Creating realistic fossils from air dry foam! An awesome DIY project

  • Dinosaurs and fossils are awesome, and living near the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta has exposed me to this world from a very young age. Their Burgess Shale display has long stood as one of my absolute favourite museum exhibits. So this combines both my love of dinosaurs with the world of prop making by creating a tutorial for making fossils for display, both large and small!

      Thanks WKS! I think it would be right at home with a dinosaur based build used as a way to decorate walls to theme. I know this one is going to become a permanent wall decoration at the house. It just feels and looks so realistic, it would be very hard to out it as a prop. Thanks for watching! I need to swing over and do some catchup on your videos, feels like I have been chasing my tail for the last 4 weeks!! Thanks for watching!

    WOW WOW WOW Samhain, sooooo AMAZING!! These turned out absolutely beautiful, and look totally convincing! You just keep stepping it up and continuing to put out more and more epic prop work! Well done my friend! Thank you so much for sharing this super fun project, what a blast!😱😄👍

      Thanks Grimwood! I really enjoyed doing this and would suggest to anyone to build something like this for themselves, it is such a enjoyable prop to build and the end result is way better than I had even anticipated. I really enjoy these "Out there" props, I know someone out there at some point will want to build a lightweight fossil! Thanks for watching man!

      This is one of my favorite techniques, though I have noticed a bit of shrinkage of the air dry foam since I have done it. I’m going to do a short on how to fix it in the near future! Thanks for watching!

    Wow! This is amazing! It reminds me of being mesmerized by the Atlantic horseshoe crabs on the East Coast, which are essentially living fossils. Such a beautiful build, Samhain!

    • @SamhainPropworks
      @SamhainPropworks  2 года назад +1

      I always love seeing horseshoe grabs because they do remind me of trilobites, blue blood and all. The Air Dry foam is such a great material to use for something like this, and this can be used on so many more builds too, not just limited to fossils. Like making a dirt coloured wall with bits of skeleton embedded within. The uses for this are many! Thanks for your support Fraidy!

      @@SamhainPropworks Hey! Have you ever used the air dry foam to sculpt onto an existing plastic structure?

    • @SamhainPropworks
      @SamhainPropworks  2 года назад +2

      @@FraidyZone I have not, but this stuff can be a bit brittle when dry so wherever you use it would be best to be close to surface to give it strength, or away from hands that could see it get broken. There is an air dry foam material that I understand dries a lot more flexible, but at the same time the cost is way higher. Im sure when dried it can be glued onto plastic with the appropriate adhesive :)

      Thanks @theropennetwork! I'm glad the video helped your project! I bet a whole wall done like this would be amazing. I did a followup video on a small repair I had to make to my trilobite as the air dry clay fully dried out and cracked in different spots, in the end it made the end result look even better!

      I will send you an image. I think we used the wrong foam board though. Is it supposed to be regular styrofoam?

      Glad you enjoyed it! I have noticed that the air dry clay over many months shrunk more than what was on the video. I'm planning on doing a follow up to this to show how to deal with the shrinkage! Thanks for watching!

      @SamhainPropworks  6 месяцев назад

      Hey @snicklefritz59, When I read your comment I was gobsmacked. I have worked with that wax on floors before, both applying and stripping and I never had put two seconds of thought into using it on props!! It smells the same as wood varathane and now I am going to buy a gallon and experiment! Thanks so much for the suggestion!

    • @snicklefritz59
      @snicklefritz59 6 месяцев назад +1

      I use it on 1/8 grade vegetable tan dye leather. you have to case the leather first... after your done molding it... then use the acrylic floor wax.. no strippers. lol... Makes the leather even more pliable (for a short time) thats the time to do your last touch ups, and edgings.. then it hardens like wood... looks like wood too. I imagine it will work with any porus matterial.. it dries odorless too... good luck... interested to see how your project turns out... ill show you one of my masks.... @@SamhainPropworks

    • @SamhainPropworks
      @SamhainPropworks  11 месяцев назад +1

      It's a trilobite, a creature that roamed the ancient oceans 541 million years ago. Though it was only the size of a quarter, I wanted to make a massive version to show the detail of the amazing little creature.
