I Bought The FINAL BOSS Of Mini Coopers... But It's Already BEATEN

- The last time I bought a cheap "John Cooper Works" it wasn't at all. It was just an S with the JCW Aero package. This time I finally picked up a REAL John Cooper Works R56 Mini for far more money, but I might have overpaid. I don't know what's wrong with it yet but it has some serious problems.

I bet those are the toughest 138,000 miles any car has ever seen.
“Sign Field”
Now I feel old!
broke me
i don’t understand why you would buy those pos cars…ever..
I can’t get over how people trash cars when it is likely the most expensive thing they own 😂 like how stupid can people be… but step on their sneakers and they are ready to shoot you
I was just thinking about this last night. Now I'm going to sound old here, but was watching Antique Road Show and someone had a piece valued at $30k. They freaked out and said they need to start storing it somewhere much safer. If they're like many people, I bet they own 1 or 2 vehicles worth that much and completely neglect them. Makes no sense. Sure they're almost all depreciating assets, but expensive and should be cared for!
Buy 5 mini coopers….get 1 that sort of works. Yup, it’s a mini thing!
LPT: Never buy a car that has stickers all over it or one that's been poorly lowered. This car also looks absolutely destroyed for the age and being a top trim version of an enthusiast car.
Cross threading on that level is done by people that feel the need to use power tools on everything and cant be bothered to ensure the bolt/nut is properly started. My shop is now replacing a $1000 subframe because a "tech" managed to strip out two captive nuts. He said the bolts for the diff were hand started, I think he got about a half a thread and sent it home with the impact. Uga dugga.
1:49 The factory is actually in England 😂
Gen 3 is made in Germany right?
@@gomd3rdNo, the 3rd generation was mostly built in the UK, with some production in the Netherlands (all convertibles from 2015 on were made in the Netherlands, and some hardtops/hatchbacks). The 4-door version was exclusive to Cowley, as was the Clubman. Paceman was Austria, the 1st gen Countryman was made in Austria, 2nd gen in the Netherlands, the current, 3rd gen Countryman is built in Germany (the Mk3 Countryman is so far the only MINI to be built there).
I’m not surprised of the extent of stripped and cross threaded hardware. This boy racer was owned by a poor mechanic at best yielding a harbor freight power ratchet and went to town. This is a true example of a vehicle ruined by its owner.
That's it, powered tools...
It doesn’t matter who had it or how it was driven. Over 100k everything breaks. Even my mom’s non turbo that she bought new still completely fell apart after 100k.
I've got two Minis - a 2012 Countryman and a 1963 Traveller (wagon). Minis are awesome! 👍😎👍
I am in the same boat. I have a R53 mini and a minivan
The 1963 Traveller is a real mini though, not this BMW crap box.
MINIs o'plenty here too - 2013 R60s, 2018 F56 JCW, 2023 F54s, 2023 F54 JCW, 2024 F56 JCW - all in the drive or garage.....
Rebuilt a wrecked r53, working on a wrecked f55 now.
I had an S clubman. The N14 "Prince" motors in this generation are NOTORIOUS for timing chains prematurely slacking out and grenading the top end. My 1st N14 engine let go at 34K from the timing chains, the 2nd motor died with 84K on the odometer from the same thing...... The worst part is BMW finally agreed to replace the 2nd motor again for free ($14k job at the dealership) 5 days after I panic sold it for $3,800. Absolutely broke my spirit and heart. Even after all of that it's still my favorite car and I miss it daily. Cars. Are. Pain.
I also had a ‘09 Clubman. Sold it with 29k miles in 2017. Handling was great and miss the car sometimes but wasn’t worth the headache. Pain points include the plastic thermostat housing (mine leaked with under 5k miles), oil filter housing issues and plastic water pump impeller. Germans and the French love using plastic in critical parts.
Fixing and flipping cars is really this channels sweet spot. 👌🏻
Super knock is when the piston is still moving up and the ignition happens before the spark. That red handle in the glove box is a plug that goes on a new valve cover in one of the PCV ports(you dont need it). The pops and bangs wont happen until the engine is warmed up. JCW's have different struts than the S models. Yes valve seals are a problem in these cars and is most noticable when the engine is warm and you hit the gas after its been idling for a few minutes. Also the hard starting is a symptom of a HPFP going out, but with the mods and tune its hard to say.
Truly enjoy the mornings I can wake up to a JR video and a cup of coffee. Thanks for all you do sir.
Slammed car= People who like to replace their exhaust system frequently.
Pretty sure most people in my city with slammed cars already got rid of their exhaust
slammed car = no exhaust
That is what the noisy neighbor sticker is really saying.
Just imagine some scrawny foo foo hair boy getting out smelling like vape
Sometimes it’s absolutely insane. What people do to a really nice car. I have confidence you will make her whole again😊
The speedometer is in a great location, the only better place would be inside the glovebox.
It's also indicated (digital) on the steering wheel tach which I'm sure for this car is broken....
Love this , owned a 03 and a 06 S , drove. JCW insane car ! Can’t wait to see what you do.
I'm sure you'll have it figured out in no time John. My wife wants me to get a Mini but I just can't get behind the idea.
The sound in the shop is amazing. You’ve done a great job getting the sound good compared to when you first bought it. Sounds studio good
Racelands with an eBay heart shaped oh shit handle tells you ALL you need to know about the previous owner!
I know a guy with race lands on his mini and he said they're the roughest, shi*tiest ride he's ever had on a car. Said he canceled his raceland sponsorship because they wanted him to lie about them. 😂
That interior is known as a REDWOOD interior! I have an 08 JCW with that same setup. Worth alot of money its a shame somebody knifed the seats. Love that bubble nav screen...definitely a good find
Ls swap it and turn it into a "John Ross Works" 👌
How about a “John Ross Goes” Edition?
Yesssssssss do it
They may have had a drive shaft pull out because the lowering yanked on the shaft too hard. Then filled the box back up with regular engine oil after it drained through the hole from the shaft. With extreme luck, you can push the shaft back in, put proper oil in the box, replace the racelands and be good. Not saying the engine will be good, but that's for another episode.
Love watching one of my favorite enthusiast car collectors buy all these Minis, especially after I spent way too much money on a beat up RedBull Mini Cooper a couple months ago😂
What I would give for a Redbull Mini 😳
No doubt John Ross, you have a great channel. Always interesting. Thanks for what you do.
Hold on to your butts, folks! Buckle up for this rollercoaster ride of a Mini. This JCW looks amazing, but the plot twist with the dead battery and mysterious oil puddle had me cringing. Can't wait to see what magic WatchJRGo works in the next video to bring this beast back to life
I'm so old, when I hear JCW, I think JC Whitney (are they still around?)
I think only on-line - no more catalogs 😞
More stickers equals more horsepower. Same goes for racing pedals.
John cooper works John cooper works John cooper works John cooper works John cooper works John cooper works
I saw part of this on the last video, hope it works for what you're planning on doing with it. Looks decent so far, hoping for the best, watching now.
It was hiding in the row of cars out front 😛
@@WatchJRGoWell you do have a bunch around so could have been any one of the fleet but seems like a fun car to play with in the right spec like this one is 👍
Seinfeld, JR!
Looks like the Gilmore Girls coffee shop logo 😂
@@WatchJRGo never watched that show.
@@WatchJRGo didn't watch Seinfeld either.
@@WatchJRGobro shame for knowing that
Blue connector at the front is for the electrical water pump use to cool down the turbo when the engine is shut down
I’m sorry, “A-pleaks”? Hahahaha
Part it out! Part it out!
The n14 engine in the S isn’t the same as the n14 in the JCW. The JCW is lower compression with forged pistons. I believe my JCW is 9.5:1 or 10:1 versus 11:1 on the S. When my transmission died and was replaced under warranty, it took a month to get because the dealer had to order it. The S trans is apparently not the same and I believe the input shafts are different because the flywheels are different enough not to be interchangeable. That dart and die sounds like a High pressure fuel pump to me. Had mine replaced one e in warranty and again 4 years later
I agree with the HPFP issue. Same happened to mine. I rebuilt the pump myself and fixed the problem.
Those door chimes sound like the Oompa Loompa intro from Willy Wonka.
Those heart shape grab handles have to go, along with the decals on the glovebox. After the mechanical work of course. But they are horrid.
You know how to cross-thread everything... Impact!
I also had the “Super Knock” code when my timing chain had streched to the point of destruction. The valves in cyl 1 kissed the piston and b my them just enough to keep them from seating. Oh, then blew the head gasket. So fun stuff but I still miss that car
Valve stem seals chillin in glove box XD
I was hoping when the navigation lit up, you'd say we're not in Kansas anymore lol. If you weren't in Kansas, maybe the hack gob the previous owner did would disappear.
I don't care if you flip car's, or take them apart to sell parts, because you're always doing something interesting, and i like it that Eric is helping you, because he says some funny stuff out of nowhere. I like these Mini Cooper's, hopefully you can fix the JCW, sucks when people start modifying and cutting wire's. Those original head lights would have been nice. That poor little mini has had a rough life, but you are pretty good at sorting these kind of messes out.I really don't understand why anyone would want their car that low to the ground, one bad pothole, and your done, plus it's gotta drive like a damn lumber wagon. On to the next, G-d bless.
You can write damn, but not God?
@@MazichMusicPeople would like you more if you didn't shove down your beliefs on them randomly.
@JR I've got headlamp washers on my R56, I wish the headlamp and windshield washer functions could be separated... any suggestions for the sagging sunshades?
Got to love a JCW 👌🏻
I've seen a super knock code on an E9x BMW. Walnut blast, plugs, and coils took care of it.
That would be a nice little touring car to fix up and keep. It looks like something you would like and would be perfect for day trips.
You were in KC? I didn't see you. Based on the map display, looks like it was near/around Lake Quivira.
I have an R53 JCW. I think one way to tell if its factory in the 1st gen is the serial number of the JCW kit on the valve cover. Would sell if you want another one!
at some point i heard "Junk Cooper Works" .... 😂
An Mini R50 with an automatic? I am surprised it lasted that long. The CVT transmissions are awful in the Gen 1 modern Mini R50’s. Heck the 5 speed manual transmissions are awful in those Minis.
I am glad JR can wrench like a beast as I would not touch an R56 Mini. Like the look, like the size but just a nightmare as far as keeping them running.
I am sure he will do it all over the top but man it is throwing good money after bad with the 2007-2013 Minis. Fun? Yep. Frustrating? Absolutely.
I look forward to JR really getting the Mini bug and buying a Mini R53 slicktop and swapping in a Thumper head (some say better than JCW), 17/19% supercharger pulley, swapping out old suspension for new and ripping around town / the track in that thing.
I will be watching this content.
The Drivers Seat: check Willmek Mini Parts in Ohio or AllMAG in Tampa - two Mini breakers who I have worked with for Mini parts.
Where can I find your car parts store? I have a friend with a mini in her garage that needs an engine.
GoRecyclers.com but I don't have any of the engines listed yet
Just curious, any update on what fluid was in the 2019 Chevy Equinox and what it did to cause such problems?
Either bad fuel, or something that wasn't fuel in the fuel tank.
In one of the more recent videos they spilled some in the driveway and managed to set fire to it; consensus in the comments for that video gravitated towards it being Kerosene. The other prevailing theory was AdBlue/DEF for Euro >=5 engines. Neither fluid is particularly suitable for burning in Otto cycle combustion engines 🤓.
(Never lived in the US, but way upstate in the country I live I saw a reputable-brand gas station selling Kerosene -- presumably for heating -- from normal looking and properly labelled gas/diesel pumps; and I can believe that to still be the case in most parts of rural USA, esp. where it gets bitter cold)
Two ways to get more space 1. Get a bigger shop or 2. Work on smaller cars 😂
That starting issue looks like a worn HPFP. It doesn't get enough RPMs at startup to maintain high pressure fuel to the rail. Especially when cold. So reving up during start usually allows it to stay running.
The r56 mini does come with headlight sprayers I also own a 2009 JCW mini clubman.. change that hp fuel pump ASAP and get ready to fix a lot of shit believe me 😂.. also pop’s and bangs won’t happen until car is warmed up then it won’t stop doing it 😂 Val stem seals I have to do to my own JCW so yeah, I get ready to do those as well.
Sport will make noises when driving.
Loving these mini videos great little cars
Even that 04 Base is still a fun car!! 🚗
Yes, I had a 2012 S and it was a blast. Very well made, put together car. Unfortunately at about 60,000 mi it started to become unreliable and unless you are good at wrenching like you are its expensive to own. Mechanics told me clutch replacement was 3,500$
Thermostat housing warped (its plastic!) Throttle body replacement immediately after so I traded it for a Veloster N.
Ambient sensor fault is probably because the front bumper is off. It’s attached to the lower front grill.
Hello JR 👋
$2500?😲 That's an awesome deal!
....for the seller...... that car has been ragggggged.... You'd end up spending about $5-7k just to bring it back to something you could have bought for $9-12k in much better shape
This car is gonna be stripped forparts, its all messed up
Ohhh ☹️💔
Hope the engine is alright ☹️
Very cool car.
I love MINIs but I think the price paid was about $2000 too much..... But you should be able to get the money out in parts - as much as I would hate to see another one parted out but it's probably the best "humane" thing to do to this one....
With all these mini’s I feel obligated to ask when will the premiere of, “WatchJR the Italian Job” air?
That puddle looks like the trans side of the bay, and I don't recall BMW OE MTL smelling that bad so it's probably not engine oil. And the auto window probably works; most BMWs need the doors closed for that.
that intercooler is really beat up bad,...at least the parts you sent me went to a healthy Mini S that will beat a JCW any day
Whoever sold JR this car saw him coming a mile away....this car looks like a total nightmare
That was a Sienfeld logo.
n14 engine, you are very brave, and with the poor American fuel, I wish you good luck and hope you save it🤞
I invite ya to come review my 2022 JCW here in KC when I get back from California. I work with the MINI JCW Racing Team and we have our first race of the year at Sonoma.
Flippin Mini's to pay them bills eh? OK I'm game.
🤪
And now we know the heartbreak of buying a mini cooper…
@01:49 'Made in Germany'?
Nah. No Minis are made in Germany. These are made at Cowley in the UK and the larger 'countryman' etc are made in Graz Austria.
But any JCW is just a terrific machine. Sadly John passed away in 2000 but his legacy certainly lives on in the Mini today.
If I remember correctly Pennzoil Syncromesh is pretty clear and doesn't stink too bad
Love this new style of format now buddy, looks like it’s working I terms of views….
God luck
Cant take him seriously with that hair 😂
I’m so surprised you don’t bring your Autel diagnostic on every car you pick up
I am not sure if it was the tires spinning or the wrenches turning that destroyed this JCW
That plug in the glove box comes on a new valve cover.
JR get an old school battery charger and you will buy many less batteries for your shop work and projects.😊
Hi JR. I really love these Mini Coopers jcw. You would pay a fortune for one of them over here in Ireland. I hope you fix it up, bro. Thanks 😅👋👋🇨🇮
My buddies e70 x5 would run like shit when his ambient temp snesor was broken and got wet. That might be a small part of gour cel lol
I miss the abarth, I offered 350 for it, but JR, didn't bite
Can anyone recommend an OBDII scanner? Maybe like the harbor freight icon T8 but 500 to 600 range?
Doesn't look like this John Cooper Works 😆
I'll see myself out.
Thank god minis started using the b48 motor in 2014 ish now they’re a proper car
It's one fast toaster
Good Evening John Ross
Hey Douglas! 🍻
"Seinfield" I bet they use Saw Zaws there
If you struggle getting out of the house by 7am I can see why you do RUclips
You must of slept well. You have pidgeon feathers
Those T-bolts are stainless steel and the threads gall badly if you don't put anti-seize on them.
20:20 Good thing you removed the Made In Germany sticker. Why would anyone put that on a British car?
Ah …. But was it a factory build or a dealer assembled, as that was an option back in the day. I ordered my 2006 JCW and followed it from England to the US….🤔….and, of course REAL JCW’s are supercharged!👍👍
Not to do with the Minecraft but I know that you have restored headlights that are Dall can you recommend a way to refresh dull headlights lenses
Mini Cooper.. Sorry stupid speak to text I should of proof read it first.. I've never even played Minecraft😅😅
Super knock will need the inlet valves cleaned
That plug is for the dipstick tube if you don't actually have a dipstick. About $30 on an Audi
3-2 or 4-3 "upshift" maybe?
I used to own a 2003 mini cooper S and that was one of the most fun cars I’ve ever owned. Drunk driver took it from me. 😢
Where are the videos like the Chevy S-10 that’s the Watch JR Go I like. I still want to see the interior fixed up on that. Let’s see it go to the track! Mini videos are ok but you need kiddie fingers to work on them let’s get some content going bud!
Classic BMW watching your car fall apart in real time
Good luck John with it and maybe you can make your money back in the video, German cars make great RUclips videos since nothing breaks down like a used German car
