No, Cody always intended to return to WWE and become the top champion there, he was using AEW and Tony saw and it and did the right thing letting him go.
Yes, AEW became difficult to watch unless ur a super Indy fan u don’t know who any of these ppl are and since Cody has left there’s not many ppl at the top with an untouchable big match story telling him presence . The last guy to spike numbers on rampage was cody Rhodes vs Sammy. IWC will say Kenny’s a better wrestler I don’t give a shit Bc Cody put drew him even when Kenny was the main champion and Kenny isn’t drawing the numbers Cody drew not even punk did as consistently. Lastly the backstage became so toxic without Cody.
Tony did make a mistake in letting Cody leave because it looked like Cody wanted to be involved in everything and took the EVP title seriously but in the end it worked out for him. People were concerned Sami's popularity would cause fans to turn on Cody and he's still getting cheered

I'm not going to lie, I didn't realize how much of an Impact Cody had on the going ons at AEW. It feels like things went crazy after he left. Now I can't wait to see him win the title at Mania 👍🏻
The problem with Cody in AEW became a lot about the self-imposed ceiling he had. He couldn’t challenge for the title so he would perpetually be in the mid card/upper mid card. The only way out of that would have been for him to turn heel and he very clearly didn’t want to do that. Then the issues just built from there. His presentation was heelish, and he would always defeat the exciting newcomers once they arrived. The difference in presentation when he went from AEW to WWE is night and day. He used to be that when AEW started, but that ended once he lost the matches to Jericho and MJF and was left unable to challenge for the title ever again to boot. You could write a book about all of this. Glad he’s got back on track.
DDP is speaking facts 100%. I can see Cody win at Mania, both belts raised up high, New face of WWE. This could be a problem for Tony. Tony made the biggest mistake back in 2021-22, cause if Cody is the face for what Tony calls “the competition” , then a lot of the AEW guys (who are not former WWE guys) will lol at it and say “man the guy who was here from the very beginning of AEW’s creation/inception is now the face for WWE, I should really rethink my choice when my contract is ending”. I just don't understand how it all fell apart with Cody in AEW. He helped get several great wrestlers over... still crazy that he was never AEW World champion.
It was never Tony's fault. First, Cody book himself to never challenge for title then he had his Anthony agogo and QT feud. The thing is, we don't know what was happening behind close doors and even DDP don't know the real situation. What was Cody's demands or what he wanted. Maybe he left because Cody thought he could be bigger in wwe. But the thing is Cody could have been same way over in aew only if he did not tried to be john Cena. Even john Cena embraced the boos which Cody couldn't, he wanted to be cheered while failing to realize that he was in a roman reigns situation where crowd knew that his character would be far better if he turns heels. Does anyone remember when he used to fake going into heel tunnel? Crowd used to cheer him momentarily. In wwe, he's a fresh act so he's getting cheered which also happened with him in the starting years of AEW.
U can have all the money in the world and he’s burning through a lot of it . Tony needs a booker that can write tv. Tony is an ROH matches fan boy, it’s not for everyone
It wasn't entirely Tony's call now, was it? Should we blame DDP for Stevie Richards' back infection? Cody told Stone Cold point blank, he wanted the prestige of the WWE belt. No amount of of Khan money would have gotten him that. Also, while everyone here is busy praising Cody's booking, he booked himself into a corner with that stipulation about not contending for the belt anymore, he or himself in a gatekeeper roll, then resented being "just a gatekeeper"
Im glad Cody left his mentality is one of a snake. He puts himself in certain positions, and then when he doesn't like the outcome, he goes crawling back to those allegedly wronged him
Cody leaving, CM Punk getting attacked, It's like AEW doesn't watch big stars. Moxely and Jericho may have been Champs but never THE guy but always the transitional champions for the bigger guy.
I imagine it was more the fact that when he contract came up, cody asked for more (everyone came to him backstage when problems arose) as well as a significant position in regards to how things are booked. Tony probably balked at the idea and cody simply decided it was better to take a chance on himself in the wwe rather than stick his neck out for someone who thinks they know it all aka Tony Khan.
The AEW fans turned on Cody, he was trying be Captain America in a Gotham that has Moxley as Batman. He was "1st" match, 1st cage match, 1st TNT champ, 1st 2x champ, 1st dog collar match, 1st intergender match. Not to mention Brandy was on TV way too much which made the fans loathe him. Cody had to leave AEW cos the fans were just over him and he knew it.
Cody saved himself because he saw AEW couldn't save itself. They chose to go from a wrestling company to a billionaires backyard wrestling with his buddies
OmEgo and FBucks & The Cosplaying Wrestling Buddies are in it for themselves. Khan had so much great talent but sidelines them for a guy who puts his hands in his pockets.
Jericho did Sammy no favors. I truly feel Sammy could have gotten himself over without him. If anything I think Sammy being involved with him for so long has been a detriment.
Im really torn, im cool if cody wins, but i want roman to win, i like watching and seeing him climb to that spot. He is undeniable as a top champ, but he does the chase better
I think tony is a fool for letting cody go. Cody was a pillar of that company, that was keeping everything together now look what's going on backstage with aew and their drama. He helped put aew on the map, why let him leave to WWE?
the problem is and ppl may hate to hear it, he left wwe when he wasnt the top guy, and then left aew cuz he wasnt being the top guy anymore, so ya now wwe he is but whats gonna happen when hes not anymore, and we know vince is back and he gets bored of ppl or stops pushing them, is he just gonna leave again when he gets unhappy, you start to get a rep after a while, and I know he didnt see staying in aew but he helped build it and then just gave up on it, I'm happy hes doing good now but he could have done things diff in aew and if he didnt see working with those guys then he shouldnt have picked them to run the company
I'm led to believe Cody left AEW on good terms with Tony Khan. Maybe he'll come back to AEW someday and get a huge pop for his return, then compete for the AEW championship.
Agree 100% with everything DDP said. With that being said, the best thing to happen to Cody Rhodes was returning to WWE. AEW has completely nosedived since his and Punk's departure.
I believe in MJF. The ratings dip is unfortunate but my gut feeling was Punk was always going to be overshadowed by Max coming into his prime whether casuals saw it or not.
When I said "nosedived" I was actually talking about the quality of product. But yes they're also down 200k give or take barring any "special announcements" or non-existent "dream matches". With that being said, if you enjoy the product then more power to you.
The issue was Cody simply wanted to win the title but booked himself into a corner as at first he didn't think he wanted it. Its why the TNT championship was always around his waist. But that title wasnt enough for him sadly and he moved on back to WWE where he could be a champion. that 1 match IMO sealed his AEW fate. But AEW is still as strong as it was when he was there and as great as he was in the back the crowd simply got sick of him winning that belt.
We'll never know what really happened, but my best guess is that Cody wanted part ownership or a very high level management position and Tony wasn't willing to budge. This was a MAJOR blunder for AEW tho. There is no way to spin losing one of the creators of this company within 3 years as a positive, especially when he is now main eventing WM the next year and about to be a major face for their competition. Tony should have given Cody what he wanted. He was a major positive impact behind the scenes at AEW for locker room morale and WAY better at the PR than Tony could ever hope to be. Its such a bad fuck up that it caused a ripple effect that had AEW basically fall the fuck apart backstage over the last year and to be honest, I don't know if I believe that AEW will ever bounce back. This is it for them. They the professional indy fed and that's where they are going to stay barring a god damn miracle at this point.
Cody didn't want to be an executive, he wanted to be a wrestler and he wanted to be world champion. He wanted to be THE guy that would bring down WWE but when he couldn't do that he realized he could be the world champion in WWE instead, something he always wanted before he was forced to build up and go against them.
Cody's been playing chess, while others are playing checkers. Still waiting on the, "You haven't seen nothing yet," payoff before leaving AEW. I don't believe the jump to WWE was it. Chess, not checkers. 🤔
OK first of all this idea that WWE is using a storyline that “Dusty Rhodes never won the world championship” is complete bullshit. Dusty Rhodes was a three time NWA world champion back when that title meant more than the bill that WWF was using to advertise Hulk Hogan. And let’s not forget that WWE can’t pretend like they don’t recognize that title win the same gold belt that Dusty wore beating Ric Flair at Starrcade what is a Championship in the WWE’s for years. Acting like any title today in any promotion, it means more than the NWA world title in the 80s melt is laughable . As far as Tony losing Cody Rhodes, that was the moment that really showed me what the people that were fairly criticizing AEW for we’re validated. Being an online wrestling book or doesn’t mean shit. Because how do you tell if you’re doing a good job or not? You’re not really drawing paying customers. I had such high hopes for a EW when they first came out and when they came out I realized it was just like every other wrestling promotion that had came out since 2002 except this one had enough money to buy time on the turner networks and could hand out fat contracts. But they were making the same mistakes that Tn a and ROH made over and over again just on a bigger scale and then when you give a handful of guys, the title of Executive Vice President and those same guys are also coincidently at the top of the company and Cody Rhodes has a better wrestling mine then all of them put together and we’ve seen that AEW his kind of already hit its peak and it’s flattened out it’s not going to ever get any better than it is, I don’t blame Cody for leaving. I hate that there isn’t a good wrestling company for Cody to go to but given the choice is he has I think WWE’s is the best place for him to go.
16:02 Huh...I guess when you think about it, it is to a lesser extent a similar situation, only what's even worse is that Tony Khan might also get rid of Punk, which is his Hogan, imagine WCW losing Hogan in the late 90's.
Wrestlers go other places all the time. This was the best time for Cody to go to WWE. This will happen more especially since AEW is not the happy go circ and jerk they let on to be.
I disagree. Cody would never reach the success in AEW that he is having in WWE, the fanbases are completely different and Cody connects with the younger WWE fans. it wasn't like TK fired him, Cody wanted to go for that WWE title, that meant more than any amount of money or booking that TK could offer him.
@@lothar71 true but that doesn't change that the way he has connected with WWE's fanbase wouldn't happen with the AEW fanbase. It's not a knock on either company.

Well you're wrong
@@darrengordon-hill who's side was the crowd he was on tn? Yeah, your comment makes a lot of sense, idiot
@@davidholzer4155 My point exactly. Fuck, I've been a Cody Rhodes Fan since I watched him take on King Booker at a house show on August 4th, 2007 at wesbanco arena & Cody was super over then too. It's only when WWE steps in to change him that he starts losing momentum, just like tn
I just don't understand how it all fell apart with Cody in AEW. He helped get several great wrestlers over... still crazy that he was never AEW World champion.
Its because he is gonna be compared to 2000s jarrett if that happened. A founder as a champ will be bad for business. Remember that
It was never Tony's fault.
I give all the wrestlers involved in Aew’s beginnings their props, but none of it works without Tony Khans infinite money supply.
yup.. but if he wasnt surrounded by good wrestling heads like Cody, he would've just been another money throwing promoter.
Plot twist, Triple H screws over Cody as payback for the Throne Smash
It's funny how a nickname can just stick immediately like super glue. I call my youngest "young bones" don't remember why lol it just stuck
And the guy Cody beat...was Xavier Woods 😅
CODY DOES NOT SELL TICKETS
Imagine choosing to go with "The Elite" over Cody F'n Rhodes....
long live DDP!
COOL TO SEE DDP PROVING MY CM PUNK VIDEO RIGHT.
Ok, who played the prank on DDP that wearing a hat like that is "hip"? 🤣🤣
Im glad Cody left his mentality is one of a snake. He puts himself in certain positions, and then when he doesn't like the outcome, he goes crawling back to those allegedly wronged him
LA Knight could wipe the floor with MJF if he had more leeway.
He looks like a star too, not a midget Squidward tentacles
😂😂😂
@@RealTakerslady keep your goofy emoji faces to yourself, incel.
easily
I mean considering DDP was trained by Dusty and trained Cody, his opinion isn't difficult to guess on this one
Cody leaving, CM Punk getting attacked, It's like AEW doesn't watch big stars. Moxely and Jericho may have been Champs but never THE guy but always the transitional champions for the bigger guy.
DDP is sounding like Bam Margera
They didn’t forget who he was, they wanted him to turn heel and he wanted to stay in the Cody Verse. He was like Cena, the person ppl loved to hate.
Cody sucks. Cena rules.
I always thought it was Cody's idea to leave because he booked himself to never get another shot at the AEW title after he lost
i never understood the logic of that..
Exactly like why would you do that to urself? Lol
Could have easily undone that with a decent run of promos or a heel turn. Very simple.
@@joshuarobinson25 Cody is a selfless guy who gets that pushing other people is a trait people need to have in the business.
Clickbait title but good interview
The AEW fans turned on Cody, he was trying be Captain America in a Gotham that has Moxley as Batman. He was "1st" match, 1st cage match, 1st TNT champ, 1st 2x champ, 1st dog collar match, 1st intergender match. Not to mention Brandy was on TV way too much which made the fans loathe him. Cody had to leave AEW cos the fans were just over him and he knew it.
BASED!!!
Returning to WWE like some "conquering hero" when in reality, he ran home like a scolded dog
AEW fans sucks
hate cody and love orange cassidy
aew fans = Worst fans in the history of professional wrestling
Cody saved himself because he saw AEW couldn't save itself. They chose to go from a wrestling company to a billionaires backyard wrestling with his buddies
i agree with ddp that tony letting cody go was like eric bischoff firing stone cold from wcw
OmEgo and FBucks & The Cosplaying Wrestling Buddies are in it for themselves. Khan had so much great talent but sidelines them for a guy who puts his hands in his pockets.
16:18 Dallas is great and ain’t lying
Great interview. Awesome stories. Clickbait headline.
DDP sounds more like a proud uncle
How can one not love DDP ! ? That's rhetorical, btw.
As much as I don’t like Khan I don’t think this is his fault..I think Cody had his eyes on the title and was leaving no matter what
Totally agree with DDP! Big big mistake
Jericho did Sammy no favors. I truly feel Sammy could have gotten himself over without him. If anything I think Sammy being involved with him for so long has been a detriment.
Sammy g has a bad rep these days because of what happened in the past. He is a dangerous especially when the stips are no dq.
Ummmm I would say Court Bauer discovered MFJ. Cody seen what MFJ was doing because of his work in MLW
HHH Promised long term storytelling, they don't get much longer than this.
wait is he still using his production company for aew?
Cody really should've beaten Ortonville youngest world champion record and been pushed better from the start
Not losing if a contract expired, can't make someone sign a new deal Diamond. New company same Cody.
the problem is and ppl may hate to hear it, he left wwe when he wasnt the top guy, and then left aew cuz he wasnt being the top guy anymore, so ya now wwe he is but whats gonna happen when hes not anymore, and we know vince is back and he gets bored of ppl or stops pushing them, is he just gonna leave again when he gets unhappy, you start to get a rep after a while, and I know he didnt see staying in aew but he helped build it and then just gave up on it, I'm happy hes doing good now but he could have done things diff in aew and if he didnt see working with those guys then he shouldnt have picked them to run the company
Vince is not back in creative and plus dude said he was gonna retire after this contract with wwe
I'm led to believe Cody left AEW on good terms with Tony Khan. Maybe he'll come back to AEW someday and get a huge pop for his return, then compete for the AEW championship.
Nah, DDP knows better than anyone else. He is his mentor after all.
but all that knowledge is wasted. Cody set his foot on FIRE b/c he thought it would be epic??? Real deep thought there.
Agree 100% with everything DDP said. With that being said, the best thing to happen to Cody Rhodes was returning to WWE. AEW has completely nosedived since his and Punk's departure.
Except that's not 100% true they are at the same place they were
I believe in MJF. The ratings dip is unfortunate but my gut feeling was Punk was always going to be overshadowed by Max coming into his prime whether casuals saw it or not.
@@josiah1218 Minus 200,000 fans every week Punk isn't on air and that's backed by the ratings record.
When I said "nosedived" I was actually talking about the quality of product. But yes they're also down 200k give or take barring any "special announcements" or non-existent "dream matches". With that being said, if you enjoy the product then more power to you.
@@MrDubwise the quality of the matches are definitely not the problem
Tony Khan screwed up,
He should've been backing Cody, CM Punk and FTR instead of Omega, Hangman and Bucks.
Tony Khan is gonna lose his company if he doesn't smarten up.
Cody kicked his grandad off the seat for DDP thats so awesome 🤣🤣🤣💀
The issue was Cody simply wanted to win the title but booked himself into a corner as at first he didn't think he wanted it. Its why the TNT championship was always around his waist. But that title wasnt enough for him sadly and he moved on back to WWE where he could be a champion. that 1 match IMO sealed his AEW fate. But AEW is still as strong as it was when he was there and as great as he was in the back the crowd simply got sick of him winning that belt.
The aew championship would have never meant anything to cody

But Tony wouldn't let other people out of their contracts. Tony's not noble.

Yeah about that……..
There are hundreds of reasons to criticize that money mark. The basement dwellers cannot see that.
Answer the question.......15 mins later.....
It blows my mind how crazy wrestling fans are. Aew fans looked at him as spoiled and lazy I guess. I never understood why he got so much hate there.
These comments are like a time capsule
Holy shit DDP worked you and lied so many times. Cody discovered MJF? No, not even close.
DAMN, Diamond isn't aging well. Maybe more yoga
Yeah “not aging well” for someone who’s 66 years old.
Riiiiight 🙄🙄🙄
Tony Khan picked coke over Cody Rhodes
Roman needs to go over at mania sorry but Cody should have to struggle before winning.
16:02 Huh...I guess when you think about it, it is to a lesser extent a similar situation, only what's even worse is that Tony Khan might also get rid of Punk, which is his Hogan, imagine WCW losing Hogan in the late 90's.
Cody is mid.
Tony Khan's Master Plan: Let him go back to WWE, WWE will overpush him, WWE business collapses with Cody on top.
We don't need Cody, it was all a money thing, AEW has enough talent, to much for just 3 hours of TV. I love AEW and thank you Tony Khan for AEW
looks like wwe doesnt want cody either
Wrestlers go other places all the time. This was the best time for Cody to go to WWE. This will happen more especially since AEW is not the happy go circ and jerk they let on to be.
I disagree. Cody would never reach the success in AEW that he is having in WWE, the fanbases are completely different and Cody connects with the younger WWE fans. it wasn't like TK fired him, Cody wanted to go for that WWE title, that meant more than any amount of money or booking that TK could offer him.
The only reason he's where he is in WWE is because of AEW.
@@lothar71 true but that doesn't change that the way he has connected with WWE's fanbase wouldn't happen with the AEW fanbase. It's not a knock on either company.
