Bert Newton is a national treasure. One of icons on TV through the ages. He appeared on TV screens in the 60's. Now in his 80's and experiencing health problems. A multi gold logie award winner.
Kylie was only about 18 here. Locomotion was her 1st hit in 88 or 89. She hit the screens in Neighbors a year or so earlier as Charlene in 87 at 17.
Susan Renouf was a famous socialite with a famous history. (What socialite doesn't have that!).
Hazel Hawke was married to famous PM Bob Hawke famous for saying Any employer who sacks an employee today,is a bum in 1983 when Australia won the America's Cup. Bob was a ACTU (Union) leader in the 70's and 80's and won the 83 election. Great drinker and lived a good life until his death in his 80's a few years ago. His partnership with Treasurer Paul Keating (who later became PM on challenge in 1992) was famous and ground breaking for Labor leadership and progression in Australian's working lives. Introducing Superannuation in 92 and that has been a saviour for workers retirement lump sums. It's now 10% of wages compulsory contribution which can't be accessed until 60. Deregulation of the $A in 83 move in international trade also was significant.
Forget who the little girl was.
Max Walker (with the mou) was a famous 70's cricketer. One of the legends of the era when there were great personalities. Think Shane Warne x 10 without the ego. He was a great character (nickname Tangles due to his unorthodox bowling action) who sadly died at only 68 from cancer about 5 years ago. Wrote over a dozen children's books which he would flog at every opportunity. He was universally loved.
Daryl Somers who he interviewed as he just got of his car was a multi Gold Award winner as well. Host of a show called Hey Hey it's Saturday which started out 71 as a morning childrens show which then progressed to a prime time 6.30 Saturday night show with entertainers, a band, comedians,Red Faces (Google) and the famous dicky knee. Virtually an inverted talking mop!
Derryn Hinch was a famous host of a show that followed the news and Australia's most wanted. Always controversial. Had no qualms about naming those in court and eventually spending some time in the clink. His wife was Jacky Weaver a well liked actress at the time.

Some context of who he's talking to and about. Derryn Hinch a host of his own current affair program I believe illegally named someone in a court case and as a protest went to jail instead of paying a fine, That's why Norman said he was the host of Australia's most wanted. Darryl Sommers won 14 logies hence why he found the magazine under the lino/floor covering years old and no writers cramp filling in the coupons, the awards winners are based on the number of magazine coupon votes a person got. More names above the title than Susan Renouf. She was a socialite who was thrice married all to rich and influential men. He was very very talented and cutting edge considering the time period he performed. He also played a more serious comedy role in Mother and Son being the son who cared for his elderly mother, Sadly and ironically like a number of comedians he suffered from depression and anxiety.

Kylie went to London after her 'Neighbours' role finished, as did a lot of the cast members as it was so adored over there. She was far more popular there than here. Not that she wasn't liked here, but you guys made her a superstar. I've noticed many Brits like to make that very clear to us too, very possessive of Kylie, and fair play.

As everyone has said below, if you haven't already check out Gary MacDonalds other series called Mother & Son.
I possibly suggest explicitly the full length episode which is known by all as "The Funeral".
Gary plays the son of Ruth Cracknell's character Maggie.
Be prepared to laugh, and just remember that aussie humour is very dark at times and is a coping mechanism for nearly everyone in positions just like that. Not everyone agree's with our humour but to us all it is just a simple step in life.
I always likened it to the humour of Michael Crawford's character Frank Spencer in Some Mothers Do A've Em.

When you said the aggro thing, I thought you were meaning Agro the puppet on the kids show. Agro is another Aussie icon. A must watch also. Have you watched The Aunty Jack Show? Gary is in that also but not as Norman. Norman interviews Cheech and Chong was classic too!

Rob, it's time for you to watch "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie ". A 1975. Movie which came out around the Aunty Jack/ Norman Gunston era. It is the most politically incorrect thing you will ever see and has just about every Australian saying up to that point in history.

Norman was such an odd character. If you look up "The Aunty Jack Show" you can see him in black and white on early 70's Aussie TV. You also get Grahame Bond as the eponymous Aunty Jack. Another very odd character. "I'll RIP YER BLOOD ARMS ORF". And the hard time he gave old Max "Tangles" Walker (you might be too young to remember him sending all those pace balls at your English test teams). Tangles was a lovely bloke, but Norman gave no one any quarter. Have you seen what he did to the band KISS?
