Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a RUclips video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

I lost my wife of 43 years to cancer three years ago. I am sixty nine now and basically have been marking time until I can go and join my wife. Your video touched a chord within me, you are so right, life is what you make it. I have been inspired by what you have said and have decided its time to start living again. I will never forget my wonderful wife, I know that she would not like me sitting around waiting to die, so, for whatever time I have left, I am going to embrace life. Thankyou so much for your emotional and touching video. You have touched my life, so thankyou very very much.
robert white I met my third wife when I was 69. My life changed for the better and we have a great life. I’m now 84 and planning for the future.

I really Don't know why the Canadian High Commission in London hasn't recruited you as a Goodwill Ambassador for Canada. Your videos, even those that don't interest me, are some of the best that RUclips has to offer. Don't worry about crying. Seeing real emotion nowadays is a rare thing. Great to have you in Great Britain now and, hopefully, always.

having only recently discovered your channel i have to say ive found it one of the most interesting and enjoyable on here. Your honesty and true personality shines through and its addictive listening to and watching you . It feels like ive known you for ages its all so comfortable and heart warming. There's nothing wrong with crying infront of friends.. and thanks I needed this video.. just started a new job 2 days ago and was regretting leaving my old job and friends for this new one which felt very overwhelming and different at times but we have to persevere.. so thanks again and keep smiling!

The hug thing was something that crossed my mind too due to the vulnerability during this video, so I'm glad to see you say as much because it's a shame that it will be perceived in the wrong way when coming from a bloke.

@@AthAthanasius I think the perception that a man wanting to empathise with a woman these days can be misconstrued. It seems to be a fine line these days. It could easily be taken as harrassment or worse, even though it is a genuine moment of solidarity.

You are such an honest, refreshing and raw individual. I definitely think it’s a part of growing up, not just moving away. As you said, you’ve changed in the years you’ve been here so you see ‘home’ and the people there differently. There’s an element of sadness in growing up for all of us, leaving school, the friends, your hometown but look at what you have achieved by taking a step that some people only dream about. You should be insanely proud of yourself! So glad I stumbled upon your videos! Wishing you all the happiness and success you deserve.

Lovely video. I emigrated to the UK 30 plus years ago and have loved it. Eventually, you will find that your "original" home becomes more alien to you - so going "home" on visits becomes more and more alien. I'm from Ireland and the Ireland of 2018 is a very different place to the one I left in 1986. I bet you will find that Ontario in years to come will become a very different Ontario to the one you left behind.
@@larrybxl5406 Conversely, I actually think Ireland is a much better place than it was in 1986 - and possibly the UK isn't. But I've made my life here and all my friends and family are here - so I have no regrets. If I was in my my 20s and living in Ireland today and I don't think emigration would be on my list of things to do.
I can relate to this concept, My Dutch (now deceased) wife moved to the UK immediately back in '74 & although we would return to Holland 2/3 times a year for vacation & family / friends visits, she never wanted to "go back" permanently.
She felt that after a few years England was where she had made a new home, was less "busy" than than her home country, & a nicer place to live.
You don't even have to move that far to feel that way. I moved to Cardiff (Wales) from my home town of Barry (only 15 miles away) and moving back after ten years I felt like an outsider.

When I lived in the UK for a few years after moving from Australia, I was amazed at the strange little things British people seem to know about Oz. Like they all knew this old kid's show called 'Round the Twist' that every kid in Australia grew up on. I was like "how in the actual hell do you know about that?!" - also the marmite/vegemite rivalry is fierce. The Brits are so proud of their products and so are the Aussies, when they're essentially the same thing. My favourite thing about the UK was getting trains around the country though. The stations are all so impressive and watching the beautiful countryside rush by is like heaven to an Aussie.

Yeah they showed Round the Twist here in the 90s, just like Neighbours and Home & Away...it's not that weird is it?

That was such a popular show in the UK. A lot of Aussie shows are.
I love Aussie and Kiwi films especially the horror ones. They haven't sold out to the murican market like British films have and are so antipodean which gives them a uniqueness needed to give us a change from the samey US\UK tripe.
@@Gambit771 You should check out a band called DMA's if you want to see how strong British culture is in Australia. People replicate it to be cool. I really can't think of another country that has such an insatiable appetite for everything British, maybe Ireland?

Not only I am learning English "with a Canadian touch" with your videos, but now in some way, you have started to be "a part" of my life, during the minutes that each video lasts. I guess it is weird to feel something like this towards someone that I don't really know in person, and that also doesn't even speak my language (I'm the one who is learning yours). I just love your videos. Maybe I'm your Spanish fan 'número 1'!! Thanks for being there Alanna.
Sometimes the internet is a bad thing, stirs up hatred and makes people cross. Then there are channels like yours, that show that we're all in this together and life and the world can be wonderful. We are all glad you are here - keep doing your thing! PS, you were 20 miles away from us when you were at Stonehenge - you should have dropped in for tea and a bun!

Alanna, that was quite a contrast to the pudding tasting session. Something I've found on my travels is that regardless of the regime, type of government etc people are pretty much the same; they want to earn money to pay the bills, put food on the table, clothe the kids and have a good time. One big advantage of social media is the ability to stay in contact despite the vast distances between loved ones; some of my family who emigrated to the USA in the 1860s never had that and never saw the native contingent ever again. A couple of things; 1. I didn't see Norwich in your montage. You must visit. 2. Don't worry about getting emotional on camera, you've got 23,000 subscribers happy to buy you a drink- that would be one hell of a night.
What I've always loved about you is your honesty. I can totally understand what you're saying about "you can't go home again" - it's just not the same because we've changed. Great video sweetie!

Kind of on topic. My Dad used to be in a famous band and he pushed me into being a drummer. I was taught by a famous drummer myself (at expense) but my heart wasn't in it. I'm not even beginning to, nor will name drop. I just appreciate your comments. Sometimes you just don't feel ready. Am I a good drummer? The guy who taught me, said I was was better than he ever was. The point is. You do and go with what your heart feels and I for one, am glad you came here and that video really hit me hard as I have been through a few similar experiences. This is the best type of Internet content. You are not telling others what will or won't work or what to do but rather saying how it is from your perspective. I am a 46 year old man and your video has resonated so much with me. For you can never go home you could just as equally state you can never relive the past and letting it go is the only way to be in the present and look forward. If you ever come to Wales I'd love to buy you a pint

Thanks for bringing some sunshine into sometimes dreary days :) The saying "Home is where the heart is" is true and going "Home" after living away can be both comforting and unsettling. Everyone there has moved on with their lives and you remember it as a fixed point of time (or at least it was like that for me :) ).
After watching this I've made my mind up and I will sign up to the Navy. So glad I found your channel last year, whatever you talk about seems to always make sense so don't worry about it. Thanks!

Congrats on being in the UK for three years! We are lucky to have you here. I understand how you got emotional talking about going home. My husband is Italian and has lived in the UK 15 years next month. Very little has changed where he comes from, but he has changed just as you have. It's ok to get emotional, it's a huge step to move to another country and start afresh. I admire you for making that change. You have a great outlook on life and it's good to be thankful for everything that you have in your life. Hope you have a great week. Take care.
Hi Alana, wanted to just say how much it has been a pleasure watching your videos. It takes a lot I should imagine moving to another country and then living through what must have been truly anxious times for those first six months. Don't feel embarrassed about crying on camera everyone gets upset in life over something or the other. It's good to know your living over here. Best of luck for the future!

Hi Alanna, thanks for yet another awesome video. Well done living in England for three years. I was born in Sydney NSW and moved here to Melbourne in 1981. Despite being born in Sydney, I have now lived in Melbourne longer. It is hard to believe. Moving to any new place takes a lot to become used to and it can be hard getting past all the differences. Honestly, Sydney and Melbourne are like two different worlds and it felt like living in another country after moving here. You are giving excellent advice and I can definitely identify with what you are saying. I have only lived in two homes. The home I have now and the home in Sydney, which was originally my parents place. I lost my mum at 9 years old and my dad passed away when I was 25. I am also an only child and from the time my dad passed away everything changed. For a while, I thought my world had completely ended, but I refused to give up. I am now married with two grown up children and life is great. Incidentally, I love your office. I have a chair similar to your chair here, though I am still working at it making those cool sounds that yours does. LOL. I just want to say, you seem like a truly lovely person and I really enjoy watching all your videos. You are really making a difference in our lives. I feel very privileged to know you. Awww you're such a sweetie. Canada's loss is our gain. I left 'home' at a young age (16) and have since worked throughout the world, during which time I formed lasting relationships with many people from many countries. With the exception of two good friends - whom even now I'd love to recontact - I've been lucky enough to hold on to every single one of my friends and family from throughout my entire life, including my school days (I am now nearing retirement age). Home is where the heart is, as they say. For me, home is in plenty of places and times across the planet. My Great Grandfather had two sons. One left England to move to Brantford Ontario and the other (my Grandfather) remained here in England. So we have two large branches to our family tree, but 4 generations later we are connected by social networking. My lifelong connections, friends and relatives, facetime me from the different places where they are living around the world. I feel as if I am still connected each day with much of my life and I love it. I wonder if 'home' is simply a geographical place or is it much more complicated than that? I'm not sure if that question is important actually. Only academically. What I do know, is that our riches are in our relationships and I would recommend that you never lose even a single one of them if you can help it.
As an Englishman, your inclusion makes this country better. You rock!
Side note, I get the whole 'feeling weird' about something that gradually starts to become normal and then enjoyable. I might not be moving but I'm writing a novel, and recently it started to become great fun! Your videos, your humour, definitely contributes to keeping me and others super grounded, so thank you for that!

What a lovely moving video milestone. I’ve watched you over the last three years while going through my own quite different life changing time and I have to admit you got me in tears too. It’s doubly moving as my own kids are approaching the age where they will go off on their own life adventures. I already barely see them so it’s bitter sweet but I hope they have as many fantastic adventures (and naps) as you. Thankyou so much for the videos up to now and keep them coming xx.

I loved this video more than anything. I feel you on the whole “home” thing. I was born and raised in England but moved to America when I was 15. I’ve been here for 14 years and even though it feels like home, England will always be home. I haven’t been able to leave the US the entire time I have been here, due to some complications. But I’m finally moving back to England in January! It’s going to be a very weird experience. Because I’ve changed so much and things have changed but also stayed the same. Your videos are great! They’ve really made me feel better about moving back to the UK and trying to get acclimated and whatnot. You’re an inspiring person. And I’m really glad you’re enjoying living in Kent. ☺️

I've decided that I know why I like your channel Alana. It's a conversation. So many channels are so opinionated and preach at you. Your's is a conversation which I want to jump into all the time. It's an absolute delight. My home hasn't been home for over 40 years and although it is still in the family, my niece lives in it now, she has remodelled it so much that it is no longer the house I was brought up in either. I moved from Aberdeen to Glasgow and that became home for 10 years, and then I moved to London with my wife and this has been home for 35 years. I don't consider anywhere else home now. But I totally understand the tears. Just sometimes that feeling of longing or loss of something of your childhood creeps up on you and takes you by surprise. Another fantastic video. Thanks .
All that you've said in this vlog tells me that you are an intelligent open minded girl growing up fast. Your maturity is impressive and I only wish that many more people could be like you in the way that you relish new experiences rather than whingeing about them as so many sadly do. You're a much braver person than I, Alanna. To uproot your whole life to a foreign country so young must be so tough on all levels. So grateful for your honesty! It seems you're making a good go of it and doing real well. Longest I've ever stayed away from home is a month - in Australia for work. Homesickness was suffocating, a lot of it had to do with being so far from family. A month, of course, is a drop in the ocean, but it's all relative. I think i will live abroad in later life, or at least 6 months here and 6 months away. Glad you love England, Kent is a lovely place. I do wonder if you'll ever try London?

I understand what you are saying i felt the same way when i left the family home, its not on the scale that you did but i think the feeling is very similar. The way i view your home part is Canada is not your home anymore England is, Canada is your roots and i think that is on some level why you got the feels during this video. We all have an innate desire for security; and the concept of "home" is part and parcel of feeling secure. Realising that "home" is lost, not just temporarily, but forever, is like hearing about a close relative's death. You need to grieve the same way, because you realise that life will never be the same again. An era is over, together with its emotional securities. "Home" is like a secure base for a small child, usually a parent to return to the child can rely on to get comfort whenever he or she is in need. When you lose "home", you lose your secure base, you are emotionally homeless. So it is no surprise that you cry on this video due to the recognition of that loss. I admire you for allowing yourself to be emotional in public. Being honest about one's emotions is a strength, not a weakness. Best wishes, Peter
Goodness gracious! You had me filling up with tears. Been there regards adapting. I totally get the 'home' analogy. I consider my hometown somewhere I only lived for a very brief part of my life. Totally get the emotion.
I have no idea how I found your channel, but I'm glad I did. You have a real knack for making things relatable, even for folks like me, and you are just ridiculously likable. I'm glad you stuck with it and you've become accustomed to your space -- and that you're sharing your experiences (I'm sure others will find this channel and be helped by it). When I was younger, a bit younger than you but not by much, I spent an extended period of time in another country speaking another language. I did find that, after a while, the environment became natural and the constant tension of confronting the "other" dissipated; life became so much more enjoyable when I could just do my thing without constantly confronting differences. This culture shock is not fun, but when you recognize it, it's endurable and it wanes with time. Watch out for rebound culture shock. It can come out of the blue and you may not know what is happening at first. I got hit worst when going home, of all things. Anyway, love your channel and always watch when a new video comes out.
