I remember watching this live with my brother when I was a kid. When Sheene overtook and flicked the v's at Roberts we were jumping up and down on the sofa. Awesome race.
Biggest rock star moment in the history of motorcycle racing was when Sheene threw his hand behind his back holding up two fingers, it'll never be topped.
Just passed the anniversary of Barry’s passing. What a legend of Bike racing he inspired a generation, a total one off great guy RIP Barry Sheene taken way to early.
The smell was castor bean oil...it was judged a better lubricant when mixed with gas then petroleum oil at the time...and yes it smelled awesome (a former two class AMA Expert license holder and a guy who raced at Daytona in '75).
lol...at 1:15 you can see Kenny decide to pull up and just leisurely go through the corner giving up 1st place to slide back to 3rd to rest his tire/engine...when he made the big pass on the 1st lap he knew he could get to the front anytime he wanted...King Kenny.
You could see Sheene going into those turns before Roberts even though he was trailing, that's where he gained ground on roberts on the final turns,amazing..
we were on the pitwall, blagged a pass from a 125 rider after his race and winged it in the pits..got chucked out the Honda tent taking photos of the NR 500 (?)..kin brilliant and what a race !
I'm not going to sit outside looking like a fool anymore, and why do I have to change my phone service in order for us to talk. You brought these people into my life
Grew up watching these legends battle it out they were my heros. I still ride today and these guys are the reason why. Bet they found it hard walking with balls that big.
You lucky dog, I had to see all this stuff in magazines in America when I was a teenager, to me Kenny Roberts was like the kid next door racing a motorcycle, but Barry Sheene was like James Bond racing a motorcycle, he was the coolest guy ever to race bikes in my book.
I'm a massive fan of Rossi and the much loved late #58 Supa Sic Marco Simomcelli these guys racing here had no traction control anti wheelie just sheer skill and immense bravery and the will to win times that will never be repeated, lol don't think Barry was actually waving at Kenny 🔥💯🔥🏁
@lamanga2004 Lol, that would make sense considering where he's from. What with Amsterdam and everything. But there is actually money to be made in traditional grass, or specifically, grass seed. It's an especially big thing here where I live in the Willamette Valley, which is apparently the grass seed growing capital of the North American continent! No wonder my allergies are so bad.
Love the fact that in almost every race of every sport in 70s and 80s there was Murray Walker as a commentator
R.I.P. Murray
Murray was the voice/face of British Motorsport...absolute Icon
I remember watching this live with my brother when I was a kid. When Sheene overtook and flicked the v's at Roberts we were jumping up and down on the sofa. Awesome race.
Cadwell was brilliant for watching sheene..oliver mount you saw em pass about 2wice
Barry was a legend but Kenny was a phenomenal cyclist. Possibly didn’t take as many risks. But technically brilliant
I was there, unbelievable weekend and great race. The crowd just over-ran the fences at the end.
Biggest rock star moment in the history of motorcycle racing was when Sheene threw his hand behind his back holding up two fingers, it'll never be topped.
These 2 riders improved each other, pushing the limits to win, both legends
thats what its all about same with race cars competition improves the sport
Just passed the anniversary of Barry’s passing. What a legend of Bike racing he inspired a generation, a total one off great guy RIP Barry Sheene taken way to early.
Those bikes sound wicked. Wish 2 strokes were still around. Lovely smell, too.
Get yourself a RZ500 or a RZ350 very good bikes.i loved my 350.so fun but a little light.
The smell was castor bean oil...it was judged a better lubricant when mixed with gas then petroleum oil at the time...and yes it smelled awesome (a former two class AMA Expert license holder and a guy who raced at Daytona in '75).
Greta Thunberg would not agree with you. Kinda wish her 15 minutes of fame would end, very annoying...

Exactly 👍🏻
There will never be the good ol times like these. Just classic.
You could see Sheene going into those turns before Roberts even though he was trailing, that's where he gained ground on roberts on the final turns,amazing..
...Proper Racing ... King kenny and Bazza = Legends !
#7 Sheene .. Olivers Mount, we have a memorial to Barry, a true legend
I can remember watching this as a kid, great race, how much ground did sheene make up on that last lap, you don't see that much now
we were on the pitwall, blagged a pass from a 125 rider after his race and winged it in the pits..got chucked out the Honda tent taking photos of the NR 500 (?)..kin brilliant and what a race !
Two things I wish were still around today:
1. Two stroke bikes
2. Murray Walker commentaries
I'm not going to sit outside looking like a fool anymore, and why do I have to change my phone service in order for us to talk. You brought these people into my life
I was there too I remember being in Kenny's pit during practice too
Angel Nietos 125 cc bike and pit was immaculate tho...
Grew up watching these legends battle it out they were my heros. I still ride today and these guys are the reason why. Bet they found it hard walking with balls that big.
I was there. Saw the two digit salute on TV later. Loved my time there.
I was there in the exact spot where he flicked the V’s; I was only 11 but remember it like yesterday. The track invasion afterwards was insane!
Remember this race on TV as a young lad absolutely the best
Boy do I miss Sir Murray Walker and Sir Sid Wadell. RIP to the Master Mcs.
Murray Walker is still alive.
@@peteb954 Well fark me. I miss his commentary?
Murray Walker is not a grass farmer yet
@@peteb954 lol no
Breathtaking absolute Legends!
Used to go to the races to watch Sheene when i was a kid !!!
You lucky dog, I had to see all this stuff in magazines in America when I was a teenager, to me Kenny Roberts was like the kid next door racing a motorcycle, but Barry Sheene was like James Bond racing a motorcycle, he was the coolest guy ever to race bikes in my book.
I just love 3:38 when Sheene passes Roberts & "waves" at him - or more accurately flips him the finger! XD
Wasn't the finger, it was the V's up. Means "fuck off" in the UK lol
@@davedempster7658 Kind of like our one finger salute?
I'm a massive fan of Rossi and the much loved late #58 Supa Sic Marco Simomcelli these guys racing here had no traction control anti wheelie just sheer skill and immense bravery and the will to win times that will never be repeated, lol don't think Barry was actually waving at Kenny 🔥💯🔥🏁
I could have sworn it was a one finger salute. They did have much mutual respect for each other.
alejandro las buenas épocas. un gran abrazo!
Me encantó, sobre todo al final
Remember this well,I was there sadly my mate later died on his bike ,and the wife is now divorced ,I’m 60 now lol.
That is sad about your friend it was a great race I was in the grandstand on the start line, I still have my ticket it was £8.50
I was there ! went with my mate on my RD250 happy days.
Me and four more of my mates were there, brilliant bazza
2 géants !
the inspiration for the 1980 movie silver dream racer? (david essex = barry sheene and beau bridges = kenny roberts) - yes?
I was 5 years old when this took place
At 130 mph, 3 100th of a second is the length of your middle finger!
Taunting Kenny is like telling Tyson he's got a big nose...it's coming back at ya.
Are these guys racing in the same series that's now called Moto gp?
yep, the world championship
I saw Kenny race at Laguna Seca 1984
Was 2... Kenny on that ow 69 vs freddie
Love the 2 strokes -
Brilliant race!
The best of motorcycle racing - 2 stroker
The Godfathers of Moto GP.
If Sheene hadnt of pulled that wheelie at the start he would have won !!
Maybe Roberts had access to slightly superior machinery than Sheene did?
Roberts bike (YZR 500) had more great handling than Sheene bike (RG 500)
He was a better rider as soon as Roberts came over Sheene days were over.
And once you leave our day of communication is done
The race winner has to use tactics as well as be fast.
Barry you legend.
Happy 70th barry rip
It is Murrays voice correct?
what a race!
If theyre going fast, Murray Walker was on the call
.Mad race...
RIP Barry Sheene
Comment 2 PILOTES SE TIRE LA BOURE, CAR LES MACHINE SONT PRESQUE IDANTITARE, SEUL LE PILOTAGE FERA LE KING, 😍😇
they had to wear larger helmets back then to fit their big 70's hair
Barry won slot of races until Robert’s showed up.
i was there magic
Thou shalt not pass the King, flip him off and expect to win thereafter.
Murray Walker must like Dutch grass! Hartog the Dutch grass farmer...who would know it's all legal now.
Kenni robet 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Roberts > Sheene
Hartog!👍👍👍👍
Dutch grass farmer...LOL. It's legal now.
Barry ain’t waving
MotoGP will reintroduce 2 stroke. Not like 500 cc 2s vs 1000 cc 4s shitty stuffs.
I “wave” too sometimes ))) 🖕
Kenny was just playing with Sheene, there was going to be only one winner the King.
