    As an obese child being a lineman was one of the only things I ever excelled at athletically. It helped grow my confidence and athleticism. Not saying football was all positive, but it definitely helped shape me into a more healthy confident young man

      I was thinking its not that otherwise thin people were becoming unhealthy to become linemen, its that larger people got an opportunity to be athletic.

      But the rule changes pushed lineman to be even more top-heavy.

    Offensive lineman are some of the most athletic and intelligent athletes on the field today. Most of them are above 300lbs (136kg) and are very quick with their feet. They read the defense before the snap and make the proper adjustments to block or pull. Most normal humans couldn't keep up with a linemen at full sprint

      MASTER VADER It's embarrassing because a 350 lb linemen is probably faster than me and I'm literally a bit over half that size.

      @DuckYou69 7 лет назад +206

      The NFL has a intelligence test called The Wonderlic. It test the players entering the NFL and linemen are the players who score the highest. They need to be intelligent to read the front seven defensive players. They have to adjust their blocking techniques and communicate with the rest of the linemen without the defensive linemen figuring out what play their running.

    I'm not american, but I do believe that american football is a pretty interesting game, it actually has a lot of strategy behind it and planning.
    I think football gets a bad rep around the world, but... it's starting to be weird when your players look like Gears Of Wars characters rather than human beings.

      A Very Kind Guy I mean, that's the same mindset as most Europeans. In England the popular sports are Soccer, Rugby, Cricket, some Basketball and Baseball (though to a much lesser extent). I know Darts and Snooker are also pretty popular.
      American football doesn't even have major a televised league in England as far as I can tell. You can't complain about Europe making fun of Football and then turn around and justify making fun of Soccer in America since it isn't popular. That's very hypocritical.
      And I'm American by the way. Played football for 4 years, hoping an adult league shows up in my soccer-dominated region soon.

    One of the things I find entertaining about the NFL is that each position is so specialized, you end up with a large variety of athletic body types. You have guys who are essentially sumo wrestlers, guys who are like Olympic sprinters, and guys who are like crossfit pros who have to blend power, speed, and agility. NFL isn't really an aerobic endurance sport, but these guys are explosive athletes who either will run past you, jump over you, or flatten you. Hell, it might be the same guy doing all three. There's really no other sport that has that kind of extreme body types.

      Jean-Luc Maske-Stockdale Actually most NFL players are not millionaires. Each roster has 56 players. The NFL has one of the most strict salary cap in pro sports so there's only so much of the pie to go around. The Superstars get the lion's share. The average NFL salary is around $2 million but that number is skewed by the handful of players that make $10 million+ on a team.
      So after all that between taxes and agent fees a player may see 50% of his salary.
      Don't get me wrong this isn't soppose ti make you feel sorry for NFL players. Most still take home very high 6 figure pay after all deductions. I just wanted to correct the record. Most NFL players are not millionaires.

    Back in the day, no one would hire a 300lb player. They were thought to be out of shape. But when one guy got in (the Fridge?) and he proved to be athletic, more and more teams starting hiring their own 300lb lineman. That is the reason you have more of them.

    • @Joshuac6124
      @Joshuac6124 7 лет назад +10

      These guys can bench 220 lbs for over 30 reps thats straight muscle, thats why they make the money they get for how good they are at muscling people at over 300 lbs, and yes they can be athletic too, the reason theres more of them now is because being large is essentially the meta of linemen. Don't ever act like these guys just get fat to play football

    Linemen have been losing a lot more weight in retirement lately though since guys like Marshal Yanda and Joe Thomas have lost a lot of weight almost immediately(Yanda has lost 60 pounds already despite only retiring this spring) because it’s so much more difficult than people think to get up to 300 pounds(rn I’m a high school sophomore and I’m still only 217) and since it requires getting a ton of calories, it’s actually getting pretty easy to lose weight too by just having a normal diet

    Something the video didn't mention was moving the hashmarks toward the middle of the field. This has caused the wide side of the field to be less wide, and made the game more of a north-south power game. When players had to cover a wider wide side, they couldn't be as bulky.

    People are just bigger in general. We have an obesity problem in this country, but I don't think that the NFL is the cause. I think it's more of the obesity epidemic that is the cause of the NFL. Whether these guys played football or not, they would still likely be very big and have the same health risks. The NFL is not coming up to anyone that is over 6ft 5in and asking them to bulk up to 350lbs. They just see that people are already this size and they want these people to be a part of their team.

    When the Spinks brothers dominated the 76 Olympics and then moved up to Heavyweight it was clear that lifting weights paid off. This was the same time that Arnold Schwartzenegger and other bodybuilders became household names, and the same time that Professional Wrestlers began getting massive - all from lifting weights and eating high protein diets. At the same time, Professional Sports began paying more. For example - it wasn't until Magic Johnson that an athlete was paid over $1 million dollars for a season. This made a lot of big guys that would normally go work in factories consider a career in professional sports. There is no need to look at rules changes or anything else to explain the increase in size in professional athletes.

  • @johnyapple8447
    @johnyapple8447 5 лет назад +2

    The “blocking below the waist” rule did change the game a lot. However, I would argue that the “eligible receiver” rule is causing even more “specializing” in certain positions. Consequently, the game is becoming less creative because too many rules are causing the sport to change dramatically from what it once was. In all, referees are bing forced by football leagues, which often are forced by the law, to enforce rules that are being made up each year. Therefore, the game is constantly evolving into a different sport from what it once was. It will remain this way forever unless the laws encompassing the game quit changing each year.

    Offensive Line is the only position in all of official sports where your sole purpose and training is to protect another person.
    Linemen are both the most athletic and smartest people in the offense. They're not running routes, carrying balls, or throwing them. But they are going against defenders who are just as big as (or even bigger than) them while, before that, reading defensive alignments and behaviors.
    They're not just overpaid sumo wrestlers.

    As someone who's played on the O-line since I was 8 I can tell you personally the size of the other team is much more of a driving factor than low blocks, which still happen occasionally. The real reason you see less of them is much simpler, they are infinitely less effective at keeping the defenders off the ball. The evolution of the game has seen better results from larger linemen because they are more difficult to move, not because of rule changes.

    I don't think it' matters how athletic you are, if you're that heavy, it's unhealthy

    • @Calyx
      @Calyx 7 лет назад +17

      Weight is relative, though.
      You know what's also super unhealthy? Pro bodybuilders that drop down to 2% body fat the day before a major competition. Or people with no muscles that can't even lift a 20kg box because they sit on their ass all day.
      Not defending these guys, but weight itself isn't the cause of problems, it's fat, or the complete lack of fat

    • @amadaotero2886

      Muscle also weighs more than fat, so these men most likely weigh so much because of the immense amount of muscle they have from the training

      @Codiliabra 7 лет назад +140

      Nicke. All sports are dumb if you think about it. But, sportfans will argue it takes precise movement, planning, and rehearsal for a game to go smoothly and make a team win. This is applied to all sports. People throwing a ball, hitting a ball with a stick, kicking a ball, hitting a disc with a stick and grabbing a ball with a stick. Most sports involve getting whatever object you kick/hit into the other teams goal. If you break a sport down, each one can be called stupid and useless.

    Blocking below the waist is still allowed in certain situations. You don’t see it as much, but it definitely happens around the line of scrimmage, especially as blockers try to get to the linebackers.

    You act like us lineman eat pizza everyday and we plan on getting big on purpose. Most of us have to be on specialized diets to maintain weight. And being 350+ isn't mandatory, most of those guys are just naturally that big overtime. Us lineman aren't pigs, so make a video elaborating your claim. Thank you.
