    My son is a Sci-Fi geek and obsessed with Red Dwarf, a couple of years back he managed Chris and Danny's booth at Liverpool Comic Con, when it was all over they took some selfies with him, My son is on the autism spectrum, they are the only photos I have with him smiling it's the happiest I've ever seen him. It was probably nothing to Chris and Danny but those pictures are so special to me.

      My boy is too (on the spectrum). He loves RD of course, but also a huge Fadder Ted fan. A few years back we met Ardal O'Hanlan after his stand up show, I took a photo with my son, who made a joke about being close or far away in the photo, Ardal laughed (like it was the first time anyone had quoted it to him) he was great.

      Depression is a harsh reality for many. I suffered myself for 25+ years before getting to the bottom of it. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at 40 years old, but my neurologist is certain that I've had it since I was 16. Depression is a common symptom of MS. I was also diagnosed with ADHD a year later. Most would probably lose it when receiving diagnosis like these. But I was elated! I had the answer to my mental health issue. Since then I've met my now fiancee, and my depression has all but gone. Just remember that there's always light at the end of every tunnel.

      Oh, the show's DEFINITELY better when you have Cat, Lister, Rimmer, and Kryten in it.
      That seems to be the right character balance there.
      The Holly's are a question mark -- Kochanski is NOT. Most people did not care for the way she was written even if they had no personal animosity towards Chloe Annett or Clare Grogan. Kochanski was NOT designed to be a series regular and the chemistry never worked well with women beyond Holly and even with Holly it's a toss-up for some who's better.

    red dwarf is something i was exposed to at a very young age by my dad, he had all the episodes up to series 7 recorded on vhs, as well as owning a couple of the officially released tapes. half of the recorded vhs have been worn down and had to be thrown out (series 2, 3 and 5), which admittedly is probably my fault lol but im working on recording my own now to fill in the blanks as it is my favourite way to watch the show (feels like how it was MEANT to be seen)
    by comparison to many red dwarf fans, im quite young at (almost) 23 but red dwarf really means the world to me. i always find myself coming back to it, even knowing the storyline and jokes word for word by now, it brings me a huge sense of comfort. it reminds me of being a kid sitting infront of my big crt tv in my bedroom in the 2000s and forcing any friend who came over to watch it with me. im glad to have been raised on such an excellent show, i really wouldnt have it any other way

    This was the funniest sitcom in the history of British television , and the best quality of science fiction, second only to Doctor Who. I watched every... single... episode. I was very sad when Louisiana Public Broadcasting stopped giving me this escape from the pain and loneliness of my empty and unloved life. The late 90's were a very difficult time for me: totally alone in myself, divorced from my best friend, and even my former business partner. Lister and Rimmer were the two halves of ME- the modern, male: the lone science nerd, the failed, military, authoritarian, and even the self-absorbed, survivor cat, the entitled and sex-starved princess too- all of me floating on a lonely rock in space after a long night shift at hard labor. I was, am, and will ALWAYS BE- a loyal Smeghead! Thanks to the BBC and ALL of these great actors and writers. You made my life bearable at a time when any sane man might have jumped out of a 13th floor window. God Bless you!

    I think the best thing about Red Dwarf is the relationship (odd-couple-y)
    between Rimer and Lister. The best evidence of this is 'Marooned'. If
    they just didn't have that on-off bro-mance relationship, it would be so
    dull.

    • @christianalanwilson434
      @christianalanwilson434 8 лет назад +10

      Which is doubly fitting to the premise of the show since the actors don't like each other even in real life. Holly activated Rimmer mainly to give Lister a hard time and vise versa, thus giving Lister something to live for. The fact that the actors themselves don't get along ended up giving it that extra level of believably it deserved.

    • @Djarra

      Sanford &Son isn't exactly a remake, Galton and Simpson just took the idea of a father and son and then wrote it around the Black American pair. There are no remade episodes at all. Which is why it works so well. 'Porridge' less well and 'Dad's Army' was total flop. 'Dear John' wasn't so bad, although I'm glad the US version of 'Only Fools' never happened (Well the excellent French and Saunders sets of such a thing with Matt Lucas as an American Del Boy not withstanding)
      The American version of 'To the Manor Born' was interesting, as they reset the whole thing in the 20s and made DeVere American, but it sort of worked. While the American version of 'Being Human' was more faithful to the original idea, and didn't suffer from the censorship we have to put up with in the UK these days (Red Dwarf would can't be shown unedited on free to air TV, and even classic Doctor Who's are out and they were made as kids shows)
      Of there has been the reverse version, 'Brighton Bells' a British remake of 'The Golden Girls'. While 'Live on Mars' was based on a script that was ripped off and the original was made in the US. Although that is all very confusing indeed.

    I used to watch everything that was on public broadcast. I grewup with Doctor Who from the second Doctor on. Blackadder, Red Dwarf, and so many others. I didn't care that the production values on BBC shows was skimpy at best. What they had was some of the best writers and actors out there making these things of beauty! If they had had the money and backing of like Star Treck or something then a huge part of what makes these series great would have not been there!

    They did tell a whopping lie though. They say that Norman Lovett left red dwarf because he moved a ways away and didn't want to commute. However, it's a well known fact that Norman wanted more money to play the part and they couldn't come to an agreement.

    • @makeshiftman
      @makeshiftman 7 лет назад +4

      It's not a lie exactly... Norman moved away and didn't feel he needed/wanted to be there as much so cut his days in half so they cut his wages which he was upset about and they couldn't come to an agreement so they got Hattie. It wasn't that he wanted more than he was getting, he wanted the same money for half as much work.

    Red Dwarf is a great success primarily because of the following. Change any of the following, and Red Dwarf will begin to suffer:
    - Doug Naylor's writing
    - Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules, and Robert Llewellyn playing their parts
    - The fact (whether anyone actually realizes it) that the show is a tribute to the working class
    In other words, just as the Beatles would no longer be the Beatles if one of them were replaced, in order for Red Dwarf to FULLY be Red Dwarf, Doug Naylor, Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules, and Robert Llewellyn MUST be present and fully involved.
    Looking forward to more episodes.

    • @neilforbes416
      @neilforbes416 5 лет назад +1

      The trouble with this line, "just as the Beatles would no longer be the Beatles if one of them were replaced" forgets the fact that a) Richard "Ringo Starr" Starkey replaced Pete Best on Drums just as the group recorded their first record for EMI-Parlophone, and b) Jimmy Nichol was Ringo Starr's stand-in for the first few weeks of the group's Australian tour in 1964.

    • @Jimmy__Jazzz
      @Jimmy__Jazzz 4 года назад

      Neil Forbes i think he’s referring more to the point that The Beatles wouldn’t be The Beatles we all know and love if you changed one of the line-up who are famous for the band’s recorded output/legacy, which doesn’t really include Pete Best’s pre-fame input and someone who joined them for 13 shows of 1 tour in 1964.

    Chris Barrie didn't leave Red Dwarf because he was making The Brittas Empire. He had filmed both shows consecutively for years. From what I gathered from interviews, he left because by series 6 he wasn't happy with the some of the production aspects of the show and felt the scripts were becoming much more traditionally sit-com like (the catch-phrase-y "Space Corps Directives" for example,). and that his character was stagnated. He was also wanting to go into production to star in a sitcom, which was not well received, lasted only 2 series, called A Prince Among Men He originally intended to do only two episodes of Series 7 and ended up being in 4 - though two were only cameo appearances. and he enjoyed making them so much that he returned full time for series 8.

    • @ColonelStraker

      I saw an interview with Chris where he eluded a major part of the reason was his character never evolved or changed and was always the target of persecution. This resulted in them inventing Ace Rimmer.

    Many years back I met a Squadron Leader Rimmer, who had retired to live off-grid on a remote Greek island. Turned out that he had been at school with the authors. It was pretty clear that the character was an unconcealed take-off of their old classmate. The real Rimmer had no TV and only heard about the show when it was already a cult. He got his own back by working up a legal letterhead and pretending to sue the show, claiming that he got them pretty stressed before revealing that he was teasing them...
