Two weeks ago, I traded my 19 Subaru Ascent and bought a Limited Forester. We like the Forester very much, it handles better than the Ascent and it's very comfortable. I miss the lane keeping that the Ascent has, this Forester just beeps when you go towards another lane and does not turn the steering like the Ascent. I like the steering response headlights a lot, really helps when turning in dark areas. We had an 09 Forester before the Ascent and this Forester is so much better than the 09.
@@vipul_singh Blame the consumer. No one likes how it sounds or feels, even if it's faster / more efficient / better. But yes, it's incredibly frustrating all around. So much effort to make a transmission designed to do ONE thing, and then we shoehorn it to do the thing it replaced, and not as well. Incredible.
I kind of like the fake shifts. Better than the droning. I would rather have a stepped automatic but if I had a CVT, better if it simulates shifts when you put your foot down. Not so important with a more powerful motor or a hybrid.

I just bought a 2020 Forester w/ 3900 miles (loaner car) and am very happy with it. It's my second Forester. I have a 2014 which I gave to my son for his graduation. Besides brakes, tires, and 1 recall, I had 116k miles with NO problems, so I didn't even consider a different vehicle. I'm happy they fixed the cupholder problem!
Great video. I leased a Forester Sport in dark gray and am picking it up next week. It drives a lot better then people think. It holds the road extremely well. Yeah, it's not a WRX STI, it's not a rocketship, but it really doesn't have to be. It appeals to the casual adult driver. It gets you where you need to go without any trouble. Glad I picked it. Plus the sport version has that really nice gray interior with orange accents.
I'm never gonna understand why they use a CVT when they dont use it like a CVT on acceleration it could be kept at peak power for maximum acceleration and peak efficiency when just cruising but nooo... fake gears to go against all reasons to use a CVT
It made some sense when they first started using it, since anything was better than that archaic 4 and 5 speed auto they were using since the 90's. But at least those transmissions were bullet proof. The CVT is smoother and faster (those transmissions drove me mad how slow they were) than the transmission it replaced in Subaru's line up, however they are worse than everything else these days apart from *maybe* efficiency. So Subaru is in the same place they were in late 2000's with their old auto, if not worse.
these CVT architectures (same story with Nissan) that have been developed in-house are extremely easy to tune to different powertrains and curb weights, in some cases with software only. so they essentially spend zero money per car in R&D vs other manufacturers that might have a new traditional automatic every 1 or 2 generations or if it's a 3rd party transmission like ZF then they're spending a significant amount more per transmission to deliver a driving feel that frankly the majority of subaru drivers dgaf about. also, since subarus are full time awd only CVTs can provide the max amount of mpg so subarus can compete with other fwd cars in mpg. the simulated stepping doesn't really cost that much mpg. also, as a side note, manufacturers use calculations to develop EPA estimates, the EPA can audit these claims, but the MPG is less of a real world testing regimen and more so just a calculation of the powertrain characteristics, software, and vehicle weight. consequently, this makes it even easier for CVTs to claim better on paper MPG than normal automatics.
Love my forester. Drives through any winter weather and gets me up and down a mountain. The only other vehicle that competes with it where i live is JLR Discovery or a Rangie
I purchased a 2020 Forester Limited. So far absolutely love it! I do have two minor complaints. 1. The auto start/stop. Not something you can really avoid these days so ill accept it. 2. A bug with apple car play and USB media. Cannot access USB media when Iphone is connected. Beyond those minor complaint the vehicle is a pleasure to drive. The adaptive cruise control and lane keep is impressive and works well. Appointments are comfortable and ride is surprisingly supple. Have yet to "floor" it, but have merged on many high ways and never been wanting for power/acceleration. All in all a tight package for the price.
I don’t know if this is something that would fit in your car review’s format, but for family centric vehicles (like this Forester) I would mentioned crash ratings
I appreciate when it’s more “normal” cars that my friends and family drive; aka. if I’m going to buy a car I can afford this year. Of course the fancy cars are better. But I enjoy the cars and reviews for the muggles.
I do love the visibility that the Forester has. My sister has one and it's like being in a fishbowl. I drive the Outback which I like more because it's a wagon but the Forester I think is actually easier to see out of which is nice for everyone's safety
Does it have a manual? A turbo? A hood scoop? No? Then it most certainly is not better than I thought. From the company that advertised against being beige, this is very very beige.
I literally just got a 2018 Subaru Outback Touring(tip trim in America) and it has the brown leather. Love it so much! It’s way slower than my old WRX but the comfort makes up for it for sure. It’s my commute killer!
I have a 2019 Forester, and I think your review is confusing. This is not a Porsche Taycan, nor a McLaren. It is a car designed for families. Who cares about acceleration ? I chose the car after extensive research, and I am delighted with it. It is awesome in the winter ; is comfortable and easy to drive. The available room in the car and in the trunk is fantastic, and the fuel consumption is ok, as are the looks. Best resale value on the market ! Darn right it is better than you think !
Y’all underplayed this car. Exceptional value for money ESPECIALLY in snow. I’ve been stuck a total of zero times. Zero. This is in Northern New Brunswick ... you don’t get much snowier. Hyundai?? 🤮

I bought a 2020 Touring (top trim in the US) and I absolutely love this thing. Only two things really drive me nuts, the fact that you can't permanently disable engine auto start/stop and that you can't permanently enable auto brake hold. The former I understand due to emissions certification, the latter I can't explain. Otherwise the vehicle is fantastic. While the exterior looks are dull (as all Subarus), the interior in this generation has really taken a step forward and IMHO at the very least matched if not leaped over most of the competition. The safety tech is class leading now doubt, eyesight is fantastic. Lane centering works wonders on the highway unlike what Yuri experienced. The fact that it will auto stop you both forward and in reverse if it seems obstacles, is next level. The automatic seat/mirror adjustment based on facial recognition is next level, I don't know how we lived without. I share the car with my wife and it makes everything seamless. The heated steering wheel is great and heated rear seats is a nice extra touch. The only performance I care about in this car is the inclement weather performance, which goes without saying is obviously great. As far as power/CVT, it's irrelevant to me as it's just a family hauler for us.
Terry Keith well you see I am still young to drive but I love cars especially suvs.. I would love to get one in the future but have to wait 6 years to drive
@@Sebastian-wg1ru Haha, keep going and keep your dreams in mind. You'll have a Forester if that's what you really want. Check back in at the six year mark, and let us know if it's still what you want. Stay healthy, man.

I have a 2019 but should be about the same and you have to drive it for a while to notice all the design flaws
I love my 2017 Forester XT with its turbo. And though there are features in the 2020 Forester I would like to have (Android Auto, faster operating tailgate, etc) I wouldn't trade my turbo's power for them.
What is sad is that Subaru has the 2.4 turbo regular gas engine from the Ascent, which is optional on the slow selling Legacy and Outback and Subaru doesn't even offer it on the Forester. If they did I could put the Forester back on our list.
adequate power, comfortable, lots of room for a family, secure, easy to work on for the shade tree mechanic. we have the '16 outback with the ONE critical feature that makes the drive tolerable...a 3rd F'in pedal. Its a real shame that at this point, there are no new manual shift family type vehicles in the market place- the type of family that has 2 adult sized teenagers. Thanks for the review boys!
Greetings from Australia guys. Love your reviews. The looks on your faces when you planted the foot at the start of the video are priceless. I had exactly the same reaction when I test drove the Forester and ended up getting our equivalent to your CX5 Signature turbo.
@@e70_x5_guy4 But the new Escape is the first of the new manufacturing line. Hasn't there been some quality issues there? Either way personally I'm a forester/Rav4 supporter
Jacob, your face on acceleration was priceless! 2 things I will never buy a car with: a CVT, and auto-shut off. Ugh. The auto-shut off should default to being off, and you can choose to enable it. Not the other way around.
I know it is because we bought a Sport at the end of last year, and it’s great. It’s my wife’s car, and she’s in love LOL! 30mpg, all wheel drive, tons of space, rugged enough, panoramic moonroof...not too shabby. Oh yeah, and the easiest oil change I’ve ever done :)
I was worried when I saw IG preview as I love my 17 Forester Limited and was worried they'd trash it. As I always say, the CVT would never be my choice in a sports car or performance vehicle, but it suits this suv perfectly. I've never owned a car that was so amazingly efficient at holding speed in cruise over hilly back roads or highways as it doesn't have to mess around with Dow shifting a whole gear, it can do so much more with engine braking on downhills meaning less riding the brakes to maintain speed or suddenly going 15kmh faster than cruise is set just because you're on a hill. With snows on it's been unstoppable in winter and even on stock 18" tires I've trundled it down forest path and fire routes with nothing but a smile at the fun I'd had.
Sadly Subaru will never put the Turbo back in, they just prefer higher mileage and slowness with no options to get their Turbo engine. With a Turbo option, we would have considered the Forester for our highway work commutes and trips through the mountain passes.
@david chappel So true, Subaru only wants mpg's nowadays, so forget about anymore hp. For them the base engine is plenty for enough people, so no need for an optional engine for those of us that require more hp.
Seeing these all over the road now makes me appreciate my SG XT more. It’s nowhere near as luxurious, but it’s a fun, agile, fast scrappy car which I love.
Honestly you guys were a lot nicer about the Forester than I expected. I bought a 2020 Forester Limited last October over a CX-5 Turbo - I know you guys don't talk about MPGs, but that and the head unit made me lean towards the Forester. The CX-5 reverse and 360 cam was awful. And I drive like a grandma anyway so the Forester suits me just fine.
I hate how subaru was very good from the 1990s to 2010 and now its not that good , the interior is good looking but the exterior look of the legacy , forester is very normal/bland :( I have a 2006 legacy and compared it to the 2019 one and they didn't realy improve much
I bought one last December and I love everything about it... Excellent visibility, nice long and wide panoramic sunroof, eyesight works marvelously well (excpt, it makes my heart beat faster when approaching stopped vehicle, like on red light) and I use it a lot. Love the crystal pearl color and best of all, I can start it remotely from cellphone app...no regrets at all☺️👍👍👍
About paddle shifters and the reasoning on a slower car like this...manual mode comes in handy in snow, going downhill. Paddles make that easier and keep both hands on the wheel. It’s not a matter of driving sporty, but a bit safer. As a skier, I drive in the snow a lot and Subies are excellent cars for that mission.

I looked up your video on the 2019 Santa Fe because of this video. Not knocking you or anything, but your video editing and presentation has come a long way since last year. Keep up the good work and great videos!
Hey Yuri, you wanna comb your hair?
Yuri: nah
Simulated gears with a CVT, all the downside of a CVT with none of the benefit!
Incredible.
yeah i wish an automatic !
I kind of like the fake shifts. Better than the droning. I would rather have a stepped automatic but if I had a CVT, better if it simulates shifts when you put your foot down. Not so important with a more powerful motor or a hybrid.

@Dika Vinci yea i dont get it ppl dont wanna make up their minds...
I drive the new 2020 forester premium it’s the best car I’ve ever had the technology helps me with my business ..I am safe with the car airbags etc
I find a lot of their comments are negative ... I wonder what cars they drive
This is a lovely car outside and in
And I am proud to drive one
Well done Subaru
When I started watching this channel I thought: man, this dude is very serious about his rewind satellite radio.
The Forester has greatly improved over the years, specifically the interior. I just wish they didn’t have the CVT.
I would go buy one if it didnt have a CVT.
@Tarun tej A continuously variable transmission (CVT)??
Tarun tej Continuously Vulnerable Transmission. Lol
I'm never gonna understand why they use a CVT when they dont use it like a CVT
on acceleration it could be kept at peak power for maximum acceleration and peak efficiency when just cruising
but nooo... fake gears to go against all reasons to use a CVT
People didnt like how it sounded. They wanted it to fake shift
William Brewer ok cool, so why are they doing it now in 2020 instead of installing a normal auto
these CVT architectures (same story with Nissan) that have been developed in-house are extremely easy to tune to different powertrains and curb weights, in some cases with software only. so they essentially spend zero money per car in R&D vs other manufacturers that might have a new traditional automatic every 1 or 2 generations or if it's a 3rd party transmission like ZF then they're spending a significant amount more per transmission to deliver a driving feel that frankly the majority of subaru drivers dgaf about. also, since subarus are full time awd only CVTs can provide the max amount of mpg so subarus can compete with other fwd cars in mpg. the simulated stepping doesn't really cost that much mpg. also, as a side note, manufacturers use calculations to develop EPA estimates, the EPA can audit these claims, but the MPG is less of a real world testing regimen and more so just a calculation of the powertrain characteristics, software, and vehicle weight. consequently, this makes it even easier for CVTs to claim better on paper MPG than normal automatics.

That intro music was eerily one of the most Subaru-esque themes I’ve heard of. They should have it be the official Forester song.
Then it was playing I thought to myself, this is what I expect to be playing when I hop into a Forester.
Does anyone know who's the author by any chance?
Love my forester. Drives through any winter weather and gets me up and down a mountain. The only other vehicle that competes with it where i live is JLR Discovery or a Rangie
I liked the intro. I always wanted to see your take on the forester. Now I can't wait to see u review the Kia Seltos.
The 2.5 and 6-speed changed the character significantly. RIP manual trans.
Thank you for mentioning and showing the lane assist feature. Not enough reviewers do that, they are not all equal. Great video!

I don’t know if this is something that would fit in your car review’s format, but for family centric vehicles (like this Forester) I would mentioned crash ratings
oK, dad
It is medium-safe to me, not special, not bad. The safest car in that (price)class is the 2019 Honda CR-V.
Forester have scored very high at crash test, very safe car.
It was great meeting you both at the Canadian Int'l Auto Show last Saturday!
Thanks for coming out!
2:35 That would have been a great time to put a watch sponsorship clip in there.
The Forester not anyone's dream car but totally loved both your faces when flooring it.

Yuri killing it with the editing on that Subaru-like intro music.
I appreciate when it’s more “normal” cars that my friends and family drive; aka. if I’m going to buy a car I can afford this year. Of course the fancy cars are better. But I enjoy the cars and reviews for the muggles.
Makes the content so much better that you guys have different opinions on a lot of things.
I do love the visibility that the Forester has. My sister has one and it's like being in a fishbowl. I drive the Outback which I like more because it's a wagon but the Forester I think is actually easier to see out of which is nice for everyone's safety
Idk why you guys are not at 1M! You guys are amazing with the videos !!
Does it have a manual? A turbo? A hood scoop? No? Then it most certainly is not better than I thought. From the company that advertised against being beige, this is very very beige.
The reason they got rid of the turbo was no one was buying them, or not enough people were buying them.
@@norme1850 But everything is turbo nowadays...na engines are actually the minority now.
Please never stop shooting in Milton, I love being able to watch your videos and know exactly where you are! I love just off of Bronte street LOL
I literally just got a 2018 Subaru Outback Touring(tip trim in America) and it has the brown leather. Love it so much! It’s way slower than my old WRX but the comfort makes up for it for sure. It’s my commute killer!
I'm thinking of getting a 2017 XT touring.

Lox Lover I agree! I wished the auto start stop was a bit more refined.
What is auto brake hold?
The forester is a amazing, practical vehicle.. Wish I can get one

You should have told the public what model you were testing so there is no confusion optional equipment. You should have also tested it night to see how hard it is to find the overhead lights. I love my 2017 Forester XT with its turbo. And though there are features in the 2020 Forester I would like to have (Android Auto, faster operating tailgate, etc) I wouldn't trade my turbo's power for them.

You guys are so fun to watch, even though this Forester is the Crap!!!!
Bring back the Turbo!!!
They ruined their line up by taking out the xt w/ the hood scoop
I am looking for a low mileage Forester XT. Hopefully they bring it back after it breaks.

2 things I will never buy a car with: a CVT, and auto-shut off. Ugh. The auto-shut off should default to being off, and you can choose to enable it. Not the other way around.
I've been driving for over 20 years and I never once moved the sun visor to the side, let alone tried to extend it. Am I alone here?
I drive north on the NY Thruway a lot in the late afternoon and that visor definitely goes to the side. The sun glare can be brutal.

Using any oil? Hope not.
Subaru has got to bump up the hp on the Forester, bring back the STi.
For them the base engine is plenty for enough people, so no need for an optional engine for those of us that require more hp.
for you? OK, Boomer
Still have the 2014 Forester XT, enough hp and the elbow rest is adjustable!

Subaru is my favorite auto manufacture out there, but their prices are starting to skyrocket beyond what they look to be worth.

I've drive the new generation Foresters a few times when they give a loner to drive. I can tell you it needs a bigger rear stabilizer bar. I replaced the stock rear stabilizer bar on my 2015 Forester with the 20mm one and it makes a big difference in tightening up the rear for turn-in and out.
