    not accurate. borobodur is almost 4 centuries bc, and it has buddha statues all over.

      @@anandm4748 Buddha statues did not exist in 4th Century BC, Borobudur most likely built around 8th Century CE.

      @@dawnfm00 They actually did - this fact OUTRAGES many people, but it is true. Buddha statues predate not only the Mauryans, but also the Indo-Greeks are are found all over Nepal, as well as ruins in Bodhgaya and Bihar generally.
      There were, however, intermittent periods of Hindu rule where Buddha statues, temples and the religion itself faced INTENSE suppression from the ruling classes. This caused Buddhism to flee to Nepal, China, and the Far East.
      Buddha statues (and entire temples/monasteries) were in many cases RAZED to the ground and monks massacred. Of course, the Muslims made it worse still.
      India was just a deeply UNSAFE environment for Buddhism, so it fled to East Asia.
