    One important distinction about the agents. The people aren’t agents, the agents can take over any person in the matrix, like they replace their “code” with themselves. It’s not that anyone can be an agent, but anyone connected to the matrix can become an agent. Subtle difference, I know, but it does make a difference regarding free will or lack thereof within the matrix.

    • @MysterClark
      @MysterClark 2 года назад +50

      I was going to say the same thing. It's basically like anyone in one of those pods still attached to the Matrix is like a car in GTA. The agents will just rip you out of the car and take it for a ride themselves.

      It's actually those that are "deeply entrenched" in the matrix.
      So those that are questioning the reality they are in likely won't be as accessible by the agents.
      And in the movie world, it was touched on (Neo is "searching for the answer"), but people can wake up without any outside assistance.
      I think an animated short showed a track and field runner getting so in tune with their running that their mind realized their actual body wasn't the one running and they just woke up in their pod (or something to that effect).
      A really neat concept, especially for its time.

  • @Matacron
    @Matacron 2 года назад +800

    You made one small mistake that bears pointing out: the agents weren't disguising themselves as humans. They were uploading themselves INTO the humans because they were in proximity to their enemies.
    Remember that Neo, Morpheus, Trinity, etc. were NOT hardwired into the Matrix at that point, but all of the OTHER humans were. Remember what Morpheus said when he was training Neo? As long as they haven't been freed from the Matrix, they are all enemies. They are all enemies because an agent can enter their bodies at any time.

    • @Daniel-Strain
      @Daniel-Strain 2 года назад

      And, they are not only enemies because of that. They are enemies because they are fully convinced that the Matrix is real and they will obey the power structures in that world, acting against the Zion humans in their efforts. For example, a typical cop or security guard, or even a citizen who thinks they are reporting terrorists - will follow the orders of their superiors and reinforce the status quo. So the only way to free humanity is to sometimes harm the humans who stand in the way of that - even if they are innocent and do it out of ignorance.

    • @Yesquire0
      @Yesquire0 2 года назад +12

      The problem I have with your explanation is that I'd prefer to describe all the apparent humans who occupy the metaverse of The Matrix as avatars for a computer program. They are not people. They have no bodies. They are computer code. Very sophisticated computer code, probably best-described as discrete A.I units. The machines running The Matrix can manipulate the code that, as a whole, makes up the simulation that is The Matrix, and that includes swapping out Agent coding for that of any "person" (actually just discrete A.I. code) running within the overall software simulation that is The Matrix.

I always tried to get them to watch it a second time, but gave them a couple of things to consider while watching. Usually the people just didn't quite get the difference between reality and the computer program and once you impress that on them then there's like this huge light bulb over their head and they are eager to watch a second time

    Its not Trinity's kiss that brings Neo back to life.
    The oracle told Neo that "You got the gift, but it looks like your waiting for something, your next life perhaps."
    Neo was always suppose to die inside the matrix, and resurrect as "the one"
    Trinitys fate was to fall in love with the person that was the one, and when she can finally admit to Neo that she loves him and kisses him, her fate has come to fruition, its just a happy coincidence that it happens at the same time as he reawakens as the one :)

    • @kevinw.6177
      @kevinw.6177 2 года назад +34

      He also reawakens because although Neo's heart has stopped, his brain is still functioning and he can still hear her and feel her lips on his. This helps him realize that he is the One (helped by how strongly Trinity believes in him) and that he's not actually dead yet. So you can even leave prophecy out of it. Pretty much every reactor dismisses the scene as a stupid cliché and it always irritates me, because this is actually the one time where a kiss bringing someone back to life is plausible and internally consistent.

    Explanation for how Agents switch bodies…
    Agents are simply codes within the matrix. So all they do is move their code wherever they want within the Matrix.
    Simply put… an Agent can take over the body of anyone who has not been unplugged from the Matrix. So if an Agent dies, the person they took the body over from dies & the Agent takes over the body of someone else. So you have to destroy the code itself, not the body.

    Nobody thought about Deja Vu the same again. When we walked out of the theater after this film, we were checking the back of our heads for connections. Also a trip thing is how vivid the color of the world is after you come out of the theater. In the theater you're immersed in the colors of the film. The Matrix has this sickly green lighting, while the actual world is pale blue. So going back outside into full color is a visual shock.

      There is a MAJOR Mandella effect with the movies color saturation. The original thatrical release and initial home video release does not have the green tint for matrix scenes. You and MILLIONS of people have misremembered that. The sequels had the green tint. The initial vhs and dvd release of the matrix did not have a green tint. It is the only way to see the original Theatrical "Cut" The green tint was added to the HD versions to make it match the sequels when it was all released on blu ray. I have both original vhs and dvd copies (It was the first MUST own DVD back in the day) and have had to show many friends and relatives how they remember incorrectly. One thing I loved about this film was how well they did the Show Don't Tell for a lot of the subtle storytelling details. Like how they establish Trinity as this physics defying badass, who can calmly take out a room of cops, but the second she's told there is an agent involved, she is visibly terrified. Even to go so far as the superman dive through a window into another building, tumble roll down a set of stairs, and INSTANTLY pop up with 2 guns facing the way she came, fully expecting the agent to be hot on her heels. And she's SHAKING she's so scared. You don't need to show the Agents being insane to establish them as a threat, just show how the established badasses are scared by comparison. Also subtle hints that Neo is the One early on, like when he is being chewed out by his boss for being late, and he keeps getting distracted by the window cleaner and his squeaky cleaning method. It kept making Neo lose focus on his boss being an ass, so he didn't really feel bad about the "chewing out session". By the time it's over, he literally wasn't even paying attention when he realizes his boss is done bitching at him, and he goes back to his desk, relatively unaffected. To me, that felt an awful lot like an example of him unconsciously altering the Matrix, to help him out. He was probably in his head, mentally screaming "oh god, I want to be ANYWHERE than here, listening to this asshole drone on. Man what I would give for anything to alleviate this monotony..." *squuueeeeeaaak!* Oh look, something to distract you, what a crazy random happenstance!
    The fantastic method of teaching the rules of the Matrix via the sparring session with Morpheus. Illustrating how they can defy the conventions of physical limitations, by sheer thought. How we see this reinforced later when Morpheus is fighting Smith in the bathroom, and we see him literally "shake it off", after being thrown into the wall. he shakes his head, reminding himself "it's not real" and he comes back out fresh and ready to go. This movie is just SO well done on so many levels, both technical and narrative. It's a fantastic example of what young, creative talent, with enough resources, and an eager drive to get their vision out, can do. They can make a movie that ends up fundamentally altering the way action movies are made, from that day forward.

      I also REALLY love the sequence with Morpheus being interrogated, how he is almost broken, and then he overhears that one agent say "I think they are trying to save him." And you see a very subtle shift, in Morpheus' demeanor. He's still hurt, still mentally exhausted, but, that little sliver of hope returns to his eyes. And then when Neo clears out the agents, and starts whispering "come on Morpheus, get up, get up get up get up!" And the horns start to rise, in that emotional swell, while we see his eyes flutter and unroll from being pure white, as he snaps back into focus, the way you see him straining and screaming as he reclaims his strength and breaks his chains. I...fucking....LOVE that moment. Every time it gets me choked up. Even just writing this description of it has me teary eyed. IT'S JUST SO DAMN GOOD!

    Since The Matrix is a computer program and the Agents are software, the agents can "take over" any human plugged into The Matrix. It does not have to be any specific person. They can't take over the heroes because the heroes are entering The Matrix using a pirate satellite and are not connected to the system directly, but any other random person in the world is fair game.
    At the end of the movie, when Neo sees the code, that is the movie's illustration of why Neo can do anything. If everything in The Matrix is code, all he has to do in order to do whatever he want is rewrite the code. So, he can make bullets stop, he can heal his wounds, etc.
    The Wachowski sisters, who wrote and directed the movie, are both transgender, and they have stated that the description of The Matrix as a sense that something about the world is fundamentally off was drawn from their experience of gender dysphoria. The character of Switch was going to represent that literally, with the character appearing as male in one world and female in another, but it was vetoed by the studio.
    I said it on a previous video, but I really hope you finish The Matrix series. People have strong mixed feelings about the sequels, but I think the entire series is great, and constantly finds new ideas to explore about what defines our reality and what it means to be free, in the truest sense. I also think you would flip out for the Wachowskis' debut film, Bound, a really cool crime thriller that would be good for Pride month. Some extreme sexual content, but I don't get the impression that would bother you.

      Not only that it's a representation of their gender dysphoria, but the train fight scene, where Neo officially declares his name as Neo, after Agent Smith keeps deadnaming him during their fight, calling him Mr. Anderson over and over, is highly thought to be a direct reference to....(I forget which Wachowski it is, the first to declare her transgender status I believe), her attempt at suicide via subway. She has stated that at the height of her depression over her dysphoria, she went down to the subway and was going to jump in front of a train and kill herself, but that she came out of it, and I think, at that time, decided to transition? That's definitely what's implied with the scene, as that is literally the moment that Mr. Anderson dies, to the sound of an oncoming train, and Neo is born, via his own declaration of that as his identity. Fun fact: I was working as a movie theater manager around the time this was released, and when the first trailer for it dropped, no one could figure out what it was about. People would leave the auditorium (after watching the film the trailer was shown before) still talking about it, and most people thought it was going to be about vampires. Nope! And then of course once people actually got to see it, it was all they could talk about, and we had numerous repeaters - people who came back to watch it again and again. Also: the guy that seems so familiar, the agent? He also played The Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger. And the way they enter and exit the Matrix is through the phone lines - this movie was made in the time period where dial-up internet was still in majority (but receding) use; so they "dialed" their minds into The Matrix. And remember the Oracle said Neo was waiting for his next life to become The One? He had to "die" and come back to life to become The One, because The One can control the Matrix, which means that what would kill an ordinary human in The Matrix cannot kill him - but he had to believe in order to get there. And finally, if you continue in the Matrix universe - and I hope you will - boy, you are in for a ride! There's three more movies set in this universe, and each one is more of a mind trip that the previous ones. There's also the "Animatrix" which delves deep into the mythology - how the war between humans and AI started, the Matrix, etc.

However, some execs in the company said that was too complicated for people to understand and made them change it to people being used as batteries. Using people's brains makes much more sense as it explains how they are able to bend the laws of the matrix, as they are part of its structure. Not to mention the human brain is basically a super computer, and our bodies are not efficient batteries.

If they just took the food they were feeding us and burned it in a furnace they'd get ten times as much energy.
      Although I did like this proposed explanation from a fan:
      Morpheus: ...and that's why they machines use us as batteries.
      Neo: Wait, that doesn't make any sense. We require resources to stay alive. According to the laws of thermodynamics humans would be a net drain on resources, not a viable power source.

The white AWA Tower the helicopter flies over, the hemispherical road tunnels near Central Station. A few weeks later I re-read it, and I realised all I had done was follow the breadcrumbs that were as subtle as a brick, that if I had taken the red pill option when I started writing, I would have had a much better, more challenging dissertation to show for my efforts. I would probably have had a lower grade, but grades only matter when you're doing them, they are meaningless in real life.

      I feel like this movie is one of the few you really must see for the first time with a really large screen and surround sound. Either a movie theater or great home theater, that’s the way this is meant to be seen. It takes the movie from wow that was good, to that was f-ing incredible!

    Any person in the Matrix can be an agent. Morpheus explains this during Neo's training. It's not that the hobo is an agent. The agents are monitoring people trying to locate Neo and Trinity. When the hobo sees something, the agent takes over his program.
    If you were playing an MMO video game (like World of Warcraft), an administrator with enough clearance could literally take over your avatar and move you around. That's basically what's happening here.
    I do wonder if that kills the person. I assume it does.

      Not necessarily, but if the agent "dies", you do. Else you just end up in a different place without any knowledge of what happened in between.
      Ever zoned out while traveling, and suddenly realizing you did and cannot really remember what happened in between? ;-)

    So this was shot almost entirely on the Gold Coast and Sydney, in Australia. Many of the extras, as well as the main character Mouse (Matt Doran), were snatched from the hit soap opera Home and Away, which most Americans will have no concept of, but Aussies and Brits will know very well.

    I still find it funny how at (and around, and after) the time of the Matrix's release every-one got Laurence Fishburne and Samuel L Jackson mixed up so poor Samuel was showered with questions about the Matrix when and (long) after the film came out. As a great joke, in the film "Team America: World Police" most of the lines spoken by the character of Samuel Jackson were actually lines spoken by Laurence Fishburne in The Matrix (and yes, Jackson features in the Matrix joke of Team America)... To be fair, Samuel Jackson took the misunderstandings and jokes pretty well.

    Fun fact- Keanu loved this script so much that he gave up part of his salary so special effects could be done to the best they could. He also bought motorcycles for his crew. He is known for doing things like this. He is called the nicest man in Hollywood. He has often given up part of his salary for movies in order to hire well known great actors to co star with.

    Freedom and risk vs "comfort" and confinement is definitely a question the film brings up. The Wachowskis (who are now both out as trans) have talked about the Matrix as an allegory for the trans experience, which is also really interesting. I think the film can be enjoyed just on its own, but if you're interested, looking up some deeper analyses and interviews by the creators can be fun too. Glad you enjoyed it!

    In the old days, the 90s, dial up was used to connect to the Internet. So phones were very important if you want to get online.

  • @theradgegadgie6352
    @theradgegadgie6352 2 года назад +4

    19:31 Back in the late nineties the internet was accessed via the phone lines. There were no wireless routers or broadband. We had shitty 56kb per second dial-up connections. Morpheus's crew are hacking into the Matrix via the phone system and that is also how they leave it. To exit the operator on the ship (Tank) places a call from their pirate network into a telephone line in the Matrix. If someone who is unplugged and whose physical body is on the ship answers said phone, their Matrix body (known as their RSI, or residual self image) discorporates and is fed through the phone lines back into their physical body on board the ship. This is how Trinity escaped in the opening scene of the movie and why she was so desperate to answer the phone before the truck hit the booth.
    Agents are incredibly sophisticated Matrix AI programmes that work to protect the system from those who would destabilise it. Because they are designed by the same programme who designed the Matrix they can have physical capabilities which stretch the physics limits within the Matrix to breaking point: super speed, super strength, the ability to shoot the fleas of a hog's back at five hundred yards, etc. If the system detects something unusual that needs urgent attention, the nearest plugged-in human being to the incident who is attached to the Matrix will be "posessed" by an Agent, who uses that person's RSI to manifest inside the Matrix. So the tramp in the subway (who is an unaware human being whose real body is sleeping in a pink goo pod in the Machines'power plant) sees people disappearing into a pay phone's earpiece and it blows his mind. Because he's attached to the Matrix the Machines also see this and Smith jumps in, taking over the Tramp's body to try and kill Neo and Trinity. When Neo threw Smith under that train the tramp was killed and Smith was forced to leave his now dead body and find some other person to try and enter to stop Neo escaping. EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING still attached to the Matrix (millions of them) are potentially a host for an agent.
    Agents are metaphors for angels, believe it or not. The Machines genuinely want the humans in the Matrix to live long and happy lives and Agents respond to anything which threatens its stability. Also, when Angels in the Bible or Rabbinic stories aren't delivering news that happens to be good, they are fucking terrifying! So why are they fighting Neo, who is an obvious Jesus metaphor? All will be revealed....
    By the way, I guarantee you will not understand wtf just happened when the climax of the third film arrives. No-one does. Even people who've seen it many times don't get what happened. I will post another long-ass explanation there. 😀

    Good. She's full of questions.
    A properly written story _raises_ lots of questions toward the beginning to _intrigue_ the audience, but makes it a point to keep _track_ of them all and _answer_ them by the time the story ends or else the audience will feel _cheated._

    There's nothing that can be said about this movie that hasn't been said a thousand times.
    This movie was an absolute game changer. It managed to cram so much philosophy and ideas of existential dread while also just being a fun movie its insane.
    One thing you got slightly wrong, Morpheus doesn't pick the "chosen ones" young , he picks people to be unplugged from the Matrix in general, while young.
    This is because their minds are still open to change and they have an easier time accepting that the world they used to live in isn't real
    And , yeah, there's a reason why Smith is considered one of the best movie villains of all time.
    His talk with Morpheus reveals that, whereas the other agents are emotionless and see humanity as a lesser evil for their survival, Smith HATES humanity with a burning passion

      @@stvbrsn there is another theory that this movie is based off of but I can’t remember the name of it (it’s been a little over 10 years since I took that class) but essentially it revolved around perceived reality and whether everyone experiences the same one you do when you are not within close proximity of one another. Essentially the “if the tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it does it make a sound” question.

      I always love this question, because from a certain point of view it’s extremely to answer! It’s all about the very precise definitions of words.
      Sound is a relationship between vibrating air molecules and a sensory apparatus (ear) connected to a nervous system.
      So… no. The tree does not make a sound. Sure, the air molecules are vibrating, but with no one there to hear it… it does not make a sound.
