You know why he dropped the ball? Couldn't concentrate.... Rose had a reputation for running over catchers. Bochy saw him coming around and freaked out just enough to bobble the play. As Pete rounded third the song from Johnny Cash started playing on Bochy's mind: "I here that train a comin... coming around that bend...."

People don't understand, Rose was betting on his team to win on Monday, and then NOT betting on the Tuesday game at all. He was managing the team and had control over who was playing, what relievers to use etc. The #1 rule posted inside every clubhouse was that one can not gamble on baseball. His doing it when he was the manager of the team undermines the very integrity of the game. If he had bet $100 to win on every game of the year, I could see an argument that he was just a gambling addict and shouldn't be banned. But that's not what he was doing. He was manipulating his bets based upon the knowledge that HE had about who would be playing. That is as bad as it gets. The Hall of Fame is the highest honor a player can receive. Obviously someone who undermined the credibility of the game should not receive baseball's highest honor.

      @@susanmeinhardt5557 Well said... I think this angle isn't well-understood.
This is still obviously a lesser-sin than betting *against* one's team or of taking a bribe to throw games... it could be argued that he just didn't have confidence enough with the personnel in the latter games to place a bet... breaking the rules either way - and so there's no excuse. But you're right, there's a progression of grievous sins: 1) betting on your team to win every game, 2) selectively betting on your team to win (but sometimes not), 3) betting on your team to win or sometimes your team to lose, 4) taking bribes and betting on your team to lose.
Per the rules posted, all of these were off-limits, though arguably #1 shouldn't be considered to impact the integrity of the game. #2 *could* be considered as not impacting, but it would be far more subjective a case...

Until Mike Schmidt really came to his own starting this 1980 season, I remember that Greg Luzinski was actually the BIGGER slugging star for the Phillies. He was the top NL votegetter for the 1978 All-Star Game, for instance. And he was the subject of more 1970's baseball magazine articles than Schmidt despite Schmidt's home run titles and great fielding, partly because Luzinski was a consistent .300 hitter with power in his best years with Phillies, at a time when high averages were really valued.
He had a bad 1980 season, which was his last with Philadelphia (started the season well, but injuries got to him). Still, I'm glad he had these 2 epic game-winning hits in the NLCS. His major contribution to their championship.

I wish we could have seen a good throw and collision. Bruce would have known that Rose was going to come in full force like he did with the all star game catcher. He might have got up a little and launched into him higher up instead of taking a cheap shot forearm like a pro wrestling match. Would have been spectacular.

I grew up with Pete Rose as an idol...but in retrospect his 'win at all cost' style of play was 'bush'. If he had shown some concern for the catcher(s) he bowled over, like at least asking if they were ok, then I'd say, "good play". But his lack of sportsmanship on the field was the same reason he was banned for gambling, His, "I didn't hurt anyone, I always bet on my team to win" attitude shows no regard for the damage to the sport or the other players that played the sport honestly. I saw him once signing/selling 'autographs' in a memorabilia store. Walked in, he was staring at a basketball game on a TV they had set up for him, never once acknowledging anyone that passed by him, probably worrying over a bet he made. He's not sorry he bet on baseball, only sorry he got caught.

Back when men were men. Even the commentators made light of that hard hit at the the plate. Now days, ESPN talk shows will say how violent and unnecessary that was. How Rose should be suspended indefinitely and the catcher should have received a cat scan before he was allowed to return. This is back when players smoked in the dugout, drank alcohol, wore spikes and cared about winning.
