    I never knew why I couldn't follow through with a hobby or got tired with them so quickly. But curating my own "Brain Off" and "Brain On" hobby lists has really helped me realize what my brain needs when managing my ADHD.

    me literally crocheting as I watch this 😂 I think for me, crocheting can be "brain on" when I start a project & am trying to figure out what I'm meant to be doing, but once I feel familiar with the instructions it's more brain off. Like you, I struggle to watch things if that's the only thing I'm doing, so crochet is often a go-to for me while I'm watching youtube videos.

    I love puzzles too! I appreciate what you said about the purpose of hobbies- it shouldn’t be another obligation.
    Personal story about puzzles- my husband and I have been together 16 years now. Through those years we’ve had some big moments where we had issues to sort out. And one particular big time “idk if I even want to be in this relationship anymore” issue my solution to have a time and space to talk. Lay it on on the table was to work a puzzle. We put the kids to bed and sat at the table and worked the puzzle and spoke when we had something g to say. And it worked to have something to occupy my eyes attention when I was so angry with him I couldn’t even look at him. And it gave me time to process what I wanted to say and helped me listen when he spoke just to have something to do with my hands. It was couples therapy. Hes not big into puzzles but I told him I needed this. And we evolved that into walks when we could talk more. And that was about 10 years ago we’re still married! So 🤷🏻‍♀️

      I love this! I think it's definitely something that would help me when needing to have more difficult conversations (or sometimes just any deep conversation), since I struggle with eye-contact and need time to think through my answers. Thanks for sharing! ☺❤

    • @Alicia-zf3nq
      @Alicia-zf3nq 3 месяца назад +3

      It's interesting to read this. My siblings and I don't talk that much but we have a tradition of doing puzzles around Christmas/NYE. Last year, my brother and I had our first deep conversation ever because we were the only ones still awake late at night working on the puzzle. The next morning, I managed to have an important conversation with my dad because he was already working on the puzzle when I woke up. Perhaps we both discovered a new technique to facilitate important conversations through puzzles

    • @mishelly
      @mishelly 3 месяца назад

      @@Alicia-zf3nqaww that’s so nice! Thank you for sharing it really is crazy how well that works! I think we all get so distracted by electronic entertainment too that it’s noisy don’t have time to reflect and think, workout puzzles of the mind or what have you. I wonder if that lifestyle in society is causing a lot of anxiety and stress as a whole.

    I think you're right about textile crafts being in the middle, but not just for the reason you said. Once you're good at a craft and have collected a bunch of sub-skills, you then have the ability to work on projects that will be brain off OR brain on, depending on what you're in the mood for. The possibility space is massive with these, and you can totally tailor them to whatever experience you want or need in that moment (once you clear a certain skill barrier, of course).

    I hope lots and lots of people get into gardening!!! Not too sure how things work in the US but over here (Australia) we have lots of monthly gardening magazines that covers topics from how to structure your garden to the basics. Gardening Australia is a great show that’s given some good tips. Most of my gardening knowledge though has come from volunteering in a community garden. It’s a pretty simple hobby (depending what you want to grow) but every plant has the same steps, just in different degrees. My only thing is to be educated on what’s invasive in your area as even if it’s invasive it can be sold in stores !! I also highly encourage people to plant natives along with your veggies.

    Im surprised you didn’t mention an instrument. Piano is my #1 hobby. I memorize everything so it can either be brain on or brain off. Learning a new section of a piece can be very challenging & definitely occupies your mind & it can be SO SATISFYING & exciting adding a new piece to the puzzle building on what you’ve already learned when things start sticking & you see the improvement before you eyes/ears. & then I just love playing the pieces I’ve already learned purely using muscle memory which is great cuz it takes like 25% brain power & I can just get really into it & feel the music as I play, which is also so satisfying & makes me feel really empowered like wow I’m just casually playing this impressive piece like a talented musician🥰🎹✨

    Such a true point about cozy games being different for different people and different times. I have been loving getting into cozy games (thanks to binging your channel while trying to recover from burnout), but I will never play one that involves time-crunch-task-management. I'm gaming as a break from work--I don't want to have the stresses of work in a game! 😂 But I totally get that a lot of people really love building worlds and communities in things like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley.
    Great video with lots of variety of recommendations, and more tools for our fun/relaxation toolbox! 🥰

    This was so fun! I’m a knitter and agree with some of the other comments about textile crafts and your own categorization as them in the middle of brain on and off. I have some knitting projects/ steps of a knitting project that are completely brain off because I’ve been knitting for years and can knit stockinette or ribbing without looking/thinking. But then I’ll have shaped sweaters, cables, lace, and color work that requires brain on. I love love the versatility of knitting for that reason and it’s part of why I struggle to do other cozy hobbies even though I’d love to paint and game more. Knitting is just so all encompassing for me!

    This felt so extremely validating. I've read several other comments that are referring to ADHD specifically and wooooow I feel so seen. I really appreciate this break down, because as an ADHD (diagnosed as an adult) girly I am very much trying to understand how to manage and support myself. I am always craving stimulation but at varying degrees and am only starting to learn that. I have moments where I didn't realize my brain is craving a "brain off" stimulation, but I only thought of the "brain on" activities that I have, because I was looking for a distraction. This also made so much sense to why I enjoy rebingeing my comfort shows especially in the background of other tasks. Thank you for this content!!!

    You CAN garden. Even a small outdoor space can be used for a big vegetable garden. I follow be a farm girl here on RUclips and she has opened up my world to the Greenstalk vertical gardener. In my apartment I only have a small patio out front and let me tell you I fit two of those out there and I have about 100 plants now growing food. you can even put them on a balcony. This has been so helpful. I feel like sometimes I just need a brain off activity but would just go on my phone. Now I have new non screen activities for when I'm low energy.😊

    May I add: calligraphy. You could practice with your brain on for 5 minutes till you figure out one letter
    and then just keep it going without thinking too much. That is one cool skill to have, you might even feel like designing your own fonts

    Listen, I LOVE gardening, and have taken over my bf's back patio with grow bags. It is super fulfilling and relaxing, but it's definitely not a cheap hobby. Just a caution because I know sometimes jumping into new hobbies can become stressful when you don't really budget accordingly. It's been a very slow building hobby for me even from one year to the next, but I HIGHLY recommend everyone try growing and nurturing something.

    The best hobby I have is DnD. Great release, great brain on hobby. Plus you have "homework" for it if you level up or if you figure something out about your character. It's a great creative outlet for me and I get to socialise with like minded people.

    Thanks for another great hobby video!! So fun!❤🎉---I love coloring so much! I have an artistic background and can get so serious about say sketching. Coloring books lets me play with colors, add shading, but still relax my mind. The picture is already drawn and my brain knows the only goal is fill in the picture. I get to create without the pressure I put on myself. 😊😊

    Thank you for the cozy chat! For me reading is a brain off hobby unless I am reading a book where I actually want to learn or remember something. Fiber arts for me can be brain off when I'm working on a granny stitch project or a Raglan sweater. Because I don't play video games that often they tend to be more brain on for me. I've enjoyed them still, except candle tale hahaha. Really thought I would but I was googling so much to get through tasks that two hours in I wanted my money back 😅🤣.
