  • Newcastle's best-loved summer fair is on hold for another year, organisers have confirmed.
The Hoppings, ordinarily held in June on Newcastle's Town Moor, had been pushed back to August, after being cancelled due to Covid-19 in 2020.
So if, like us, you're missing the famous travelling fair, take a trip down memory lane with this dive into the archives while we await its return in 2022.
The name Hoppings is thought to come from the hopping, or dancing, that often took place at old fairs.
The Hoppings began in 1882 as a temperance fair, designed as a counter-attraction to the boozy Race Week at nearby Newcastle Racecourse.
The fair was an instant hit, and has ever since been a key event in the region’s summer calendar.
