- Ex-Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev says the dissolution of the USSR in 1991 was "a crime and a coup". In a rare interview marking 25 years since the demise of the Soviet Union, he told the BBC's Steve Rosenberg he resigned to avoid a bloody civil war. But today the West was "provoking Russia" and trying to undermine President Vladimir Putin, he said.

This man has always given me the impression of being a wise and compassionate person. His handling of US-USSR relations helped to temporarily ease tensions. He made concessions, not just for the good of the Soviet Union, but for the world. It’s very unfortunate that it is a naive thing to do in this world. Many people see his concessions as catastrophic for Russia and former Soviet states, so now we live in a world where nuclear powers are unwilling to sit at the table with anything other than the demands they have stood firm on for decades.

They were catastrophic for Russia because of the way the West handled it. Promises made and given at that time, totally and completely disregarded today. Look at a map of Eastern Europe and see all the former Soviet bloc states they withdrew from, now have US troops, us tanks, missiles on them. NATO. "Not an inch Eastward" we promised, but we reneged on it. Instead of truly treating Russia as a partner like we did with Germany and Japan, we kept an adversarial stance. And now we are paying for it. Although lots got rich along the way didn't they??? And isn't that what is really important?

I'm an American. I feel like I grew up with Mr. Gorbachev. I think he was a compassionate man. I also think he was an extraordinary leader, like President Reagan.

When my son Paul was 10years old i video taped him sitting on Mr Gorbachev's lap and my 8 yea old daughter was sitting on his wife's lap and My wife Antonina was talking to both Mr Gorbachev and his wife in both Russian and Ukrainian. She was a Russian, French and Spanish language teacher with 2 Masters degrees from the University of California at Davis. She looked like Doris Day the movie star. She crashed the Banquette held in Mr Gorbachev's honor at the 100th commencement of the graduating class of Northeastern University in Boston. I was attending my 25th class reunion. I graduated with a BSME degree in Mechanical engineering class of 1973. I carried the American flag into the fleet center to lead the graduation class in. Mr Gorbachev was the featured speaker. He has the best speaking voice next to my fathers that i ever heard. He gave a one of a kind awesome speech. My wife and kids saw me on the big screen TV of the fleet center as i carried the flag in. My wife passed away in 2010 at age 60 from inflammatory breast cancer. Now i can say for certain Mr. Gorbachev is a very honorable man. I am American and very lucky to have attended Northeastern University in Boston and graduating. Our house was flooded and i no longer have the video tap. But I can still hear Mr Gorbachev's voice in my brain. He has a very good grip when he shakes your hand. I am now 75 years old living in senior housing in CT. I had 5 strokes and 4 heart attacks and my heart was shocked twice. I will never live as long as Mr Gorbachev. He Made a huge difference in our world. He would never order Ukraine to be attacked like Putin did. I am American with a Polish American mother and an American, Ukrainian father. I am not political but I am against this war with Ukraine. My fighting days are over. We are still the land of the free and the home of the brave. So help Ukraine before it is too late. They are asking for help.

Why do people hate him? I learnt in history classes is that he tried to save USSR through reforms but failed and in the end he allowed a peaceful transition of power without turning Russia into Syria.You may criticise his reforms but his reforms were actually peaceful and intended to help the soviet people and end the Cold War.

March 17th 1991 there was All-Union referendum. "Would you like to save USSR?" - there was the question. 77,85 % of all people said YES. How do you think what is the reason why people hate him?
People hate him because
1) vast majority of them lived better under the Soviet Union
2) his incompentence in keeping it going... the USSR didn't collapse, at least the old one, it was his perestroika that destroyed the economic (and political) base on which a soviet style planned economy functioned.
3) his impotence, fear during and after the 91 coup, and inability to keep the sharks like Yeltsin at bay from 1985 ownards. He led Russia to the brink of an abyss, and then let Yelsin push her over the edge.
His impotence made hundreds of millions across eastern europe, asia and the middle east suffer (for example, Iraq war would never have happened). Hundreds of thousands all over europe died because of his action, inaction and general impotence.
While it's not only his fault (most of it is Yeltsins, in fact), he has the greatest responsibility for ending, through his incompetence, something that was worth saving, that many people miss today.
That piece of shit deserves a special place in hell, for trying to fill shoes so big he drowned in them.

In the USSR was bad, inefficient planned economy that destroyed the Soviet Union, and Gorbachev tried to change it, but stumbled upon Brezhnev's "sheep" who don't like change, and Yes, he didn't have the nerve. And Gorbachev how to blame for the deaths around the world? He has eliminated the block of ATS, he withdrew Soviet troops from Europe, about NSE did the right thing. But NATO took advantage of this and made the whole of Evapo their missiles. It is NATO and the US destroyed Iraq, not Gorbachev. And that is because NATO is now happening in Ukraine, the collapse of, not because of Gorbachev. If amercians wanted peace, they would have respectly NATO, but they didn't, so it's their fault in the deaths of people, not Gorbachev.

He had wanted to transform the USSR into democratic socialist style economics(like modern day Scandinavia). And he thought that in order to change the economic system he would have to first change the political system. Glasnost backfired, yeltsin was put in power, and shock therapy was pushed. Gorbachev failed the reforms he wanted. He was weak and so many Russians died because of it.

from the little i've heard and read of Gorbachev, he comes off as a genuinely good and sensible man. Also a patriot who put the best interest of his country and people before his own interests, a true leader who deserved the respect and love of his people.

Keep in mind, he only made minor reforms to try to help the people in a different way. He didn't want to dissolve the union. It was Boris Yeltsin and the presidents of Belarus and Ukraine, I think, that practically smashed the scales and displaced millions by voting to dissolve the union, and the major reforms only exacerbated the downfall's effects.

I think I have grasped his philosophy after watching many of his interviews recently. This guy is a consistent pacifist and mediator. He knows very well that a conflict cannot exist without hostile interaction between the two opposite sides. The ending of the Cold War was a direct implementation of this philosophy in the USSR's foreign relations. Rejection to hostile interaction also means he had to voluntarily step down from power in 1991 to prevent a conflict from further escalating. And this is also why he never blamed the current crisis and dilemma on Russia or Putin. He knew that the responsibility for the current conflict lies in both sides' interactions. In some sense, Russia was provoked but it would also be mistaken to forget that Russia had also provoked the West. The same thing could be also said about the rise of Russian authoritarianism since the 2010s, it was also kinda formed in interactions between Putin's administration and Russia's liberal movements. Hence he always emphasized that Putin only acted in response. People often say he avoided criticising Putin directly so that he could still live in peace in Russia. I don't think that's the case, he really doesn't blame Putin. A real pacifist should have a capacity to sympathise with any side.

And there was absolutely no threat of any civil war at the time. Civil war between which groups? The only conflict was between the people and the corrupt communist leadership elite. The army clearly got on the side of people, by refusing to shoot during the 1991 coup. Gorbachev had nothing to do with that, he was cowardly hiding his ass in his vacation compound in Crimea, and he only resurfaced once the coup was suppressed. People didn't take him seriously after that, including the media, which was pretty much free and uncensored at that time.

Let's not forget that violent ethnic and territorial conflicts were already happening in the South Caucasus in the late 1980s. Not all 15 republics of the USSR were besties, and not all of them wanted to hold hands together towards independence.

The Soviets had already found out in the Gulf War that their weapons and tactics, zealously emulated by the Iraqis, were no match for the U.S. That was a large part of their giving up on the Cold War. They had already lost. There was no point in pretending anymore.

I was 19 when the USSR collapsed. I had no idea of the gravity of it all. I thought it was just some reforms and a couple borders being opened up to other Soviets. Personally, I think Gorbachev just got caught holding the bag. The USSR could not last forever. Western pressure and Soviet aggression was a bad combination. After decades of aggression being met with fierce resistance and essentially walling yourself off from the world it died. As Margaret Thatcher said, “you’ll eventually run out of other people’s money”. Sadly, the future doesn’t look bright for Russia, or Russians.
