    These videos are a gold mine of information. They allow home owners to resolve simple issues (and better understand their home) without having a technician charge $80-$125 to flip a switch. Saves embarrassment also LOL. Thank you sharing these videos, I really could have used them earlier in my life!

    A month ago , my neighbor's AC unit would not engage. He called the HVAC people to come. They came, investigated (?) and blamed the thermostat as being defective ( almost new Honeywell WIFI version). I gave him my "old" battery thermostat (replaced with an ECOBEE by me, after watching your videos). The replacement didn't work either. I went to the outdoor unit and found no 24V signal, and then to the control board and determined ( per your videos) it was still functional. I pulled the 3A fuse and , voila, it had blown. Put in my spare and the AC fired right up ! What had happened is that they had a painter in and he removed the thermostat without shutting off the power. The fuse saved the board. And, yes, I have been guilty of accidentally flipping the furnace switch off , but now I always check that first !! Thanks for all you do.

    You just saved me my friend!!!!
    Honeywell WIFI thermostat was shut off and I never realized it, no power to it. I watched through your video and went and checked the circuit breaker, and I was on for the furnace. I then went and looked at my furnace switch down where my HVAC unit is, and it was shut off! I just had someone in my house doing a termite inspection, and he must have turned it off in his poking around!
    Thanks for saving us!

    Jay, I finally repaired my HVAC, I'm so happy.
    I followed your videos and it helped entirely.
    I'll share with you my experience as it was an entire adventure:
    First the AC unit was not cooling. When checked outside the fan was not getting any signal to be turned on, so I thought it was just a change needed in the capacitor. I went to home depot on a friday 7pm and I got extremely pissed becaus they don't have anything in physical for hvac, and online takes days to deliver. So we gave up and went somewhere else to sleep for the night because it was so hot.
    Next day in the morning I looked for a hvac parts store and found one, and bought the capacitor. I followed your videos, I installed it, and it "worked". The fan was now not spinning! I took the motor out and it was so jammed and rusted, rushed back to the hvac store to get a new motor, they gave me a "universal" motor with 4 cables (my old unit had 3 cables). Followed your videos, cut the brown and white as you instructed, reconnected everything (sounds easy but took hours to even pull the fan out of the motor it was extremely stuck). Even your technique of using sand paper worked beautifully. now with new capacitor and condenser fan motor it was the moment of truth. I turned on and it wasn't spinning!! I thought I was lost because I thought I had done something wrong and was about to give up and just call a techinician. I checked more of your videos and found how to bypass the termostat by using the contactor. I pressed the contactor and it worked! the fan started spinning and immediately started cooling, BUT the contactor wasn't staying plunged. so now I checked your contactor video, had to run again to the hvac store, got a new contactor, followed the instructions again reconnected the new contactor and BAM everything was working perfectly!! I was surprised how everything worked and how by just looking at your videos we did it!
    I should say that, a technician did really came to our place before, but he was charging us 2-2.5k because he said the compressor was old and not working and is better to get a new one. But that sounded sketchy AF.
    Anyway, I'm extremely happy everything worked and I now feel confident to engage into more repairs myself
    Thanks!!
    PD: I spent 123 dollars in total.

      This was a great comment to read! Thank you for taking the time to share your story and major kudos for not giving up and seeing it through till the end! I'm happy to hear that you got it working and my videos helped in the process. The whole sequential way you approached that was awesome! I am assuming you don't have prior experience doing this so what you were able to accomplish is pretty incredible! My hats off to you my friend, stay cool and may God bless you in all things!

    Adding #11- check the corrosion on the spring connector to the batteries. I noticed mine were corroded so I used a Q-tip with baking soda and water to gently clean the corroded springs, keeping everything dry around it, then re-insert of the batteries. Display came on and everything working perfectly.

    Excellent video
    what’s strange about mine is ½ screen is dim. Inside temp is left hand reads correctly 79f.
    Set system temp I manually and do not use timer to schedule temperature
    I just use it for manual up-and-down leave if it’s midday, I’m gonna set it at like 80 or 82 but generally,
    I keep it between 76 and 78.
    The right hand side it’s like part of the numbers you can read the first digit you read that it has sent it to 77 or 78 where is the eight or seven part of it halfway disappeared

    Great explanation of all 10 issues. I have a NEST thermostat. Many experienced HVAC technicians that post videos, don’t like/hate nest. I love mine to adjust temperatures from my bed before I get up or remotely (outside the home). I think it also saves $$. Occasionally (once every couple weeks) the remote feature on the App DOESN’T adjust the temperature or fan remotely. I go old school and walk to the stadt to manually adjust. Common is connected. I THINK, this happens when an energy saver feature is activated. Minor inconvenience either way. U have any thoughts?

    • @amorales9613
      @amorales9613 10 месяцев назад +3

      I also have a Nest and I love it. It's working great and when my a/c had a problem, it told me and I was able to fix the problem myself. I haven't had any problems with it at all.

    • @jimgargas2480
      @jimgargas2480 10 месяцев назад +2

      I used a Nest for about 5 years until I got my new furnace. It started giving me issues with multiple furnace starts and short- cycling ( I had the C wire). I put my $30 Emerson back on; no more problems. That's why the techs don't like to them. They're power hungry and can cause problems with the control board.

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  10 месяцев назад +4

      @mjohnslo Thank you! The earlier generations of the Nest thermostat had a lot of bugs so they immediately got a bad reputation which they haven't quite been able to fully get rid of yet. They are nice thermostats if they aren't having issues. I don't know off the top of my head what the issue is in your case but if you think it's when an energy feature is activated, try testing that theory. Put it in energy saving mode every Saturday for example and see if this issue starts happening regularly on the same day. Here is a good article for further reading: www.serviceexperts.com/blog/how-to-disable-nest-seasonal-savings

    Regarding Item #9 - what if the reading is i.e. 70V? I have a 30 year old Bryant Evolution Furnace and Heat Pump and one of their digital/analog thermostats. Just last week I tired to replace the Bryant thermostat with a Honeywell 24V thermostat - but it did not work as it won't if the voltages it receives are higher than 28V. Is there a switch on the furnace to limit the voltage to the thermostat? Also BTW, my system only has metal (cleanable) filters (including electrostatic ones), and I wanted your comments on those types of filters as your filter videos just discussed the paper ones.

  • @chrissauter7501
    @chrissauter7501 8 месяцев назад +3

    There is another way to verify if the problem is the thermsotat itself. Unplug the furnace or turn off the power switch first amd foremost. Then remove the thermostat. If summer, take cooling wire (normally yellow) and power wire (notmally red) and twist them together. You need to make sure that they are the correct wires by looking at the wires on the board. If in winter, use power wire sgin but this time you want the heating wire (normally white). Again verify you have the two corrdct wires. Then re-apply power. If ot cycles through correctly, then the problem is the thermostat. I have used this many times in the field and in my own home

    Hay what do you recommend if you have a refrigerant leak in your thermos but you don’t want to replace it

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  10 месяцев назад +2

      With a leak you really only have two options. Repair the leak or replace the unit. You could also try refilling it and hope it's a small leak. Maybe it will last you the rest of the season if you get lucky. (if there's a leak it will continue to leak out even if you are not using the unit in the winter)

    What’s the “Orange colored wire” for. I have the Honeywell Home thermostat and I connected the blue wire to the red power source and it all appears to be working fine. Just curious as to what to do with that orange wire.

      Yes, usually it is the face piece that goes bad so if you are replacing the thermostat with the same model, leaving the old base on is totally fine. 👍

    Hey Jay I have a question could you make a video of why when you turn your air conditioner on it doesn’t blow any cold air it only blows hot air. The reason why I asked you if you could make a video on this topic is because I ran into this problem I would really appreciate it if you could make a video about why hot air blows when the air conditioner is on. You rock brother.

    Let me tell you what is happening in my house now, in case you can use the topic for a video.
    Topic: very bad smell in kitchen. Smells like sewage.
    Concern: sewage backing up? Something broken?
    Action: I looked at both bathrooms, smelled the drains, checked plumbing below sinks for leaks. One toilet is not in use for now (leaky fill valve), so I put water in the bowl to fill the p-trap, even though there's no smell. Smell appeared to be coming from kitchen drain. No leak underneath. I called the town, they came out to check the outside clean out part, told me "their end is clear and my water is running fine through the system. Get a plumber." No money for plumber. Didn't want to do this to my drain, but I felt stuck, so I poured one pot boiling water into drain. I mixed baking soda and vinegar, put that in drain, waited 10 minutes, poured another pot of boiling water into drain.
    Result: smell still in kitchen. Definitely not from sink drain. I was worried that maybe sewer line was broken under my house (I live on a slab, no basement). Can you imagine the jack hammering inside my home, and the massive cost? Feeling a bit desperate.
    Next action: RUclips searching. Suffice it to say that I found a possible answer, so much better than broken line. I was shocked, never heard this before: the drip tray under the refrigerator can be the source of the smell. So I sniffed around again, and this appears to be a strong possibility. I should say that the fridge has not been functioning properly for years, not keeping cold enough, and the freezer part doesn't work. I read about how to clean the drip tray. Fridge drip trays are bolted to the bottom of the fridge, they can't just be pulled out and cleaned. I I can not safely tip the fridge myself. Only had one person to call to help with that, but he just passed away.
    Plan of action: Since I can't get to the tray, and since the fridge hasn't worked right for a long time, it might be time to throw the fridge out. I really really love that fridge. What a shame. I can't go without a fridge because I keep insulin in there, I will have to get another one, even if it's just a mini fridge. New full size fridges are very expensive.
    Bonus: I just had a discussion with my endocrinologist about how can my A1c be out of control if I'm doing everything right? Possible answer: fridge isn't cold enough to keep my insulin safe. All this time my health has been deteriorating, and this could be one of the reasons. My insulin is rendered ineffective by improper storage temperature. How crazy is this. Perhaps now the doctor will ask her other patients if their fridges are working properly, and suggest that they get fridge thermometers to keep watch over the air temp.
    Summation: Don't panic. Calmly find source of smell, using free or inexpensive methods. Amazingly, fridge drip tray can be source of sewage smell, so don't skip that possibility. Cheap fix if you have reliable help to safely tip the fridge to clean drip dray, or if you can afford a plumber to do it for you. After cleaning, leave it off for a few hours before turning back on. It's possible this procedure could damage the fridge. Protect yourself - don't let anyone talk you into massive expense replacing sewer lines without proof that that is the cause. It's probably something simple. Don't let the distress over that over smell cause you to act in haste or desperation.
    This is very long-winded, but it might be worth it. Save people from desperate, unnecessary expenses. Save some diabetic lives.
    Thanks for listening, Jay. Love your channel. Best to you and your family!

      Wow, that was quite the story and the drain pan being the culprit was totally unexpected! You likely have an older fridge because on most refrigerators it's actually pretty easy to get to the drain pan. Pull the fridge out, take the back panel off and you can see it. Sorry to hear about all the trouble you went through to figure that out! Plus the insulin going bad. Thank you for taking the time to share your story! I dont know if I can turn that into a video but your comment may just save someone's day. God bless you and give you wisdom in all that you do!

      @@WordofAdviceTV Thank you, Jay! I will pull the fridge out and take the back off to check if my tray can be pulled out (fridge is 24 yrs old). I will vacuum it while the back is off too. That can't hurt. Thank you for replying, and I hope this information is helpful to you and your viewers. I don't want anyone to be taken advantage of. Have a great day, and a great weekend!

    I get 28 volts between red and blue wire. My thermostat comes on and within 10-15 minutes powers downs and restarts again. On and off. I have replaced the thermostat Honeywell T9580 WiFi for a brand new one and still got the same issue. Fuse is good, wires are connected. Could it be the transformer on its way out.? Spiking or dropping voltage causing the thermostat to come on and off.? Thx

    request your learned opinion: I have multiple thermostats that always seem to have problems with the temp up or down buttons. Is there anything to help or fix this inconsistent depressing of the buttons . The rest of furnace is fine . Again it's just the stubborn up and down temp buttons. batteries are new. depressing button contact-- are not working properly. Rather than buying new replacement thermostats , ( 3 x 60 - 100 dollars ) I would seek a fix. Am I delusional ? Just asking your opinion I have one of the old round simple thermostats that always works *technology*
