Thank God for your Father Todd!! It was an honor interviewing him and having him at our Vietnam premiere in Kansas and Arizona.
My father served 2 tours in Vietnam.
When he returned in 70 he never talked about his time in country.
I was 16 in 70. He died in 1990 at age 67 and i was 36.
I never asked him questions about his time in Vietnam I wished I had.
I knew some vets who returned in the early 70's and you could tell they had aged and their minds were always somewhere else.
A couple told me stories and I listened and I believed every word they said.
Your story touched me and I felt your pain.
Thank you for your service and I'm ashamed of my country for abandoning the Vietnam veterans when they returned home and for many years afterward.
I am proud of men like Ed that stepped up and served their nation. Thank you Ed!

Ed. I am an ex Brit soldier. English. Ex Paratrooper. I can honestly say I have never seen anything so powerful on any picture screen. It's not so much the events you talk about. It is your raw courage in Vietnam and that courage in telling these events now - says everything about you. I hope you get to meet Smithy your 90 Gunner.

The most powerful story I have heard. Thank you Eddie for your service. I was 11B at n the Guard in the 1980s . Some of my NCOs and officers were Vietnam vets. I was Lucky to never gone to combat but proud to have served. Eddie was right, we were and are trained very very well. God bless you Eddie.

My dear brothers,Delta 1\5 USMC, returned from VietNam, to try to live. They could not talk about what they had gone thru. Finally, they did with VAM bringing them together, thanks to Computers. Both died from Agent Orange very young, it destroys your organs. Thank you Ed, now I understand their pain that we couldn't talk about as Family. Sir, thank you for your Service to the USA & my safety. I cried & cried watching & listening to you. I feel a relief & understanding. I needed this, perhaps my pain will subside also, being left behind. God Bless You & all of the USA.

My grandfather was in Vietnam, hearing the part about blowing up corpses after counting them is what he was ordered to do with 109a howitzers he was a commander of one or more. it breaks my heart to know that those young men didn't get thanked for there service and were made to feel ashamed for a war they didn't start but were tasked with finishing. Eddie you are loved and will always be a hero in my book, If you don't make it in the gates of heaven its because God asked you to guard them. Your courage and strength will be a great example in this new world where most wars are fought with a keyboard.

Thanks, Ed! Your recountings of your time in 'Nam are the most painful veterans' recollections that I've ever heard. As a non-combat veteran and a friend of several combat survivors, as well as the brother of a West Point officer, KIA in an ambush less than 2 years post-graduation, all I can hope and pray for you is respite from the horror that plays out in your head! Neithet you nor your comrades did anything wrong! We asked you to make war, and you all performed magnificently. Every. Single. One. Eddie.I just want to say your a real human being.I'm 77 years old today and glad I made it.I served in the Air Force as a young man starting in 1966 with a break in service and flew with the 732nd mil alft grp out of Mcguire as a flight engineer 141-A aircraft.I've seen many things Ed,spoke to many Vets.I've been to Vietnam on only one mission and wanted to get the hell out of there asap.In my long military career I've had some close calls but what you have been through is many times greater service to our country.I salute you and have the utmost respect for your service.I hope you find peace of mind .I am proud to know a man like you and hear your story. No BS this is the most powerful thing I’ve ever read or watched
concerning that war. Your statement that PTSD is never diagnosed to soldiers who’ve never witnessed or watched or participated in the many horrific stories described in this interview and many more makes perfect sense and I have learned another thing to recognize a real American marine or soldier or whatever and realize PTSD is one step away from going crazy, or battle fatigue or whatever it’s been called through the years. And being assigned to Hue as your first aggignment ? My emotional experiences continued to increase the more I watched. The men you served with in that famous 101st , knowing that at least some our government sent to that country were as fine as any military man I’ve read or heard about, provide some solace and do help but will never erase the pain experienced by millions.I never once criticized or thanked a Nam vet and I would have went to that war but the lottery was initiated my first year eligible and my dad convinced me to not enlist. He fought in World War 2 so he was no coward and was very proud of America yet he would never tell us kids anything about his experiences.He knew why he argued as he did even though us kids never did. Not until his funeral did his friends share some war stories they lived through. Upon your return our entire country, and I mean everyone never mentioned it or wrote about it and we didn’t ask. I knew absolutely nothing about that war until the movie Platoon came out in 1986 ,and that took at least 10 years. My silence when not saying Thanks is a shame I will always carry and the one thing I’m most sorry for. Your interview and reliving your experiences could be noticeably seen on your face and it was so obvious that you were reliving great and deep pain. I sincerely appreciate your service to our country, whatever the true reason is, and now have a more complete understanding of what some went through and with no retaliation to the protesters,when finally coming home ,that would have also been difficult, but it’s another example of why some know, some need to know and all should be required to know. Again, Thank You. You deserve and deserved so much better. As a country, we MUST do better.

Alan, yes, therapy. A weight is lifted off their shoulders when they talk to me. I have been called a "psychiatrist with a camera!!" Ed was getting into some pretty dark areas. I have young viewers to consider when doing a public interview. I have not released this story for almost 16 years. Ed is featured in my Vietnam Remembered documentary.
I’m in the UK, have no connection to the war beyond a few ‘Nam films and books that I’ve read about it …it ended the year I was born, but this interview genuinely moved me to tears. It was a tough watch, but really brought home the human cost of war, even to those that survive the combat and make it home. Heartfelt best wishes to Ed…you made it this far man, keep doing what you’re doing.

This is very powerful and a noble cause. Very emotional and gripping account from these veterans. It’s true - those of us who are in the service or law enforcement - go and do what others fear to do. When I got back home after Vietnam in 1970, I did everything I could to put the war behind me. It wasn’t until I discovered videos like these on RUclips about 6-7 years ago that I started remembering and thinking back. I cannot remember details like some of these guys, most of it’s just flashes of memory. I can see the faces, but I can only remember a few names. I don’t think there’s been a day that I don’t have a small flashback of the war. You never know what triggers it. I volunteered, because I believed that we were going there to stop the spread of communism. It was a different world. 1/4 Cav. 1st ID. C troop 2nd platoon

Man this guy's emotional and psychological pain is palpable.
I don't usually cry when watching these type videos but Ed's story brought me to tears more than once.
And I'm so thankful and so grateful that he had the strength and the courage to share his remarkable yet tragic story.
I'm so glad he made it back home because he never would have had the children or the grandchildren that he enjoys today.
I so hope that he finds peace one day because I don't think he's there yet.

Two things. Before being drafted I worked with a US Marine veteran who had fought in the Pacific in WWII (he was also my Uncle's father in law). His manner of speaking, body language, grief and countenance was just like Ed's. One of the things his family told us was that his landing craft got caught on a coral reef and the men in the boat had to walk into direct fire from the defenders. The furniture factory kept him on out of a sense of duty and compassion. The second is that after I got home from Vietnam I joined an Army Reserve unit. One of the guys that joined had the same job as Ed except he fought in the Delta. He told me a couple of stories about using the flechette (beehive) rounds. He once fired one at a sniper who was up in a tree. The VC soldier looked like a pile of hamburger after getting hit. No one wins a war.

I spent two years in the 101st 1968-1970 but unlike Edd I was in a hvy helicopter unit stationed in the Danang area. I can't even imagine what it would be like to have gone thru what Edd had gone thru. What I did go thru with the rockets coming in and seeing another person die and also receiving a dear john letter while I was there plus a few other events also gave me PTSD but nothing compared to what Edd is suffering this man is truly a warrior and hero. Edd thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

I hurt for the torture you still carry from that War. You were changed so dramatically from your civilian self. Courage and Steel to this act of bravery as you confront the Hell and share it , and let the pressure valve inside your mind release a bit at a time. I pray you find comfort in that process. Ed, I thank you for your service to me, my family, and our country. My Dad and his brother were both drafted. He was on the helicopter on his way to the plane to take him over there when he got the news that his brother had been killed. My Dad got to come home because of that and never had to go and fight. He has suffered with guilt ever since. My Uncle had finished his tour and was coming home for R&R when he was blown up with a grenade. He was the only one killed there that day. I hate that I never got to meet him but am thankful that my Dad didn’t have to go.

After spending a couple of months watching and listening to every interview Larry had with the Nam boys, I loved them all. This one takes the cake for me though. A lot of Vietnam vets have passed or getting up there in years now.. when I was growing up I talked a lot to the WWII vets and Korean vets. The Nam vets understandably wouldn't go into it generally.. God Damn, I have watched nearly all of your videos like this and never has one touched me like this one, I cried my eyes out through most of it, and to know the pain Ed Masterson has endured and still endures hurts me so bad, THANK YOU ED THANK YOU SO SO VERY MUCH!!!
I can't thank Eddie Masterson enough for sharing this. My Uncle SSGT John T Dozier II also served in 101st Airborne Division, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry, A Company in Vietnam. He was killed June 18, 1971. SSGT Dozier left a kind and gentle 18 yo. When he came home in March of 71 we knew something had changed in him. SSGT Dozier volunteered for service in Vietnam and fully understood what he was volunteering for. John's father was a Marine in the 1st Marines WWII 1941-1945 he then served in Korea in the Army until his retirement in 1964. Thank you for your service.

I’d also just like to say, I realize a lot of people hated this war, even to this day, including myself. However, the fact is most of these guy’s, like Ed, went either because they were forced into the draft or because they enlisted thinking it was their duty to do so. Obviously our country was lied too about Vietnam, we know this now, but at the time these guys did what they thought was right. Which in my eyes makes there service just as valuable and important as any other war our nation has fought in. Our government at the time made it seem we needed to be there, to help. These guys were very young, patriotic and were the children of WWII veterans. I’m not trying to say the Vietnam war was right or just, but the way these guys were treated when coming home should be a learning lesson to all Americans. I hope to God our troops never have to go through what our Vietnam Veteran’s went through, never ever again. Bottom line… hate the war, hate the government, hate the politicians that sent them there, but please, don’t hate the troops… it’s not their fault. If you watched this video all the way through, saw Ed’s body language and really listened to him speak, you can see firsthand that Ed, will never be the same again. This war affected him for the rest of his life. If you’ve never been to war, never served, I can see where it would be hard to understand my sentiment. Trust me though, the best thing we can do for men like Ed is welcome them home, say thanks and most importantly listen too them when and if they choose to speak. They certainly deserve our love and support. Bottom line, War is ugly! Nobody really wins. A lot of people who die in war are innocent, or have no real desire to be there in the first place.
Rest In Peace to all the Vietnamese citizens, Vietnamese soldiers and American troops that died in the Vietnam War. And God bless those today, who never left the fight and are still battling for peace inside themselves.
Brian, this is perhaps one of the best comments I have ever received regarding one of my interviews. Ed's story is precious and very gripping. I love this man. @@VoicesofHistory Thank you so much Mr. Cappetto for documenting the stories of our Vietnam heroes. God knows these men deserve to be heard. In my opinion, nothing can ever forgive the damage done to these brave souls upon their return home from Vietnam. But I think recognizing and appreciating the service and sacrifices of those that are still with us today is certainly a step toward healing. I know nothing can ever heal the souls of what so many of these men saw and went through at such a young age. Lord knows it's not natural for human beings to witness such carnage and expect them to ever be the same again, but hopefully by listening to their stories, trying to understand the magnitude of what they went through, we can help start the healing process for them.

I served with the "Strike Force", 2/502 Inf, 101st Airborne, Bravo Company 1970-71. We never had anything like a "RCL" in my platoon, but during my tour we had less then 25 members in it. I saw my Captain twice in the field as we weren't his platoon and in the rear once at a Christmas "Stan Down". This man's story is pretty much how I remember my tour ... even loading up a body/parts in a poncho in a dust off. My heart breaks for the pain he suffers during this filming ... I could never do it.
Civilians do not like to hear about killing, and we as combat soldiers do not want to talk about it. There is no inoffensive term to describe killing, and there is no polite way to describe a violent death. After we returned from the war and many of us found it difficult to reintegrate into state side duty and/or civilian life, particularly after our experience in combat ... add to that, being hated by people from our own age group, we learned quickly to keep it to ourselves... At 73', those memories are just below the surface, and often visit me at night.
We never did anything to the bodies. We stacked them on the side of the trail and moved on. We figured they had a guy watching from a far, we searched the bodies for maps, information, but we respected the dead. It was another time.

I am absolutely moved by the courage of Eddie for him to be talking about the nightmares he lived through. You can see that it has consumed every part of his living being even all these years later. It is incredibly hard to watch but please I do not mean that in a bad way there is just so much raw emotion it is overwhelming to see how badly it really was over there. I love you Eddie, I am a fellow soldier myself, unlike you I served my entire time in garrison just training the whole time, I cant even begin to imagine what they put you through, you are a brave man for sharing these stories.
edit: just finished the interview, ed I return the salute back, I wish there was a way I could just quickly reach out to Ed and thank him and tell him that the sacrifices he made and are still making, as well as all the guys he was there with are not forgotten. I want to thank you Larry for these stories. Dad's first and my second cousin died in Vietnam. He was manning a sixty during a human wave attack and was killed by a sachel charge. He lived on our family farm. Two bronze stars etc. Another note,he was in the Americal Division...any other place in the country to grow up this could be troublesome but he would have been fine had he came home. God Bless!

My brother - John S Chadwick - is the soldier Ed Matherson spoke of. He was just a kid out of high school. He came back a wreck. Couldn't even speak to me. My mother brought him back from insanity. Malaria, shranel wounds, teeth fractured, haunted. Haunted all his life by Viet Nam,then the first and second gulf war. And rough childhood. I loved him so and he died August 8, 2022 after long fight with Parkinson. Like seeing a gho

I was a 9th ID infantryman in 1968. We were in some hot stuff one night and they brought us out a 90 mm recoil-less rifle on the night resupply. None of us had ever even seen one before and we had no idea how to load it or fire it. The biggest thing I had ever trained on was a 3.5 rocket launcher.........It's a good thing we didn't need it that night or we probably would have blown beach other up trying to use that thing.

great thing you are doing for all the forgotten voices of the military. I was in Germany in 70 I met many guys still in Germany from their wounds in Vietnam. I heard so many stories directly from the ones who were there.
