Ok, totally skeptical of this but it bloody worked! I spent hours and hours at the pier, 300+ bait, caught 3 Barreleye's, 2 Coelacanth's and many many oarfish buy not the these last two. I genuinely thought my pier was broken or something, then tried this and after 3 saves, BOOM. MAHI MAHI. (Now to work for the trevally). Thank you!

PSA DO NOT DECORATE YOUR PIER! I spend 20+ hrs fishing off my custom designed dock and never got a single pier fish. Finally thought to kick the designs and I caught a blue marlin AND mahi-mahi in 20 minutes. Idk if placing items will affect it too but just to be safe keep your pier clean

Have literally spent hundreds of bait trying to get a Mahi Mahi in this game. At least 500, if I had to guess. So much bait that I just started to assume the guides saying it was at the Pier at all times of day were just wrong, somehow. I really wish they’d nerf the Sea Bass drop rates. Having rare fish be in the same pool as the most common fish in the game is so frustrating.
And the saddest part of it all is that the first one goes to blathers :p anyway you are right. The sea bass could use a nerf (OR PRICE INCREASE). Glad you caught the mahi mahi in the end :)
Holy cow! I’ve been trying to catch the Mahi-Mahi for days! Found this video and I finally caught one, completing my museum! I started with 30 baits. I used 9 the first 2 minutes and closed the game. The second game start and I caught it on my first bait!! THANK YOU!
This helps alot by cutting out the bait grinding, but I wish they would just let us turn off autosave already. This measly 2 minute time window isn't enough.
MANY thanks to you... and the people who said to wipe your pier of decorations/designs... I caught the Mahi Mahi (the last fish I needed).... after 2 years of trying 😂! I tried for about an hour after first watching your video ... nothing but seas bass and olive flounders. Kicked my designs off my pier, picked up the lights and decor & within about a half hour, I had caught 6 giant trevally and finally my Mahi Mahi lol Now to just get that spider crab to complete my entire Critterpedia! GENIUS!! Caught the first rare one after my third round and the other after a few more.. both within less than 20min total! Make sure u start your 3minutes clock when the little blue waiting circle on the top right corner of the startscreen goes of! I wasted quite a few bait cus it saved the game „too early“…

@@namikkou Very late to the party, but you can manipulate the game to force certain types of bugs to spawn. Like, put some trees in your inventory and take them to a bamboo mystery island. Eliminate all other sources of bug spawning like flowers and such. Only tree bugs (and rock/sea snail) will appear!
This method got me the giant trevally on the third save, definitely continuing for the mahi mahi, this is super easy now (subscribed rn) (Edit: one save later and I got the mahi :0 )
Wow!!! This worked!!! I had dropped around 150 bait trying to get a mahi mahi. No luck. I tried this and got it in my 5th save + got 1 coelacanth, 3 blue marlin, and 2 griant travellays in that time. Amazing!!! Thank youuuuuu
I’ve been trying this method for so many days now and I only catch sea basses and red snappers 😩. Also, my game has saved many times too, I’m using a chronometer to 1’20 now.
Sea basses suck because they only sell for like 300-500 bells, but red snappers are actually pretty good they sell for 3k each, so I suggest saving them to sell
IT REALLY WORKS!! Prepared about 30+ baits. 2nd reset got giant trivally, 7th reset got mahi-mahi. Remember to prepare more than 30 since sometimes the auto-save is faster than 3 mins. I'm a new player, and when i start looking at the appearance time of the fish, i just realize that i only got 2 days left (or wait several month) to catch this 2 fish. Glad only tried 20+ baits before finding this treasure map. THANKS!
I have been trying to catch a mani Mahi since the game came out. I let someone join my island and they caught a Mahi Mahi their first fish. They just walked up to the pier and it was already there.... FIRST...FISH

It actually worked! Can't believe it. Got the Giant trevally on my 2nd try and the Mahi-mahi after about 6-7 times (I didn't count the times I rebooted the game but it took me less than 20 minutes in real life)
I got both in 1h thanks to the auto save method ! I tried before with so many baits without any luck but I’m finally free ! Mahi mahi in 30min and giant trevally 30min later right when I said to myself it was going to be my last try for the night! Thanks for the tip 🙌
sometimes the auto save will happen very early so keep that in mind! once it saved only a minute and a half in and i swear it didn’t even show the auto save icon in the corner. so be prepared for some frustration but in the end it does work very well

Not sure how this is working for everyone else. It's not working I've been at it for an hour. My bait resets, but I still haven't caught any of the fish.
Well, the reset makes fishing easier for you because you can easily reset the shadow. That being said, the odds of catching the fish didn't change. This is just a way to catch it more efficiently instead of making bait all the time because that takes more time. Hope you will catch them soon, never give up :D

Honestly I was so unsure about this but I got the giant trevally on my SECOND attempt after wasting hundreds of bait and hours before trying this. Removing all decor from the pier also might have helped. Thank you SO MUCH
I rarely leave a comment, but this time I just have to. This method is really effective. In the past weeks I wasted 150+ baits trying to catch the giant trevally without succeeding. I watched this video 20 min ago and I gave it a try. I got the trevally after only loading the game 4 times following the method. Thank you very much!
i have to admit, i was really skeptical that this would work. i mean, what difference does it make if you use 20 stacks of fish bait in one sitting vs. a couple stacks, then quitting and reloading, and trying again? but surely enough...i spent like 90 minutes grinding through at least 20 stacks of fish bait (granted i caught a bunch of rare fish i hadn't caught yet so i'm not complaining) and didn't catch a single giant trevally. i tried this trick, and sure enough it worked on the third try.
Has Nintendo updated this now? I set a timer for 3 minutes and stopped after 2 minutes if I didn’t catch anything pressed home button then “X” to close the game straight away. Yet when I start the game again and get to the pier my fish food had gone. It seems to be saving a lot quicker than 3 minutes. :(
I generally don’t like using any kind of cheaty method for anything in this game but it takes forever to craft the bait. If they had added a simple feature that allows you to craft many items at once instead of having to do it individually then I wouldn’t be using this method. But as it stand, I don’t have the patience for the slow crafting system

I feel like I’m going something wrong 😭 tried this about 5 times and keep getting great whites 🦈 I’ve tried different areas of the pier and still no luck, if I catch one I’ll update
no idea if this still works. i really hope it does ive been hunting the mahi mahi for days now edit: it kind of works? i caught one after about 30 mins. sometimes the soft resetting didnt work and i lost some bait but thankfully i got one before it ran out and i started crying. i had caught almost 30 trevally before getting the mahi
the end of october snuck up on me and i realized i only have a few days left to catch the pier fish so i’ve been doing this for the past couple of hours and still no luck :( i’m gonna keep trying though! i just hope there’s not less of a chance because i’m so close to the deadline?? oh well. i’ve caught so many sea bass ahhhh. this method is still better than making 8000 bait though, so thank you!! :)
Quite funny. I used over 500 bait today (Without this trick) and got a truck load of Napoleon Fish, Blue Marlins, and Giant Trevallies, but not a single Mahi-Mahi... rather than collect up bait again, I gathered 20, and used this trick. After about 7 restarts, I have the Mahi-Mahi
I’ve used about 400+ fish food, and then did this method about 20 times. I’ve caught 4 giant Trevally, 5 Napoleon fish, about 1,000,000 sea bass and still no mahi-mahi. Damn
I’ve tried at the pier in the past, used maybe 30 fish bait, only ever caught a tuna or giant trevally. Never a Mahi Mahi! 🥵 Tried your method, still no luck! 😥

Bugs should be crafted as baits for specific fishes
And rare bugs will summon big fish, I HATE the clams
Clams should stack, and bugs should stack.

I've spent the last few days trying to catch a giant trevally with no luck. I've caught 3 mahi-mahi though.
worked so well, took me 3 restarts, got a ton of red snappers and 2 trevallies too

i have to admit, i was really skeptical that this would work. i mean, what difference does it make if you use 20 stacks of fish bait in one sitting vs. a couple stacks, then quitting and reloading, and trying again? but surely enough...i spent like 90 minutes grinding through at least 20 stacks of fish bait (granted i caught a bunch of rare fish i hadn't caught yet so i'm not complaining) and didn't catch a single giant trevally. i tried this trick, and sure enough it worked on the third try.

Has Nintendo updated this now? I set a timer for 3 minutes and stopped after 2 minutes if I didn’t catch anything pressed home button then “X” to close the game straight away. Yet when I start the game again and get to the pier my fish food had gone. It seems to be saving a lot quicker than 3 minutes. :(
I generally don’t like using any kind of cheaty method for anything in this game but it takes forever to craft the bait. If they had added a simple feature that allows you to craft many items at once instead of having to do it individually then I wouldn’t be using this method. But as it stand, I don’t have the patience for the slow crafting system

I feel like I’m going something wrong 😭 tried this about 5 times and keep getting great whites 🦈 I’ve tried different areas of the pier and still no luck, if I catch one I’ll update

Mine worked the first few times, but I just closed after 2 minutes and I opened it again to see I only had 5 bait left instead of 20 :(
Have you ever caught a blue marlin or tuna? those fish also spawn at the pier.

no idea if this still works. i really hope it does ive been hunting the mahi mahi for days now
edit: it kind of works? i caught one after about 30 mins. sometimes the soft resetting didnt work and i lost some bait but thankfully i got one before it ran out and i started crying. i had caught almost 30 trevally before getting the mahi
Only sometimes worked for me too. The two minutes seemed to have saves for some reason.

the end of october snuck up on me and i realized i only have a few days left to catch the pier fish so i’ve been doing this for the past couple of hours and still no luck :( i’m gonna keep trying though! i just hope there’s not less of a chance because i’m so close to the deadline?? oh well. i’ve caught so many sea bass ahhhh. this method is still better than making 8000 bait though, so thank you!! :)

Quite funny. I used over 500 bait today (Without this trick) and got a truck load of Napoleon Fish, Blue Marlins, and Giant Trevallies, but not a single Mahi-Mahi... rather than collect up bait again, I gathered 20, and used this trick. After about 7 restarts, I have the Mahi-Mahi

I’ve used about 400+ fish food, and then did this method about 20 times. I’ve caught 4 giant Trevally, 5 Napoleon fish, about 1,000,000 sea bass and still no mahi-mahi. Damn
Don't give up, and who knows, maybe you'll be the first to catch 10 milion sea bass :p

I’ve tried at the pier in the past, used maybe 30 fish bait, only ever caught a tuna or giant trevally. Never a Mahi Mahi! 🥵 Tried your method, still no luck! 😥
