My Experience Removing Old Racing Stripe Decals

- I spent several hours removing the old racing stripes off of my 2006 Mustang. They were 13 years old and cracked from the Florida sun. I used a rubber eraser tool and a heat gun. I tried using several versions of Goo Gone for the residue with no success. I even left it on for 24 hours. In the end it was perseverance and patience that got the job done.
If you're interested in the rubber eraser tool I used in the video here is a link where you can find it:

Have a 2019 Ram truck and had 12" wide rally stipes on the hood. (Avery 900). They cooked in the Florida sun for three years before cracking and making check marks. I tried heat gun at first but was afraid of getting the aluminum hood and paint too hot. For the same reason, I chose not to even try the erasers. I found the absolute fastest and best way is to use a spray can of "Aircraft Decal Remover" from O'Reily Auto parts. (Airplanes are made of aluminum too.) The trick is to spray and area about 12" x 12" and then covering the area with plastic for about 5 minutes. The plastic will save you time and money because it keeps the solvent from evaporating and drying out. The stripes come off easy with a plastic scraper. To remove the adhesive residue, I used "3M All Purpose Adhesive Remover" and a roll of paper towels. Again, the trick is to keep the solvent wet so cover it with soaked paper towels and plastic and let the solvent do all the work. Yes these are not cheap but my time saved and undamaged hood was well worth it.
I was actually searching on how to install racing stripes and your video came up. Yeah I think I will stick to a smaller decal install. Thank you very much for sharing this!
@Glen Calvert, I"m told much of it has to do with the quality of the decal you purchase, but if you leave it on longer than 5 years, everything I've read says it's most likely going to be a pain in the butt. Not to mention if you take them off, the paint not covered by the decal will fade some giving a "ghosting" effect. I was originally going to put stripes back on and decided against it.
@@DIYJeff Imagine having a ghosting effect that looks cool on the car, with nice colour to suit.
It might sound crazy but I used Easy Off oven cleaner to remove the leftover glue. Spray it on.. Wait about 90-120 seconds and start scraping using a plastic scraper. Have the garden hose rinsing as you scrap to dilute the oven cleaner. Glue came off like butter with no damage..
Years ago i removed all the stripes from my 1992 Toyota SR5. Used a heat gun and 3M adhesive remover. It was rare to see a large piece peel off. Most were small bits. I worked to removed the strioes over several weekends as my fingers could last more than an hour or two at a setting..overall looked grest but truck was only a few years old. Did the same with a Subaru and it had been on so long there was a fading of the laint around the decal and you could see where it used to be.
Always thought decals look good, but seeing many older cars with cracked decals and thought how difficult it would be to remove. Therefore I won't put them on my car. Your video confirmed my suspicions. Thanks for the video.
Chuck Jeffcoat, it definitely became more involved than I anticipated.
So glad I saw your video have a 2017 that I wanted to add stripes to but now I'll just leave it alone. Thank you so much.
John Bechman, from what I'm told, it also depends on the quality of the decal that is used. But if it stays on for more than 5 years, no matter what the quality of the decal, it would have this problem.
Prep: Blankets and cushions to protect car (long lawn furniture cushions work great). Clothes with NO zippers, buttons etc, NO belt. Step stool.
Step 1 - Heatgun + plastic scraper (a heavy duty bondo spreader works good. its thick with a medium taper to a good edge. wont bend too much when pressed hard) at low angle (nearly flat) and fast-medium speed to get the majority off. Run the heatgun ahead of the scraper and just do big long lines.
Step 2 (IF needed) - Heatgun + plastic scraper at high angle (nearly perpendicular) and medium speed to get large glue areas off. You want it to literally push the glue along in one pass like scraping chemically removing paint. Dont let the glue get under the scraper, keep all the glue in front of the scraper. DONT point heatgun too close to scraper, it will deform.
Step 3 - Heatgun + WD40 + RAG (not paper towel). Spray WD40 and Heat an area about the size of a piece of paper, soak the rag with WD40. Get the area VERY warm, NOT HOT.
Step 4 - COLD scrape stubborn lines or glue buildups, then Step 3 them again after.
Stay gold.
whoa, that was a lot of work. Nice license plate!
Great video feller
Hey Jeff, you can also use a penetrating oil like WD40 to remove the glue residue. That's what I did with my Mustang and it worked great.
Ann Dee, thanks for the tip. I hope I never have to remove one again.
does that damage the paint?
@@DIYJeff honestly it looked kinda fun
I have an '06 GT as well, with factory stripes. Spent 2 hours trying to peel them off by hand with nothing but the sun just to see how it went lol. Definitely going to pick up a plastic scraper at the least. Did that eraser drill attachment leave and scuffs/swirls on the paint?
@ Octane Street, I honestly don't remember. It was a couple years ago, but I don't remember seeing anything that stood out.
@@DIYJeff No worries brother appreciate the response.
Hey guys I have a 2010 hurst SRT8 challenger with the stock hood decal. With just a heat gun it came off like butter. Cleaned it all up with a microfiber and detailing spray. Could use a light polish but doesn’t concern me
Since theres a difference in paint after u take it off is it worth the time to take the stripes off or should i just get the stripes redone and painted instead of sticker next time?
I ended up repainting my whole car because there was such a difference, but if you want to have stripes, I highly suggest having them painted on.
How long to remove the two stripes on top the hood and on top the trunk lid? Thinking about buying a camaro with black stripes that are cracking.
@Terry Walker, I had at least 20 hours into the hood and trunk. It’s a very long process.
About to ask the same question. Dang, 20 hours.
I have 12 year old mini Cooper, the stripes are a bit cracked etc. Is it possible to apply on top of the old ones
No, applying on top of the old ones will just show through.
I know now, if you're going to keep the car for many years, then you have to replace the stripes every 5-years. It's very difficult to remove the old ones after 11-years as I'm currently trying to do.
I could see that paint was well preserved below those black stripes. Now, how do you solve that difference in color shades?
MFP 2241 , I’m not aware of any way to solve the color difference except repainting the whole hood. The base coat under the clear coat is faded and cannot be fixed.
@@DIYJeff
Exactly.
you could lightly wetsand/ buff the edge of where the stripe was to blend the edge and make it not as obvious
Hello Jeff, you removed the interesting ones, I would like to know if it made a difference in the painting, did you manage to solve it? Did you polish or did you need to repaint the pieces?
I ended up having to repaint the whole car.
Important question: how was the paint underneath the decal? Was there any difference between the spots where the decal was and wasn't?
@Roman R, the paint under the decals was the original paint color and the rest of the car was faded.
@@DIYJeff
Probably it doesn't look that good...
Is there any way to fix that?
@@sahil5099 bump
Was the paint faded differently under the decals? Considering doing this to my F150.
Yes, there was a vast difference.
On an older Motorhome and after painting where to get new ones?
Kathy Fann, I found mine on eBay, but I'm not sure about a motorhome.
I'd avoid vinyl stripes for any car as a "lesson learned". I have a 2015 charger that had the stripes, looked good for a while, then started cracking in the AZ heat. What I didn't know was water (? in AZ?) had gotten under the roof stripe over time and when the stripe started flaking off I noticed rust. CRAP! To make it short, I have a HUGE rust spot, no paint to be found, on the roof of the otherwise pristine car. I'm looking at a 1K paint repair job.
@John Smith, thanks for sharing your experience. That's aweful! I ended up not replacing the stripes on my car and painted the car myself. Originally I was going to put them back on, but decided against it.
Mines came with my car 🚗 I had for almost four years now it’s almost off from the heat it’s gotten smaller I’m wondering should I replace it are just leave it alone 🤦🏽♀️
i have a 2016 rt with stripes , is it to late to remove the stripes because of the ageing ?
@RidinDirty 345, no you're they're probably not as baked on as mine were. You should be able to get them off much easier.
Okay, so it works, but wow what a lot of work to do the job. Do you know how many total hours you spent?
David Martindale, about 15 hours.
@@DIYJeff OMG!
What are the specs on your drill, I’m trying to remove my stripes off my camaro
@Aaron Rice, it’s just a standard Rigid 18V drill.
Jeff--the wheel says you can't use the rubber wheel on plastic...so what did you use on the bumpers? Did you use more than one of the rubber wheels to get the job done?
@Joel Knueven, I only used one wheel but it did whittle it down to almost nothing left. Unfortunately, mine didn't come with instructions about not using it on plastic and I learned the hard way. It burns through the clear coat and paint quickly right down to the primer. What I ended up doing was still using it, but putting it on my cordless drill at low speed and really watching it to make sure it didn't burn through. But it's risky for sure. I had run out of options on getting the adhesive off the plastic. Goo gone wouldn't even touch this stuff.
@@DIYJeff Thanks for the tips brother, I'm dreading the work ahead of me. Did any spray work at all to help remove the adhesive residue? I see some "specialized" sprays on Amazon I was hopeful would do the trick.
@@joelknueven1014 , I tried standard goo gone, and also a product they make in a spray gel form that's supposed to stay on the surface longer before evaporating. Also tried a citrus spray advertised on Amazon as being great stuff that is supposed to remove all adhesives. NONE of them did even 1% to help. In the end it was just hours and hours of mind numbing work.
I bought my car with simular looking stripes, they look ugly as hell.
This video tells me i'm in for a long day, but thanks for the tips!
Z-Trip, yep....good luck!
Did you get any ghosting in the paint after the stripes were taken off? Gonna try to take off my stripes and do some paint correction
dillbill2A, there was a big difference in the paint underneath the stripes. It was still the original color while the rest of the car had faded substantially.
Hey! Have the same problem on my stang 😂 The Hooad and trunk lid we're okay... took a while but came out good. How did you remove your roof stripes? I've tried everything! Using heat gun and the rubber eraser but the top stripes are sooo baked that they don't even peel off ! Where did you start on the roof? From the side of the stripes or from front to back (back to front) ? I've tried front to back and they just don't even peel off.
Toxin Games, I used the eraser and heat gun on my roof, just like the other parts of the car. Mine were baked on pretty good too. I started front to back. The whole roof took me about 6 hours.
Do you still have ghost stripes after you got all the glue off or aka stripe shadows?
Michael Pence from the parts i've taken off. Yes they were very noticeable but then after one pass of polish/compound it started to go away. So i guess a few passes would make it disappear majority. I can still see it but barely, only if i look a few inches away from it
I need help. I have a challenger and the stripes are cracked. Would you say heat them up then use the eraser wheel and then wash and polish to make sure it’s all gone. I need answers/suggestions....
Karl Wright I had the same situation with my roof. I tried everything, heat and wheel for hours and nothing. What worked for me was a scraper blade (the ones with the handles and are about 4in wide). I flip it to the dull side and put tape over it so it doesn't scratch the paint. I head up the vinyl then scrape. Takes off a lot at once and no scratches. Use painters tape and every so often replace it because it'll start ripping and you wouldn't want it to rip all the way through to the point it scratches.
Hi jeff great job you did there i took the racing stripes off my 2007 corsa vxr it took less than an hour i used red hot water took a few kettles but i got there in the end and they came off easily only problem i have is i am left with 2 stripe marks over the car where the paint is newer any suggestions to get rid of them thanks chris and keep up the good work
I would have thought that hot of water would have melted the clear coat. Interesting. As far as the ghosting stripes from the newer paint underneath, I'm not aware of an easy solution. I ended up sanding down my entire car and repainting it.
@@DIYJeff no the paintwork was fine just left with them marks where the stripes were and the kettle water worked very well aslong as you keep it at a safe distance from the car i think a good machine polish might sort it but time will tell lol ill let you know the outcome once it is done
@@chriswood5939, yes, please let me know how it turns out!
@@DIYJeff i will do soon as i get round to doing it as weather isnt the best at the moment lol
@@chriswood5939 how did it work out for you?! I'm looking to remove mine and am very afraid of having paint stripes underneath
I'm so glad mine is just a small one on the back and on the hood....
CW_For_The_Win, you’re lucky then. Should only take few hours.
can use warm water then a heat gun and rubber wheel on drill then to get the glue off use turps wipe on and wipe off or if you get prepsol form paint store both dose not hurt the paint get glue off easily im a car painter by trade ive got a 1995 mustang to get wide stirpes off bonnet and boot this weekend lol
The hot water and wd40 tips in the comments r great. Awesome video. I wanna remove my stripes off my ‘11 camaro and replace. Fingers crossed that it won’t b such a chore
tony sanchez Tony have you removed the stripes yet?
Karl Wright not yet.
How about now? Im in the middle of taking my camaro stripes are giving me a headschd
You said after I did the trunk I did the hood but while you did the hood the trunk still has the stripes.
Lol!! Good job anyway.
Aaron B, thanks for catching that. I think I was delirious from how long the whole project took.
Thanks for being honest.
RC TROOPER, absolutely!!! You are the first person to ever make that comment, and honesty is my #1 priority when making my videos and when I reply to comments.
GREAT JOB Jeff!! We have to do that to our van, SUCKS!!!!
Astral Auto Repairs, I'll never buy another car that has decal racing stripes that need to be removed. It took me about 8 hours. and made a big mess. But not only that, the paint under the decals was the original color while the rest of the car had faded, leaving a ghost stripe.
Has anyone tried re-striping directly on top of the old cracked stripes, without removing the old stripes?
Is it possible to get a good result? Would it look better or worse than not doing anything?
@Pete Roberts, decals (like stripes) need a completely smooth surface. If you restripe over the old one's they won't lay completely flat and you'll get ripples.
Don't do it. I design cut and install graphics for a living and I met a guy that someone did stripes over stripes. Absolutely awful. Looked like crap, premature peeling. You could see the old busted ones through the stripe. Just a headache.
Please don't do that feller, you will ruin it
I'll need to do this soon... I neglected my stripes and they are starting to crack on top.
@Ryan G, it’s a daunting, not fun task.
I'm doing it now... it's a terrible thing. All I can remove is little chunks. I've learned now, that every 5-years they have to be replaced, if you intend on keeping the car. It's really not fun.
You have any noticeable color change ?
Yes, it was really noticeable.
@@DIYJeff I figured I wanna do this on mine. How'd did you fix it or did you just deal with it ? Lol
@@triggas80, couldn't deal with it so I ended up repainting the whole car. One solution would be to put new stripes back on, and I tried doing that myself, but I couldn't get them to not bubble. I checked into having them put on professionally and it was going to cost $600.
I would clay bar it and polish it if you have some swirls so the paint looks uniform!
CW_For_The_Win, the problem I had is all the paint except what was under the stripes had faded. No amount of polishing is going to help that. I ended up repainting the car.
@@DIYJeff oh shokt that sucks I'm sorry!
Currently doing this on my 11 camero it’s painful did the trunk an after did clay bar compound polish an wax all by hand turned out amazing but this hood is awful probably gonna take a couple days to get it like the trunk
No one should ever put decal racing stripes on unless they hate the person who buys it from them.
Anyone that puts those on their car deserves to be the person talk by them off...im painting a 2000 mustang with silver decals..two days on just the hood ones
Got some decal done few years ago idk why the guy did it put a clean coat are did not remove the protected film clear coat peeled off now i have wite gumed yellowed strips
Pepe Le Pew, sorry to hear that.
Wow that Eraser seems to work well. I've got an old Bernie Sanders sticker on the back of my Prius that I need to remove; maybe I'll give this a try if the hemp oil doesn't work.
danr97123, it would easily take off any bumper stickers! I used the eraser tool a bit beyond its intended purpose. If you’re removing a sticker or decal off of fiberglass and not metal, be sure to keep your drill on a lower setting. The high setting will burn through the paint. But the high setting over metal is no problem.
@@DIYJeff Would you recommend not using it on glass? Most of my bumper stickers are on my window.
Lee Wood, it would work even better on glass. You can use the drills high setting for sure. It would take off a sticker leaving no residue in a matter of seconds.
I wish we could use the eraser to just get rid of Bernie Sanders...
Yeah add a trump sticker
I'm removing stripes on my car now. Same headache! I'm using heat gun and goo-gone... taking forever! Also using isopropyl alcohol which is a quicker removal. I'm going to go back over the car with a buffing compound and work on the faded paint. I believe the goo-gone is safer, but I'm bored and frustrated with this process. I think I will go pick up that stripe eraser to finish the job.
Glenn Brooks, The only thing to be careful about on the eraser is using it on fiberglass or plastic. If you use the low setting on your drill it's fine, but the high setting heats up the substrate to quickly and burns right through to it. On metal you can use the high setting all day and not be an issue.
Using isopropyl alcohol is a great way to fuck up your clear coat.
@@3nigma.3nc IPA doesn’t mess up clear coat at all. IPA is commonly used by professionals to remove polishes, sealants and waxes. There’s even products like CarPro Eraser that are predominately IPA.
Had the stripes on my 14 mustang removed "professionally." Pretty sure he used an eraser wheel because not long after moving to warmer climate i began to see the glue residue turn white. Now it looks spotty and horrible. Might as well get a new stripe on top of it till I decide to trade it in.
@Scott Castel, I would never put stripes on a car I want to keep ever again. But to trade it in I can see the value.
Do you know if he compound or polished it after?
@@misterservicepro9407 Yes. He told me he buffed and polished it after. I visually inspected the work with him and it was smooth to the touch. It almost took a year to see it turn white in the Texas heat. I moved from WA to TX. 🇺🇲
What about goo gone?
@Wendy Grizer, I tried regular goo gone as well as the gel type that you can let sit for hours. Neither did anything.
Don’t I know it. Bought a heat gun for crackedstripes on rear of my mini. Oh boy ! Taking me forever. So I thought RUclips it there must be an easier way. No apparently 😟
Essie, unfortunately there isn’t. It’s a tedious process.
I had the same issue on my Mini till i found GraphXoff, So much easier for the baked on decals.
@@michaelgluth3822 what is it ? Some sort of chemical ? It won't affect clear coat ?
