend to. God bless you Alana!
Your not a foreigner, your a Canadian, your family and we love Canadians. Always welcome - come back soon.😁
Thanks! 😃
Hope CANZUK happens and makes easier for movement between our country's, I would love to visit Canada and Australia.
Yeah. Don’t understand this foreigner thing. Canucks are Commonwealth, our friends. 🏴🏴🏴🇨🇦
"You're"
I'm a Brazilian living in London. Can't imagine living anywhere else in the world. ❤ I might have to move to the Netherlands....I'm already feeling heartbroken 💔
Don’t go ! 👍
I'm English. Have lived in London and spent a considerable amount of time in the Netherlands. The latter is hands down better in terms of quality of life.
Don't get on a Tube when Cressida Dick's on the prowl.
Fish ‘n Chips were ‘invented’ in the UK, which is why you can get them pretty much everywhere.
The pub garden and a pint of cider. Pure heaven. 😁
pub gardens are closed still but I just spent time in the sun in my back garden with a glass of wine here on the sunny Kent coast.
Close enough!!
Here in the USA, sales tax or value-added tax is almost never included in listed prices, just like in Canada. I agree with the UK way of having all taxes included in the listed price, and I think every country should do this!
I believe in Europe it's a standard ;)
It is a good standard because it makes sense and it is friendly to consumers :)
Its kind of like the USA going "metric. A great idea in theory but do not hold your breath...its not likely to happen any time soon....
Percy Pig ice cream is available too!
there is a giant percy pig for easter
For me, it would be the raspberry Jaffa cakes and the crunchy peanut butter!
You mention Canterbury, ugh the fish and chip shop opposite HMV just off the main street. So good!!
I grew up in Christchurch Dorset UK and sometimes when we have some time off from work my son and I get chips from the chippy in the High Street and go up to the ruined castle on the hill and overlook Christchurch Priory while we enjoy them.
I love my country, I could never leave as it’s got so much to appreciate. The UK is wonderful.
I have lived in some wonderful places around the World but always had England as home. I came back to live in London twenty years ago and I am here to stay.
its not your contrey it dosent belong to wihte english ppl anymore ffs uk belogns to the world and belong to africa in future 😏👌🏿
@@corneliusngagwayang9428 worst trolling ever lol
Cornelius, If you don't like it here in the UK there are hundreds of other countries in the world you could sod off to but I guess you wouldn't get the same benefits and healthcare anywhere else. You sound like a right Mr Angry. Are you depressed with lockdown? This country is basically white and will stay that way in your and my lifetime. It will be centuries before humans are all the same mid brown colour. Get on with your life and stop moaning. You will be happier for it.
@@sandrab9088 telling people to leave just because they have an negative opinion on something shows exactly why most of the world thinks the English are backward, elitist, spoilt fools.
Once again, you show just how much we take for granted here in the UK. Keep reminding us of all the good, the stange, the downright weird things that go to make up our country. Take care and come back soon.
you'd love York, so historic and wonderful. the old city walls, York minster is stunning, so many great things to see, pubs hundreds of yrs old, great restaurants,
we have a pub called the Roman bath, which has a section where you can see old roman remains through the glass sections in the floor. you'd love york
Yorkshire as a whole is beautiful! I’m a from Leeds but moved to London due to work when I was 19 it’s great having posh southern folk look down at me for being Northern then they realise that I’m their boss!
Sounds like my kind of bag, would love to go there when I can.
I love your enthusiasm for our country! Yes we do take it for granted. x
Your list is spot on! We were expats living in Surrey for 2 years. Garden pubs and historic sites....in your hometown or a short train ride away. Lovely memories! Also, can't forget those cheap flights😊
I love it that you're a fan of Bob Mortimer! 😄 He's such an odd ball, but a true national treasure!
His appearance on Taskmaster was just the BEST. 😊
Gosh, Bob Mortimer is quickly becoming a global phenomenon. No surprise, he's utterly unique and hilarious. Take care and stay safe.
Alot of things on this list, because of the current situation, were missing them with ya!
Many of my favourite days in a beer garden have come whilst drinking soft drinks. Beer gardens are about meeting friends to enjoy the sunshine far more than drinking.
I remember on my way back from Amsterdam being really chuffed that we landed (in UK time) before we took off (in Dutch time)
The people in the UK are missing their fish & chips as well, two men were fined after riding their motorbikes 200 miles to Whitby to eat fish & chips (can't blame them, it's a great place for fish & chips). Another couple were fined for driving 135 miles to Whitby just to smell the sea air (Whitby again).
Stay Safe.
They wuz lookin fer Whitby Wyrm
Dracula is in trouble, then!
Luckily here in Twickenham the local Fishy is still open, and guess what was for dinner tonight...... 🤗
All my local fish and chip shops havent closed been open since lockdown just 2 in at a time and 45-60min delivery time😂
That's one expensive bag of fish and chips 😲crazy, glad I'm near the coast 😁.
You sound home sick and really missing England. We want you back here :( xx
england is racist wihte contry exept my native london
Hey Alanna, hope you’re doing well today. Thanks for continuing to provide me with great videos every week 😊
You are so welcome!
It’s very appreciated
Everywhere that I’ve visited, there have been things which are unique and wonderful. It’s so nice to hear you highlight some of the things which you loved about my home country.
I’m sure that you are aware, though, that not every cafe faces a cathedral or castle. Many have a view of the local Poundland or sit opposite the multi-storey car park. Most places in the UK have fantastic old buildings which are worth a look. Not everywhere is as pretty as Canterbury.
Come back soon.
Hey, as an Englishman I found your video so touching & lovely, glad you like so much about my country x
Thank you! 😃
You love Bob Mortimer too? He is a national treasure.
National treasure .. maybe in your eyes
One of the few comedians still worth watching.
@@colinmayes5892 i suppose you prefer Sarah Millican.
Max West Who is she ??
Oh trust me, those of us that are still in England miss pub gardens...
This actually brought a tear to my eye 4:21 😢
If you ever find yourself in Devon visit Dartmouth, it’s a beautiful coastal town and particularly see the Cherub Inn. It was built in the 1300s and you can almost see people from that time running through the doors to tell everyone about the Spanish Armada or that there was this plot to blow up parliament 😀
I have a close castle view from my bedroom and orangery windows, the castle is Conisborough Castle in South Yorkshire, and was occupied by Ivanhoe at one time, it is mainly a ruin but the keep is still intact.
I was in Nova Scotia for 5 months a few years ago, one thing I missed about the UK was hedges. Odd I know but there weren't any hedges in the fields.
Benson and hedges lol
facetube youbook No
😂 👍🏻 Never though I'd hear anyone say this statement
What about dry stone walls?
Chris De Christophe they got them but called slaves walls
"We asked 61k people what they missed"
They answered "Alaana!"
However she is kind enough to remind us all how funny she is on a weekly basis on You Tube :)
You're too kind!!
Oh my goodness, you really are a Brit now, your parents must be thinking "who is this girl living in the spare room?" 14:25 thought you were going to cry there, dont ever change 😊.
Thanks for saying such lovely things about England and yes you’re right we do tend to take all our old stuff and history for granted and it is so nice hearing you remind us and please hurry home to England we miss your funny videos bab stay safe bye bab 😀
So true.
A Brummie I take it?
As a Brit watching . this makes you think of all the stuff we take for granted! . Made me smile this vlog so bless you and take care .👍👊
"I miss the little place that I made for myself". This gave me the feels. Hope you get back soon.
Thank you!
Marmite would travel well. Pity Alanna hates the stuff.
Yes, Alanna, do it!! You would be so cheered up by it all (and fat, probably, but that's another issue!)
I’d donate junk food to that cause....
I'd definitely send you some Flumps, Alanna!
You said 'cider' like a native! (ie from Somerset) - congratulations! :D
Coider (soy-daaar)
I deliver to Bridgwater twoice a week
I miss Jaffa Cakes when I'm in Canada the same way that I miss Root Beer when I'm in Engand
