The ACT doesn’t even test our knowledge or how smart you are, but it’s very important to get a good score to get into college. The test is designed to make you run out of time, trick you, and fail you. It’s all about time management.
Ridiculous that we need a decent grade on this stupid test so we can get into college. I want a to be a psychologist. I don’t need to know any of this. And I’ll only have to learn it to get a decent grade on this test
It’s honestly dumb. You’re right. I’ve worked my ass off for my gpa over these last 3 years, but it’ll mean nothing if I don’t do well on this stupid test.
@@ehall1768 Please work hard towards getting a good grade on the ACT! If you've done well in high school, you'll do well in the ACT, just practice and there's no way you can fail. It seems easy saying it, but I'm in my 20's retaking it- when I look back at high school, it was pretty easy, you just have to remember formulas and understand the text. Don't settle for less! This test isn't to deter you from a good school- it's to see how DETERMINED you are to exceeding expectations and doing well. Good luck!
Curry Thank you so much for you encouragement! I fell disappointed with myself because I am in my 20’s too but I didn’t take the ACT when I was in high school (I didn’t know how important it was) and now I need to practice and do very well if I want to get into college and literally my scholarship depends on it. But seriously thank you! This was a good sign for me ^_^ and good luck 🤞
Saturday is a big day! I really hope I score a 33! I didn't know ellipses were on the exam, thanks for letting us know, otherwise I would've never had a clue 😅

I’m about to be sophomore and I plan on taking the ACT in the beginning of junior year. I’m already prepping by timing myself with algebra 1 and geometry (taking algebra 2 next year). Advice?
One major piece of advice is not to rely on your calculator. Your calculator most of the time will slow you down if you consistently go back to it every problem, which will cause you not to finish. I recommend getting good at mental math if you aren't already.
My only comment is that you might consider finding "m" using a vertical method of subtracting P2-P1 then there is no problem remembering (x1,y1); (x2,y2) , and finally just put delta-y over delta-x to get m, and just as you said, the order of P1, P2 makes no difference. It is quick and easy, and you don't necessarily need to remember the formula. M= delta-y over delta-x
I'm in 7th grade, and I am taking this in December! I'm worried about not knowing the formulas for the math parts! I don't understand any of this basically! Any help?
Honest, you should just wait till you’re at least in 9th grade. Once you do algebra 1 and geometry, you’ll understand this a lot more and you’ll be able to actually study and understand what you’re doing.
Brooke, I really need your advice (specially because you're the best tutor I've seen haha)! I took the SAT twice and I just can't handle the Reading section. I've literally done all Khan Academy exercises and took every official Practice Tests available (all 8 of them). I usually run out of time to finish this section, but when I do finish I get about 2 wrong per passage. I've tried everything I can, including using the books you recommended in one of your videos. I've also read some classics from George Orwell, Mark Twain etc, since I am an international student. I don't know how can I study more effectively! I think the most important method I could use is finishing the section 10 minutes early and then reviewing some of the questions, but I just don't know how!Only you can help me, pleasee!
David W I would recommend Baron's " aiming for a perfect score". The first third or so is dedicated to techniques for breaking down passages with different neat acronyms, and skills. Very handy, experience with speed reading helps. I had a reading level of severely deficient when I was in 1st grade, due to my horrible dyslexia. I was able to go from at risk seeing people for it to high School graduate level, reading 600wpm in a year! If my dyslexic ass that still can't spell the most basic things out loud can do it, you can overcome your challenge. :)
Brooke Hanson ok! But I don't think vocabulary is the big problem here, specially because I aced the Writing & Language section of the last SAT I took. I can easily grasp the ideas in the passages, but I am always rushing so I don't run out of time. This absolutely prejudices my performance. I've watched all your videos about speed reading, but maybe my test approach is flawed. I usually (try to) skim the text, read the questions and go back to the text. I finish some passages in 10 minutes, but others take me about 14. I believe that if had plenty of time I could possibly get a perfect score, but unfortunately the test is designed that way..
Can't use calculator programs on ACT as of 5/26/18 go to their policy "Remove all documents and remove all programs that have computer algebra system functionality"
CAS is a specific TYPE of program. SOME programs are allowed per the FAQ on ACT's site-- see Q9 below for what IS ALLOWED in terms of programs I interpret this to be a simple use of a formula (i.e. slope formula, distance formula, quadratic formula, etc.): Q2: What is computer algebra system (CAS) functionality? A: A computer algebra system typically solves equations algebraically, simplifies expressions, performs algebraic manipulations, and performs exact arithmetic (for example, does not round or truncate decimal places). A computer algebra system is also a system, potentially doing many levels of analysis at the same time. Examples include, but are not limited to, Zoom-Math, APP4MATH, F2K, etc. Q3: Why can't I use a computer algebra system on the ACT Mathematics test? A: A computer algebra system has a valid place in mathematics, and learning how to use the tool effectively is valuable. The ACT Mathematics Test does not assess this skill. Being college and career ready in mathematics requires that a student be able to analyze algebraic expressions and equations, knowing what to do in order to solve problems. Q4: My calculator holds apps as well as programs. Are apps allowed? A: Apps that have CAS functionality must be removed as well. Even though your calculator may have separate buttons or places to store apps versus programs, an app is a kind of program. For the purposes of this policy, the definition of “program” includes apps. Any time the word “program” is used, it should be interpreted to include apps as well. Q5: Do ALL programs have to be removed? What about documents? A: Only programs that have CAS functionality must be removed. All documents, however, must be removed regardless of their purpose or function. Q6: Can you tell me if a specific program or app is allowed? A: Given the proliferation of math resources/tools, ACT is not fully familiar with all mathematics programs and apps that are available for use on a calculator. If you are unsure whether a program or app is prohibited, our recommendation is to not install it or remove it before test day. Q7: Is it OK to disable programs instead of removing them? A: ACT's calculator policy calls for the programs to be removed. Disabling programs - for example, putting the calculator in Press to Test mode - is not enough. Q8: If I have to remove programs from my calculator, how do I get them back on it after I test? A: Many calculators have a way of restoring programs if they have been saved outside the calculator. If you have programs that you need to remove and you do not know how to save and restore, we recommend you check with your calculator company for details well in advance of test day. Q9: What kinds of mathematics-related programs ARE allowed? A: The kinds of mathematics-related programs permitted for the ACT allow students to use the calculator capabilities to do the routine calculations yet require students to show their analysis skills by choosing the right operations and process. Mathematics-related programs are allowed if they are single-purpose - for example, finding numeric solutions to a quadratic equation. A student must choose the right program for the right purpose. This is much the same as choosing the right formula for the right purpose. Q10: Are there any rules that allowed mathematics-related programs must follow? A: Programs must be written in the language of the calculator. Programs written in a different language, compiled, and loaded onto the calculator are not allowed. In this way, the programs can be examined on the calculator and will use calculator functions. Programs must not be lengthy. The limit is 25 logical lines of code. Programs cannot call another program. Techniques such as compressing code into a data statement are not allowed as a way of getting around this limit. Programs are allowed to change the value of system variables so that results may, for example, be graphed through the normal calculator graphing interface. www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/help.html
