    As far as greasing ball joints goes, place a couple of fingers on the rubber cap for the socket when you're pumping grease in to "feel" the rubber cap as it expands. Stop pumping when the rubber cap is almost full to prevent overfilling and thus popping the rubber cap. Ball joints last a lot longer if they aren't popped open to the atmosphere, and it stops the accumulation of 'schmutz'. Learned how to do a lube service the right way back in the mid-60's as a lube monkey in a filling station when I was in high school.

    I worked for pedders suspension about 12 years ago . And doing old school vehicles from the 60's 70's are a pain in the ass can't just get a complete arm with bushes like now . Even a wheel alignment on those older cars takes hours shimming them did a Ferrari once , modern one still has this set up

    The trademark squeaky falcon suspension, when the EA falcon first came out, I found one that had the wrong size taper, (too skinny) in the ball joints in the lower arms. It had worn the hole in the spindle into a slot, from slopping back and forwards under brakes.. It only had a few thousand K's on it, came from the factory like that.. Commodores had four cylinders, Magna autos were all stuck in third, Sigmas were blowing smoke, and Camiras were just shit all round. ..We were still repairing HQs and XAs when I started as a panelbeater, now I could watch other people work all day, I don't even get dirty. Keep up the good work you guys.

    Nice technique for removing the bushes! I had the pleasure of doing this job with the diff still in the car. No room to swing a hammer. Had to make a similar threaded rod puller like yours, but it took countless attempts to get it lined up straight enough to shift them out. At the front I had a control arm with a loose housing like you described. I didn't want to tac weld. So I put some grub screws into the bushes to do the same job.
    Discovering the issue was funny. Just did my wheel alignment and was amazed at how well the car handled. Hit a pot hole and heard a dull crack. thought it was just the spring settling. But then noticed the handling changed. The car didn't track well over bumps anymore. Had a look underneath and finally saw the bush had popped out. Hence the need for grub screws.
    Love your vids, especially the Holden's.

    Differences ---front lower bush

    2/Heavy duty bush fitted to 1ton ute
    3/ v8 engines wear the standard bushes real quick
    H/D bush construction from Mackay bushings company . The hd bush has a larger diameter inner tube therefore less rubber =less movement = less wear

    One tip I found with swaybar bushes, you dont need urethane ones, just tighten them real tight when car is jacked up. Tightens the swaying alot because now they are in a bind and so far has lasted for years!

  • @PiDsPagePrototypes

    That opening :D :D Cars come in boy and girl - you can tell them apart by whether they break down on the side of the road (boys), or refuse to be stuck on the side and slowly get home (girls).
    And, wholley Faq, those A-Arms look like they'd weigh three times what the ones in a Valiant do, no doubt from the bracing needed for Coils rather then Torsion Bars.
    Those wedges are a right pain to find a workshop that can do the alignment properly now, almost as rare as finding a shop that can do Val's alignment right. Thing is, get a Falcon, Kingswood or Valiant aligned right on new bushes and ball joints, and they can ride just as nice as a new car.
    Greased ball joints handle better - different internals with closer tolerances.

    we did the same here in the states when the bushings had to come out . we would either cut the whole piece off and weld in a new piece of iron tubing the right size or do like AL and do a 3/4 round patch to make them stronger while you had them out you should have plated both trailing arm's with steel to strengthen them. as for the ball joints there is no problem welding them in considering how old the car is the next time it gets done will be a long way off.

  • @Hartbreak1
    @Hartbreak1 4 года назад

    Another thing about urethane bushings on motor and transmission mounts. If you unfortunately crash your car and have some damage that may have made the bushings fail or warp, with urethane bushings that damage may be transferred to your engine block or transmission case (or both) instead. These bushings are great at not failing... so if you value your engine or transmission on your street car you're better off using high quality replacements instead of urethane.
