My mate worked in Butterworths butchers shop. I was born in a house right next door to what became the Aventine club. The Five Wands became my local pub. The Ping On Chinese takeaway has been there forever. I got married in 1980 in St Cuthbert's church I'm still married to the same woman. Ah sweet memories.....
I lived in gateshead in the early 2000s two of my 4 kids were born there, very grim place i remember the trafalgar pub and its clientele lol Parklane was a good laugh though on a friday and saturday night.
Spent many an hour in that old scrapyard beside the river getting bits to keep our pride and joy on the road !
Quite a few memories there! Lived in bensham 1956/72.
I love Gateshead :D ... Recognise nearly every single place in these photos -- i feel really old now however lmao!
Gateshead grew exponentially in the 1800s as the coal trade built up, bringing in other industries too. But it's been a long and slow story of decline, starting from the late 1800s when Britain was overtaken by the USA and Germany. Once the coal went, Gateshead lost much of its reason to exist. I wonder if many of today's young people have any idea of all of the buildings and houses that used to stand, like the massive CWS building that used to be in Dunston.
My home town. Married at St Cuthbert's church on Bensham Road, Five Wands Mill Inn the local pub. Great days 👍
I was living in Bensham in 1978, my first home with my future husband.
Still together. Remember all those places mentioned.
Brilliant. Happy Days!
It would have been great to see a ‘then and now’ of these photos.
youll find a few videos like that here on youtube pal ;-)
Not much has changed lol I work in Gateshead
Brilliant brings back memories born and bred in bensham
Thank you for the kind words. Quick question for you didn’t Gazza come from Bensham?
@Icelandic Traveller Dunston that's where I grew up only 1 mile away from bensham the front man of ACDC brian Johnson comes from Dunston shame about gazza he has horrible disorder I knowing a lot of people who died through the drink genius footballer
@@Gunnar_Gunnarson Dunston is where he is from.

@@Hm32271 brian Johnson from Dunston
Anyone here live on the Chandless estate 73 to 80? Or go to Lindisfarne school?
Theres a couple of the filming locations for the Paper Lads in there
Paper lads?
@@Gunnar_Gunnarson Yeah, childrens television series by Tyne Tees. Filmed in late 1970's. You get to see all these streets that no longer exist, mixed in with things that are still there now, that give you a sense of where it is. Storylines sometimes leave a lot to be desired, but its charming.
Tommy Braund’s bike shop on Coatsy Road 😊 happy memories

Some streets my way often wonder if anyone bothered to take pictures before it was all knocked down and rebuilt on. Bit sad in a way.
I still live in gateshead so for me this video was fascinating to watch and see if I could recognise any areas
Yes I agree
It’s a tragedy the way all those buildings were knocked down.
I remember going to the Pin-On Chop Suey takeout. lot's of times in he 1970s. It was always busy.
@02:37 - the old family home (before the graffiti)
Take me back to the 70s and 80s please
Sorry, you have to stay in 2024
Nicely put together. I realise you found these pictures on the internet and I am flattered you used them, but it would be nice if you credited me as being the photographer (of all of them). Thanks in advance, Trevor Ermel
I’m so sorry, Trevor. It’s just a personal hobby. Full Acknowledgement to your great work.
I have added an acknowledgement in the text.
@@Gunnar_Gunnarson Thanks so much, Gunnar. Much appreciated.
Loved the photos Trevor. The ones with the trains in the landscape reminded me of O Winston Link.
We need to go back in time because the future is looking so very grim. Personally I’m old and glad to be because your future isn’t for me. Not fit for anyone as it’s close to 1984 and that book was horrendous.
I'm 52 Brian and feel the same. Crazy,Crazy times these last 4yrs. 1984 terrified me.
Gilliam Thompson, está por ahí ??
I was there in the 80s. This was the nadir. Some of the shots show land where the Metrocentre was built. It’s also before the Council started putting sculptures all over the place which eventually led to the Angel of the North, the Sage etc. Given what they had to work with and the meager resources, the Council did a fantastic job. It’s not easy trying to regenerate a place like Gateshead
Sculptures that were crap!
Is gateshead a suburb of Newcastle?
Gateshead is in County Durham, on the South side of the river Tyne. Newcastle is in Northumberland, on the North side of the River Tyne.
@@alneal100 I know I've been in both, was winding you up
Gateshead is in tyne and wear and so is Newcastle@@alneal100
@@ianclayton2651 Yes, I stand corrected. I left the Northeast when I was just a teenager.
@@ianclayton2651 I knew that Gateshead was in Tyne and Wear. I grew up in Lobley Hill. I emigrated to the USA when I was young.
is Emanuel Swedenborg from Gateshead?
Nowt has changed much, still a slum area unless you live next to a councillor. So called works of art was paid for by European money not local tax money and is hideous anyway. Visit Gateshead" it's lovely by the river" and a massive slum everywhere else should be in a tourist information booklet
Many years ago it was not the best, but has improved considerably For sure
the 'european money' came from local tax money....
@@ontheslide2339 A fraction of the local tax money
That's true! Gateshead Council are the most bent corrupt council in England.
Many of the images were captured by a wonderful Tyneside photographer called Trevor Ermel. Pity you couldn't be bothered do the decent thing and credit his work - yet you credit the music! Really poor. 👎
I found the photos on the internet and I had no idea who took the pictures. I do this for fun. The site is not monetised. It is a hobby where I try to recreate the lost world of post war Britain. I’m sorry you got so upset
I saw this video for the first time today and recognised all the pictures were taken by me. Well spotted by you! I let Gunnar know and he now credits me as the photographer. Cheers!
