    We always cut around the stem and then put it back as the lid, minus a small triangle for airflow so the candle would stay lit. The trick is to cut at an angle so the bottom of the hole is narrower than the top, or the top of the lid is wider than the bottom. That's what keeps it from just falling into the pumpkin

  • @BirdBean_
    @BirdBean_ Год назад +5

    You can also keep the stem intact and cut in the top, just make sure you make the cut around the stem at a slant so the little lid you've made has a ledge to sit on. It's also helpful to have a little notch to act as a key. So the lid always goes on the same way and lines up with the rest of the pumpkin.

Though now that I think about it it’s kind of just common sense. We did actually use my pottery tools though, so at least we have 9 braincells 1 to drive to get the pumpkins, 1 to get the money to buy/grow the pumpkins, 1 to drive back with the pumpkins, 1 to get the right tools, 1 to trace instead of winging it, 1 to use knife’s without cutting ourselves, 1 to light a candle without catching on fire, 1 to put it on the porch with nothing flammable around, under, or on it, and 1 to figure out how many brain cells we actually have (9). I've always done my lanterns with a real candle. No hole in the cop = burnt pumpkin. On top of that, a base that's been compromised = a flat rotten pumpkin much quicker than if you just stopped trying to find cute ways of altering what just works to begin with. There's no reason to not cut the top because when you cut the top, the top fits back on top and looks just fine stem and all.

    This carving method is the best! It has saved me a lot of time and stress. Now that I have a grandson, who will be 17 months old, I’m excited to drag out the old pumpkin carving tools!
    Still debatable, yet interesting, is worming animals (such as hogs) with pumpkin seeds.
    I’ve seen farmers buy up leftover pumpkins, after Halloween, just for the purpose of feeding hogs. A bonus for doing this might be antihelmithic properties. I know scientists have debated this one, but I think the seeds were pulverized, or made into a tincture. Some things work best, without alteration.
    Regardless, pumpkins and pumpkin guts still provide a tasty snack for the piggies.
    Oh yeah, my dogs always loved pumpkin guts too. I know they are safe, and pumpkin is often found in commercial dog chow, and even recommended as a snack (guts, seeds, or flesh)!

    Big pumpkins will yeild a pumpkin-y but not as floral or sweet taste. SMALL pumpkins give you INCREDIBLE pumpkin bread :) big works too!

      I mix em. 2 cups little, 1/2 jack o lantern leftovers, and 1 cup Chinese pumpkin squash.
      Lotsa pumpkin spice, roast and hull the seeds and use those instead of walnuts. Family goes nuts for it every year.

      Also- bought a grain mill to save money on making weird flour- turns out, you can set the stones to where it takes all the pumpkin and sunflower seeds out of their shells instantly. Life changing!

    Wow! What an outstanding presentation. I learned a lot and thank you for all that. By the way, a potato peeler when pushed in like a knife can make a really good set of small holes that look like warts in pumpkin light. It’s also great for smoothing out cut out areas. Keep up the good work! Seriously, this is one of the few vids I’ve truly enjoyed lately. Thanks again.

    put the seeds AND other innards into a pan with a cup or so of water. turn on medium heat and cook til soft (30ish minutes) mash then add butter - with seeds, yes. you can add a little himilayan or black volcanic salt to taste.
    YUM.
