Passing the hat to Nami is a pivotal moment bcuz it translates into: You take care of my treasure that I hold dear and I'll take care of your treasure (which is the village/ppl of the village).
Luffy loves that hat, it's like his treasure so he won't give it to anyone... giving it to her is kinda like saying "he trusts her and he treasures their friendship"
The wine metaphor explained: Wine needs time to really become good, but if you wait too long it goes bad. The two old men are wine right now but if they miss the point to turn over responsibilites to the next generation they becomes sour. Garp counters this 'argument' with whiskey . Whiskey contains way more alcohol which preservs the drink for way longer. So he basically says if you are built differently you get better the more you age. Zeff wants Garp to trust in the next generation. 100000 berry are ~1000USD Nami stabbing the Arlong-tattoo is literally the only thing she can think of 'resisting' him. He holds all the cards at this point. He is stronger, has a crew of people who are, by common believe, superior to humans in every way. taller, faster, stronger. This is not just Arlong saying this, this is a fact (compared to 'normal humans at least). So from her perspective she cannot do to resist Arlong, but still she feels that hatred. And the only place for her violence to go is the tattoo..
One thing i would add to Nami stabbing her tattoo is that at that specific moment she kinda hates herself a bit as well as Arlong, since it seems like her actions sealed a course of action that would get her village killed at the hands of Arlong, this is a little bit clearer in the anime because of the scene that happens directly before that, it's quite a mental and emotional breakdown

This being a Japanese creation, Berry are about equivalent to yen, which are about 1 US penny. Arlong’s tribute is therefore about $1000, a tough ask for a poor family but not ridiculous. Nami’s stash is about $1 million.
As a little girl, I think Nami would have been afraid of anyone trying to intervene for her again because it could make Arlong kill them. For instance, if the village thought that Nami was doing this for them maybe they would try to rescue her or attack the fishmen, which would get them killed. She is definitely traumatized about losing those she cares about. By pushing them away she made it so they wouldn't be targetted by Arlong. Things are different in a couple important ways in the manga, but the overall story is the same. In that,
she tells her sister early on (forced to tell her, they say) and then her sister tells the village. The village knows the whole time but Nami doesn't know that they know, and they don't tell her because they want her to be willing to escape if it gets too tough, and not stay because the village is counting on her. When Arlong betrays her, the town reveals it knows, and wants to stand up for Nami (and themselves). As they rush off to their deaths, refusing to let her try collecting the 100 mil again, that's when she starts stabbing at the tattoo and Luffy stops her.
Early on yelled at her "don't touch my hat", then later here when she finally comes back around he puts it on her to signify that she is also his treasure. Also, think of berry as being similar to yen, which I always equate to being like a penny. So, 100 million would be like 1 million dollars. That's not the current exchange rate but just think of it as on the order of a penny each.
20:16 He put the hat on her to tell her that he still trusts her, and that he won't just run away if the fight gets hard, since he wouldn't leave the hat behind.
Gold Roger is the King of the pirates, the man that Garp had to arrest and execute. For the hat it makes a bit more sense in the manga, from the start Luffy didn't let anyone touch his hat cause it's his treasure (and he said it to Nami) so when he give her the hatthat's the proof of his trust
The scene where a self-reliant Nami finally breaking down, feeling helpless for the first time, crying and then asking Luffy for help is also one of the most emotional scene in the manga's early chapters after Luffy saying goodbye to Shanks. I think the scene lacks the emotional punch in the LA, it could've been better IMO. The director should've aimed for the "ugly cry" with tears and snots streaming down abundantly from Nami's face as it's what happened in the source material originally. It is an important scene where Luffy who was a no one in Nami's life, stood up for her, protecting her and fighting for her without hesitation and unconditionally. And this is all after Nami "betrayed" Luffy. It is one of the time where Luffy earned respect/friendship from Nami, just like he earned respect/friendship from Zoro. This scene is also an important scene to portray the relationship between "nakamas" in the Straw-Hat Pirates. On another point, I don't want to nitpick but I'm not too keen also on how Arlong was portrayed in LA. For me, Arlong should've been more physically imposing as he's actually 263 cm in the manga. It's also his size that made him so scary IMO. The director could've done a forced-perspective shots like with Gandalf and the Hobbits in TLOTR for that and the make-up/prosthetics could've been better, but I understand the budget for Netflix releases is unlike the budget for feature films. Now that this show has been proven as a hit, I'm hoping they can increase the budget for Season 2 though, I don't want a certain character that's going to be in the Straw-Hat Pirates next season to look bad whether it's CGI or prosthetics. I'm really nervous for the portrayal of that character since IMO it could make or break the show. I just can't wait for Season 2 !!!

The Japanese translation of Nazumi actually means rat or mouse, so Nazumi dresses like his name. Also when Arlong says, "maybe the rat can earn some berry after all," Nazumi lives up to his name.
In the anime Arlong took Nami when he saw a sea chart at their house and grabbed it, Nami said something like “give that back it’s mine” and when Arlong heard Nami drew it, He just took her. I’m pretty sure atleast. So when watching the anime it wasn’t a situation of “I don’t know if I can justify what she did” because she really had no choice.
In the manga they make clearer why Luffy gives her his hat. It's for two reasons: -At this point in the manga, Luffy always took his hat off before fighting so it doesn't get blown everywhere by the fight (later he gets string for it to keep it on). In the manga, taking his hat off = ready to fight. -The hat is "his treasure" and means a lot to him, giving it to Nami shows how much he trusts her and how much she means to him to give him his treasure. The manga makes this clear with a flashback panel.
I have watched dozens of reactions to this Amazing Show … 😭 and each time it gets the same response- Total Immersion. The near complete connection to characters they’ve just met. Harp Strings Played 🙏
I thought the whole "Wealth, Fame, Power. Gol D Roger, the King of the Pirates, attained this and everything else the world had to offer, and his dying words drove countless men to the seas." was unnecessary at the beginning of every anime episode then I heard her ask "Who's Gold Roger?" Good video tho
Yeah, after a thousand episodes we just absorved it into our minds so it feels unnecessary to us 😂 i think because Netflix releases it all in one time, they didn't put that so wouls feel repetitive. Like, lots of netflix shows don't enevn has propper intros. They're more like chapter signals. I think if the show was weekly maybe they had put a variation of that intro, because i thing is actually pretty cool.
The Talk between Garp and Zeff, when Zeff talks about the wine and its perfect age, he is talking about himself and Garp. He is referencing how they have peaked, and it is time to lean back and enjoy the spoils of their work before they spoil. Garp retorts by mentioning whiskey, as a metaphor for only getting better and stronger with each passing year, a small defiance in the face of truth. He already knows everything Zeff is saying, but he is refusing to accept it as fact.
11:15 : Captain Nezumi is a rat , his name "Nezumi" in japenese mean "rat". Oda love played with name. the nami backstory is a little different from the original, but the basic concept still applies... having others know about the deal also mean Arlong could use them to have even more power over Nami
Older people will have a easier time connecting Luffy and Garp due to their names since they will most likely know Garp full name (Monkey D Garp) and Luffy saying "I'm Monkey D Luffy, the man that will become king of the pirates" is a given. Most commoners and younger people will not make the connection due to Garp being more know as "the hero of the marines Garp" nowdays plus not being as active. For the hat that is very important symbolism since its Luffy most precious treasure, he say so in episode 2 and we see what it means to him, so given it to Nami is a way to show how important she is to him
The anime explains the situation with Nami much better, but they still did the scenes and story justice mostly. The anime was much, MUCH darker, especially the death of the Mom.
17:51 After seeing this season in the anime this is really the one change I have a problem with in the anime at the very least her sister and the guy with the scar(though I think the entire village as well) were aware of why Nami was working for Arlong. The change hurts the story in my opinion because the reason Nojiko has a tattoo is because of how upset Nami was after being forced to get that tattoo on her shoulder, she did it as a way to support Nami.
And after all these backstory, their backstories barely finish, like they show us Luffy back stories, we still don't know how he end up there and why he's not with his parents,
I know lots of people recommend the anime but my suggestion would be to read the manga instead to get an idea if you like it. I enjoy the manga myself, but I find it exhausting to watch the anime after first watching this live action adaptation. I think it's because the live action show is so well-paced and there's not really much filler. In the anime and manga, the same events take much more time. That said, watching the anime is something lots of react people do, and from than perspective, I suppose it's one way to guarantee having over 1000 more episodes of stuff to react to lol As for the hat thing, I think they're showing us a couple things. Yes, I think it's a callback to Shanks passing it on to Luffy, but the situation is a bit different here too. That said, in both cases the passing of the hat shows loves and respect. Putting it on her is showing that he accepts and loves her even after seemingly betraying him. I also think it symbolizes her finally becoming a full member of the Straw Hat Crew. Luffy always saw her as crew, but this scene is sort of symbolic of her finally seeing herself that way too it seems. I feel like he's also doing it as a gesture of love, as a way to comfort her. And in that moment we also get the camera angles looking down at her and up at him, which in this scene really emphasizes that helplessness and hopelessness that she feels, as well as the fact that Luffy is the person she can look up to to help when she's at her lowest low. After years of bottling things up, being aloof, trying to do it all on her own, she finally cracks and lets her guard down. Luffy putting the hat on her feels like a warm hug from a loved one when we're going through a tough time. It says, "Don't worry. I'm here for you no matter what."
the anime does so much in the way of context for most of these scenes. the live action is fun. but its a poor imitation of the genuine article. most people think this once they watch the anime and get to arlong park
You're gonna want to want to watch the anime at the end. Definitely. That's a foregone conclusion. But will you? They do such a good job of giving you the same emotions as the anime. But the anime is better.
The arc with Nami's story is IMHO the one that suffered the most under the adaptation despite being changed less drastically than the other arcs. Her story is very impactful and the emotional high notes hit the right spots, but they cut out so much detail involving Nami and the villagers that it is but a hollow shell of the real story. Without going into spoiler territory (you intend to check out the anime after all) all I can say is that the vibe of the mother is different (the 'slap' is very random in the live action imho), the sister has a different role (exactly as you asked: why didn't she tell her?) and the villagers themselves are far more involved in the plot. Not to mention the climax that is the self-harm scene: Nami's actions make more sense in the original because the live action cannot drive home well enough that 'all hope is finally lost'. And those are just the elements that affect the (depth of the) emotional catharsis that is the key of this arc; everything involved Arlong is fairly different too, mostly due to pretty obvious production reasons. Nami's actress did an amazing job though, and I really love this episode for what it brings to the table! But it is a story with enough depth that it could easily fill up double the amount of runtime than it did. Btw, the relevance of the hat was one of the primary themes of the second episode: remember how protective Luffy is of it, and how he treats it as a treasure. The gesture here is 'you entrust me with your treasure, and I will let you look after mine'. He's not a hero saving a damsel, but just a person extending a hand to his friend. Sure, Luffy is good when it comes to the brawling, but he's an utter idiot who can't sail. Friends help each other out, and it is okay to rely on others. That is the meaning of his actions there, since Nami obviously has never been able to rely on others. As for the Zeff & Garp scene... these are two characters that _never_ meet in the original material. (At least not on screen!) Other than the general topic of the conversation, that entire interaction is one gigantic blob of fanservice. One Piece fans like it when their old coots talk about the old days. xD Do Nami's actions redeem her? I think there are very few in the fanbase who haven't forgiven her for what she went through. I hope you'll end up checking out either the manga or the anime, since they do a far better job at motivating everything about the circumstances and the decisions of every character involved.
Nami's decision doesn't make sense, plain and simple. The source does it better by forcing her to make that decision since Arlong kidnapped her. Her volunteering is one of the changes that frustrates me in this adaption of this arc.
If 1000 episodes is too much, just read the manga. It's a lot faster and way better anyway. The manga is one of the best stories ever, on par with stuff like LotR. The anime for the most part is kinda mid.
There's not even a date yet & even then it is still gonna be seasonal, so, regardless of how much they improve the pacing, it will take them at least a decade to catch up if we get ~1 saga every 1.5 years

The Hat is his most personal possession, his greatest treasure. He put it on her head showing that he trusts her and values her.
It also means she is a straw hat pirate at her core
In the manga they make clearer why Luffy gives her his hat.
It's for two reasons:
-At this point in the manga, Luffy always took his hat off before fighting so it doesn't get blown everywhere by the fight (later he gets string for it to keep it on).
Patience is the key to watch one piece anime. Took time for me to watch it but i did 😂😂😂. Loved your reactions as always
This show hits you out of nowhere and gets so deep that it's engrossing
Quite a bit later in the story it gives a lot more insight to where the hate mongering and slaughtering of human goals of Arlong comes from.
18:24 actually literally, both his appearance and name, Nezumi is rat in japanese.
21:20 makes so much sense in the anime but the live action did what it have to to shorten the runtime ... the help me scene still spot on tho
11:15 : Captain Nezumi is a rat , his name "Nezumi" in japenese mean "rat". Oda love played with name. For example the mother of Nami et Nojiko is Belle-mere, in french "Belle-Mère" mean "Step Mother". Here the link to the same scene of Nami with Luffy in Anime , really good both : Luffy gives his hat to Nami - ruclips.net/video/dM0tpzY8nFc/видео.htmlsi=vSzXJurOaeikml7M

We're so close. Nami! love this show
Whats luffy most precious treasure? The hat is a simbol of thrust and nami unsrtood exactly what luffy meant by doing it
luffy trusts her fully, thats why he gave her the hat
Love the Hamtaro shirt!
the nami backstory is a little different from the original, but the basic concept still applies... having others know about the deal also mean Arlong could use them to have even more power over Nami
The hat is his treasure
friendship yay!
We all need a Luffy to in our life. To believe in us
Hamtaro sweater is so great
And after all these backstory, their backstories barely finish, like they show us Luffy back stories, we still don't know how he end up there and why he's not with his parents,
15:52 Gold roger is the pirate executed on ep1
i give you an important tipp for the future never forget the name gold roger...
8:31 Ding ding ding...
That said, watching the anime is something lots of react people do, and from than perspective, I suppose it's one way to guarantee having over 1000 more episodes of stuff to react to lol
As for the hat thing, I think they're showing us a couple things.
You would loooove the anime, it's more emotional than the Live Action
15:42 "Who is Gol D. Roger?" ;)
I was honestly surprised i got this far into the season without saying something like that
I like this version of Nami better she never abuses her own crew unlike in the anime she always constantly beats them up for doing stupid stuff
you should watch the anime you get even more backstories about each character.
Subbed. Just to wait if you're going to start the anime xD
Yeah berry conversion rate is about 100 to 1.
Hang on for a great finale! This series was so well done (gives me some hope for the Live Action Avatar The Last Airbender)
Same, SO excited for live action ATLA
she stab means she hate Arlong and herself for what happen.. Luffy give hat mean she is a "treasure".
Just for fun, watch Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation,
Anime soon?
Luffy gives nicknames to everyboby but his crew and family.
Shows Japanese so Berry is closer to Yen in valve. 100K berry = 700 bucks.
Hope to see an anime watchthrough. 😊
gold roger was the dude executed in the biginning first couple min of episode 1
It's funny because "nezumi" literally means "rat" in Japanese 🐀😂
Sanji does love the women kinda like Jiraiya or brock but more with more class
Emmeanime New channel?
Mezumi has the mouse mouse fruit
Just for context emme, gold Roger (or gol D. roger) was the pirate who garp executed in the first episode.
"who's Gold Roger?"
If you want to start the anime you need to at least watch 6 episodes a week
Make my day lady I'm having rough one we cry together
... the One... 19:03
the anime does so much in the way of context for most of these scenes. the live action is fun. but its a poor imitation of the genuine article. most people think this once they watch the anime and get to arlong park
One Piece fans like it when their old coots talk about the old days. xD
Do Nami's actions redeem her? I think there are very few in the fanbase who haven't forgiven her for what she went through. I hope you'll end up checking out either the manga or the anime, since they do a far better job at motivating everything about the circumstances and the decisions of every character involved.
Nezumi means mouse in Japanese.
❤
What if the One Piece is Luffy’s hat? 😮 jk it’s probably friendship or some allegory 🥺
You pay more attention than a lot of the fandom, Emme. That's all I'll say.
You gotta be kidding right??? How do you forget who Gold Roger is????
Nami's decision doesn't make sense, plain and simple. The source does it better by forcing her to make that decision since Arlong kidnapped her. Her volunteering is one of the changes that frustrates me in this adaption of this arc.
If 1000 episodes is too much, just read the manga. It's a lot faster and way better anyway.
The manga is one of the best stories ever, on par with stuff like LotR. The anime for the most part is kinda mid.
sometimes you could miss some details when you talk so maybe you could pay attention more. but Great reaction video.
You're right to feel confused why Nami didn't tell nojiko about it. One of the dumb changes they made and makes no sense.
There will be a anime reboot which will probably come out in 2025
There's not even a date yet & even then it is still gonna be seasonal, so, regardless of how much they improve the pacing, it will take them at least a decade to catch up if we get ~1 saga every 1.5 years
