      As someone who has made pickles & jam, and canned both successfully, I always packed my jars while the contents were hot and that was enough to actually seal the jars. I'd run all the jars through the heat sanitize cycle on my dishwasher before filling them, then just hot packed and waited to hear all those lids pop as they sealed (very satisfying sound) and I never gave myself or any of my friends and family botulism.

    The biggest thing that bothers me with these "small business owners" is that they are selling food products online. It's one thing to sell handmade jewelry, clothes, plushies etc. But when it comes down to things we CONSUME, it just makes me feel so incredibly uncomfortable to buy these products without doing hella research. In so many ways, the current era of influencers and viewers tend to be impulsive and careless and this just triggers so many red flags tbh. Thanks to Markie for always pointing out the BS for us tho 🙏

    Cottage law aside, I’m baffled that she never did proper sealing of the jars. I remember making jams/jellies with my mom in our kitchen (just for my family-never sold them) and using boiling water to seal the mason jars. As a child I knew the importance of their step. So if a child can understand about proper jar sealing; an adult running a business definitely should. It’s just negligence on her part for that and obviously not looking up how to safely make her product or proper laws for running a food business.

    There are different methods of pickling. One way (the easy way) is to use salt and vinegar which is low risk because the vinegar has sterilizing properties. Most store bought pickles are made with vinegar.
    The other method is fermentation which relies on bacteria to pickle the vegetables. If done wrong, it can make one sick, which is why you rarely find fermented pickles in the market.
    As a pickle enthusiast myself, i recommend people to make fermented pickles at home and not buy it. It's not that hard to do and you can pickle pretty much everything.

  • @chickenlittle5095
    @chickenlittle5095 2 года назад +122

    If you want pickles, make them yourself! It has to be one of the easiest things to prepare. You don’t even need to ‘cook’ anything tbh. You need to ‘heat’ the pickling brine but that it about it. Now proper canning for long safe keeping/ no fridge required, that is a bit different.

    I remember my mom using boiling water to seal the jars everytime she did jams and pickles and stuff for the winter, like that's such an easy and important step to do idk why she didn't just do, it or at least she could have researched the process better before she went to sell them

    However, I do not mind watching or listening to animals eat or crunch their food! Especially those big tortoises when they eat cactus leaves and cats eating their kibble!

    We handseal pickles for personal use and none leak, the lid naturally vacuum seals after the jar cools off and it doesn't leak. The lid leaking and not doing the fssst sound when open is a BIG no-no, so we throw them away.

    So many Americans can't use their cutlery in the correct order or position. They also tend to chew with their mouths open or speak with food in their mouths. It's so off-putting. I heard from a Buckhingham Palace Butler that there have been times when the late Queen and family members were forced to ignore some really sketchy table manners. Yeach!

      If I were invited to Buckingham for a meal, I would be studying up on manners 😂 I am not great at home with them but to go visit the queen in her ‘home’ and having more than a knife/fork/spoon, I would have no idea!

    Pickles that are bought in store are air sealed but once you open them you need to consume them quickly, so my question is: how long did it take in between her putting the pickle in the bottles to when it arrives? Because they propably weren't sent in proper package so these are true health hazard

    I’m not sure how it works in California, but in Colorado you can go onto Colorado Secretary of State and view wether or not someone’s business is actually registered with the state. I think you can also look up their licensing but I’ve never done it.

    Isn't illegal to lie that you have a license to sell food products when you don't have the license? I think pickleme deserves some time in prison if it's illegal or anything else she has done when selling pickles.

    I'm from a place where pickles are being home-made every season. So:
    WTF do you mean "hand sealed"? That's not how it works. They NEED pressure to stay edible for a long time which is, you know, the entire point of pickling/preserving? If the container is not sealed properly it will not pickle properly and will probably mold before the whole process is completed. Unless you keep it in the fridge, in which case - WTF are you doing? Stop.

    There was a short story about this. Well, not this exactly, but it was about a dude who time travelled to today and wound up selling artisanal pickles to hippies while living in a hipster art space, and he wound up getting busted by something like the FDA for not following proper food safety rules. Does anyone know the book I’m on about? It was super depressing lol
