Takeaways from tonight's episode: 1. Sydney, Chris A., Lynne, Chris C. and a late arriving Rich (long time no see) in the house 2. Chris Alo aka "Grumpy Face" 3. "Death Alley River" 4. "Damn, where's that jacket?" 5. "It's an honor just being nominated" 6. Three Deep Purple dudes vs. three Deep Purple Dudes 7. "...walking like a hobo or whatever the fuck the line is!" 8. "How many panties were thrown on stage?" 9. "Good thing I dropped my F bombs before you came on" 10. "Lou Grahaming it" 11. "That's the candy ass one?" On tonight's topic, I cant rate these two albums as I have not heard either one in their entirety..
As for "Here I Go Again", I do think the original more direct version captures the 'loneliness' aspect better. Remember seeing them perform the song on German TV show Na Sowas! in front of a stunned audience, not accustomed to seeing longhaired dudes in tight jeans up close. Also had a nice piece on them in Kerrang! from the video shoot, with that legendary balcony shot of Coverdale sitting down. 'Hobo' merely flows better when sung than 'drifter' as a lyric, simple as that, I think. Not David's best but it is what it is.
I love the boogie keyboards on ‘Bloody Luxury’.. being a fan of 50’s Rock’n’Roll. I remember hearing a guy shouting out for ‘Lie Down’ at Snake’s gig at the Birmingham NEC in 1988 and I was still on that page,as a Whitesnake fan. S&S’s first four songs are excellent, the original ‘Crying In The Rain’ has a blues sensibility courtesy of Bernie Marsden and Paicey keeping it measured behind the kit. Get ‘A.I’ to drop in “drifter” instead of “hobo” and that would be my favourite version of ‘Here I Go On Again’. Rainbow ‘Straight Between..’ ‘Death Alley..’ ‘Stone Cold’ ‘Tearing Out..’ & ‘Eyes On Fire’, have always been head & shoulders above anything else on that album. In short the two albums in discussion would make two great E.P’s!
7-1 from the panel.in favour of Rainbow is pretty conclusive of their views. I like both these albums and there are a couple of songs on Saints that I like more than anything on Straight, but in general I find the latter Rainbow album more consistent so I'm going to agree with the majority of the panel here and yes, Blackmore's guitar work is fantastic.
I listened t both albums today, just to be fair because I knew Whitesnake was going to win for me but I must say, there are a few tunes I really enjoy on Rainbow's album.
I love both of these, but there's something about "Saints And Sinners" that puts it over the top for me! I am a huge fan of "Straight Between The Eyes", but I think that the tracks overall are more memorable on "Saints And Sinners" I weirdly enough actually prefer this version of "Here I Go Again" to the 1987 one, but that is probably due to me just hearing the 87 version over and over again lol
Both featuring awesome deep tracks that deserve more attention. Bring On the Night (Dream Chaser) and Eyes of Fire are as great as any of the Rainbow hits. Saints & Sinners being the last album of the snakes to feature the classic line-up. Ian paice delivering awesome grooves non-stop.
Saints & Sinners is the era of Whitesnake that I love. Never have been a huge Rainbow fan. I listened to Straight Between The Eyes and it's still Saints & Sinners for me.
Has to be Rainbow for me. It was the first Rainbow album I ever heard. Like others commented I saw the Stone Cold video and liked the song. It was atmospheric but catchy. It's definitely JLT's best record with band.
This is pretty much the rock and roll version of Sophie's Choice. I'm glad you guys figured it out for me so I don't have to live with the consequences.
I like both albums. I prefer Straight Between The Eyes over both Difficult to Cure and Bent Out of Shape . But for me I prefer Saints and Sinners out of these two. It's a harder edged album and I do prefer the Whitesnale that was pre 1987. I saw Whitesnake on the Saints & Sinners tour and they were fabulous - Cozy Powell did the tour. Great gig.
Have really loved these Album Wars!! Back in those days I was more into Alternative/"Left of the Dial" and Punk rock. So was not familiar with most of the records on these first three Wars. This War, I like "Saints and Sinners". Wanted to see the tour - Rainbow/Scorpions/Riot in Prov. RI, but missed it. Would have LOVED to have seen Scorps/Riot!!
Damn….. can I get a draw???? I seriously cannot decide. Two of my all time favourites. I’ll have to go with Rainbow since I saw that concert at the Montreal Forum a hundred years ago. ..Death Alley Driver solo… cmon.. tie breaker. I had the tshirt too!!! One of my favourite concerts of all time. Laser beams for eyes
Not a close one for me. This is probably my least favorite Whitesnake album of the early blues era. "Ready an' Willing", "Come an' Get It", "Love Hunter", and "Live in the Heart of the City" are far superior in my opinion. Then "Slide It In" really crushes it. So, I don't have any connection to this one. The songs that were carried over to the "87" album are better as well. Now, "Straight Between the Eyes" is my favorite Joe Lynn Turner album. Great production and strong material! Easy win for "Straight Between the Eyes".
nah . I'll pass. straight between the eyes had some good songs aside from stone cold but they weren't on the same level as Rainbow rising . different band .
Tough call! As much as I love both albums I have to give the edge to "Straight Between the Eyes" just for 'Stone Cold', 'Death Alley Driver', and 'Miss Mistreated' alone.
Definitely Whitesnake for me. I love that classic band lineup. I love RJD Rainbow but nothing after that. And honestly I’ve never been a fan of JLT. Really enjoying these album battles. SOT IS THE BEST CHANNEL ON RUclips.
For me it has to be Saints an' Sinners even though SBTE has some fantastic highlights and wonderful soloing from Blackmore. Saints An' Sinners is a poignant album in some ways because, with the possible exception of the UK version of Slide It In, it's the last time Coverdale made the music that he truly enjoyed not just creating and playing but listening to as well. Additionally, while Jon Lord was always underutilised in Whitesnake, if you compare Crying in the Rain and Here I Go Again to the 1987 versions his presence is sorely missed on those re-recordings. There may be fewer standout classic tracks this time around, but I think Saints an' Sinners is one of the most consistent and enjoyable Whitesnake albums!
oh man hahaha, you have a knack for picking these episodes where the choice is really close but I think I gotta go with Whitesnake here as that is my favorite Whitesnake album
"Straight Between The Eyes" is so underrated. Great hard-rock album with great Blackmore's solos. "Eyes of Fire" is easily one of the best Rainbow songs. Joe Lynn Turner is really great singer, and I love his late vocals even more. His solo albums is also awesome, especially "JLT", "Usual Suspects" and "Second Hand Life". All Rainbow and Deep Purple fans MUST check it out.
I have listened to both of these albums A LOT. Rainbow is my favourite band and I love Whitesnake, so it was a tough choice. I was a little surprised that Rainbow won 7-1 - I thought Whitesnake would be your pick. I rank Straight... higher than Saints... mainly because of Ritchie´s guitar work and the three songs Death Alley Driver, Stone Cold and Eyes of Fire. By the way, I saw JLT perform Death Alley Driver at a concert Feb - 20 in Sweden and he still does that song brilliantly!
Thank you, for your picks. I love and have both, Rainbow ‘Straight Between the Eyes’ and Whitesnake ‘ Saints & Sinners’. * Rainbow has an edge over Whitesnake for me. Happy Valentine’s Day !! Heart ❤️ rocks !! 🎤🎸🎵🎹🥁 Life is better with music.
Perhaps the shortest episode of the Hudson Valley Squares to date but still filled with laughs and great opinions. Thanks to Lynn, Syndey, Rich, Chris and Chris and you, too, Pete, for taking time to appear and entertain us on Valentine's Day. Looking forward to the next album war.
I'm a huge fan, too. Made me feel great to see that shirt. Thanks for bringing that out. Within The Veil is amazing. Heard that weird new vinyl? Freaky different takes. Love hearing all that.
Got to go with my ex- Cliftonite neighbor. JLT. Own both, like both , gotta go RAINBOW 🌈, but the WhiteSnake album 💿 is no Slouch. My early MTV video instilled in my 🧠 brain. Stone COLD. 👍💯
I love both albums, but Whitesnake's Saints &Sinners is the first Whitesnake album I ever got back in 1988 at ten years old. I actually got it by accident back in 1988. I saw that it had Here I Go Again so I grabbed it to buy it on cassette tape. At that time I had no idea that the version of Here I Go Again that I knew was a different version than the one on Saints & Sinners . I actually ended up loving the Saints &Sinners album eventually, but the first time I listened to it I did not care for it. Saints & Sinners is my vote because of nostalgia reasons.
I remember going to see Whitesnake on the Saints And Sinners tour and Rainbow the following year on the Bent Out Of Shape tour. At the time I proffered the Whitesnake album, but in concert Rainbow were on a completely different level to Whitesnake.
I'll go with Straight Between the Eyes. I don't think "Stone Cold" is as good as everyone here hypes it up to be, but I think it's a better album than Saints & Sinners (and besides, I'm not crazy about "Here I Go Again). Both are commercial, but both are solid. I doubt either would make a top ten of 1982. Besides, I'm not crazy about Deep Purple after Mark II.
Nice Fear Of God shirt. Big fan of that album and Dawn. Shuffling both of the album war albums while I watch. Awesome! Straight Between all the way for me. Love Ritchie's playing on that one, too. Kills.
Oh, one more thing. I agree w/Chris Alo about the Saints an' Sinners' version of Here I Go Again. The hobo line totally kills that song. I like the '87 version better too. I'm good with either version of Cryin' In The Rain. But I made a similar comment on Martin Popoff's Contrarians episode on Whitesnake. I recommend any Whitesnake fan who hasn't checked it out doing so.
@Pete Pardo - Saw a quote and thought would be a great in the fun house with Martin. Quote was that Tony Banks is probably the greatest Organ/Keyboard player in rock, better than lord, wakeman etc. maybe you could do a top 5 ?
I've never given a Whitsnake album a chance. Now that I'm older I will probably change that. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and I hated that pop metal stuff. Nowadays I've softened up a bit. Didn't get into the non Dio Rainbow albums until the last few years, but I like them a lot.
Well it was almost a runaway Landslide but keeler put his one in for snake. I do like that idea though Pete I watched that rock fantasy showdown between machine Head and volume four but you definitely need to insert yourself not always last. Sometime I one of these forums or every now and then go first or put yourself in the middle that is a good idea
Not an overly huge fan of David Coverdale and could say the same thing about Rainbow post Dio. Comes down to a coin toss. The coin's been tossed. Whitesnake wins.
I'd go with Straight Between the Eyes too. Love these album wars! And, great looking hairdo indeed! Just when I thought Sydney could not look any prettier, whoa!
Definitely Whitesnake. Also the 1982 versions of the songs are much better than the 1987 versions IMO. I just love that era of Whitesnake much more than the 1987 and on and Slide it in is somewhere in between, but always considered lesser than any of the 4 albums that came before.
I hope we get some 1992 wars. Running Wild- Pile of Skulls vs Blind Guardian- Somewhere Far Beyond. Pantera Vulgar Display of Power vs Megadeth- Countdown To Extinction.
Love the new hair Syd. As far as albums go, ill have to pick Rainbow. I like their aor period, no shame in it. Both great bands and albums but tough to pick against the mighty Blackmore. Cheers fellas.
I love both albums a lot but I have to go with Ritchie. He plays so great on that album. Saints and Sinners was a grower for me but yeah I really love that album too
There are pretty close. I will give the edge to "Straight Between the Eyes" just because I absolutely love the song "Miss Mistreated", it's probably my favorite Rainbow song. I think "Saints and Sinners" first half of the album is quite a bit stronger than the 2nd half outside of "Dancing Girls" which is a great song.
Love both albums but would just give it to RAINBOW. Love the Whitesnake album though. this was the classic period. only giving it to Rainbow because of eyes of fire.
i don't think i've ever heard 'Saints an' Sinners'; but i totally had 'Straight Between the Eyes' on the turntable a lot that year......and i already pick MSG over Gary Moore, and Raven over Manowar...
That was an easy one.. but maybe you can do the same double header with 1981 albums of those bands? It would be great and much tighter.. Although i think Difficult to cure will be the winner.
Saints & Sinners by a mile. SBTE was a record I could never get into. I loved Rainbow, too. Just exactly who played on Saints & Sinners? I know it was a tumultuous time in Whitesnake’s career.
Saints and Sinners. No contest. There is only one version of Here I Go Again and it is here. Always loved Rock N Roll Angels. It was Whitesnakes last great album
While I love Coverdale-fronted Deep Purple, I'm kind of indifferent to Whitesnake for whatever reason. On the other hand, I'm a big fan of Rainbow in all its incarnations and "Straight Between the Eyes" came out when I was a senior in high school and got tons of play....both on the radio and from me and my friends. 'Stone Cold' is one of my top '80s songs. Rainbow is the pick for me. P.S. Why is this the first time I've heard about Sidney's "Metal on the Inside" channel?? I'm now subscribed.
I had never actually listened to "Straight Between The Eyes" before thinking that all the great 70s bands went Into the 80s with a nosedive in quality of their albums(which is sometimes not true & a bad way to think I'll admit haha) but I must say the album was better than I expected, quite good actually. But I love Coverdale so much & I actually love the whole bar room "boogie-woogie" Whitesnake more than The Sykes era, because it reminds me more of Mark 3 Purple. Saints & Sinners wins hands down for me.
I know and own both albums, but I don't have a close connection with either of them. I'll go with Rainbow, because I love Stone Cold, that is a killer song.
This was a hard one.......both albums are great both bands are great and I love both Coverdale and Joe Lynn I actually love Joe Lynn more but for me this came down to which one, two, or three songs were more enjoyable to listen to again and I felt those particular songs on Rainbow ----"Straight between the Eyes" were much more enjoyable.......songs like Eyes of Fire.....Miss Mistreated......Rock Fever.....were much more enjoyable than some of the songs on Whitesnake "Saints and Sinners" so in conclusion for this week it's Rainbow "Straight between the Eyes" for the win
Have to disagree with a lot of people on this - I MUCH prefer the original version of "Here I Go Again". If I never heard the re-record again, it would be too soon - but I would listen to the original
I love Rainbow and saw them many times including this tour. But, im not the biggest Joe Lynn Turner guy. I b Came in with Dio and also Graham Bonnet . And they were both way better singers. I saw Rainbow and Pat Travers in 81 and Turner spent the whole show posing . I love this era Whitesnake . Underrated album and Sinners wins this battle for me. But they are both good albums. Listening to the girls on the panel makes we wonder if joe lynn turner was fat and bald in 82 but had the same limited voice, would they still be as big of fans ?? Lol.
Takeaways from tonight's episode:
1. Sydney, Chris A., Lynne, Chris C. and a late arriving Rich (long time no see) in the house
2. Chris Alo aka "Grumpy Face"

Chris Alo's rant about David Coverdale's lyrics for "Here I Go Again" was hilarious!!! Actually all of his rants are hilarious!
Hard to choose, both are extremely underrated, I think I'll go with "Saints an' Sinners", I actually like the earlier version of 'Here I Go Again'.
Like a Hobo I was born to bum change
As for "Here I Go Again", I do think the original more direct version captures the 'loneliness' aspect better. Remember seeing them perform the song on German TV show Na Sowas! in front of a stunned audience, not accustomed to seeing longhaired dudes in tight jeans up close. Straight Between the Eyes is an incredible record. I love the sound of Ritchies guitar the most on this release
7-1 from the panel.in favour of Rainbow is pretty conclusive of their views. Eyes Of Fire a true gem.

I totally agree with you, I generally prefer the older bluesy Whitesnake era because it reminds me more of mk 3 Purple.
Wasn't in to Rainbow back in the 80s but now Im amazed how great the band was.
Those that don't get the blues don't get it. Original Snake guitarists Mick Moody & Bernie Marsden 🔥.
Has to be Rainbow for me. It was the first Rainbow album I ever heard. Like others commented I saw the Stone Cold video and liked the song. It was atmospheric but catchy. It's definitely JLT's best record with band.

I love how upset folks get when Alo points out the undeniable "candy assity" of Bent out of shape.

Straight Between the Eyes was my introduction to Rainbow and I was hooked
Straight between the eyes for me. It has more strong tunes IMO. Underrated album.
The Rainbow lineup I came in on so SBTE will get my vote everytime. Saw the tour, the eyes got the TShirt wore it to death.
Not a close one for me. This is probably my least favorite Whitesnake album of the early blues era. nah . I'll pass. straight between the eyes had some good songs aside from stone cold but they weren't on the same level as Rainbow rising . different band .
@@arturoalmazan5262 not sure anyone here is comparing either to "Rising". They were a different band. No question.
Love that fact you are debating in details these great albums from my past
I have to go with Saints and Sinners.
Here I go again, is way BETTER on this Album.
Easy choice for me here on this particular war, Whitesnake “Saints and Sinners”.
Bloody Luxury is my favorite Whitesnake Song, of all the Whitesnake Song
Gotta go with Rainbow, Death Alley Driver is such a banger.🔥🤘🏻🎧

I would take Whitesnake hands down. Rainbow after Dio just lost something they had some good songs but just came up a little short
Thank you, for your picks.
I love and have both, Rainbow ‘Straight Between the Eyes’ and Whitesnake ‘ Saints & Sinners’.
* Rainbow has an edge over Whitesnake for me.
Happy Valentine’s Day !!

Love the Fear of God shirt, Chris! 🤘
Nobody talks about them. "Within The Veil" in particular. Amazing album. One of a kind.
Dawn Crosby ♥
Thanks buddy! Talked about them a few times a while back on a "favorite females" show or something on here.

@@JeffMcLeod have not. I'd love to. I'll research. Thanks 👍✌

I gotta go for Rainbow too. Next weeks will be tough!!!! Cant wait!!

Should have included Gillan Magic and made it rank the top 3 Deep Purple splinter bands.
That would have been cool.
Now I’m going to have to check out the Rainbow album. I discovered Rainbow very late and I’ve only really paid attention to the Dio era.
I love both albums, but Whitesnake's Saints &Sinners is the first Whitesnake album I ever got back in 1988 at ten years old. I actually got it by accident back in 1988. Rainbow.
I hung with JLT back in 2004 at an event in Orlando and he was a super cool dude. Stone Cold is an epic song too.

Love both albums but would just give it to RAINBOW. Love the Whitesnake album though. this was the classic period. only giving it to Rainbow because of eyes of fire.
Maybe go to war with Billy squier's emotions in motion and Aldo Nova's classic album
Sydney looking like a rock 💫
i don't think i've ever heard 'Saints an' Sinners'; but i totally had 'Straight Between the Eyes' on the turntable a lot that year......and i already pick MSG over Gary Moore, and Raven over Manowar...
For me it's Whitesnake all the way......without a doubt...... even though I prefer "Crying in the Rain" and "Here I Go Again" on the '87 album.
That was an easy one.. but maybe you can do the same double header with 1981 albums of those bands? It would be great and much tighter.. Although i think Difficult to cure will be the winner.
This is amazing. No women that I know have ever even heard of Rainbow!
Eh… let’s see…? Hm. Whitesnake. Bought it when i was 16 in 82. Loved it. The Rainbow one i bought too. I’ll go for Whitesnake.
Still a delightful show despite Butch and Steve's absence. Never gets old guys.
This episode has been a difficult one for me you guys.... 😀
Nile shirt!!! They are amazing live.
Gotta go with Rainbow on this one.
I thought Rich was gonna pick Winger 😋
Rainbow never became a 'hair band'. For that reason, I will always choose Rainbow!
it's a tough one, SBTE is my favourite Rainbow, but ultimately I'm a bigger Whitesnake fan and S&S is a great album, so Whitesnake by a hair....
Saints and Sinners is the one for me..easy. Whitesnake was a very good band around that time.
This is tough because both are fantastic but I have to go rainbow
Pete any plans to do 'Megadeth - Rust In Peace' vs ???????. 32 years later, I have just discovered this album.
Rainbow all the way on this one. Their best with Turner.
You still hear at least 4 songs from straight between the eyes on the radio.
Rainbow, SBTE was my first from them!
Have to disagree with a lot of people on this - I MUCH prefer the original version of "Here I Go Again". If I never heard the re-record again, it would be too soon - but I would listen to the original
I think I'd give the edge to Rainbow on this - I saw them on this tour with Scorpions and Riot opening - what a great show!
I love Rainbow and saw them many times including this tour. But, im not the biggest Joe Lynn Turner guy. I b
Came in with Dio and also Graham Bonnet . Lol.
