Hi Rob, I tried cutting dovetails about 12 months ago, and I would be embarrassed to show them to anyone. It was so bad I almost gave up. Then I bought your dovetail saw, watched your video and made near-perfect dovetails on my first attempt. Your saws and your methods are absolutely amazing. Also, I couldn't sharpen a plane blade or chisel to save my life until I watched your videos. I have only been into woodworking for a few years, but your channel has accelerated my learning and developed skills I would not have thought possible. Thank you for creating this wonderful content.
SO glad you are finding success, Thanks for commenting
"He who dies with the most tools wins!" I love it! I'm borrowing that!
Everything is a competetion!
I had the opportunity to try the Cosman, Lie-Nielson, and Florip dovetail saws back to back at the “Wood and Shop” woodworking school. As much as I wanted to prefer the less expensive saws, I kept coming back to the Cosman saw. I bought one and haven’t regretted that decision for a minute.
Thanks for the comment. I did not know he was doing that at his school. Glad he is.
I started handtool wood working in my garage 4 years ago. Was getting ready to retire and wanted a new hobby. By chance, I ran across Rob’s channel. And as a retired Marine, was drawn to the PHP. Four years later, I own one of each of Rob’s saws. I use them all and love them all! The 3/4 saws are especially welcomed for box making. I’ve got no experience with other saws so can’t speak to comparisons, but I give Rob and his products my 100% endorsement. I would buy them all again!
Very timely video as I (im)patiently await today's delivery of the two RC saws I won from the Jay Bates raffle to benefit PHP! And thanks so much for your extremely generous contribution to that raffle, Rob! (didn't even know you had done that!) But I'm excited - I've made a few dovetails using Japanese saws and saw guides that have turned out okay, but I can't wait to go full Cosman! Thanks for the history and saw breakdown ... and thanks especially for all you do.
You will not just enjoy. You will look forward to using it!
send us a pic of your first dovetail with my saws
That was a masterclass of a video. Had no idea there was so much going on with a "simple" hand saw. Putting a RC dovetail saw on my list for this year!
A very wise decision!!!
I have been looking at dovetail saws for a year since watching Rob’s videos have inspired me to grow my hand tool woodworking experience. There is a therapeutic element to using hand tools and I felt like that would be a way to gain better emotional stability in my life. I kept seeing other saws that were much less expensive and seemed to be comparable to the Cosman saws but the more I evaluated them, the competition never added up to the quality and function that Rob’s saws offer. I finally broke down and purchased the saw, and it arrived a couple days ago. I haven’t cut my first dovetail yet, but I can already tell it’s going to be awesome. Thank you, Rob, for your dedication to the craft and to the veteran community!
What a great comment. Thankyou. Please send us a pic of your first dovetail
For an "infomercial", so very informative! I've learned so much from your videos. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I've got a DT saw, and your crosscut and DANG THEY CUT BEAUTIFULLY!!!
Thanks for letting folks know
I have both a lie-neilsen and a cosman dovetail saw. The lie-neilsen is a great saw but the cosman saw was so much easier to learn with. You are much more likely to practice if you are getting decent results and the tool is easy to work with.
What he said!
You've come a long way Rob.
Its been an interesting ride for sure
I am saving up for the rip cut panel saw. I have the Cosman dovetail saw and it is awesome!
A good decision
Thank you for the masterclass on hand saws. This is mandatory viewing for anyone who wants to use handsaws. Thank you for sharing. Take care!
Thanks Kent
Nice, have repaired and built saws in my shop years back. Thanks!
I got a pair of old Sorby backsaws from auction when I first got into hand tools, but compared to old planes I wouldn't recommend refurbishing them from the get go. From what I understand spring steel degrades, and the major effort had me slightly disappointed once I compared them to a new Cosmon saw-it's a night and day difference. They have *the* best handles if you want a saw with weight.
Outstanding video. Loved the format with the history and evolution of design and purpose!
Glad you enjoyed it!
THANK YOU I LEARNED A LOT. IBROUGHT SOME JAPANESE SAW BUT THEY ARE VERY DIFFICULT FOR ME TO USE THEM MAYBE AGE (72) OR/AND HOW I WAS TAUGHT (MUSCLE MEMORY). I GOT TO GET YOU RECONMENDATION OF SAWS.
He who dies with the most tools win! Hahaha going for the win. We are going to miss the hair Rob. I'm happy to get a bone handle DT saw for my collection. Don't stop innovating Rob & team. Cheers
Thats a collectors piece!
Man, what a great illustration!
Glad you like it!
I have 4 Rob Cosman backsaws, and they are all used extensively for joinery. But I have been struggling with cutting down rough stock using various handsaws I've accumulated over the years. I finally found a couple of great Crown handsaws with rip teeth a few years ago (5 tpi and 9 tpi), which work very well for ripping down my stock to rough size. But I have yet to find a decent crosscut saw that will give me good crosscuts in dense hardwoods like maple or walnut. This is the first I've heard of your panel saw offerings! I will be ordering your crosscut saw today.
Thanks. Let me know what you think after putting it to the test
Thank you for creating this wonderful content. I just wish I could afford them but Thank you for the video and your teaching is excellent
Glad you like them!
Wow, very nice.
Glad you like it!
This is probably gonna be sacrilegious for some folks lol.
I own 1 *good* saw, the Rob Cosman Dovetail Saw. Its the 1 saw that I grab on nearly every cut that needs to be perfect.
I should really buy a couple more lol
I agree...you should !
Is that a sabot round next to your drillpress, or am I just really ignorant to what woodworking tools are used by pros?
I saw a little trick with back saws, occasionally the blade will be curved, to fix this, turn the saw over and bang the brass on your work bench and it straightens out the blade. More specific t o gent saws but it will work with any saw that has a back.
any experience with that rob ?
These are very beautiful saws. If I were a woodworker I'd definitely buy some... I'm actually restraining myself, since I occationally do some wood work.
well you could start doing more woodworking! Christmas is coming you know!
"He who dies with the most tools wins..." Bwaaaahahaha Nice :) One of these days I'll get me one of your dovetail saws and learn to do dovetails. Just picked up a WR 5 1/2 FINALLY and love it. way better than the 4 1/2 old Stanley Bailey I restored. Yer right, its my 'go-to' plane now :) Hope everyone is well in your neck of the woods :)
Try my saw you will never go back
One these days I'm gonna aquire your panel saw!!
Why wait. We have them ready for you
@RobCosmanWoodworking hard times, one day soon though. Great breakdown video. Been wanting a panel since I seen you started making em
Hi Rob, i own a few of your saws and plan on adding your panel saw set to them. Quick question. In regards to your brass back saws, is the bench joinery saw the only one that doesn't have the starter teeth and if so why is that? Thank you
None of the crosscuts, teeth have a relaxed angle of attack that makes it easy to push. Different style of cut.
I am looking to start making small boxes, for jewelry, game pieces, cards, for pencils, and art brushes, etc.
Would you still recommend those 3 saws, or would those 2 smaller saws with the dovetail saw be better?
Stuff I would like to make is definitely no bigger than mans jewelry box you showed. Might be even smaller.
So a 3/4 dovetail saw is for cutting wood 3/8 an inch thick and less, the regular dovetail saw is for bigger than that. Can you cut joints in wood 3/8 and less with a regular DT saw? Yes of course but the 3/4 is a bit easier in smaller wood.
Can you cut thicker wood with a 34 saw? Yes up to no larger than 3/4 thick but its slower and you cannot go as deep.
Generally speaking…if you can inly get one I would get the regular saw
@@RobCosmanWoodworking thank you so much for the answer!
If you’re new to hand cutting joints but haven’t gotten into dovetails, (so far I’ve been trying mitred bridal joints) what saw would you recommend?
We still recommend the standard dovetail saw. Its a fine toothed rip cut. Most cuts in joinery are rip cuts. Even though its filed rip, you can crosscut with it, it just will not be as quick and clean a cut as a dedicated crosscut saw
How do your saws perform for lefties? And issues with the handles?
Perfect. Handles are swing hitters! Work the same left or right handed
Good demonstration of differences
Glad you liked it
One day I will own a Rob Cosman saw.
No time like the present
How do you set the teeth on your saws
DO you mean us or do you mean when you need to reset the teeth?
Aside from saws, I wonder, what that anti armour round does in your shop...
Looks interesting. The shell was given to me by Al who works for us. Former tank commander. The sabot is turned from wood
This makes sense of those old saws 4TPI. My father asked if I was a man or a mouse😂
Yup, in the time before power saws a sawyer would easily carry around 8 - 16 saws all with different teeth and tooth configurations. A 4 TPI saw was a brute of a saw fir hacking up lumber. Not pretty cuts but fast (if you had the arm muscle)
I had to settle for the Japanese style because the price of the fine western saws is ridiculous.
Good video!! I think you should make a second video on how to set the teeth and how to use file and which file will be the proper to use .
You need a new haircut....it is growing very fast , it's the air, the food?
Dam, you missed the haircut!
So we have several You tubes on saw sharpening rip and crosscut. Working on one reference jointing now
Haaa , i have seen the hair cut!! That was a good video with great tips!
The small file that you are selling is perfect!!!! I have already used it once!
That hair grew quick since his haircut on 3rd Feb 😂😂😂😂
We have about three more videos in the pipe with the long hair version
21 is the earliest comment I can get? Ugh. I should try harder.
I really like my RC panel saws.
Thanks for commenting
$275 For a dovetail saw! Come on Rob.
Compared to the North American manufactured premium dovetail saws (Bad Axe and Lie Nielsen) we are in th emiddle of th epack on price. Top of the pack on design.
Worth every penny. I have had RC dovetail saw for almost 2 years and love it. When I went to Handworks in September 2023 I was able to test drive dovetail saws (as well as cross cut and tenon saws) from Lie-Nielsen, Bad Axe and Blue Spruce. None of them are as easy to start and they don’t cut as fast. It reinforced my decision to get the RC dovetail saw so much that when I got home from Handworks I immediately ordered the RC joinery cross cut and medium tenon saws. I love all three of them. Thanks @RobCosmanWoodworking.
I thought Fricks name was Rick and you were just razzing him by saying it wrong..😬
Nope..his name is Frick….
First comment!😂
You get 3 stars!!!!
This is why it is so dangerous to watch your channel..... The problem with these saws is getting them resharpened. Not sure I would trust myself to do it well. I do know you need to make sure the set is good as well.
Saw sharpening is an incredibly easy skill. So many woodworkers are intimidated by it buts its seriously easy....almost cannot screw it up. Setting and jointing a saw is slightly harder but they are not difficult and if you start out with a new saw you should not have to re-set or re-joint it for 5-10 years (hobby woodworker)
Well, I can sharpen my chain saw, and that took a bit. Do you sell the files and tooth set thing? I am still pretty much a hobbyist, but do spend a lot of time in my shop. Less on the lathe now, and more on flat work...
I have the same set of “history lane” saws purchased over same years. Same story on sharpening stones: oil, water, shapton. I should have started wood working later in life. Would have saved a lot of meh and grief.
I know exactly how you feel
