In this interview, Thomas A. Ross describes his experiences in Vietnam with the United States Army. He relates his father's experiences with the 8th Air Force when he was shot down over Belgium and rescued by the French underground. His father would describe what flight conditions were like, with the cold and the constant threat of German fighters. He tells of his childhood and spending time outdoors with his grandfather. His family moved to Pensacola, Florida, where he witnessed gun batteries being set up on white sand beaches during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He recounts watching two Marines drag a fellow Marine to safety and how that motivated him to enlist. He details the steps that led him to Army Special Forces. He describes his training and compares it with conditions today. He recalls several experiences in Vietnam. He discusses his post-war life and career.
He sounds like a great guy and great officer. The effort he made to connect with his men around him is very admirable.
THIS stuff is movie material !!...and Tom Ross and all Vietnam combat vets are TRUE AMERICAN HERO'S....God Bless them ALL !!
What an interview....a soldier`s soldier.....what an American..speechless at how Mr. Ross told his story...gotta get his book.....wow...

We're you around back then? The man went and fought an illegal war where he had NO legitimate right or reason to be He enabled his Government in its dysfunctional foreign policy. He was an invader and aggressor. His time in Vietnam did NOTHING for American freedom, security and safety...win or lose. It was pure arrogance and paranoia that made his Government send him there...and he supported that.
There's always a bigger picture. You should rethink your heroes.

@@markwilliams9201 he copies and pastes his comments on all of these videos. He would say to your argument that they had a choice and should have moved to Canada. I know this because I have asked him the same thing you did.

Been watching a lot of these Vietnam veterans videos for the last couple of years probably. I'm English and was born in 1970. They're always interesting and often amazing. Can't get my head around how much your young men gave in this conflict, and only fairly recently has that sacrifice been recognised. These histories are so valuable to be recorded and remembered. Thank you for sharing your often painful memories.

Mr. Ross, well done sir. That experience of being up all night not knowing if the village was hit by the 175.....did you ever get the opportunity to let that FAC know that his comments the day before affected you? He really rattled you....needs to understand the powererful effects of positive/negative influence.
I had similar stress in my time in the service of my country's military. Only, my experience of being 'up all night' lasted more than a week.
It aged me...I felt years older when it was over. I imagine you felt similar.

You had one job to do - look into this wars reason - and you didn’t. These old white men in DC played all you kids for fools. This was not a just war - we had no business going into someone else’s country with guns to tell them how they should live. I offered my brother a ride to Canada - it was the bravest thing I could do. I protested this war every day and nursing school was my next step to get myself to Vietnam to save lives. And then write about what I saw. If all the young men and their families had my 1682 Quaker immigrants morals, this war would have been stopped early in its tracks. The Vietnam war was and continues to be a blight on this country. Few stood up against it. My Father, Uncles, Grandfathers, cousins, served in WW1, WW11, Korean, Vietnam. Two were just, and they knew what they were fighting for.

I listen to these at night when I'm home and often fall asleep to them playing all night. Lately, with this practice, I can dream really well, and I'm hearing the stories. I am dreaming the details and coming aware so I am waking up to the good ones, this one is one of those and now I'm sitting up. You got me good on the way in, how beautiful it was, then I had these guys chasing me and mine. Great story Mr. Ross. I have to wonder if you know the name of Rocky. He is a big guy-may be dead today I must check. Im in Oregon. I have a pic of him and his buddy who is smaller than "Roc". I'll do more with the pic later and I have a person to contact regarding him. What a trip huh? God Bless War. Great job Tom!
