That's one of the roles that landed him a part in Family Guy. Before this, he hadn't done comedy on TV yet, save for a few corny bits in TNG that looked absolutely horrible (not his fault though). And in turn, seeing that Stewart could do both serious drama and over-the-top comedy, Saulnier decided to approach him with the script for Green Room, to see if he could be scary as well.
It's interesting to note that this came between season 7 and 8, because the humor really recaptures the vibe of series' 5 and 6. The sharp one liners and the cast having their characters completely perfected.
I remember watching this when it aired. At the time, Can't Cook Won't Cook was on ALL THE TIME (it ran for a mind-boggling 685 episodes in the space of 5 years) so this skit seemed entirely normal. Now, after 23 years, having not seen Can't Cook Won't Cook in over two decades, this is among the more bizarre things I've ever seen. Of all the things to do with the Red Dwarf crew, having them participate in a now obscure 90s cooking show seems like the most off the wall bonkers idea.
I get the feeling that when the BBC tasked them with filling an entire night with Red Dwarf related content, they started scraping the barrel pretty early. Given that the other programmes were a painfully bad Dwarf themed University Challenge episode and a commentary/documentary called 'The Red Dwarf A-Z' (G is for GELF, R is for Rimmer), I think you can tell how much padding they had to do. Which other BBC shows from the time could they have used, though? They couldn't build any new sets or anything
Something about Chloe Annett in a constant state of "Oh god now what" keeps making me laugh. And that rice switch at 21:29 onwards was absolutely perfect 🤣🤣
It was broadcast way back in 1998. I remember I was at school looking forward to it all day, Red Dwarf night lol. I think it was broadcast inbetween series seven and eight.
Only the red dwarf crew could upstage Ainsley, only Ainsley could upstage the red dwarf crew... perfect... I love how Clare looks genuinely concerned for the boys at times!
Listening to Patrick Stewart talk shit about Red Dwarf is the best thing I have ever heard x'D Not because I dislike Red Dwarf - I adore Red Dwarf... I just think hearing Captain Picard talk crap (in his monotone voice) about another sci-fi television show is hysterical.
The benefit of this is you get to watch Lister throw some raw chicken at Ainsley. I have to admit I played that part a lot and then nearly went unconscious from laughing too much.
Anyone else thinking Danny John Jules is a bit of a chef? The way he slices some of those ingredients... Cat should have come back and stole the food at the end.
The British have an outstanding talent in making the best Sci/fi comedies, especially with a low budget and terrible costumes which just makes it more...alluring then any fancy high budget CGI stuff. Another British sci/fi comedy that has this flair, granted it's nowhere near as good as Red Dwarf, and it is called Hyperdrive. Shame Hyperdrive only had a two season run but it has elements of Red Dwarf and such that makes it very fun to watch.
lol, this episode is screamingly funny! Paticularly the bits where Ainsley gets really cross with the crew, especially the bit where the crew brought in some bizarre and unhygienic ingredients for the show! But I think that bit was inspired from Ready Steady Cook, where contestants bring in ingredients for the chef from their own shopping under a fiver. To me it sounds like an episode of can't cook won't cook gone wrong!
@@sambee8982 Could be a whole series: Goit's Kitchen... Ramsay's Gimboid Nightmares... MasterSmeg... Great British Smeg Off... How about Smeg Apprentice? Dragon's Goit? Gimboid News? The Daily Smeg?
The constant look of dread on Chloes face the entire time was priceless. Also pretty well founded given how uncooked chicken can kill you, plus watching them goof about when she has to eat whatever they make. They really should have done something else haha
What a night Red Dwarf night was. I will never forget it.
Andrew Chapman same here I've been a long standing member of the official fan club for 10 years now
+Andrew Chapman Too true! Channel 4''s Beavis and Butthead: Moronathon was pretty good too. Another one that got taped for sure!
james fry how can I join the fan club
It was the peak of my 12th year on earth, maybe. That and pirating all the cable channels.
i was born in 2009 so im confuse
There is a range of kitchen appliances, popular here in Australia, called Smeg. They never fail to put me into "smirk mode".
Yep, makes me laugh everyday when I put something in the dishwasher.
You can get Smeg fridges here in the UK too. Nearly spat my breakfast out the first time I saw one round a friend's house.
Same as me in New Zealand hahaha, cheers up my morning mood!
I'm guessing whoever named those appliances doesnt know the definition of "smeg" or that it's the shortened name for "smegma"

The only people to make Ainsley Harriet legitimately angry.
Twice. He was that GELF bride as well.
Patrick Stewart saluting like Rimmer for the win!

SIR Patrick Stewart to us mortals... :)
that was epicly unexpected.
@@fernandogarajalde4066 I'll show respect & admiration to Mr Stewart but no to bullshit titles from parasitic "royalty".
That made me so happy.
Sir Patrick Stewart, Captain Piccard , doing the Rimmer special Salute , hilarious and priceless.
Yep.
Well, there was a problem back in the day between Star Trek and Red Dwarf.
Though, apparently, Patrick is a big fan of the series.

The occasional cutaway to her expressions of increasing horror are perfect.
Sexiest Kochanski ever!

"Well that's not very professional, is it?"
"SHUT UP!"

the greatest show to ever air!! Boys from the Dwarf!!
Now we need a red dwarf masterchef special 🤣
Only the red dwarf crew could upstage Ainsley, only Ainsley could upstage the red dwarf crew... perfect... I love how Clare looks genuinely concerned for the boys at times!
This version of Kochanski was Chloe Annett not Clare Grogan
The funny thing is Danny and Chris do seem to have some cooking skill already, even if they had to steel Ainsley's stuff.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate Danny John-Jules genuinely impressive chopping skills?
no wonder lister failed the chefs exam...lol

When Kochanski hits Lister with the frying pan at 9:35 it has the same sound effect as the one that Vic hits Bob with!😄😄😄
l cant beleive it was in the 80's omg thats so long ago l still watch it now even my grandkids watch it too brilliant show have always loved it tfs
I shed some tears laughing, especially near the end and the coriander trees. It looked like a mini forest in muddy ground with a bit of snow. XD
Sad thing is that there can never be another one of these RD nights. I will always Cherish this one though.
I love the part where Craig chucks a piece of chicken at Ainsley Harriot!
The way Chloe Arnett was just traumatised the entire time
The benefit of this is you get to watch Lister throw some raw chicken at Ainsley. I have to admit I played that part a lot and then nearly went unconscious from laughing too much.
It was 23.22 for me. Rimmer's and Dwayne's attempts at the Ainsley hip circles 😅
Heaven forbid should they do this with Gordon Ramsay!
+Benjamin Ditch I think he'd scream their fucking heads off.
Indeed
your not the only one to come up with this idea, guess it's in the air somewhere lol
Honestly I think Ramsey would be nicer to them than this smeghead was. This AH was an A H, to the whole cast.
It would be fun
Maybe Gordon could be really nice to Rimmer and hate the others...?
I remember thinking even at the time Danny's mad chopping skills
How the HELL did I not know that this existed until 2013!? I watched Red Dwarf pretty much all the way through.
2023 for me!

So mad just love the posse and the delightful Kochanski 😊 of course
🤣 at 12:41 the way Rimmer looks at Dwane, never caught that before!

Rimmer always has the best facial expressions 🤣
Pretty much spot on for how Rimmer WOULD look at him too.
This is hilarious thank you so much for the upload!
Thanks Mr Stewart.

Jesus, I was 14 when this came out. Not as funny as I remember. But then again, I had only just discovered those books at the time.
The knife antics are simply bonkers
10:09 The arrival of Dwayne Dibley.
The flavour of the Pot Noodle: Mackerel Ice Cream.

Why can't TV still be like this ?
omg captain Picard
brilliant intro
I remember this! Fuck i'm old.
i guess patrick stewart forgot about the aliens
There's GELF's, no aliens.
I thought the Gelf was an alien but I see
Gelf means genetically engineered lifeform.
Yeah there are no aliens in Red Dwarf. Gelfs were engineered by humans from Earth like everything else in the Red Dwarf universe.
