Meet Carrie the tanker driver

What's it like as a woman working in a male dominated world? Meet Carrie Marsh from Marsh Fuels in Newbury. She runs her family business which is more than 100 years old. She even drives the tankers and delivers fuel to her customers.

I worked as a petrol tanker driver for 15yrs in the 80s/90s out of Purfleet Essex, did a few yrs on home deliveries with a six wheel bottom loader, loved the long hose pulls, thanks for posting brings back memories.

I never used to pull out the hose with 2 hands behind my back.If you stumble forward you will end up landing on your face.I always had one hand on the nozzle and one on the hose.so you can put out your hand if you fall.Enjoyed the job until Circus Energy (Certas) bought out the company i worked for in Exeter.

hgv 1 , full adr & driver cpc
at current rates probably looking at best part of £2000.
for £2000 there are a lot of other qualifications that can be done.
personally my experience of tankers is , 60hr + weeks for ok money but you deserve & earn every penny
most firms will expect
3x15hr & 2x 13 shifts.
the driver shortage only exists at crap firms , who usually treat drivers like crap because who would leave a good job in the first place .
however if you have the driving bug give it a shot

I have an HGV1 and ADR in tanks since 2008 and still can't find work. I paid a lot to get these qualifications. I feel so bitter I wasted my hard earned money for nothing.

Keep the faith. I had mine 5 years before I got a job. 10 years at it now. A lot of people find out it's not for them. Others find it's almost a vocation.

can you tell me which ADR course i need to drive this type truck? i have hgv class 2 rigid im not fussed about class 1 so is it just the 2-9 ADR course without tanker?

+adamjonathanbell just class 3 but you might as well do everything except 1 and 7 which is radioactive and explosives
