This was one of my favorite movies as a kid! Eddie Murphy is so great in this and it’s so quotable. No one reacts to this movie so I appreciate you doing it. It’s wild to me that more people haven’t seen this film. It’s a classic to me!
This movie has always held a special place in my heart. Eddie is so quotable. And I saw this on a cruise ship when my extended family cruised to the Bahamas. I spent the whole trip watching movies, dancing on the dancefloor in the afternoon, and drinking Shirley Temples in the bar. There was an arcade on board too. The Golden Child always makes me think of that cruise. Also, fun fact, the Golden Child is male, but the child playing him was a shaved-headed little girl. She grew up pretty! Love the movies you react to Jay! You help me relive my childhood and teens!
Even though the "Golden Child" in the movie was portrayed as a boy, "he" was actually played by a female actress, J.L. Reate. Her real name is Jasmine Reate. She was born September 14, 1979, in Monterey County, California. "The Golden Child" was the only movie she appeared in.
I remember watching this back in '86. "The Golden Child" and "Big Trouble in Little China" is a great example of one studio trying to coopt another's project and beat them to market with a similar film but I love them both and like to think of them as in the same cinematic universe.
I absolutely love this movie. Fun fact, the Golden Child is actually a little girl who played the part of the golden child. Thanks for watching this. 👏👏👍
5:15 Charlotte Lewis (The young lady trying to recruit Eddie Murphy's character) was about 18 when her scenes were filmed. Charles Levin, the TV show host in the beginning of the movie, died a few years ago after getting his car stuck out in the Oregon wilderness and falling down a 30 foot cliff/slope while searching for help. And the 'Golden Child' was played by a girl.
A bunch of guys I assumed were frat boys or something of the sort were sitting in the front row of the theater when I saw this. When Eddie Murphy appeared on screen, they said "Buckwheat!" in unison.
Underrated and very quotable. A LOT of funny moments from Murphy. Also, another underrated Murphy movie is BOOMERANG... a solid rom-com if you haven't seen it yet. And since you've done a couple of Murphy movies already, might as well react to the new one he's doing with Jonah Hill & Nia Peeples when that comes out.
This was definitely one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I can only guess this was when Eddie Murphy was more of an R rated star so more people who would have enjoyed it never got to see it. Thanks for bringing it back for me!
Funny, you made the reference to Inspector Gadget. Because the voice of the Dark Master is Frank Welker, longtime voice artist, who was part of that second wave of voice artists that came in the mid-1960's until the 1980's. He first used that voice for Dr. Claw, then later for Darkseid during the last two seasons of Superfriends and Soundwave in Transformers (electronically modified). Since 1969, he has been the voice of Freddie in Scooby-Doo and, since 2002, Scooby himself. Other characters he voiced include Toyman, Mr. Mxyzptlx, Joker and Penguin in Superfriends, Iceman in Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, Megatron/Galvatron in Transformers, Kermit in Muppet Babies and Dr. Ray Stantz in The Real Ghostbusters, plus numerous animal characters, including Brain.
"Keep your thought as pure as the water." "Hey, this water ain't really that pure." "Un-heh, neither are you." Fun Fact: Although the Golden Child is referred to as a boy throughout the film, J.L. Reate is actually a girl. Location Location Fact: The house that Eddie Murphy stays in after his return from Nepal with the dagger is the same house that Steven Seagal's character uses in Hard To Kill (1990) to recuperate from a coma. Music Enthusiast Fact: John Barry was commissioned by Paramount Pictures to compose, produce, and record a complete score. However, Barry was taken off the project after creative differences and reaction to test screenings . Although Michel Colombier completed the score, a few cues by Barry remain in the film, and one, Wisdom Of The Ages, was released on the original soundtrack LP. As of the present, the entirety of both Barry's largely unused music and Colombier's final theatrical version score have been issued on a limited edition 3-CD soundtrack by Capitol/La-La Land Records.
I saw this in a theater when I was like 12 years old. It´s still one of my favorites. Takes me back. It´s dated, but I love the 80´s movies. And the soundtrack is also very good.
Great movie, I mean "golden" movie. There are so many 80's and 90's movies that deserved more recognition than they got. But all of them are cult classics for a reason. The Golden Child (1986) is one of them, Eddie Murphy was in his peak back there! Easy recommendation! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
It was many years before I found out that the Golden Child was really played by a young actress that they shaved bald for the movie.. She reunited with Eddie a few years ago when he was promoting Dolemite in Toronto.
Apart from James Hong - Peter Kwong (aka Rain in BTILC / Bobby Nguyen in Gleaming the Cube / Henry in Angel Town) and the late Victor Wong (aka Egg Shen in BTILC / Uncle Tam in Dim Sum - A Little Bit of Heart / Professor Birack in Prince of Darkness / Old Chang in Joy Luck Club / Mori Shintaro - Sam, Jeff & Mike's Grandpa in 3 Ninjas) also appear.
Even though I was a child when I first saw this, I was in love with Kee Nang as soon as that water pipe burst and spayed that shirt, lol. I had a puppy love dream about her.
I am very impressed that you remembered "3 Ninjas". That was a favorite of mine. Victor Wong was also in Big Trouble. Though it's probably not as well remembered as "Beverly Hills Cop", for instance, I still think it belongs in any Eddie Murphy collection. It's a classic, to me. It has its own style, compared to Big Trouble. For a similar film, but a slightly more contemporary feel, you might like Jackie Chan's "The Medallion".
Maaan, I saw this as a teenager in the movie theater when it was released. Apparently this movie was part of a deal Eddie Murphy made where he made so many movies they wanted him to make & he got a movie deal to make his own movies, Boomerang being the first of those. Then he recieved negative press feedback for having an all Black cast for Boomerang.
Big Trouble in little China is one of my all time favorites & They Live. My Two favorite John Carpenter movies. I think you will like Big Trouble in little China. 7:21
Not sure what you were watching back then but it was on television all the time I've seen this movie hundreds of times. Awesome movie just fantabulous! Excellent choice sir
Thank you! It's probably dependant on region. I'm in Canada and I know our broadcasting is weird and has to be a certain amount of Canadian content which limited how much US stuff we got.
Thank you! That was one of the few names I called out but messed up so I didn't keep it in the video. I called Frank Welker, Peter Weller by accident. 😂 He was the voice of Dr. Claw and most importantly Optimus Prime!
Sorry so late, Jay. I remember this movie well because it was so odd. But in a good way. I liked it a lot when I saw it on HBO in 1987. But like you alluded to, it got lost. Not sure why. Looking on Wikipedia, it did quite well at the box office. It is truly a mystery as to why it was immediately forgotten about.
This is one of my favorite movies, every few years I have a desire to watch it! I can't wait for you to watch Big Trouble in Little China, another favorite. And yes Charles Dance has not changed, I was looking at his movies and was like wow...he's been in a lot I've seen and I never realize it's him lol! The 3 Ninjas reference made me smile, a lot of people don't like that, but they were fun. Anyway great reaction as always!!
Way back in 1990 I was at an SF convention where the author of the novelization, George Chesbro, was one of the guests. A real gentleman and a scholar. The novelization was based on an earlier draft of the script is almost a completely different story; Chandler was a white guy- the studio was trying to land Mel Gibson for the part- and way more serious, since this was before all of Murphy's ad-libs and rewrites to punch up the gags

So the guy with the weapon you love; is also in Big Trouble in Little China, as of Lo-Pan big three. He's like Raiden; using Lightning to attack, and travels on the storm. The beggar is also from that movie; as Egg Shen. It's funny how many people are in both movies. Something else to mention; the knife, and how you get it is all apart of a video game called Unepic. It's has a lot of Pop Culture; cross references in it. Including the 'There's No Ground Here', and the 'I wan wan want the knife'
Nice reaction, Jay. I haven't seen this since the late 80s or early 90s. I didn't remember too much from this movie(except the boobs), damn one-track mind. LOL I didn't even remeber Charles Dance as the bad guy. I thought the first movie I ever saw him in was Last Action Hero. Can't wait for the rest. Oh, and I'm glad to see you are getting some more subscribers. 4K and rising.
I love that you are reacting to less common films because there are a few that people NEED to see but are not reacting to. One is called “Angus” from the 90’s. Another is “Bachelor Party”. And even another really good one is “Brainscan”. Those are like 3 that I have not seen anyone do. As well as “mannequin”
I saw this movie at the Adams Theater in Detroit, a very how shall we say, "urban" location. The theater was packed and EVERYBODY just talked thru the entire movie non-stop. It was pretty surreal for my teenage suburban sensibilities, but after a while it became so funny that I just went with the flow. I had to rent it when it came out on VHS so I could actually hear the jokes.
I was 7 when this movie came out in 1986. My dad took my sister and I to the drive-in movies to see it. I’ve seen it many times since. Oh and the Golden Child was actually a girl.
Fun reaction. I stumbled onto this one in a markdown movie bin. I think it was mostly overlooked. Eddie Murphy fun scenes , some magic and claymation. All makes a fun little adventure movie 🍿.
Saw this one originally in the theater, it was a double feature with Richard Pryor's "Critical Condition" . i havn't watched this film in 30 years probably. Not one of his best films but it is alright. The music cracks me up on how out of place it is in scenes for the mood of the film and what is going on in the scene. James Hong is awesome, First Comic Con i went to i 1997 my friend and i met him, we were waiting for him to come to the booth and was picking a photo for him to sign..he comes up behind us and says thats me pointing at the photos, lol then as he was signing he asked us if we wanted him to recite some lines from Big trouble..before we could answer he launches into lines from the film..it was a riot.
Sort of forgotten this one - but like pretty much everyone else here, I loved it as a kid, haven't seen it for years, but even via your reaction, it seems to have held up very well, and hey, who doesn't like an 80s Eddie Murphy movie - the man was on a roll back then. "Big Trouble in Little China" was released the same year as this, which also has James Hong and Victor Wong - and is a must watch, but I think you're on that already!
I love Eddie Murphy . he has done lots of movies that were great ... comming to America and see no evil hear no evil ... somehow missed this one so thanks for the great review .
I believe this was actually one of the biggest films of 1986 (Top Gun took the prize as the biggest). Eddie Murphy had been in one of the biggest comedies ever a couple of years earlier (Beverly Hills Cop) so his name and face on the poster was enough to bring in the punters. Actually I would say the 80s was the high point in his career, the only flop he starred in that decade was Harlem Nights. 48 Hours, Trading Places, 2 Beverly Hills Cop films and Coming to America - all 80s movies and all hits. He would sadly never again show such box office consistency, although he would still have a few hits peppered about his career in the decades to come.
Which sucks because Harlem Nights is one of my favorite movies. I feel like his career went another way after the general public rebuked it. He stopped caring.
Loved this movie as a kid, I think one of the reasons it didn't show on television and basic cable is the amount of times Eddie says "I'm gonna bust yo' ass," It's hard to remember, but they really did avoid profanity back before South Park. You seem to be enjoying the Eddie Murphy canon, so if you haven't seen it you probably would like "The Distinguished Gentlemen."
Eddie Murphy was going to get a cameo in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" (which he wanted...he was a Star Trek fan), but he couldn't because of this movie's filming schedule. :(
Jay you recognize tex cobb right there quiet guy that plays with the kid he was bounty hunter in raising Arizona n been in tons of stuff in the 80s mostly thug roles
I've always had the feeling that this was a straight action script that was written for your run-of-the-mill action star, but then they somehow landed Eddie Murphy and he did what he could to improvise some humor into it. It's too bad that it wasn't tailored more to him and that the whole movie isn't like the mere 20 minutes in Tibet, which is the best part. I think that it should've been a fish-out-of-water movie with Eddie spending the vast majority of it in Tibet, similar to what we got a few years later with Coming to America. It would've been so much better. I still have a fondness for the movie and watch it from time to time, but it's really just for the 20 minutes in Tibet.
In Tennessee during the 80s and 90s we had so many tv options I love watching reaction channels to see how people feel abotstuff I saw a long time ago. Please do heavy metal you did porkys after i suggested it heavy metal I can't find any reactions to it. Fair warning you going to have edit alot
I was 14 when this came out. We saw all Eddie’s movies in the theater. This one wasn’t my favorite by far, but I I I, want the knife, and Pleeeeeease were hysterical when I was a teen.
I don't think this was one of Eddie Murphy's most memorable movies, But it was better than "Best Defense" which came out in 1984, between "Trading Places" and "Beverly Hills Cop".
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid! Eddie Murphy is so great in this and it’s so quotable. No one reacts to this movie so I appreciate you doing it. It’s wild to me that more people haven’t seen this film. It’s a classic to me!

Great reaction/review. Keep growing that channel, man. You're doing great!

Yeah, Charles Dance (Numspa/Tywin Lannister) definitely has access to some fountain of youth. He was 40 in this and 65 when he started playing Tywin.

Does Tibet even have snow nowadays?
Yeah, Pink’s the best. You know what they say: Two dogs in the stink, one in the Pink.
The child is actually a little girl.
I love this channel!
Thank you!
James Wong is in his 90s I expected he looks like lo pan in the wheelchair form now
My dear, sweet brother Numpsy!
99 no and 1 yes is still a yes
It's a fun movie. I wish they would remaster it and polish the FX.
James Hong is in Everything Everywhere All At Once, which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it.
I haven't seen it yet but gonna watch it soon. Maybe my lazy Sunday movie. The cast of that movie seems pretty wild!
@@JayBondReacts I think I heard that it was nominated for like ten Oscars. It has to win for costumes and editing. Both were amazing.
In Tennessee during the 80s and 90s we had so many tv options I love watching reaction channels to see how people feel abotstuff I saw a long time ago. Please do heavy metal you did porkys after i suggested it heavy metal I can't find any reactions to it. Fair warning you going to have edit alot
18:25... Aint she the chick in True Lies?
Along with “Big Trouble…” you may want to try “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension.”
5:58 Oatmeal is evil. I knew it!
Can i recommend Lightning Jack (1994), its a great comedy that never gets recognition.
A lot of nods to this movie in the Ace Ventura universe.
I saw this theatrically and I only laughed once, the Knife ceremony when Eddie says “I I I want the knife.”
I was 14 when this came out. We saw all Eddie’s movies in the theater. This one wasn’t my favorite by far, but I I I, want the knife, and Pleeeeeease were hysterical when I was a teen.
The first dude she kicked thru the wall was judo expert/stuntman Gene LaBell(RIP) , and Ronda Rousey’s uncle facts
Charlotte Lewis was only 18 when she filmed this.
Wow. It's crazy to think this and Embrace were almost 10 years apart yet she looked identical.
Aside from this, GOT, and Last Action Hero - anyone know something else Charles Dance is the *best* bad guy ever in?
Homeboy said scrubb 80s
I don't think this was one of Eddie Murphy's most memorable movies, But it was better than "Best Defense" which came out in 1984, between "Trading Places" and "Beverly Hills Cop".
If he drinks the water he wouldnt spill any I guess that's a loophole
