Please note guys: I pronounce the name "militare" the Italian way, this is just personal preference, it simply means "military" or "militaire" in french, either way is correct as they all mean the same thing.
    Thanks for watching!

+The Urban Gentry Hi, seeing you with the NATO strap made me wonder: Is the Nato Strap designed so that you can wear the watch over a winter coat? Or is the grey strap you are using is just in the 'NATO Style', and not as long as a regular military issue NATO strap?
Also, for noobs like me you , would you please show us the proper way apply a NATO strap to a watch, and the order of operations to 'strap yourself in' so to speak?
Thanks again for another excellent video.
      Regards

I just received my 2019 Squale Militaire. It's not the most expensive watch in my collection, but it's my favorite. The Militaire suits me to the bone. I thought my 6.75 inch wrist was slim, but your wrist is a twig haha! I'm always amazed at how large these 38 mm to 40 mm cases look on you. My Miltaire gains 13 seconds per day. The colored lume is just ok and I'm able to see the time later at night with my 57 year old eyes using averted vision. The military inspired face with the colored lume and oversized indices, the 40 mm case size and domed crystal, along with the submariner styling are what make this my favorite.

    Hello TGV,
I totally agree with you on this Squale over the Steinhart. Until you introduced my to the Squale I really wanted a Steinhart. I have to say I preferred the OVM version 1 over the version 2.
The Squale is a very attractive watch. If I didn't want the Squale Blue Ray so much I would be tempted to buy this one.

Bought the Squale 1545 mil based on your review. Love the watch and your reviews. FYI, found a posting of the original Squale 25 ATM from the 1960s. It looks nearly identical to the Squale 20 ATM. Maybe Rolex is an homage of Squale?!

    • @O-B1
      @O-B1 8 лет назад +7

Squale was back in 1950 to the year. The 1st Submariner? 1953. History is written by the winners. I love it because that makes the watch mean more to me, and more unique. Also, the Rolex Submariner is the single most counterfeited watch. People are walking around with fakes and not knowing it.

    • @mikec3454
      @mikec3454 4 года назад

@@O-B1 So because it's counterfeited it's somehow inferior? lol Please... The Submariner is a victim of its own success, that doesn't take away from how great of a watch it is. There's a reason you see fake Rolex watches, just like fake Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Cartier, etc. There's no market for fake Squales - criminals want to make money.

Thanks for the great video TGV! I had the Steinhart OVM and personally prefer it to the Squale primary the fact that the minutes graduation bezel and no date dial look closer to the Rolex. But the Squale is a great piece too and value for money. You can't go wrong with it.

Late to comment but to call this a submariner homage is a tat of an injustice. Google Blancpain 1545. Squale made these cases for Blancpain since the 60s. The current 1545s are just a tribute to their past. Such an amazing watch.

Has anyone managed to fit a 22mm Nato on this? I love this watch, but my extensive NATO strap collection is all 22mm. Even my smaller customized Seiko "Fifty Fathoms" has the 22mm lug width.
If I could change one thing I would go with the 42mm case of the GMT Ceramica. I know 40mm is more in keeping with the tradition but this Squale has an overall modern aspect since the finishing on everything is so well done. A modern watch with a retro flavor if you will. I also wish it did not have the double Squale logo. I'd go with just the top logo and add "20 ATM Militaire" at the bottom to emphasize the Italian lineage.
    Great videos as always.

Great review (as usual). I liked the looks of this one so much that I ordered one immediately after watching your take on it. I’m enamored with the dual Squale logos and the mid-century diver aesthetic the watch conveys as a whole. I also appreciate the date function, even though that feature may not be historically “accurate”. I previously owned a Steinhart OVM39 and liked everything about it except the lack of a date window, so I’m hoping the Squale Militaire will be the best of both worlds.
Looking forward to its arrival later this week which will make it my first new watch of 2019.
Keep up the great work. Cheers!!

    Greeting TGV
Your video have persuaded me into buying this watch which is somewhat hard to find around where I live.
With this pricepoint the quality of the watch is absolutely impressive. Unfortunately the lume pip on the 12 o'clock bazel had been pushed into the bezel somehow. And other comment from me is the bezel could be a little bit sharper (like the Submariner) so in the water/slipery condtion the bezel could be operate easier. So thank you for introduced me to this impressive watch I do enjoy having them on my wrist.
Ps.mine is put on the grey Zulu strap with PVD

Hello, would you still choose the Squale over the Steiny OVM 39mm? I am currently contemplating which one to choose and it is a hard choice as:
1/ I like the heritage and history of Squale
2/ Like the 15 min bezel insert as the 60min is to "noisy" for me
    but on Steinhart OVM
    3/ I like the no-date
4/ The metal hands (not black)
5/ I like the dial logos a bit more and the 39mm is better than 40mm but this is marginal
OVM is a bit cheaper but hardly a decisive factor. Things I cant decide is the fit and build quality.
What would you advise? Thank you

Personally I'd like an OVM at 39mm but with the lugs the Squale 1545 has. What I find unattractive about the Squale is the over branding and logos, the type faces used, and the date window. I also dislike the black hands of the Squale.

Another great review. I have to say, you've got me thinking about Squale watches. However having recently acquired a new CW Trident C60 600 (black dial, red bezel - a BEAUTIFUL watch!) I will have to wait a while before I add a Squale, but I can definitely see one being added to my meager collection one day soon. You are also influencing me with your love of NATO straps. I'm sure the Steinhart OVM is much more popular. Its bezel is more representative of the original and the dial is much more clean without the date. In terms of quality, it is a well known fact that the Squale 1545 and the Steiny Ocean One are similar.

I'll admit to being a handaholic, I really care more about the hands of a watch more than anything else. I love the hands on this watch. I also like the Squale design language with their fonts and logos. Very different from the either ornate or understated Swiss standard. However, while I understand that they are doing the MilSub-thing, I really don't care for the "fake"-aged lume. I guess what I would want is a regular 1545 sans the Mercedes-hands. *sigh*

I have both the Squale and the Steinhart Gnomon 39 mm., both wonderful homages to Rolex Milsub. I would prefer the Squale but why they put the date ? Meanwhile for Steinhart Ocean One 39 I love the " 1 " Inside the circle, a clear recall for the orginal " T " for tritium ... I am italian I should prefer the 1545. Now I am waiting for a good homage to Tudor Blue Navy Milsub. If you have any good suggestion ...

A pity that the 1545 doesn't appear to be available in the UK as it is a fine looking watch. The price is significantly cheaper than the 1521, which makes me wonder if the 1545 actually comes out of the same factory as the Steinhart/Grovana/Davosa, rather than Squale themselves, and the reason it's not available is because of some regional marketing agreement? The bracelet appears to have a much better clasp than Steinhart but the watch is very, very similar. On balance I would probably still choose the 1521 which has more tool watch styling, more elegance and features in the case anda better depth rating. Great review.

    Hi TGV,
I have been binge watching your videos over the last few weeks as I go down the diver rabbit hole. If you only had $1-2k to spend on diver is there a certain direction you would go? I have and Skx and picked up a steinhart GMT to satisfy a Magnum PI urge. Is there something in that range that represents an standout value? I started to order a Ginault but started to feel uneasy about the movement and lack of company info. Is it worth saving up something like a Tudor black bay or are you starting to pay for branding over quality? I know this is drawn out, but I appreciate any advice.

Oh man I've wanted to know your thought's on the 1545 for so long, I'm really happy you picked the milsub. I have a 1545 quartz 38mm I bought just for fun a while back, didn't think I would keep it, but it's somehow worked it's way into my rotation. Anyways I'd still love to see a PROPER TGV-style shootout between this and a Steinhart OVM if you can borrow one ;)

First, I would like to say I really enjoy your channel. Your Squale 1521 videos are the reason I found and subbed.
Another below 1k watch I would be interested to hear your opinion on the Christopher Ward Trident in general, as I've heard good things about the newer model. It looks like they are coming out with a similar military style with the vintage-looking lume (C60-38-AUTO-SVKK-C).

      +RaidenRIS Hello!
Firstly thank you for subscribing, and always glad to hear another 1521 fan.
Its a special club of people indeed!
Regarding the CWard, I did review and own (briefly) the previous version of the Trident, I am sure in time I will return to CWard. A great brand and very good quality/prices. The only thing keeping me is I have so many watches to buy first!

TGV. As you clearly state in your review this is great value!!
Like to see you review the Steiny against this piece and give a comparison.
Personally I would have liked 2 things to have been different:
    1. The crown down at the 5 o'clock case position.
    2. Minute graduation markers right around bezel.( as per Steinhart version)
IMHO it would retain that signatory Squale design.
Having said that your review was very professional!

Excellent review. Being a horological neophyte, I did not know of the Rolex Militare connection, so thanks for the background. Super page and super review. I enjoy the Italian pronunciations. :) Keep them rolling! (It was my minor with my BA in Spanish) :)
I noted some connections to "The Big Blue" in one of your videos. Fantastic film! :) Saw it in a Independent Theater when it originally came out! I do not recall seeing Squale watches in the film though. ENZO!!!! "Roberto, Mio Palmo" LOL
You are making the selection of the first Squale purchase difficult. :) Well done.

      +Bagpiper California Thanks AJB,
I think I will have to re-watch it myself for a little wrist watch spotting. Its has been decades since I saw it myself. Love Luc Besson, can't say I liked his recent offerings.
Regarding choosing our first Squale, I advise (in a very jedi-esque way) go with your heart and get the one that you think you will enjoy the most. Personally, however, I recommend the any 1521 above all,
They are IMO the best swiss diver around/below the $1000 price point without a shadow of a doubt.
      Best regards,

+Timepiece Addict Of course, but since they are so rare and extremely expensive, Its not even an option mere mortal like me, do IMO this is the best alternative if you really want a Mil Subby but can't find one or on a limited budget. Besides, even if I could afford one AND tracked one down, I would be scared as hell to wear the damn thing so even then I would chose an alternative.

Imho, if one is to buy a Squale, buy one with a colored dial and bezel. The black/black is just too plain, another generic diver/homage.
The colored pieces Squale makes are really what set this brand apart from other generic ETA brands. Models like the Squale Matic 600 with the sunburst Cyan dial and Cyan/polar white bezel, the Squale 500 blue dial/bezel.. this is what Squale does best.
As far as Squale va Steinhart, In my opinion Steinhart pulls ahead atm in quality with the way the pieces are machined/manufactured. Especially the Bronze Divers and the OVM , (at least in the case, the bracelet is another matter).
Again squale has beauty over Steinhart and other brands, so why buy one that does not exhibit this?

TGV-- how are the hands on your militaire? mine seem to be poorly cut--- and i will actually be sending back to the store (won't name here) since they were unable to provide a solution for nearly a year. they sent me replacements hands but it was for the mk2 which is not matte and a lighter yellow. when I say poorly cut I mean that the radium color is visible one side of the minute hand border instead of a clean black edge..

+The Urban Gentry this is what squale said: 'for the moment we don’t have a retailer in Europe'. Not exactly helpful. There are a few official retailers of squale in the EU.
