Same here. I just randomly passed by the cliff river and saw a medium sized fish and thought, “Wouldn’t it be funny if it was a golden trout”, and guess what, it was. (Btw I already got the golden trout beforehand. 3 actually within 30 baits on the same day)

It took me over *300* fish bait to get a golden trout. Then I have "catch a golden trout" as one of my daily nook miles quest with a multiplier *3x* in the following week.

Here are some tips if you want to catch these fish:
1) Always go towards the beginning of the pier and not towards the end of it which is out farther
2) If the big fish is facing towards the pier instead of the shore it’s more likely to be a Trevally or Mahi Mahi
Tip no. 1 works! As soon as I read this, I grabbed my fish bait and when I came back to the pier there was a large shadow on the side already. And it was a Mahi-Mahi. My fish collection is complete!

I read tip #1 and had 60 fish baits in my pocket. I ran out to the pier & I caught the mahi mahi with my 57th fish bait!

Trying to catch these two by the pier on rainy day,
The whole day on the pier, no sight of trevally or mahi mahi.

Animal Crossing Yesterday Me & my friend went hunting for Oar fishes and coelacanth and In a day, caught 1 of each. Then My other friend came to catch some too and had Colacanth spree of 3 in like 5 minutes 😧

Coelecanth seem massively more common compared to either of these other fish. I decided to try 30 bait the other day on the pier during the rain and came back with 5 coelecanth to add to the 6 I already had in my house storage (2 of which I had found in random shadows earlier in the day). Still no luck with either of these buggers though.
I lean towards it being better to hunt these things in the rain. Sure, on one hand, 1 more fish in the spawn table (Coelecanth) means technically a smaller chance to find either of the ones you're actually looking for. On the other hand, they're so rare that the smaller chance probably makes absolutely no noticeable difference, and I'd much rather be catching the occasional Coelecanth to sell for decent profit than another. Damn. Sea. Bass. But I guess technically, if you absolutely don't care about bells at all it's "better" to hunt them outside of the rain.

I caught the trevally completely by chance at a mystery island! I had no idea there were even pier-only located fish, had no idea I was supposed to be looking for one, and almost never fish at mystery islands. I'm very happy for this little bit of luck. :D
Turns out you don’t have to fish off the end of the pier. I was taking a nice stroll along the beach thinking about how to murder Sahara when I went along the pier and along the side was a size 5 fish. I was expecting a sea bass or an olive flounder but when I fished it, it was a Mahi Mahi!

I caught both on mystery islands. I just always make sure to check the docks when I'm on mystery islands for big shadows, that way I don't have to use bait. I think it works well since I travel a lot, and the spawn rate seems to be higher on mystery islands for fish.

I have yet to see a dock on any mystery island

the TLDW version: Go to the pier and use hundreds of bait and get lucky. Also lots of crying.
It's worth noting that the airport dock also counts as a pier too and I have caught tuna and blue marlin from there.
The nice thing about that is if you go on a mystery island tour you can catch them by the docks there as well so you may have more success there.
Yea, I remember I was on a rare fish island and had a full inventory of snapper, knifejaw, oarfish, tuna and blue marlin. That was a fun island! Can't wait to visit that island once northern hemisphere has sharks.

Idk if this counts as the “pier” but I was on a random island getting supplies and I was about to talk to Wilbur to go home, but I saw a big fish shadow by the dock Wilbur is always on, so I just took a chance and bingo, I caught the Giant Trevally.

Yes, a pier is a platform supported on pillars or girders leading out from the shore into a body of water, used as a landing stage for boats.

I caught my 2nd Mahi-mahi the same way.
However, you don't always have to catch things by the pier. On my island, the general area of the pier counts as "Pier" location. I caught a ton of blue marlin and tuna far away from the pier, but still in the general vicinity/area of it.

I was hunting the Mahi Mahi and Giant trevally. Which according to the Animal Crossing wiki, they are 4 star rarities on a scale from 1 to 5 stars in rarity. Now I caught 5 Coelacanths using 63 fish baits while hunting the Mahi Mahi and Giant Trevally. Coelacanths are 5 star rarities, thus being rarer than both the Mahi Mahi and the Giant Trevally. I caught 1 Mahi Mahi and 0 Giant Trevallys with the 63 fish bait, the rarity scale is not adding up.
I think it may be because the Mahi Mahi and Giant Trevallies can only be caught on the pier, while you can catch a Coelacanth anywhere in the ocean.
I can tell you from the future that they have changed it now. Both have 5 stars now, and the Coelacanth is now 4 stars. I still don't have my Mahi Mahi, though. But three Giant Trevallies.

I seriously fished for 3 solid days mostly off the pier and did not catch a single thing that I needed for my museum until i turned on this video and IMMEDIATELY caught a Mahi-Mahi. YOUR VIDEO WAS GOOD LUCK MANNN!!!
I just realized that you can throw multiple baits in a row (the second bait you throw scares the fish that was caused by the first bait).
So if you were looking for the mahi mahi or trevally, just throw a bunch of bait until you find the largest size fish.
You know quarantine is getting to Zion when he starts getting existential over a mahi mahi.

Christian Eric Adams it has to be from the dock. Unless there’s a smaller fish in season you need to catch then just keep throwing more bait to try to get a large spawn
i feel like the bait never really helps? like it spawns a fish but they’re always either sea bass and other normal fish, never anything special
2:01 you can use Custimzation Kits when you feel that you Tools are about to brake to reset they Durabity, i use a lot of Customization Kits to customize my Tools to reset they Durabity and avoid breking them.

I've caught a Giant Trevally off the side of the pier on a random spawn... I was standing on the beach... But I guess there's a narrow spawn window that doesn't stop them swimming some way!
Today my sister randomly caught a golden trout and yesterday it was raining and I caught 4 coelicanaths
WOW, my Island got Raining for 3 days and didn't catch a Coalecanth, they are harder to catch, at least i managed to catch a Blue Marlin and a Sturgeon.
Bruh coecalanth are so common every time it rains i get at least one in 30 mins

I’ve caught all of the fish but the pop eyed goldfish and tHAT GODDAMN TREVALLY.
This may seem obvious but if you have a friend who’s willing to help, then that makes everything so much easier! On the last day of April my friend asked me if I’d caught to tuna or blue marlin yet, & I didn’t even realize they were gonna go away after that day. So she ran around the beach digging up clams & crafting bait while I fished & it maybe took us like 20 minutes for me to find both!
when may came, i went straight to the pier and the first fish i caught was a mahi-mahi! i was so excited but i only ended up catching the giant trevally a couple days later on a big fish island

Last month I was really struggling with the Blue Marlin, also caught off the pier. I spent days and days, my thumbs were sore from mashing A to get through the crafting animation for bait. Then I decided to try something different by doing a mystery island tour. Because of the spawn rates of fish on the mystery islands being much higher I’ve been able to catch new fish there far easier, and the airport pier on the island acts the same as the pier on your island. I crafted 50 bait to come with me and I kid you not, after 4 days of trying on my island, the first fish I caught of the pier from the mystery island was the Blue Marlin. I haven’t attempted these fish yet but I’ll be trying for them on the mystery island. The only problem of course, if you run out of bait there are no clams on the island to craft more so I will make sure to bring plenty.

Just a tip I found on TicTok that when a fish comes in to bite you only have to press the a bottom once, and your person will just catch the fish without you having to repeatedly mashing the a button. This tip would have help in the very first animal crossing LOL
Tman thanks! Hopefully that helps someone out, I know that already through. My reference to mashing the A button was to making bait. If you press A while crafting it speeds up the animation so you craft your item a little bit faster.
Lucas Mazzeo that’s hilarious I told you something that you already know, and in return, something I didn’t know that I can learn thanks for the tip for making bait a lot faster! Now I’m not sure if day 3 being on your island will count to catch a rare fish it’s so frustrating! But than I forget that coming from playing the very first animal crossing.. that they either forward time or go back.. but I really am trying hard not to risk that lol i don’t think I even have that option.
I was playing when the new month rolled over and the new bug and fish spawns were added. In about 25 minutes I had caught most of the new river/pond fish and the Mahi-Mahi. But I've yet to catch the Trevally. Although I honestly haven't tried that hard. Hoping I can get one eventually. It's the last of the new fish that I don't have yet.
I don't know if it really works or is just make-believe, but I followed your advice of standing at the end of the jetty and caught both a Giant Trevally and a Mahi-Mahi in less than 30 attempts. Thanks for that!

me too i already caught the giant travally out of luck (i didn't use fish bait, just found it) and when i went to the dock after a painful 5 minutes crafting fish bait after about 40 fith bait, Out came the Mahi-mahi!
I can almost agree with the "cast straight off" theory as that's how I caught my Trevally! My girlfriend caught the Mahi Mahi a couple hours earlier! I also would catch all my Blue Marlins from the straight position too! Happy fishing!

It took me 208 bait drops to catch the Mahi Mahi along the way I also caught the giant Trevally twice an Oarfish and as it was raining a coelacanth. I'm so relieved about 2hrs 15mins of solid digging, crafting and fishing.

So, I’m catching everything regardless because I still need to complete my “Cast Master” stamp but I did notice when catching the Mahi-Mahi you have to cast your fishing line directly in front of the fish to get its attention. If you cast to either side of the shadow and the fish goes out of its way to interact, its most likely a sea bass. (Also noticed this when fishing for sharks: directly in path - Shark, to the side - Suckerfish) Hopefully this helps someone ☺️
Sounds legit. I'll keep that in mind during my trevally fishing.
After having watched this, I crafted some bait and headed to the dock with an already-used colorful fishing rod. I noticed there was already a fish at the end of the dock, so standing as far back away from it as I could, I cast my line and caught a giant trevally without even having used bait! When I used it, the second thing I caught was a blue marlin, followed by some sea bass, horse mackerel, seahorses, butterfly fish, and a barred knifejaw.
Today I caught my first Ocean Sunfish, Mahi Mahi and Giant Trevally.
Today was a good day.

Really recommend trying to find rare fish on mystery islands.... Found two golden trout within ten mins of each other on one (no bait) and just now on a different island I got the mahi mahi on the pier on second bait

I think June is better for hunting for the Mahi-Mahi and the Giant Trevally since the oarfish wouldn’t be the fish you catch instead of those new rare fish. Trust me I’ve caught 7 oarfishes when I wasn’t trying to catch it with bait, I also caught them while going for fish like the coelacanth . I’ve only caught 2 mahi-mahis for right now.

Ok when I literally clicked on this video I was fishing at the same time and I caught a Mahi-mahi after probably 200+ bait. I’m currently trying to catch the giant trev. I noticed the Mahi-mahi doesn’t have as much vibration as a sea bass.

From one lazy fisher to another, after about 60 bait of fishing only on the corner of the pier, I did finally get a Mahi Mahi. So corners are still the way to go!
I was on the pier at one of the mystery islands when I first started playing and caught a Mahi Mahi. It was a random spawn.

I was wondering where that was. I kept looking for it, since I thought I remembered them saying it would be a monthly video or something. I ended up already catching every fish and bug without it though.
@@ShizuruNakatsu They do have an article on their website showing which bugs and fish are leaving at the end of the month, but that's the first thing on the topic I found and haven't looked for an article on the new fish. It would be nice to know which are new and which are leaving each month to be in the same place
Just download ACNH guide app for Android and iOS. It’s great. You can keep track of almost everything in the game. It also can tell (which is what I use it most for ) which bugs and fish you’ve caught and donated and it tells when bugs and fish can be Caught and where and says the fish shadow size and rarity.
Sometimes the casual Olive Flounder just shows up
Trying to catch these before the end of October so I watched this to get some hints and just as the video was ending I got the mahi mahi. Thanks for bringing me good luck ^_^
Omg this helped so much I caught the giant tree ally and the mahi-mahi in less then 15 minutes
I caught one with only 11 pieces of bait! But now I can’t find a trevelly...
Edit: I just realized... I’m an idiot. Trevelly’s don’t spawn in May.
I didn’t even know they were rare! Caught both one after the other just walking past the pier, got lucky because I never got the Marlin
I've caught both without even knowing that they were even a thing
I dug up almost 125 bait today and only caught a trevally. I come back for a few minutes to use the rest of my bait for the night and catch both in the span of 3 bait, I’m not sure it works but I recommend coming back later in the night if you can! :)
I have had 4 Mahi-Mahi, no Giant Trevally... just from random looking on the pier and seeing a large shadow. Something I did find is the first Mahi-Mahi I caught from the pier on a mystery Island so those count too and always be on the lookout for large shadows there.

I’ve caught like 10 total fish since the egg day misery. It honestly ruined it for me and I know I need to get over it. Lol

I caught a giant trevally on a mystery island, I was hoping it was an oarfish since it was my 3rd day playing ACNH and I thought it was some common big fish until my friend saw it in my muesum
