this disconnection with food is actually called arfid (avoidant restrictive food intake disorder). there’s a lack of interest towards food and what others consider “picky eating”. as someone who struggles with arfid, it is so reassuring to hear a public figure be open about their relationship with food.

Me too. Plus poverty. My folks sometimes just explained it that once a month is “‘government cheese day” and hopefully a paycheck day (we lived in very remote and economically absent areas a lot), otherwise beans and rice and the garden or what we could gather in the hills or fish for was good. Or, well “we fast on weekends “, or whenever. My husband and his brother couldn’t fathom why i got wrecked emotionally when just as the pandemic quarantine was beginning, they took half our pantry and aimed to throw it out because some of it (even when perfectly fine and stable) was approaching the best by date! One doesn’t have to wonder far why i developed a lifelong anxiety based eating disorder. Still, i find it cruel to be so wealthy and deny your children the stability of food.

One year I had chronic pain plus was depressed and anxious because of the pain and thinking I may never get better. It was actually difficult for me to eat that year and I lost 10 lbs. And usually, all I think about is food and what I'm going to have for my next meal (mostly plant based; eating animals is yuck!)

It's kind of sad that while growing up his mother kept her refrigerator as if she was a bachelor. They could have afforded a cook. There are wealthy successful people who do cook at times but I guess Gloria was busy with her empire and galavanting around town at night. Nothing is perfect but the way you're raised when small can have a huge impact on one's life.

@@melissanunez1155 Melissa, I am so happy to get a response! I know ALL about diabetes as I live with the type 2 diabetes which makes my 67 yo husband's life a misery. I've spent 45 years telling him what he should not eat, now he's got a weight problem and I'm on the slim side of average. My sugar levels are totally normal. The pangs I describe are totally hunger gripes, which I think a human foraging and eating infrequently would learn to live with. I figure I'm way past growing, I only have to maintain, and about 1 1/2 cups of nuts does it for me, with lots of fluid. Hope you and yours are surviving the current world in health and happiness.
