  • What's with all the Spatulas? They're all spatulas... but they are all for different specific uses. It can be so confusing which spatula to grab when someone in the kitchen says "Hand me a spatula".

    Nail on the head with this vlog! Wish i could help with names but we call them all spatulas followed with about a half-dozen adjectives describing quality and function. I'm going to keep watch on the comments for names. Thank you so much!

    All our wooden spoons & spatulas are called Küche Löffel(round, flat, slotted, fork). Then there's the Rubber Spatula, Icing Knife(offset & flat), Metal Spatula, & Plastic Spatula. The plastic spatula is sometimes called "The Flipper". I never thought about the various tools with the same name. But apparently our descriptors work. You know, like bread knife, steak knife, butter knife, cheese knife, paring knife, etc.

    My chilhood British English was more precise - spatula is rubber/silicone baking bowl scraper, metal "turner" for frying pan is called a fish slice, and long flat metal balde is a palette knife. :)

    The wooden spatula is also great for making tomato sauces because it can scrape the bottom of the pot

    Huh. I grew up with the wooden fond scraper one being called a spatle. With a spurtle being a ... magic wand shaped tool for stirring oatmeal and a spatula having a more defined neck (?). A spatula to me has a handle, defined shoulder, then the paddle part. The words have a nice symmetry when placed in order of width. Spurtle, spatle, spatula. And the slotted one with almost no shoulders was definitely a fish slice, because it was really good at getting between cooked fish and the fish skin. Turners or flippers were the ones with the flat metal surface.

    i have a long, straight cake spatula or palette knife as some people call them that is supposed to be used for spreading frosting on a cake, but i have never used it for that purpose. i use it for flipping crepes and tortillas.

    I was taught the only one of those that is actually a spatula is the leveler. I think at this point they’re all spatulas though, so I propose: rubber scraper, silicon scraper, wooden scraper, scraper spoon, long slotted turner aka fish turner, slotted turner, turner, offset spreader, spreader. Hopefully they’re self-evident on which is which.

    I'm commenting BEFORE watching the video. Let's see if I'm correct. I'm not a chef, my only cooking skills are from Mom and high-school home-economics class.
    A spatula is a long, thin blade-looking, metal utensil that isn't sharpened. It's not an egg-flip or a cake-decorator, as most people confuse them with.
    EDIT after watching:
    The first silicone ones are what I've told are cake-decorators, they can be made of plastic too, except the last one you held up, which is more like a silicone version of a wooden spoon. Some of the second ones I'd call 'egg-flips' some others maybe not, I consider an egg-flip to be the traditional shape that one would use to flip fried eggs. The last ones with the metal blades and wooden handles are what i was taught to be proper spatulas. I may be wrong, but that is what I was taught.

    I say that "spatulas" are for flipping and the silicone thing that gets all the last bits out of a bowl or a pan is a "kitchen squeegee". My wife ridicules me for this, but when I ask her, "Where the hell is the kitchen squeegee?" she does not hand me the fish spatula.

    Hi Glen. I was specifically search for a video on spatulas & yours was the first I have watched. I have recently been experimenting with a French omelette technique (that I find I truly love), and have been thinking the offset spatula might be perfect (for me) for that technique. That said, I always cook my eggs in a non-stick pan, and I was under the impression one should never use metal cooking tools in them, because it with scratch away the surface. You never got back to that point, I am genuinely curious: why do you advocate it?

    • @GlenAndFriendsCooking
      @GlenAndFriendsCooking  4 года назад

      I don't necessarily advocate using a metal spatula in a non stick pan - but with so many non stick coating options on the market today; none of them are as delicate as the Teflon® coatings of yesterday. Most of the new coatings with proper technique and use (which you should follow regardless) are just fine with metal spatulas.

      Most non-stick pans, even the cheaper ones, can handle a metal spatula being used to lift and/or flip something in the pan because you shouldn't be digging into the pan. I wouldn't use one for breaking up ground meat into smaller chunks or scraping fond from the bottom of the pan.

    Glen, I am really curious about using the metal fish spatula on the non-stick pan. Do you use some special non-stick pans? I use mine only on cast iron pans and carbon steel pans.

    I would call the silicone one as spatula, then wood spat & fish spat, and lastly icing/palate knife. In my kitchen, when we say spatula, it automatically means silicone spatula.

      I agree! Great to have a common understanding; just need to take it to the world. But in my mind the metal fish spatula is the "real" spatula. Gonna re-educate myelf!😁

  • @akavienne
    @akavienne 3 года назад

    I actually call them all spatulas. Since I generally cook alone, it's not a big deal. But I suppose if I was talking to someone else, I'd specify rubber spatula, (metal or plastic modifier in front) pancake turner and icing spatula.

      If you do any baking, you really want a silicone spatula. They are great for scraping out batter or I even use them when packing up my leftovers that have a gravy or thick sauce. And then you also want a spatula that you can turn things in a skillet with. That can be plastic or metal, I actually don't recommend the silicone one. That's just my personal taste. You want it to be thin enough to get under an egg or pancake with no problem, but sturdy enough to flip a hamburger. I rarely use my icing spatulas because I generally just ice a cake in the pan. It's casual and I just use the back of the spoon or the rubber spatula to even the icing out on the top.

    For me it's spatula until it's clearly a spoon or knife. So it can hold a substance (spoon) or cut something because it has an edge (knife).

    Ah, in the past I've been infuriated about the inaccuracy of the English language when it comes to spatulas. I have asked MANY native speakers to help me find good names for these things, and they could not.
    You see we have different names for those in my language. The silicone one is mostly used for baking, scraping clean the bowl, it's called a Slikkepot. Which could be translated to "Slikke = lick" and "pot = pot" Because it "licks the pot clean"??? I guess...
    So that is not the same name as for those you use in the frying pan to flip eggs. That one we would call a Stekespade, which translates to "Steke = frying" and "spade = spade/shovel", so it's a "spade for frying". That is a very accurate name I would say.
    Now the wooden one you have there is very similar to a spoon we use mostly to stir in a big pot of porridge. This one we call "sleiv/slev", I cannot translate this one, I suppose it's an old word and we don't know where it came from.
    In English you could try distinguishing them by material I suppose? A wooden spatula, a silicone spatula, a plastic spatula and a metal spatula. Also depending on context people can guess which spatula you need, I wouldn't hand you an egg flipper if you're baking ofc ;)
    You could for instance say "hand me the metal egg flipper" or "the metal frying spatula". Yes, it becomes longer, but it is more accurate, and I think everyone would understand which one you meant. Or you start saying "slikkepot and sleiv". Haha, no problem. Just learn some good old Norwegian and there will be no more confusion in the kitchen.
