Meanwell have made a name for themselves in the past few yeast, really growing to be a supplier of solid reliable products. I have been really impressed with their products. The issues that you have experienced with the other power supplies is most likely down to the cheap DMX controllers sending back to the power supplies a lot of electrical noise. If someone was to try to CE mark those controllers they would likely fail in the conducted emission tests. Luckily the Meanwell power supplies can cope with that level of noise. Great lighting anyway!
Aha, that was useful info!!! I am not very impressed with the DMX controllers I bought. I might replace them with something better, and some with 6 channels. Glad to hear that others as well think MeanWell is a solid brand 👍 thanks for your feedback!
I have to agree. Was probably a pretty frustrating project (4 months!) but it gives an amazing vibe of “yes it’s sort of practical but mainly let’s go nuts and do something REALLY well”. Even down to the video editing WITH CHAPTERS! Such a great piece of work.
Next time you need to make a bunch of things like those longer brackets, make the bends in the sheet aluminium and use the band saw to slice them off like bread. Great job, it looks fantastic! I'd love to do this to my garage but the amount of work required is a bit intimidating. I can only imagine how frustrating it must have been trying to get rid of that humming.
Ahh, I loved that idea 💡 that was a great tips. I'll remember it to next time 👍👍👍 Happy to hear you like the result. If you are aiming for a similar project it's absolutely best to wait until you know you have some free time on hand. It always takes longer time than you think 😔
One thing to note is led strip lights usually are tremendously more power efficient when run less than 100% so you did the right thing by installing more lighting than you needed so you dont have to run them at 100% power. LED lighting, dimming, and power delivery can be very complex but not that hard once you take time to understand it. The biggest problem is most people dont realize this when they first get into it.
I have to admit I have switched over to be running them mostly on 100% because my DMX drivers are a bit cheap and causes flicker on camera when I am dimming. It's crazy bright inside so so have to use ND filter on my camera 😝 I totally agree about the complexity. I was afraid the DMX system could be difficult to learn, and I struggled a lot finding general info about it. Many tutorials are for specific brands, and that is more or less just plug and play to use it. However, it's not very complex when you first understand it.
Amazing as always. I love how you take the time to not only explain everything simply and honestly, but make it entertaining too. We all know that RGB LEDs are the key to a successfull RUclips channel, so you're well on your way now. 😁😁
Well hello there David Bowie 🤣 The amount of work, and time put into this is just so damn impressive. And that you manage to show the whole process in such an entertaining way. You are reaching far with this, just wait and see. Really well done, and I really like the end result. I see it is time to bring you out in some fresh air. 🤣👏🏻Really impressive work, this was really will done.
MeanWell is my goto power supply brand because they make quality products. They also offer comprehensive datasheets and the more expensive ones feature proper PFC and all the protections you could ever need.
Thanks Ryan ☺️ I try my best to use storytelling and not just summarize the facts. I think you do a lot of the same in your videos, makes it (hopefully) more interesting for the viewer.
@@kihestad very much like you've done how you organize & choose good quality product, many youtuber i watched that doesn't care about safety & health came from the product they used
Thank you very much! Ive been planning on upgrading my garage lighting but have been disappointed in the lack of high output 90+ cri lighting availability without paying $6k for cree linear lights. Having high cri is a high priority to me because it makes a HUGE difference in color perception.
I can totally understand that. The lights in my workshop are just at a whole new level after I installed these, and it's much easier to get proper colors when recording video. I have a Godox LED panels where I can set the warmth/kelvin to match the ceiling lights, this combo works great!
your camera makes the space look bigger.. i appreciate this view at 30:30 and 30:35 which shows your door taking up about 30% of the ceiling.. how wide is your overhead door?
Haha, I used an action camera that has almost a 180 degree lens to capture the whole garage. Check this video: ruclips.net/video/43jm5yWG1dY/видео.html - 2minutes into it you can see the size
It would also have been shit. A step down from those work lamp stands he was using, never mind the previous fluorescents. I have a temporary setup with 3 lamps and every single task in the garage is a PITA because of the hard shadows, end up using a torch constantly. The combined garage/studio/gallery setup is in the “cool but psycho” range, however the general concept is excellent especially for a multi use space.
I don't often comment on RUclips videos but when I do, they are great like this - and this is the first time I write this much. First comment was on your video too 🙂 Great work, nice project and very well done video. I have been planning the same project and this gave me a lot of good insight and confirmed me to buy more Meanwell power supply units alongside the one I already have. Best regards and greetings from fellow tinkerer and garage enthusiast/improver.
Thanks a lot for your kind words, actually - it means even more than a lot when it's coming from a fellow garage tinkerer 😊 Glad to hear you found it useful, I really hope it can give you some tips to your own project. I have got several comments about Meanwell, everyone has positive experiences with the brand 👍 Good luck with your garage projects!!!
16:09 you have a lot of money in this with all the power controllers and dimmers. i just removed all my ballasts and installed new tombstones into my 8ft fixtures to convert them from a pair of 8ft T12 florescent bulbs to 2 pairs of 120v 4ft T8 LED bulbs. I cannot control color, nor can i dim them. I have 6000K bulbs from Amazon. I have 20 fixtures (80 4ft LED bulbs) at 18W each, it's 1440W in my 37'X23' garage.I did this 2.5 years ago, but today, with the tombstones, this would cost $540 for all the tombstones and bulbs. each bulb is 2200 lumens. I know this is a LOT of stats.. but can you share all the same detail? There are pros and cons to both.. like I already had all the fixtures.. so there's another difference. I like all your custom brackets and thought into this, by the way. I've just seen too many of the self adhesive tape LED strips get spotty over time with dead LED diodes.
Sounds like you made a solid conversion from T12 to LED in your garage. I am not sure how much you can trust the lumens rating on this from the sellers, but I used smd5630 LEDs and specs say: 55-65 lm per LED. I used a total of 3690 of these (61.5 meter LED strips x 60 LEDs per m).
I highly dislike high power 12V systems. They're literally fire hazards here and there, specifically cause of the mentioned connector issues and cabling size too. I really don't understand why 24V (at least) hasn't gotten to be the standard. I need to replace my garage lights near future and I'll definitely get something like FTLight Swift II models or something in that vein. 230V in and inside fixture DIP switches to fine tune color temperature. Much more simpler solution that will be easy to replace when time comes again. Btw I sincerely hope nothing ever happens to your garage. In case of fire I suppose it would be absolute b*tch to work with insurance company with heavily customized solutions.
As long as the electrical equipment is CE marked and used according to the requirements it should be safe to use and the insurance will cover it. I think you might have misunderstood how electricity works, there is no reason for 24V to be any better or safer than 12V. Since 12V is most common, you will find a lot of 12V low quality equipment, but do not be confused to think 12V is inherently bad 😊
Yes, if you are pushing the same amount of watts through a 12V as a 24V system, you are pushing twice the amount of amperage in the 12V system, and it needs beefier components and cables compared to the 24V system. I do have several DIY LED lamp using 24V, they are crazy powerful but the LEDs get insanely hot. My 12V DIY garage ceiling lights are just barely hot, the alu channels possibly helps on heat dissipation, but the 12V system seems to work great now.

Great video, beyond overkill but it's in the spirit of this channel and it turned out really cool.
Thanks 😊 it is fun to go "beyond overkill" some times, I think that has to become my new motto 😁

Thanks so much! 👍🤩

3 metal halide lamps would have lit up the entire space without breaking after a few months.
A garage should have at least 6000 light bulbs 😁
