What was the other case of booster seat inspired violence that Dr. Grande mentioned? The parents fighting at all those Chuck E Cheese's back around 10 years ago?

I remember the Amy Bishop case, because I'm from Braintree and have been a teacher and professor for many years. School teachers as well as professors often have tenure. They are hired provisionally for a year or two, then become full members of the faculty and after a specified time acquire tenure. The reason for tenure in the public schools is similar to the reason for union membership, to prevent unjust firing or unfair assignments, make it difficult to keep salaries low by constantly hiring inexperienced people and firing the more experienced members. As with unions, the intention, though good, can become corrupt over time. The problem in universities as well as in some government and business positions is that people in secure jobs may over the years become less productive or out of touch. People holding secure positions for decades are preventing younger people from achieving promotions, and may become authoritarian. Unions often have a situation like tenure, usually referred to as "First Hired, Last Fired." This is to protect the older workers in case of cutbacks or malicious firing. Abuse of both systems is fairly common, judging by my own observations and what I have read. This video is a great Twofer. Two interesting, one of them very useful, topics in one!
Dig the shirt, Dr. Grande. Also, as a college professor I agree: the tenure system is broken, and we haven't even talked about adjunct professors yet. XO.
My university has moved away from that system. Obviously the ones who are tenured were not stripped of their tenure, just grandfathered in, but they’ve quit using that system. The system we currently use is still ranking, but requires evaluations (the higher ranking faculty members’ are more spread out, not annual) and poor evaluations lead to an action plan or failure to renew contract. It allows for some seniority without the hard-to-touch aspect of tenure. Evaluations consider student evaluations, as well, which really ups the accountability for instruction.
I work as an adjunct when I have the opportunity. I have an MA, not a PhD, so I am only eligible to teach the lower level history classes, basically I teach Western Civ to non history majors who are only taking the class to check off "general ed" requirements. I am good at it, and I never want to stop learning more, I wish I had the opportunity to teach more often. I am comfortable in my own skin when I am in a lecture hall, and for the most part the students respond well to me. It is frustrating that there is little to no opportunity to access a full time position. As ridiculous as it may sound, I do believe that history is the foundation for all learning, second only to literacy. It is also frustrating that I am relegated to Western Civ when I am far more qualified to teach Russian\Eastern European History I pay my bills with an IT job that I grateful for in a monetary sense, but it has no intrinsic meaning. However,, I cannot get a PhD and work full time. I nearly came unhinged finishing my MA with a full time job. I know I would not survive working on a PhD while maintaining a job outside of academia. That said, I suspect your comment is related to the increased use of adjuncts to replace actual profs as FTEs. Even though I enjoy being an adjunct myself, I also see wide spread use of adjuncts as problematic. We do not have the one on one office hours available for students, and I know for some adjuncts, teaching is no different than waiting tables, it is just another part time job. There are no benefits, no security, and no chance of promotion. Universities are becoming more corporatized, and with that the principles of leaning and critical thinking are relegated to the back seat.
Thank you for analyzing the Amy Bishop case. Someone I love was one of her targets and I have difficulty making sense of the whole thing. She is obviously an unstable person and I certainly do wish the Massachusetts police had done more to protect the public they serve back when she shot her brother. Also, what up with that mother who protected Amy after shooting the brother? Definitely, something was going on there.
The mother was friends with the Braintree Chief of Police and convinced him not to file charges. Nowadays possible homicide investigations in Mass. are handled by the state police not the local cops to prevent someone getting with murder as she did here.
Sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what that would be like to lose someone close to me who was working in an environment where the very last thing you would expect to happen would be they were shot to death. In some ways, this case reminds me of the Jon Benet Ramsay case, where I'm convinced the little girl's brother accidentally killed her and the parents came up with the most ridiculous kidnapping alibi imaginable to protect the son.
I remember this case...and having been through graduate school, it added an extra level of interest for me. I remember professors working so hard for the invaluable “tenure.” I agree that system is totally broken. My biggest question with this case is how in the world did she just walk away with no charges from likely murdering her brother? Additionally, holding workers at the car dealership at gunpoint? How, how, how, did she just walk away from this with no charges and go off to college...it makes absolutely no sense, none at all. Thank you for covering this case, it has always fascinated me, a total tragedy that perhaps could have been averted after what she did to her brother. I also, as always, enjoy your analysis and your dry sense of humor.

I've been binging on your vids lately and your deadpan "asides" always catch me off guard and have almost made me spit coffee on my computer on more than one occasion. Great channel, Dr. G! Keep 'em coming!
In all seriousness, the tenure system (in North America, at the very least) is, indeed, brutal. My mother attended Tulane, where one of her favorite professors committed suicide after working there for years and being denied tenure by several colleagues who simply didn’t like him on a personal level. I can’t imagine working so hard at a relatively low-paying career in academics, becoming an expert in your field, and then essentially losing your job and retirement plan at the age of 55+, all because you didn’t get along well with some of your colleagues.

I wish you had said more about her personality. Perhaps you will revisit her case some day.
Bishop reminds me a lot of one of my sisters. It absolutely blows my mind she was not arrested as a teenager after killing her brother with a shotgun blast that literally tore him right in two. There are _multiple_ credible eyewitnesses to her actions immediately after the murder - she attempted to carjack a woman outside her house, then ran to a car dealership and attempted to carjack someone _else_ before police arrested her...still at the car dealership with the shotgun still in hand!! How corrupt was that police department that they were willing to call this an "accident"?!
She was holding the shotgun with two hands; one by the barrel and the other on the stock...yet the "gun just went off". Yeah, right. The gun aimed at her brother and shot him by itself.

The haircut comment has me giggling. I think it is because while in cosmetology school (training for hair stylist) a boyfriend (now ex ) came in for a cut and I made his hair into a pineapple 🍍
Factz
@@RetroCanuckJunkie I knew it looked familiar. You're right! That's who she resembles.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That shirt color has personality!
For sure, it has high Openness to experience, low Conscienciousness, high Extroversion, high Aimiabilty and low Neurotisism. What's the diagnosis? Lol
"I was not there." She was not all there.
Nope. Not her. She didn't do it. Didn't shoot her brother, either. That haircut is killing me!
Why was this lunatic roaming around freely ? Why is she not locked up in a psychiatric facility instead of a regular prison ?
Thank you for explaining what tenure means. I really had no idea how complicated it was. It’s funny how these professors have to go through so many hoops for their jobs and nothing is really guaranteed after all is said and done.
I never thought that something like a herpes bomb could even exist! The more you know I guess 😂. Thank you and have a nice day Dr.Grande!
I guess any viable virus or pathogen can be attached to an explosive device in a dirty bomb fashion.
A guy mailed an AIDS bomb to Bjork. That's a crazy story.
Research is impeccable as usual. But I admit your humour and delivery of such is what I look forward to. And you never disappoint.
I love your videos. I watch them in bed at night while relaxing. They're entertaining, educational and your humour is on point. Thank you xoxo
Great bomb joke! The delivery was awesome too. Love your channel! One of my all time favorites!
Yowsa! What a story! How about another infamous Amy's story? Amy Fisher (The Long Island Lolita) and Joey & Mary Jo Buttafuoco.
I've been binging on your vids lately and your deadpan "asides" always catch me off guard and have almost made me spit coffee on my computer on more than one occasion. Great channel, Dr. G! Keep 'em coming!
I also like and appreciate your content.
Right on time for my road trip. Thanks, Dr. Grande! Btw, do you have merch?
He does. There is a variety of designs on teespring. The link is in the description for this video.
@@rejaneoliveira5019 Thank you!
@@DuckiesDad08 - You are most welcome:)
Well, if she's "Dr Amy Bishop" as if that qualifies her as better than other people, then why the hell was she eating at a lowly IHOP restaurant?!
Yea everyone knows the upper echelon eat at waffle house.
Awww, Dr. Grande....I feel sorry for the poor Herpes Bomb... sitting on swing-set all alone at recess! Thanks again for another great video.
Can’t wait for the t shirt with the sad herpes bomb sitting on a swing to show up in the merch lol
@@danielwggudan2 Find it in the STD line out this spring. :)
Dr Grande's humor is like a daily vitamin. I need my daily dose! 💊🧪🌡️🏨🚑🍏
I think I first heard of this story on Snapped, one of my favorite shows. Edit: Red is a good color on you, Dr. Grande. 👍🏽
I've never heard of this before.
Thank you for the video.
Oh my my, you are SO DEFINATELY NOT a «tørrpinn» as I said that I thought you’d be the first time I watched one of your videos.
You get me EVERY time in stiches and this Norwegian girl is officially OVERLY IMPRESSED yet AGAIN.
Dr. Grande; you’re a riot❤️
Love from Norway
Ps: your ability to be SO profesjonell is beyond me. Just saying. Omg!!!💪
Love this video Dr Grande, I really like how you summarise and conclude your videos 🙂
I wanna know why no charges were filed against the person who gave her that atrocious haircut!! 🤷♀️
😂😂😂😂 I’m cackling
They gave her a villains hair cut cause they knew ...
@@cruelcimmcia859 Their barber-chair booster seat had been stolen. Again.
Maybe she cut it herself? 😱
I'm speculating, she gave herself the haircut with bowl #3
Your videos are incredibly enlightening. I often find myself searching your videos as a follow up to a true crime story. Please do a video on Paris Bennett. He murdered his four year old sister in cold blood. It’s a case that has always haunted me.
Oh, thank you doctor. I was one of those who wished for that.
Thank you Dr Grande, ever interesting😁😁😁😁😁😁❤💙💚💛💚💙❤💙💚💛💙❤💙💚💛💚💙❤
Those darn booster seats are nothing but trouble.
Soon people on probation and parole will not be allowed to have possession of a booster seat.
exactly 😊!
Love your zingers! Helps lighten the dark material you cover. Keep it up. Awesome.
Thanks Dr. Grande❤️😄❤️
We have brought a new line of behaviours into the DSM manual which has this set of behaviours associated within itself:
- Varieties of specimens to analyze, from the last century up to the present.
- Specimens analyzed range from Past Presidents, to Criminals of the common type, to purely detestable characters of all types and sizes.
- Possesses genuine dead-pan humour (not the Walmart variety)
- Unable or incapable of laughing at own jokes (or appears to be serious at all times)
- Has extensive knowledge of tenure, but willingly discounts it as being non-advantageous
- One who has superior knowledge of firearms, of all types and ranges of application
-# knows details of what constitutes a Herpes Bomb and can keep this well hidden
-Extensive knowledge of any type of Diner chair, especially at IHOP in and around Peabody
-Is a tenured professor
- Is reasonable and even-tempered
Anyone willing to guess who would fit this description should submit it to the evaluating committee for the next DSM-6 review committee ASAP. T
Thankyou, and have a good day. 😀❤️😀
Loving the dry, wry, tongue in cheek commentary. It’s so deserved.
Brilliant analysis on a fascinating story.
Dr G, considering the season... Please consider an analysis of The Grinch 🎄
Whenever I click on a Dr. Grande video, I hit the "like" button even before the video starts, because I know the content will always be pure epic gold.
As soon as I heard "herpes bomb" I knew that that foreshadowed a joke from you, Doc! Bravo!
I appreciate the reminder to not get attached to career identity. Thanks and I’ll pass that on- it’s important for everyone.
Dear Dr. Grande:
I watched the documentary "CRAZY, NOT INSANE" based partially on the life and work of Dr. Dorothy Lewis, and her court collisions with Dr. Park Dietz, 2 very different views of the motives and mental health of serial killers. Your analysis of this topic would be epic.
....... and don't forget the bomb!
The people at UAH were unaware of her years of problems prior to her employment there, but learned about bits and pieces of her past as time went on, largely because she was so peculiar and disagreeable that they nosed around a bit.
I wish you had said more about her personality. Perhaps you will revisit her case some day.
Congratulations Dr. Grande for your newly acquired position as the official spokesperson for Valium! Are you non-excited about it?
Bishop reminds me a lot of one of my sisters. Same age, highly educated, very entitled, very out of touch, really bad at teaching, not aware that she is a bad at teaching, extremely sensitive to social status, handles disappointments like not getting a job with screaming tantrums.... As far as I know she hasn't killed anyone but I wouldn't put it past her. Thank you Dr. Grande for the refresher on why I'm happy to have gone no contact with my messed up family.
Shout out Braintree MA! A lovely town.
Per usual, Dr. Grande does a terrific job with this video. Kudos! Keep them coming please. 👍
Herpes Bomb is, incidentally, my ex-wife's nickname.
That was one of my hs friend's nickname. Is your ex wife's name Cathy Norman? lol.
ouch!
Awesome analysis!!! Can't wait to click on all of your videos!!
Thank you for explaining what Tenyor is. I had a basic understanding of it but not to the detail you describe. My question is why wasn't she convicted of all 3 murders? That part is really puzzling to me. Thanks.
Hi, it's spelled "tenured".
I had a career in real estate 🏡 but then I got a gallstone and the surgery left me with permanent chronic pain and I can’t function like I used to. The message of not wrapping up your identity in your career is an important one. Unexpected things can and do happen in life.
Requests: Chris McCandless, Ryan Champion (plot to have parents and sister killed in KY then he killed the hired shooter and claimed self defense and he was only survivor)
Thanks for another great video. Wondering if you could make videos about most effective treatment protocols for various disorders?
Hi Dr Grande can you do a video on the mental health and personality of the mathematician John Nash
