@@RobCosmanWoodworking The tool chest is probably a little ways off for the time being. We only recently moved into our new house so right now the workshop is basically a tool storage room. The first project is obviously to make a workbench. On that note, can I use OSB to make the Cosman workbench, or is plywood the only way to go?
Rob is so knowledgable and has a great willing to share his knowledge and skills with everyone. Their shipping is amazing I placed an order on Friday and It was in my hands in the U.S. on Monday through the mail no less. I was very impressed.

Good one Rob. I do, as I can tell you do, immediately look at what I would do differently next time. I would run the router plane for a little more gap where the saw teeth are, and if it was a stationary cabinet, not travel box, I would increase the gap altogether for ease of inserting the saw. Thanks for all you do for the vets, and to pass on your knowledge.
Thank you Rob! If I can suggest a small trick to draw the shape of the saw handle: take a piece of paper/cardboard, cut with a pair of scissors a rough curve and place it near the handle. Then put the pencil into a washer and follow the curve of the handle!

Try it. Its pretty easy
Just finished mine and I really like them! (made 5) They were fitted to a pull out tray. I thought long and hard about how to pivot them since they were going to be horizontal, then had the idea of just adding stops, front and back to pull the saw out and then inserting them back in. Added a divider on the side to keep them in place. I added a 1/4" plywood strip to the side of each one to give clearance and stability to each holster. Wish I could add my short video clip to this comment to show what I did. THANKS for this video! It was a nice exercise and addition to my workbench!
Ever since seeing you show those off I’ve been curious to see how you did it. Pretty simple once you see how but the devil is in the details. That is the best way of storing back saws I’ve ever seen and definitely one of the cleverest. Thank you for sharing that. Just one more example of the excellent person you are. Kudos to Jake too for the great camera work for what must have been difficult to film without being in the way. You guys do an outstanding job and make a great team.

I just finished up my tool cabinet a couple of weeks ago, looks like a modification is in order. I love the tilt out idea much better than hanging my saws flat.

I started with 8/4 and ripped the top (above the spine/back) off. Then flipped the "new" top upside down on the table saw. Then I could cut the blade clearance tall and saw back lower. Then glued the top back on. This gave the front face no glue up seams.

Hi Rob, do you have build videos for the tool cabinet? Or maybe plans?
Maybe instead of a washer you could just shave down the long sides that rub. Start plane just above the pivot reference surface and run it down a few times. Should reduce the friction enough to never overcome it and pull one with it. I’m tempted to add steep champers to the top and sides to make it even easier to slide the saw in and make it look less like a simple block. Thank you for showing us this!

Rob, what kind of bench is that? Sjobergs?
Two questions - do the saws saw through the blocks over time/any reason to consider mounting the blocks with the saws upside down so they ride in/out on their backs? How tight was the clearance for the teeth/If you wanted to make the saw set wider in the future would that be an issue?
I have had zero issue with that
Personally would have them flat on the base to stop things (like pencils) hiding under them. To allow them to still pivot either radius the corner or put and 45 degree or whatever angle which would also give you a forced stop point
personally I just used neodymium magnets to hold the saws almost flat to the wall
Rob, I've been using mine for about a year and still love them everytime I pull a saw out or return it. It's so easy to get the saw into it's protected home that they don't end up laying around on the bench.
The only problem is one till is empty, waiting for a small dovetail saw 😁.

Do you think rubbing a thin coat of wax on inside of saw holster before assembly would ease insertion to allow gradual even wearing?
Always enjoy the how to vids on how you set things up. How about running two rods through, 1 for the pivot, and the other as the stop. Coming from the front face up from the bottom, make a notch to rest on the second pin. It would depend on how wide one's tool case is for the location of the notch and stop pin.👍
Perfect timing I have 4 Cosman saws this will be my next project. By the way my only regret with the Cosman saws is I bought them all with the same handle so it sometimes takes a couple of tries to get the one I want
You could try labeling the front of the sleeve. I think a profile of the teeth inlayed in a contrasting wood could be nice. Changing the length/height of the inlay to communicate the fineness of the teeth too.

Hi many thanks for the videos I have made 4 for my Cosman saw set. I made them out of oak and I think that is a mistake as soon as I put them in the tills, approx a week later the brass backs have gone a strange colour, I would say wire wool but a week later same thing. Assume oak not a great idea, any guidance on best wood to use that will not interact with brass backs?

A wonderful build. The washers could be countersunk to reduce the space.
Personally, I think I'd have washers on the end pieces as well.
I'd probably prefer having a non-saw holster as the rightmost holster, just to get more room for the 'grabbing' hand.
The front space could be used for dovetail guides, since those are related to the dovetail saws.
Advanced exercise / challenge: The holsters could be moved closer to the cabinet bottom (actually below the bottom), if you hollow out the bottom; this could be combined with rounding the bottom of the holster. The most important thing to do is to make the hollowing rounded in case you choose to try this.
Very fancy and looks cool. Not sure if I want to go this way or just build a simple saw till.
I'd be tempted to use a hole saw to punch several holes sideways thru each holster to make the assembly weigh less.
Washer cut out of a milk jug will work better than metal and are thinner

If the holster butted up to the back wall of the cabinet maybe add a small magnet to the back wall (or on the bottom on the stop block) and a washer on the back of the scabbard to hold them upright. Also, doesn't the height of the user and the mounting height of the holster in relation to the user affect how far you want the saw to tip out?
Will these not lead to rust on the blades due to the steel being against wood on both sides?
Pull a nail out of a board after a few years, no rust!
If you place the saws w the tines away from you, covered or not, you won't get cut.

I’m interested to know what brand of router plane you are using for the groove. Looks like the Canadian made Veritas but with the upright knobs it resembles the Veritas knockoff produced in the U.S. by Katz-Moses.

When possible, chamfer the openings to tool slots. Funneling that tool to slide back into place is so nice.
Like the tilt out idea Rob. If I can’t use it for saws probably other tools. I’m gearing up to restore an old tool chest and tools👍

May I make a suggestion?
Start with a board that is 1 & 1/8 inches thick, lay it flat on the table saw with the 12" edge against the fence and cut a 1/2 inch strip off (to be glued back on later).
Fit a tall fence to the table saw, set the blade height to about 1", run the board on its edge over the table saw, flip the board end-for-end and run it through again to get a centred slot. Check that the slot is wide enough for the handsaw blade, and if not, move the fence over and repeat until it is. Raise the table saw blade and repeat until the slot is deep enough for the handsaw blade.
Once the slot is wide enough and deep enough for the handsaw blade, drop the table saw blade height to the thickness of the brass back (7/8"), move the fence over and widen the slot to take the brass back. Test the fit and adjust the width as necessary until the saw slides in easily.
Glue the 1/2" strip back on to the edge and plane smooth.
Great idea. Try it and let me know how it goes
What do you do if the wood swells in humidity? I think I would prefer to have plenty of clearance between the sides of the saw blade and the wood to prevent coming along and finding the blade trapped by swollen wood.... or worse, pitted with rust.
Wouldn't it help to apply a finish of some kind [even if just wax] to the inner surfaces before assembly?
I think, if I were to make these...I might join the two halves with countersunk machine screws and nuts, rather than glue. Could also make cleaning things very simple if some sort of contaminant got down in the slot - let's assume it might be grandkids.

Well I have been using mine, unfinished, for years and no issues. If i applied finish i would only do it on the outside.
Love that there are wood shavings scraps of wood, cut offs and sawdust all around the shop. If these are requirements for a good shop I’m partially there! On a different note just bought a dovetail saw after using dozuki saw for years.

I’ve liked your saw till concept since I started watching your videos. I had guessed at how they’re made, but it’s better to know precisely. My hand saws are currently residing in a toolbox drawer, not the best for quick/good access, but they are safe at least. I’m planning to build a tool cabinet in the next year, and this will be my solution for saw storage. Thanks for another high quality video, Rob and crew.

You could also put a magnet on the back of each holster and matching screw in the case to prevent the saws from coming forward when you choose a different saw.

What do you feel about using a rabbet plane instead of a router plane for this Rask?
I prefer the router plane since its designed to make a level plane parrallel to a surface. Rabbet planes are not designed to do that

Well I definitely need a way to protect my saws, been hoping for this video. But I don’t have a table saw or a router plane. So I could try a chisel or some sort of guide with a palm router. I’ll have a think. Will practice with softwood first. Is that the LN large router plane? Probably hard to get at the moment.
Search RUclips for how to make your own router plane. I made one and loved it so much that I bought a "proper" one on eBay.

Very nice. Why not put a radius on the corner around the pivot point to provide clearance. That way the holster could sit flat on the cabinet base.
You can if you dont want to use the corner as a stop. Try it
